The "Messiah CompleX PWNS Countdown and WWH" Comic Discussion Thread

im thinking of sending some of my planet hulk issues to be graded, and my she hulk #8 CW tie -in(wizard has it listed at $25-$30). y'know, for selling them a year or two from now.

do they have to be immaculate to get a good grading?

is it worth the twenty bucks or so that it cost for a book to be graded?

has anyone here experienced the process?

*Idly watches the joke sail over slidecages head*
well if you sold out today you would still lost your butt.

Buy them at 50 sell them today around 25- 30 (since they sell now for 30 now)
I love how when I went to the LCS, the owner of it was like "Guys, did you see the holy crapness of this week? Ultimates 13 AND All Star Batman and Robin in the same week!?!??! All we needed now for this week was Ultimate Wolverine vs Hulk 3 to come out for the trifecta to be complete!"

So I ended up buying this week:

Countdown 50
Justice League of America 9
Fallen Son: The Death of Captain America - Captain America
Ultimates 2 13
Batman 665
Moon Knight 10
Exiles 94
Cable and Deadpool 40
Fables 61
Ultimate Spider-Man 109
Ultimate X-Men 82

It was weird for me buying Fables. For so long one of my friends would buy Fables and I'd just borrow her copy. Now that it's summer and we don't see each other as often, I have to buy my own copies. Plus I'm going to grad school now that I graduated and she's only a junior at our college, so we'll be in different places come next semester. It was just so weird actually picking Fables up myself.

Today I picked up All-Star Batman & Robin 5 and the Mouse Guard Hardcover. All-Star B & R is pretty decent, I just really wish the comic was pass the 5th issue. The Mouse Guard hardcover looks beautiful, can't wait to read it.

I loved Fallen Son: Death of Captain America even though it felt way too short. Countdown is still looking good.

Uncanny X-men was SHOCKINGLY good. From beginning to end "The Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire" was easily one of the best X-men stories in years.

I figured if UWvH had come out as well, the 4 horsemen would have walked through the front door.

I need to figure out a way to display U2 #13's 8 page fold out in the store. Stunning.

That was definitely my favorite issue of FS: DoCA so far. I'm slightly biased since I love both Hawkeyes with a passion, but there was just so much good about that issue. Plus there was the added bonus that it actually rightly portrayed that stage of grief (bargaining) as how it dealt with Captain America's death. Anger was just sort of the Mighty Avengers wanting to kill shit and the New Avengers playing poker besides Spidey actually portraying anger.

I don't know whether I'd say it was one of the best X-men stories in years (I think the other current main X-men comic storylines have been better [Astonishing's Torn and Unstopable, Adjectiveless' whatever they've all been called, and New's Mercury Rising and so far through Quest for Magik] but that's just me) but it was definitely good. There were a couple problems I had with it, first and foremost being
killing Corsair. He's seriously one of the only things I ever really enjoyed about X-men in space.
Also, I didn't like how it took forever for things to get going. It didn't really need to be a 12 issue arc. My other little problem is I didn't like that they left half the team (especially everyone I loved on the team) in space. That sorta dropped my interest in the next arc since it seems to be focusing on the people who got back to Earth and Storm....Blech to Storm.

Yeah, I think the world would explode if UWvH had also come out. But that 8-page foldout in U2 13 was marvelous. I had seen it before online but actually folding it out last night made it so much more amazing. Hitch is without a doubt one of the best artists out there. I had too much fun playing the "count the Quicksilvers" game with it.

I don't read New X-men anymore so I can't say anything about their storylines. Astonishing has had some good arcs and its had some not so good arcs. Its always interesting to read but sometimes the arcs are just kinda blah (like the current one). The adjectiveless storylines are alright but they tend to get kind of convoluted and difficult to follow. I think the last story I liked this much was Planet X from a few years ago of course the whole "that wasn't the real Magneto" after the fact was kind of a slap on the face and ruined the story but oh well.

I think what I really like about "The Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire" is that it had that feeling of having an epic scope and it still managed to remain an easy to follow storyline.
While I like Corsair his death did 2 things for me and this story. It helped put an exclamation point on the importance of this story and it also emphasized just how evil Vulcan has become.

Ultimates was a little disappointing. We waited how long for this? Art was beautiful, but it felt a let down. I did enjoy Natasha's fate, and ending didn't seem to fit. It seemed like it was tacked on to make us feel like we got more bang for a buck.

