The Great Muta's wrestling topic

 Sorry thought today was Sunday.

According to JR:

The Ring of Honor will have a hard time replicating Mid South Wrestling for many reasons. The fact that Mid South ran a weekly territory with highly placed TV clearances on many network affiliates and the skill level of the talent roster will keep the two promotions separate. Nonetheless, I am one who hope ROH continues to do well and continues to develop solid wrestlers.

The Cena DVD match listing is out - http://www.411mania.com/wrestling/news/60612/Matches-For-Upcoming-John-Cena-DVD.htm

The Jericho, JBL, and TLC match inclusions are nice, but the omission of the HBK matches, the Umaga matches, his match with Lashley at the Great American Bash, the Backlash main event, and his parking lot brawl with Eddie greatly hurts value of the set. It'll still sell very well, but it's not up to par with other WWE compilation DVDs. Here's another listing of what's on it, with a complete extras listing - http://www.gerweck.net/news/1191020131.shtml

Driven is a top-to-bottom great card, but felt slightly inferior to the first PPV. The main event on this show, however, is better than anything on the first PPV. Incredible main event, and it's one that makes me wish ROH had a national DVD deal again. I'd be surprised if they don't ink some kind of deal with Big Vision, who released some ROH stuff on their Heroes of World Class set, although some shows would have to be edited to nix TNA-contracted talent matches, like the Hardcore Homecoming November Reign set.

Speaking of RVD, he did tell the Between the Ropes radio show that he left WWE on good terms. RVD said a full-time WWE schedule "doesn't have any appeal to me right now." Regarding coming back, he said TNA would be worth looking into because of the schedule, and would weigh the schedule against the prestige, exposure and the money. Sabu is expected back in TNA soon.

It sucks they left out the Vengeance 2003 match with the Undertaker too.

How did you feel it was inferior to the first one? I saw the first one live and ordered the PPV and it didn't leave me impressed. Driven was a much more exciting affair. Perhaps the lack of NYC as the location of the PPV held the show back from getting over as much as it could have with you? That was about the only complaint I could have drawn up about the show, but that's because NYC + ROH = Sex and cigarettes.

The lack of the NYC crowd might be the main reason I didn't like it as much, as that crowd was fucking RABID throughout the show, while the crowd for this show was definitely excited, but couldn't match that crowd, and the matches felt slightly less exciting as a result. It's still the best wrestling PPV since the first ROH one, and one that I'll watch again, I just think it fell slightly short of topping the first show in every way.

Smackdown was a little lame, I just found myself chuckling throughout all of it. Rey's 619 on JBL twas awesome but Finley just killed it. Whenever he comes on, it should just go completely quiet with the exception of one person saying "You suck". That shelele bit is getting real old.

The Kane and MVP match was a bit lame I thought. And looking at Kane's moveset, it looked like it was only made up of 3 moves. The DQ was just a horrible way to end the match. Are the writers having that much trouble creating something interesting?

And the Undertaker and Mark Henry match was meh.

On another note, TNA is getting pretty interesting for me. I especially liked Judas Mesias' character, but seeing as someone said he got injured, looks like we'll be seeing less of him. And am I the only one who thinks Pacman Jones has almost no mic skills? Unfortunately I missed any footage of him wrestling so I can't judge him based on that yet. (Though the closest I saw was the moment when he interfered and sprayed AJ Styles in the face with god knows what). They should seriously just can him.

I felt actually that the quality of this PPV was actually higher than "Respect is Earned". The crowd wasn't "RABID" as you say, but they did keep the wrestlers going, starting claps, and cheers at the right moments, and since they weren't out of their seats the entire time, it made those spots when the crowd did go nuts stand out more (ie. Briscoes vs Steen & Generico). Solid PPV, definately worth $10 and it was cool to see McGuinness vs Danielson.

I personally thought the wrestling and pacing of the Driven PPV was better than Respect is Earned. The first PPV felt more like a giant exhibition of ROH that short of establishing Morishima, Nigel, and Dragon as the top three in the company didn't include anything meaningful.

