The General 360 Owners/Buyers FAQ Thread (Updated 1/15/10)

I have been using a VGA cable with my viewsonic 22" VX2260wm for about a month now and I am very happy with it. The VGA cable I use is by Monster Cable (no I didn't fall for he name brand, It was the cheapest one on ebay at the time that had 1080p) I would sugest that if your monitor has 1080p make sure the wire you get is 1080p. I noticed a lot of the off brand wires(not all) do not give you full HD.

What drive do you have? Any optical drive *SHOULD* spin the disc down *BEFORE* ejecting it, but I think Microsoft throws in any random drive they can buy at a garage sale ;)

I've said time and again that if my 360 ever scratches a disc, I'm done with the platform (because what's the point in keeping games that could be wrecked when I try to play them at some later point?) But so far so good on that.

Regarding the jumping around, IMO a moot point as you can and should install games to the hard drive anyway before playing. In many cases it at least slightly improves load time, but more importantly it makes the system fairly reasonable sounding, instead of sounding like a jet preparing for takeoff.

(And what's the deal with my Xbox profile never showing up in my sig now?)

I have 150 games, which ones should I install :)

Not to sound like an ass, but...the one you're currently playing. (Dang it, Xbox thingee STILL isn't showing up...)

Dude, you did SLA. My 20 gig hd has about 6 gigs left on it (after patches, downloaded content etc), 3 people use my xbox regularly, each playing on average 3/4 games each in regular rotation. Each game takes 3-6 gig's + patches + DLC.

Storing games on the HD is a fantasy. Even the 120 gig hd only allows for 10-15 games if you're lucky.

That just doesn't work for me, MS really need to fix the disc issue. IMHO it sucks.

Hmm, well I guess with that many people sharing a 20GB drive that's not going to work well. It's fine for me though when it's just me. I don't have any reason to keep more than one or two games on the drive.

One weird thing-there's a bunch of space on the hard drive tied up to be used for cache, only that's now pointless because games support being installed to the drive...so maybe Microsoft could reclaim that space? It would require maybe that they tell older games that they can't cache to the drive...if that wouldn't work right it could break compatibility, but otherwise it should work.

I know you can get a wire through microsoft, but is there any other way? And is the wire cheap from Microsoft?
I found your answer here.
I've looked and forgot to mention in the post if it cost anything and if you can only get it through microsoft. Apologies.

Does anyone know what adapter you need to get the Turtle Beach PX1's to work with 360? I know they are compatible, but can't find a link to the adapter.

ok i put the game in i get to my dude walk out side to my car then a error comes up saying can't read disc. i thought him maybe a glitch try about 4 times and the same shit. i cleaned the disc and restarted the system too and still and it's only that game cause i've tried others.
not what happened the disc is clean as anything idk what happened!!!!
and if can't be fixed anywhere to replace it or w/e? can gamestop do anything?

Call Rockstar and thank them for making a faulty disk, cause now you don't have to play this shitty game. Seriously, it isn't fun. Overrated.

Honestly, just call Microsoft and complain.
and what will that do, won't fix the problem on my xbox....
It'll diagnose whether the problem is your 360 or the disc. If it's your 360, you're probably screwed. If it's the disc, you may be able to return it.

Maybe there is a scratch on the disc that effects the character from being readable or not. One of my games had a disc error at a certain cutscene, and I brought it back to GC to get it buffed, and no problems since then.

Ok. I wanted to get a headset for the 360 so I went to Toys R Us Philippines. I find an Xbox 360 headseat. The headset's manufacturer is Joytech and they named the device SeCOMMUNICATOR headset.

The wear is a bit flimsy. And I cannot hear myself when I do a recording unless I talk loud. And a record sounds scratchy. And I can hear everything, including the fan and a static noise. And the mic is always on.

Costs abt $13.30

The product is distributed by New Era Entertainment PTE LTD. You can checkout the website at http://neweraonline.com
Due to recent developments in the world of the Xbox 360, I seriously need to update this thread to match the times.

What do you feel should be included with the next update of this thread? What new things should be added? What old things should be deleted? What needs work?

Obviously, things such as newer systems, the "popular games" section, the Arcade games list, etc. will all be updated, but I'm looking for more.
Is this ever going to happen???

Is there a way to unpair a music controller without having to shut off the system? When I play GH or RB, I have to have the instruments sign in as 1st player, but when I'm done and I wanna switch to a controller, it won't let me be the 1st player since the instrument has been paired to it, even after having shut it off.
Press the large x until a shutdown menu is displayed and select shutdown controller.
This always works for me. Just hold the guide button down until the menu pops up and turn off the controller that way.

