The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)

Thanks for the help. Took it to a local walmart to try and return it just to see if that would work. They told me to call the 1800 number . They said it would take 2-3 days to get a box and ship the xbox in the box takes about 2-3 weeks to get it back.

yeah my mom had that. it SUCKED! i could connect to live and download (pacman took about 4 hrs to dl LOL) thats about it. i tried playing gauntlet online and it was lag city. sorry thats all you have....its bad i know.

This just happened to me as well. This was my third 360. First one was a launch model, and it RROD'd by December 2005. The second one RROD's right before the Halo 3 launch. Needless to say, I'm now out of warranty. The first few times it happened, I was able to get it to read a disc by ejecting / closing the tray a few times. Last night I tried for 30 minutes with no luck. I called Microsoft, and got a quote of $99 for the repair. Having nothing to loose, I opened it up, removed the drive, and saw that the problem was that the disc would not "spin up." I used a damp cloth to clean the (?) spindle (?) and it seems to be resolved. If this crops up again, I'll probably just pick up a DVD drive on eBay and replace it myself.

To limp it along, try a DVD. If the DVD reads, then try a game. But, from someone who's about to send in console #5, you are on borrowed time.

It wouldn't read anything, Game, DVD, CD. I'm just glad I was able to get into the case so that I can replace the drive ($40) myself as opposed to having Microsoft do it ($99. + tax)

I recently bought a new HDTV and I am in need of an HDMI upscaling dvd player. I was thinking of just spending an extra 70 bucks or so and getting an arcade unit. Seems like a good deal if I already need the DVD player, but I wanted to ask how is the 360 as dvd player? If it sucks that sort of kills the whole idea.

Thanks!

I'm trying to clear some space on my HDD, but I'm not sure how this works with DLC. Can I re-download ANYTHING for free, as long as it's in my download history? What if something was free when I initially downloaded it, but has since gone up in price?

For example, I never bought Lumines, but I got some DLC for it that was free during a brief launch window, in case I ever got around to buying the full game. If I deleted that DLC, got the game at a later date, and wanted to get that extra content again - would I be forced to pay for it this time, or could I just re-download it free of charge?

This happened to me one month outside the regular warranty. :( Anyone know how to nudge the 360 along the process of RRODing? D:

I'm sorry this is already asked as I remember someone asked this but at the time I didn't care since it didn't concern me. However now, since I got a new system from the repair center, my profile does not log in automatically. I didn't change anything and I can't find anywhere on NXE where to set auto sign in. I'm just not used to having to select my profile and signing into live all the time.

It's pretty good for upscaling from my little experience with using is strictly as a DVD player, but you should know that the Arcade only comes with Composite cables; it has an HDMI port, but official HDMI cables are like $40 alone.

They're $40 if you're a sucker. Go to monoprice and pay like $5.

Today I ran into some Xbox Wireless Adapters and 60gb hd starter. currently each one is priced at 69.99. unfortunately the 60gb does not come with a transfer kit, either one of these worth grabbing at that price.

Okay...so here's the problem.

I own a 21.6 inch LCD monitor and a 20 inch SDTV. I borrowed a Microsoft manufact. VGA cable from a friend and plugged it in all that jazz blah blah. The problem is the image quality. On every game I played(lets say about 10+ not including demos), the image quality was low, textures seemed stretched across the characters and environments, and the games did not have any anti aliasing. I tried every resolution that the dashboard allowed, and I didn't have any luck getting better picture.

So, I hook up my 360 to my SDTV with a S-video cable, you know standard yellow/white/red connector with composite connectors on the other end. The image quality is SUPERB and drastically improved. High quality textures, no aliased edges, everything was crisp. Why does my monitor not output picture like this? I actually went up to Fry's once and bought a HDMI to DVI cable which changed absolutely nothing.

Thanks.

I was in the same exact position as you Dajinn.

When I upgraded from a 32" SDTV via S-Video connection to a

22" Samsung LCD via Microsoft VGA Cable.

There are a few things you need to get use to to and accept.

