Harris and Palumbo?
Palumbo the Woman Beater... yeah, not a fan of this. It's too dark a storyline for two characters that the crowd just doesn't care about much (although they did chant "CHUCK'S A LOSER", so I guess he's kinda getting over). Still, the angle makes me uncomfortable more than it makes me mad at Chuck, although WWE hasn't outright said that he's beating her, which gives them an out if they get any flak over it. Maybe then Chuck can attend anger management classes or something. Palumbo's been hurt by JBL not putting him over like a million bucks on commentary, and neither Coach or Cole sound like they give a shit about anything when they're calling matches, which hurts any drama they're trying to build up in either matches or storylines.
The Dudleys pulled it off.

MyNetworkTV will be airing a special called "Wrestling's Greatest Secrets" this Wednesday at 9 PM. Not sure if that's the 1998 NBC special or not, but it could be worth checking out for a laugh if it is.

Michael Cole only works well when he's got a "bully" in the booth to play off of (JBL, Tazz, etc.). Without that dynamic, you've just got two non-entities on the mic, and it hurts the show as a whole.

That's weird that Harris is going to the WWE.

I wonder why TNA gave him that stupid crybaby gimmick...

Was it punishment, or was he the catalyst for a commentary on other wrestlers complaining? Either way, it was bad writing.

It was noted earlier in the week that a multi-time world champion was making his return to World Wrestling Entertainment.

That individual is none other than "The Big Show" Paul Wight. He has either signed with the company or agreed to a deal. He will be starting full-time imminently.

After leaving professional wrestling about a year ago, Wight started to pursue a possible career in boxing. He did some boxing training and got his weight down to about 440 pounds, thus leaving him in good shape. Wight had a boxing deal in place in which Hulk Hogan would have been his "front man" -- acting like a manager for him by doing promos and appearances. Hogan's involvement was the main reason many boxing promoters were actually interested in Big Show and paying him so much money to learn the sport.

However, his boxing aspirations fell apart at some point as Wight realized that at his age (soon to be 36), boxing might not be the right career move for him go in. Furthermore, there have been no recent updates or talks of Hogan doing his own wrestling tour, which would have involved Wight had it gotten off the ground. With nothing on the horizon for Wight, he decided that it was time for him to make his return to World Wrestling Entertainment.

most of you have already read this but figured id throw it out there anyway....

if hes actually slimmed down like people say, im all for it, which brand though?

What? Boxing? Is there even a weight class he would fit into?

I say hell yes to his return. For some reason I always liked him where other big lumbering slow guys were just boring. (see: unmasked Kane)

I'd say put him on Smackdown.

Raw is crowded and last thing I want to see is him back on ECW (he was really fucking up his body)

-edit Now that I think about it, Big Show should be the one who ends Ric Flair's career.

Everything over 200 pounds is considered a "heavyweight"

That's some fairly new news on Show, as that issue just hit the hands of some subscribers (like myself) today, while most will be waiting until Monday to read it. Here's a funny note about TNA PPV names from a JB interview that I got a laugh out of (in a good way).
We bring up a weird quirk for TNA PPV names. Many of them are named after Phil Collins and Genesis
song and album names. (Genesis, Against All Odds)
Here's a video of one of my friend's first matches. He wrestled under a different name than he normally does.

He's the masked one -- The Scourge. His normal name is Bile, I think.

Whoever his opponent was, was pretty bad.
Your friend looked pretty capable in there - he was clearly thinking as he was wrestling, working over the left knee of "Roy." Roy, OTOH, had little coordination in there, pulled his chops (!?!?!?!), and appeared at several points in the match to be trying to force his...spots?...in (unsuccessfully, mind you), and the clothesline he gave looked terrible. He looked like a guy who was trying these moves in the middle of wrestling school, focusing on form more than reacting to what's around him. Your friend took a dive a split second too early on the clothesline, so there wasn't much impact on it. Of course, Roy just stuck his arm out and ran with it, so both parties could have made it look much better.