Driven had more matches that made sense and pushed storylines: Resilience vs. No Remorse Corps., The Return of Austin Aries, The Losing Streak of BJ Whitmer, Dragon vs. Nigel, The Domination of Morishima, Briscoes vs. Steenerico.

Sure it didn't have the big show feel that NYC gives to a lot of their shows (which was also present at Fifth Year Festival: NYC), and it's primarily this reason that I said Morishima/Dragon is a better match than Nigel/McGuiness, but for pure wrestling and action, I thought Driven blew every single other PPV of the year away.

PWG's going to Europe for a weekend at the end of October. The first night features Bryan Danielson against Nigel McGuinness for the PWG Title, and the second features Kevin Steen and El Generico teaming against Davey Richards and Super Dragon, and Austin Aries against Nigel.

TNA's not smart enough to bring in RVD and Sabu. They'll probably sign Rene Dupree and Sylvain Grenier instead.
Myke, was the OVW show that aired yesterday a reairing of last week's show or was I seeing things(was falling asleep when I started watching)?
Yep. Goddamned college football keeps fucking up my OVW. This gives me some time to figure out how to cap from the new cable box. It has a firewire port in the back, so I thought it would be a straight plug from box to mac. Evidently, that's not the case. Must do more research.

EDIT: That Cena DVD match listing HAS to be incomplete. It's a 3 disc set, right? If so, expect to see roughly twice the number of matches on there.

I found The Ladder Match compilation for 15 bucks used yesterday and I'm watching it now. I'm happy to report that the blurring of the old WWF logo is pretty subtle and doesn't distract you too much, if at all, from the action.
The Rock v Triple H for the IC title.
I'm watching that one now, and it was the only one I've seen so far where the blurring was obvious (but still not all that bad). The turnuckles you'd only notice if yo were looking directly at them.

about that diva contest...

i bet brooke's a shoe-in
I want to have sexual intercourse with all of the Divas.
you can keep all the older, less attractive ones (for instance all the divas not named brooke in the diva search '07) haha

a knockout like christy hemme wouldn't be bad either..

Was last week's OVW posted? Didn't notice a link for it, thanks

No. College football went long, so they joined OVW in progress, and only 20 minutes or so made it to air. Stranger yet, the late night airing did not air at all, so I never did get a whole episode of it.

Sorry. I'll try to have next week's available as soon as I figure out how to cap from the new cable box.

i cant seem to find any ovw on any of my local channels which is boggling considering i live in lexington. and id actually be home to watch ovw.

side question, where can i find any old roh shows?

Another ROH Driven review...

http://wrestling.insidepulse.com/ar...30/ring-of-honor-ppv-report-driven-92007.html

Another excellent PPV from ROH. Like the last PPV, this showcased what ROH is all about and highlighted every style wrestled in ROH well. Also like the last PPV, every style of wrestling was showcased here; fast paced wrestling, high flying, hard hitting, brawling and technical.

Every match was good to great. The first 2 matches were both very good, BJ/Fuji was good, the 2 squash matches served their purpose, the tag title match was excellent and the main event (Nigel vs Dragon) was the best wrestling match all year. This was an excellent PPV regarding match quality.

There a few minor production improvements since the last PPV. I found the picture to be crisper, the camera angles were spot on and the commentators did a good job explaining everything they needed to. It was a nice touch showing some replays after the matches, but ROH needs some sort of on screen graphic to come on screen before and after them, to make it clear when the replay starts and ends.

The promos and character development was consistent here. BJ’s losing streak and Adam Pearce’s interest in him continued, Morishima continued to look dominant, Faction warfare looks strong (NRC vs Resilience), SnS Inc. continues to grow, the Briscoes look like the team to beat and Bryan Danielson look stronger than ever.

All in all, this PPV was better than Respect Is Earned. As one may know, I am a hardcore ROH fan, and I’m going on a limb to say this was the best thing ROH has done all year. Danielson vs Nigel is one of the best matches I’ve ever seen (and easily the best from this year), if you’re not interested in anything else on here at least buy the PPV just to see that match.