#1. SDTV resolution is 640x480i max or less it only looks better to you because thats what you are use to and SDTV has automatic built in Antiailising, plus SD Tube TV's have Billions of native colors. Vs. LCD monitors which only have 16.7 Million colors but much Higher resolution.

#2. Not all 360 game have 2x or 4x Anti ailising the Jaggies are normal in about a month you won;t even notice them anymore.

Its a difference of playing games in 4:3 aspect ration on SDTV 640x480

vs playing at 1680x1050 16:9 aspect ratio thankfully the new Xbox NXE guide supports LCD monitors at 16:9 or 16:10 aspect ratios

I myself had such simi;ar doubts about icture quality after switching from S-video to VGA or HDMI I had to go to my friends house and compare his 360 hook up to a 42" HDTV via HDMI to finally see that theres nothing wrong with my VGA connection.

Trust everyone that gaming in HD high def is better you are getting more resolution more pixels and a wider picture so you see more.
I just got a system update when I turned on my 360. Anyone know what they updated?
I knew someone would ask lol. Curious as well.

I just ordered the Pro Bundle w/ End War off Dell for 260... I am going to download a ton of demos once I get my console.

I made the mistake of purchasing an Arcade for 189 so I hope I can find someone to buy it locally.

Any tips for updating/setting up the console for the first time?

I don't have an HDTV yet, but I might later on this year.

I thought everyone knew to check MajorNelson.com whenever they had a question regarding XBL..

Dashboard Update (aka the HDMI Audio fix)

Starting Tuesday morning at 0200 Pacific when you sign into Xbox Live you’ll be prompted for a mandatory dashboard update. The update addresses the issue that a few folks were having with audio and their HDMI connection.

This update will be rolled out to all Xbox LIVE members around the world over the space of a few hours, so you may not get prompted for the update immediately. Thanks for your patience.

Well I got a new dog a few months back and he chewed up my headset yesterday. I had just the generic 360 one, nothing special.

Any suggestions on getting another one? I don't want to spend $100 on a headset, because I don't play that much. However I would like to hear some suggestions.

depends all on what you want. You can pick up a generic headset for a few bucks, a wireless official MS one for $60 or less or go with something higher end
Is Xbox.com not working for anyone else?

...is what I have been getting for the past couple of days.
works like a champ for me. I am using IE8 beta if that matters
I just bought a 60g HDD as an upgrade to my 20g.

I think the headsets from original xbox will work, just no volume control so it may not be feasible. I've been meaning to try it out, I like the behind the head style of the original headsets.

it should work. i use a regular phone headset at times and it works fine. it just get a little loud sometimes and the lack of volume control gets to me.

Ugh, stupid ass 360. When are they going to add; Psi Ops, Enter the Matrix and Oddworld Stranger's Wrath to the BC list? I really want to try Psi Ops and Strangers.

Are there Xbox 360 games that require the harddrive?

I am thinking of finally picking up an Xbox 360 Arcade when Raiden Fighters Aces is released next month. I have also been considering picking up Supreme Commander when it gets cheaper since my computer would never be able to handle it. Thanks ahead.

If you are interested CML, I will sell you a sealed Arcade for 185 + shipping (no profit for me).

Some do, most don't. But lots run better with it, and for me personally, I wouldn't really play my 360 anymore if not for the install to drive feature that helps make it quieter.
Hey!

Leave Niobe alone!!!
Yeah, it's not her fault that game was broken out of the box! Path of Neo was better, IMO.

Which version did you play? I always hear that it was broken, but I played the Gamecube one, and really liked it. I played Niobe's path first though, and thought 'other guy's' (Ghost's?) path was frustrating and not 1/4 as good when I tried it (gave up).

I liked it a lot more than Path of Neo, both for gameplay, graphics, and story. (And I mean geez, it has more of 'the Kisser' :D Monica Bellucci is frighteningly, horrifically, obscenely hot) Like what they did with that game, versus the obvious 'have you play as Neo and just regurgitate what happened in the films. Though I did enjoy and finish Path of Neo too!