If your friend doing this for the fun of it, or does he want to work towards a big promotion?

Apparently the Jay Briscoe thing last night was a work. He really got injured on Friday and so Gabe decided to do a spot on Saturday with him getting taken out involving the ladder.

"Roy" was supposed to do a Clothesline from Hell at the end there... (He was supposed to whip my friend into the ropes, run the ropes himself and just do a diving clothesline.)

Not sure why it when down like it did.

By the way, that "Roy" guy is supposed to have a Tommy Dreamer-like gimmick. One of my friends referred to him as "Pipe Dreamer".

Anyway, wrestling is most definitely my friend's dream.

He works for a local wrestling company, as a referee, part of the ring crew and does misc. Russorific things (like wearing a gorilla costume ringside). From the outside looking in, the owner of that company is your typical shark promoter -- my friend will say the same.

The owner of that company didn't want my friend to wrestle for the promotion featured in the video, but my friend did it anyway, under a generic name.

I don't blame him, honestly. That guy promises his ring crew the world, and completely under delivers. He dangles things in front of their face, just enough to keep them doing his grunt work for free.

I'll be sure to tell him that someone thought he was pretty good. ;)

Roy just looked like he was going through the motions of someone thinking through the process as they're doing it. Like when you get behind that fuckin' 16 year old who just realizes they have to parallel park their car for the first time.

Thinking too hard about it, instead of doing it naturally and reacting to the situation as it happens.

He does the clothesline like you would if you were runnin' across the backyard, and doesn't change or follow Scourge. The end result is that he skims his chest instead of lands a badass lookin' clothesline. That wasn't a Clothesline From Hell; it was a Clothesline From The Gated Community.

By the way, that "Roy" guy is supposed to have a Tommy Dreamer-like gimmick. One of my friends referred to him as "Pipe Dreamer".

An acquaintance of mine who is friendly with a large number of wrestlers told me WWE never pushed Tommy Dreamer after ECW folded because they believed he couldn't throw a believable punch for shit. Roy may be onto something, then.

Anyway, wrestling is most definitely my friend's dream.

If the promoter he works for isn't going to use him in his ring, your friend is totally in the right. If he hasn't, I'd recommend he read the Bruiser Brody biography by Larry Matysik and Barbara Goodish. It's not a perfect book, but the lessons a wrestler could learn (I imagine) from his mistrust of damn near every promoter (but especially his trust of promoter Sam Muchnick and the St. Louis territory) are essential, in this non-wrestler's opinion.

Both promoters, I'm sure, want to use him up and don't give a shit if he advances or not (but if he manages to get huge, they'll be the first to pat themselves on the back). But, if you have two guys that don't give a fuck about you, and that's who you can work for (or not work at all), then go to the guy who's gonna give you ring time.

I don't blame him, honestly. That guy promises his ring crew the world, and completely under delivers. He dangles things in front of their face, just enough to keep them doing his grunt work for free.

I bet he undermines the other promotions, either, making claims that they never had it as good as "youse guys do."

I'll be sure to tell him that someone thought he was pretty good. ;)

Well, it sounds like a putdown disguised as a compliment, but for being such a young wrestler, he showed a lot of intelligence in the ring. His moves looked decent, he worked on one part of the body for the most part, didn't feel the need to bust out a moonsault "just because it looks cool" and instead stuck with simple moves (suplex, half crab, etc.) he could do believably well, and (it looked like this) was able to handily suplex Roy even though Roy didn't appear to jump into it at all. Not quite a deadass, but far from being a good hand to have in the ring with you. So he's good for someone with his experience, y'know?

BTW, this may be asking a bit much - but was your friend about 20 or 30 pounds heavier than he currently is within the past 6 months or so?

I'd say he lost 10 or 20 pounds within the past 6 months.

I'll suggest that biography to him, too. Thanks.

Big Show coming back eh? Now that's actually pretty cool. Maybe he'll be the surprise winner of the Royal Rumble? Probably be a bad idea at this point though. Either way, I'm sure he'll be on Raw, and probably be a top heel under Vince.