See, I was still a bit wary about Astonishing's current arc because I am NOT a fan of X-men in space at all. The X-men are so much better off when they're on Earth and not out in space where everything is about 100 times more powerful than them. But I've loved that Astonishing is still managing to focus on the characters and how they interact despite being out on Breakworld. I am absolutely loving the developments between Emma and Scott. Granted, I'm biased there too since Scott has always been my favorite X-men character and I prefer him with Emma over Jean and her always-being-resurrected-self. There was none of that with Rise and Fall of the Shi'Ar Empire. Plus the Shi'Ar weren't destroyed in the end like I had hoped. Although perhaps Vulcan will finish them off eventually. And the only thing that's been confusing about Adjectiveless to me was what was happening because Bachalo's art is so kinetic, but I've reached the point where I can decipher what is going on pretty well, so I'm loving Carey's work.

Like I said, I enjoyed RaFotSE, but there were definite problems with the entire arc. Vulcan never came off as anything but a whiny little brat. He wasn't an epic enough villain for me. He was just like every other space X-villain. Overpowered and boring. Just like that punk Gladiator.
While I can agree slightly on the death of Corsair being an exclamation point on the story, I felt they didn't have to actually kill him off. Corsair has always been by far one of the best things about X-stories in space and to think that he's no longer gonna be a part of them just sucks. And leaving Rachel, Havok, and Polaris out in space really sucks too. They were a big part of why I loved this team, and now that they're not gonna be a part of the story for awhile, I'm a little worried. Adding Hezibapah or however it's spelled was a good idea, I just wish we didn't lose so much of the team to get her.
Overall it was a good story but I feel we didn't need an oversized 12-issue arc to tell it. There were definitely some chapters that could have combined together or outright eliminated to get it down to a normal-sized 6-issue arc. This was decompression at its worst and best. I'm planning on reading through the arc again sometime in the near-future and we'll see if my opinion changes.

I got around to reading it a little bit ago. All I have to say is 8 page splash was more than worth the wait. I loved the way Tony got over Black Widow. That was some good stuff. The way Hawkeye got over Black Widow though, fucking AWESOME!

Those are some fair enough criticisms Karsh. Personally, I don't think the story would have been nearly as good if it had been in anything less than 10 issues. I've also never been a very big fan of the X-men in space stories and I think that's why I was so surprised how well this one turned out.
I was absolutely certain that the only reason the M'Kran crystal was there was so it could somehow give Xavier back his powers. Sure enough, that was the case. I know its probably a taboo x-fan thing to say but I'd really prefer it if Xavier never got his powers back. As of late given his Illuminati involvement, the Astonishing revelations, the Deadly Genesis revelations, continually covering for Magneto, and various other things I've pretty much decided the guy's a piece of trash. He tries to act like some benevolent teacher but he's really not much better than Magneto.

I finally read the Fallen Hero: Captain America issue and thought it was great. I was underwhelmed by the previous issues and didn't purchase them. This one had great art and a great character whom should take up the mantle of Cap.

All Star Batman and Robin was surprisingly good. I didn't like previous issues and think that All Star is the best comic around! This Batman is more of a Sin City version.

Countdown to me holds a lot of promise. I am really looking forward to this series because of the great success of 52.

ALSO: Do you guys know any good websites for comic supplies (comic boards, comic bags, comic boxes)? Thanks

Best part of Wolverine 54 Black and White variant? Absolutely no ads. That was great. Ended up buying:

New Avengers: Illuminati 3
Countdown 48
Amazons Attack! 2
X-23: Target X 6
Justice Society 6
Teen Titans 47

Can't wait to read X-23. This has been one of my favorite miniseries in a long time.

The Hulk better kill 2 or 3 major characters like Stark and Reed Richards or else it will suck. I don't care if they eventually come back, but some major players better fucking die!

Also I started reading comics again since last year and I can't believe what a nickel & dime industry it has become. You can't even get a full story line anymore without buying 4 or 5 different titles! Why can't the full hulk story be in the hulk comic? Why do they have to leave shit out and make you buy 20 other comics that have nothing to do with hulk?

And the last few Wolverine comics have been a joke. At the end of the last 3 issues wolverine or the other guy say that someone is going to die, yet no one dies and they are STILL fighting or whatever. WTF?