Can anyone give me some advice here? I purchased a 120GB Upgrade kit today from Sears. About 3% into the upgrade transfer process, the 120GB drive disconnected, then sounds like it's spinning up and down over and over. The drive will not recognize itself on the 360 anymore.

I'm used to playing my games at 720p (max resolution for my 32" screen) with the official component cables. I turn on my 360 today, and I'm in 420p. I haven't been messing with the cables or anything (and I did check them just to be on the safe side). I check the settings and for available display options, it lists 420p, 720p, 1080p and 1080i. I can't remember ever being presented with those last two options before, but whatever.

Anyway I select 720p and the display is now too big for the screen. I don't have any idea what might have cause this, and I haven't yet tried another TV on it (which is the next course of action) but has anyone has heard of this before?

Did u try reformatting the drive manually?

http://www.ixtreme.net/hardware-downloads/upgrade-your-xbox-360-t278.html

Attach ur HD to ur comp and do a reformat. Then setup using the USB. Shd be fine afterwards.

Maybe the power went out. Usually it resets if power goes out/unplugged for long period of time. Also, you may need to change the TV's display settings to widescreen if the 720 seems too big.

Ok, I need some help understanding how netflix works on the 360. A few questions that have me comfused.

1. How many instant movies can you watch? is it based on your monthly plan? or is it unlimited for any member?

2. For netflix parties, does everyone need to be a netflix member? Or can netflix subscribers start a party and let others watch the movie with them?

Actually, I just realized yesterday that mine must have been reset a while back to 420. I've been playing battlefield 1943 with bars on the top and bottom of my screen.
So yesterday, I'm checking some settings. Just for the hell of it, and I notice I'm at 420. I switched it over to 1080i. Wow. I forgot how good this thing can look. I'm guessing I've been at 420 for about a month.

Hey guys,

Sorry for posting this as it is a pretty stupid question. However, I'm heading out the door in a couple minutes to buy some games and wanted to check before I left but didn't really know where to look and also tried searching but didn't come up with anything. So sorry for the stupid question.

Anyhow, I found some cheap Xbox games yesterday that were still sealed and new and I wasn't sure how they work since I've never played one and just wanted to confirm. I have 2 questions:

1. Do you have to have a memory card to save the game data on Xbox titles? (I figure you would, but wasn't sure if it could save to the hard drive.)

2. Can they be loaded to the hard drive like 360 games? (I prefer to download all my games to keep the system running cooler, but figure Xbox games can't do this, but thought I should check.)

Thanks so much!
1. That'd be a little redundant.. they save to the hard drive.

2. No.

Be sure to check the list here and see if they're compatible.
Thanks. I wasn't sure how they saved, with the Wii you have to save Gamecube games to an old memory card and I was thinking the Xbox may be the same way. I will probably just skip them, there are plenty of games I can get for 360, so its not like I don't have options, I was just liking the idea of getting a couple games for like $2.50, but I don't really want to run them if they can't be saved on the hard drive, I have a RROD phobia!.

Thanks for the quick reply!

Hello people was wondering if you can load photos onto the 360 using my Sd Card, card reader and obivously a USB cable connected to it.. Also if so can you use those for backgrounds instead of buying themes ?

Thanks

I did save some stuff from the net to my SD card and for some reason it wont show up on the card on the 360 or in my camera but if I connect to the PC it shows up there are pictures on the card....

Thanks

I just got a new HDTV and noticed something weird. Sometimes when a game or netflix are on loading screens the screen seems to get stretched out and after a couple moments it will pop back into the right proportions. Is there something wrong with my 360 or TV?

Happens to me too.
I have the official 120GB HDD that is giving me problems, not some western digital drive I'm trying to hack.
I'm sorry, u must not understand. U must be thinking of something else. Let me give u an explanation, so u understand.

U use the tools to reformat ur HD. U're not hacking anything.

Or wld u rather have a hard drive that only ur PC can detect?

Reformatting the hd will invalidate the drive for use with the xbox. The hd has a special area that contains DRM related data that is lost when you format, BUT I heard recently that a tool does exist to repair the hd after a format has been performed (I have no actual evidence of this, but if it's true I'm sure it's on xbox.com somewhere)

I've sent my hd back to ms in the past as it is covered by the 1yr warranty.

Are you using the beta NXE, they added hdtv discovery in the most recent release, which I would imagine tests your tv's capabilities.

What exactly did they change? Because with HDMI the TV already tells the system what it can do, so unless it's some wizard you go through to pick the best settings or something...

The party thing hasn't been implemented yet. I'd imagine all people involved would need a membership, though.

You canw atch an unlimited number of movies per month, but can only have 500 in your queue at one time. Mine's maxed out, LOL.