This PPV is must buy. Rating 10

Sunday WO site news update - http://www.wrestlingobserver.com/wo/news/headlines/default.asp?aID=20867

The Game Plan is the #1 movie in the country, and is felt by critics to be a waste of Johnson's talents. Dave Meltzer is giving up hosting Observer Live due to a new gig with foxsports.com, and Cyber Sunday has a double main event set up with Orton vs. Cena where the fans pick the gimmick match and Batista vs. Khali vs. Mark Henry vs. Undertaker where the fans pick the guest ref. WWE is planning to expand ECW's roster with developmental talent soon, and Morrison and Masters are back on the road.
..........................................................

I'm glad the Rock's movie's doing well, and maybe its success will lead to him finally getting more roles that are up to par with his talent. I'm also glad that ECW's going to get an influx of new talent, which should freshen up the slightly stale roster. The four way at Cyber Sunday sounds just awful. 'Taker's going to have to try and carry Khali, Henry (and Batista to a lesser extent) to a quality match, and I don't see that happening whatsoever. Meltzer giving up WOL isn't surprising, since Bryan announced it on his site yesterday, but it could be a good thing, as Bryan will have to improve tremendously to try and fill Dave's role on the show.

It's been in the works for the last couple of months to start bringing more developmental guys to ECW, I guess it took the drop in ratings to finally make it happen. I'd like to see Kenny Doane moved to ECW as well, he's way too talented to just be a job guy on SD.

I can't stand listening to Chico Alverez's voice and horrible jokes, so I guess I'm done with WOL for a long time.
The real question is, which one of those hosses will they try to sell as quick and aqile?
God I hope it's Khali.

Edit - Fabulous FPR news - Amazon has bumped the game's release date up one more week. It's now set for an 11/6 release. YAY! Hopefully the CAW mode allows me to properly recreate this Boyd Pierce outfit. -

Batista, Khali, Henry, and 'Taker all in the same match? Here's to hoping Henry or Khali botches something bad enough to result in their extended leave of absence. It's been a few weeks, we're about due for a Mark Henry injury.

Upon further inspection, the choices are Roddy Piper, Mick Foley, or Stone Cold. Time to sell some Condemned DVD's, eh?

I've got a special tribute-ish topic that I'm going to put up tomorrow. I'll probably be at work when this one hits 500, but fret not I'll put the topic up when I get home around 5. This guy had a chance to be one of the biggest superstars ever, but injuries and tragedy prevented that from happening...

So, until then, I'll leave you with this bit of comedy:

People around the world know Dave Batista as World Wrestling Entertainment's "the Animal," the rope-shaking, spine-busting World Heavyweight Champion, one of the most popular Superstars in recent years. The crowd turned Batista from heel to babyface after they were electrified by his awesome physique and physical wrestling style. Few fans, however, know that Batista didn't join the profession until he was thirty years old -- an age at which many wrestlers are thinking about hanging up their boots. Nor do most fans know the tremendous toll the climb to the top has taken on Batista's personal life. While successfully staying away from hard drugs and -- usually -- liquor, he found sex too tempting to resist.
"Women were my drug of choice," the Animal confesses. That addiction cost him his marriage, destroying a relationship that had helped him climb from poverty to the pinnacle of sports entertainment in less than two years.
Now, in Batista Unleashed, the WWE Superstar comes clean about the choices he made and the devastating effects they had on his family. He talks about the injury that stripped him of his title -- an injury he blames on Mark Henry's carelessness. While being sidelined cost Batista untold hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost income, it also set the stage for a tremendous comeback that cemented the Animal's reputation as a true champion.
Batista talks about growing up in the worst part of Washington, D.C., where three murders occurred in his front yard before he was nine. He speaks lovingly about his mother -- a lesbian -- and how hard she worked to keep the family not just together but alive. He talks candidly about his own criminal past: a conviction on a drug charge and another, since overturned, on assault. He speaks of his days as a bouncer and a lifeguard, and tells how bodybuilding may have saved his life.
Once he made it to the WWE, Batista realized he wasn't really ready for the big time. His career seemed headed for a fall until Fit Finlay took him under his wing. But his real education came when he joined Evolution and rode with Triple H and Ric Flair, two of sports entertainment's all-time greats. Batista talks about what they taught him, and details some of their wild times on the road.
But the champ also reveals a kinder, gentler side. While his soft-spoken manner in the locker room has sometimes been misinterpreted as arrogance, in truth Batista's always been somewhat shy and quiet. Emotional by nature, he reveals for the first time that the tears fans saw at WrestleMania 21, when he won the World Heavyweight Championship for the first time, were very real. And he speaks movingly about his problems with his ex-wives and teenage daughters, and how it felt to become a grandfather.