Ron Killings is coming back for sure now too, most likely to ECW... right?

I havent watched wrestling in like 10 years, but my little sister just came back from her SAT classes and she said her teacher is "Sweet n' Sour". She also said he was on RAW last week. Is this guy a famous wrestler?

That's "Sweet n' Sour" Larry Sweeney. Fairly popular on the indie scene (Ring of Honor, at least), and a great talker. He hasn't been on Raw to my knowledge.

The last time Sweeney was on Raw was when he played Nick Hogan in a skit, and that was a year and a half ago. Sweeney's been fantastic in ROH though, and will be on their upcoming PPV (which is reviewed in the Observer, and graded as being worse than Driven, but also a different kind of show in how its matches are organized).

Could you elaborate on why the Observer thought it was worse than Driven?

I personally agree with the notion that the 4th is worse than Driven since I was there live for both the 4th and 5th PPVs (the 5th PPV is much better!). Edison, NJ crowds suck.

I'll scan the Observer later and post it, because I don't recall much of the review off-hand. Observer Live is tremendous tonight, as Don Callis told some death tour stories, including one run-in involving a deck of cards and the cribbage board used by Lance Storm and Don Callis. Also, Chris Nowinski was brought to ROH to give a speech to the roster at last night's show, and it could lead to a change in ROH's style to a degree.comparison for the upcoming PPV was for Man Up, not Driven, my mistake.

Edit - The PPV comparison was made to Man Up, not Driven - my mistake. Basically, it's a great show, but the first half is like a TV show, with short matches meant to get guys over, with the second half being dedicated to long, very good wrestling matches, so it isn't like Man Up, which was wall-to-wall great matches.

Those Adrian Street videos are a trip. If only the WWE had given Rico Constantino a run as the modern version of him...they dropped the ball with him, because a gimmick like Street's not only predates Goldust by 20-30 years or more, but was, in the early 1980's, far more risque than anything before or since (IMO).

Dude doesn't get the respect he deserves at all. But he does have LPs of his albums for sale on his website if you check it out.

Here's a proper one (skip to 1:03)
Dude was twitching...
I can't believe I'm saying this, but Hardy is actually doing well on the mic. I'm actually wanting him to win at the Rumble, even though the odds of that happening are about the same as me tripping over $1,000,000 when I go down to the kitchen later tonight for a snack.

So Orton wants a shot at the IC title tonight, eh? I'm actually hoping Jeff drops the title to him tonight, since it'll make it seem as if Jeff actually has a legitimate shot at winning at the Rumble (you know the deal, whomever gets the last laugh before a PPV is more prone to lose), and it'll also help the overall build-up, which they've been doing a damn good job of thus far.

I think that's what helped make him so hated years and years ago. I can see where you're coming from, but don't necessarily agree.

JEFF HARDY IS EXCITED! Well, he's getting better on the mic... not great yet, but okay. Still over as all-hell, and if Orton wins tonight, I wouldn't mind seeing Hardy get the world title for a quick run. Orton's WWE title reign didn't work out as well as anyone had hoped, so perhaps going with a totally new regular main eventer as champion would help things out.

Damn, WWE's doing a great job of building up tonight's IC title main event - they're actually backing up the statement by Orton with some footage to drive home the belief that history could be made tonight. Good to see.

So will HBK-Kennedy really end next week? I was hoping to see the feud continue with no more matchups til the Rumble, in which HBK would eliminate both Kennedy and himself with a running clothesline/crossbody/whatever. Then they would both be in the Elimination Chamber at NWO. HBK would probably eliminate Kennedy but be eliminated himself afterwards.

At WrestleMania, I'd give Kennedy the big win, with Shawn getting his win back at Backlash, possibly with a stipulation.

Agreed. Saying he's worse than Shelton is just dumb. I don't think there's anyone in WWE history who is as bad on the mic as Shelton Benjamin, save for Chyna & Lita.