I know Batista is an idiot, but I'm gonna get this book... when it comes to paperback. Batista is essentially spilling the dirt on everything, and sharing his opinions of everyone. I hope he describes what it felt like to get his ass kicked by Booker T. This book should definitely generate a few laughs.

The McGuinness/Dragon match from ROH had me worried. Going into any match with a substantial level of hype, your expectations start higher than usual, so you're bound to be let down (say, if it's a very good match, it's not worth the hype surrounding it). I'm pleased to say this match met my expectations. Incredible wrestling and an incredible story. I think Danielson is a natural heel (his aura just oozes overconfidence), so it puzzles me why ROH lets him run as a tweener of sorts.

Please watch this match.
I think Danielson is a natural heel (his aura just oozes overconfidence), so it puzzles me why ROH lets him run as a tweener of sorts.
Personally, it's a hard to boo a guy I respect. I mean he can play the full blown heel, which he did at Respect is Earned, but when he is in the ring, goddamn the man makes you believe that he truly is the best in the world and being in conjunction with what ROH is about, I have a hard time telling him to go to hell and die....

But that's just me.

What did you think of the show overall?

A good PPV, but they need to improve their audio/video equipment immediately. I should be able to hear the ring announcers, I should be able to hear the ring music, and the video quality/lighting needs to be bumped up considerably. Anyone with cursory skills in iMovie can do better editing than was shown in the replays and on-screen graphics. ROH is a classy promotion that needs classy postproduction. They can't get away with 1991-style video edits.

Of course, it *is* all about wrestling (at the same time that's never been wholly true). A much better show than I expected. Kevin Steen surprised me with how good he was/how solid of a jerk he was (since he looks so bush league).

They shot their load with the Austin Aries thing too quickly and without explaining it.

I'm torn. It was a great wrestling show, but for its price, you think they would do more to welcome the casual fan into their storylines and wrestlers. If I had watched this with no prior ROH knowledge, I'd have been very impressed by the wrestling, but also felt left out, because this catered to people who already knew what was going on.

Do you get either the Louisville or Cincinnati CW channel? Because it's on both.
Don't know about the Louisville channel, but the cincy CW air it saturdays at 1 PM(when there's no football) & 2 AM sunday morning.

I think ROH has been playing it cheap for a while now to be able to pay its talent more handsomely. I loathe the ROH sound production. It's some of the worst sound work I've ever heard on a professional product and makes it hard for me to watch their stuff on TV. For some reason though computer speakers make the bad sound more bearable.

Just watched Dragon/Morishima from a Japanese feed, which I would advise everyone to skip since they muted the audience to an insane degree for the match to be more Japanese. Just wait for the ROH version.

Comparing Dragon/Nigel to Dragon/Morishima is tough since they are different types of matches. Dragon/Nigel is a lot more spontaneous (compared to Dragon/Morishima) with a mix of with technical wrestling and a couple of crazy spots.

Dragon/Morishima is far more straightforward and it's apparent the direction the match is heading in. However, the story of Dragon working the leg is richer than of Dragon working the back of Nigel. It's really an old school Bret Hart storytelling meets modern MMA type of match.

There is talk of using the 48-year-old Kevin Nash again as a wrestler.

Dutch Mantel is against the return, feeling he's burned TNA on doing jobs too many times in the past.

Vince Russo on the other hand, is pushing for his return because he was a star in the late 90s. Ultimately, it's Jeff Jarrett's call.
Another push for an already-over wrestler? C'mon.