If anybody's interested in getting the Halo LS from Marvel next month take a look at Civil War: The Confession for an idea of how the art will look. Alex Maleev is the penciler for Confession and will be penciling Halo. His take on the Iron Man armor is a good preview for Master Chief. I wasn't going to get Halo originally but I'm a "maybe" now. The $4 per issue price isn't helping, though.
The Hulk better kill 2 or 3 major characters like Stark and Reed Richards or else it will suck.
I don't know if I wanna see heroes die (well sure Stark would be sweet) but I just really wanna see Hulk whoop some ass.

AND HE DOES!

Other than that anyone coming to Wizard World Philadelphia this year? I'll be there with the store I work at, or possibly over near the Suicide Girls tryin' to say "What's up."

Finished reading WWH and I liked it. The art was excellent. Mr. Pak has really improved as a writer and I believe this series will be more satisfying than Millar's Civil War.

Is it me, or are they trying to make Tony Stark likable?
Is it me, or are they trying to make Tony Stark likable?
It's you.

I dunno. I felt like they were trying to make Tony likable when he gave his speech in WWH. However, that was immediately trumped by
Hulk smashing the SHIT out of Tony and demolishing Avengers Tower during it.
WWH definitely had a better first issue than Civil War. We'll see how satisfying it is overall considering I'm one of the few people who enjoyed CW throughout.

He kept gassing on about accepting responsibility and biting Pete's lines, but the entire time he was trying to dodge what he did. Tried to get Strange to fix it for him, tried to get Sentry to back him, tried nuking Hulk flat. None of that addresses the fact that he's responsible for where Hulk's at now. None of it was "wow, I killed millions of people, including your wife? I should probably at least go to jail forever for that, if not be killed." Likeable would have been walking up to Hulk, sans suit, saying "you don't need to wreck anything. I'm right here." What he did was more Tony looking out for Tony, just like Civil War.

So with the New Avengers reveal, the Hulk will definitely "Smash" at least one A-list star who will be a............

With this reveal, I am thinking X-Men (2nd series) 89-90 & Uncanny 370 may go up in value seeing how this story is the origin of the "plan".

So is he dead?

Did Hulk smash Black Bolt to death? It looked like it.

He better have not survived that.

no i dont think so..i think he was saying overe the tape that if he doesnt see stark that he will kill black bolt and destroy NYC.

anyone going to bigapplecon this saturday?

I can't wait for the Endangered Species one shot tomorrow. I always love a good X-event and this one seems good. It was cool seeing the reveal of Messiah CompleX live at Wizard World last weekend. I especially love the idea that the event is going to show just how awesome of a leader Cyc is. Being the only person in the world whose favorite X-Men character was always Cyclops, this is awesome news.

I'm also debating whether I should get Flash: The Fastest Man Alive 13 today. I started reading the new Flash series when it started, and got bored quickly, dropping the title. But I'm almost curious to see whether Bart actually lives or not. Maybe I'll just wait for someone to post a spoiler...*hint hint*

I would hate to see Black Bolt die. There are too few of King Kirbys guys left who havent died in one way or another.

...speaking of which...

For an ongoing book with no title character, Captain America is super duper. It is the best comic (in my humble opinion) on the shelves. The Winter Soldier is GREAT. The creative team for CAPs book should just do a Winter Soldier ongoing series.

I declare Cap #27 to be...awesome!(Mr. show reference)
Iron Man #19 is pretty good, too.
Hulks book keeps getting better. Of coure.
Xmen endangered species was blah. I didnt know that the entirety of this story is to be told in 8-page backup stories. And since I dont get any X books (just Astonishing TPBs) I kind of wasted my money there. Oops.

This was great. So I picked up the Michael Turner variant for Fallen Son this week. As you might know, this was due out last week, but it never made it cause they messed the covers up. Well, I read the first 6 pages and the Rhino/Spidey fight starts....And the issue restarts and the same six pages happen. Then it skips the enitre fight, and I'm up to the point with Wolverine and Spidey on the bridge. I get to the end of the issue....And those six or so pages are repeated again. I'm like ".....What the fuck?" So it looks like Marvel fucked this issue up again. Anyone else's like this? Maybe it was only the variant covered ones.

My local comic shop finally recieved half of their comic shipment. They told me that they would get the rest of their shipment on Monday.

What I got this week:

JLA#10: An excellent issue. I loved how they ...can't say too much.

Countdown: Hunh? Kind of confusing? What the heck happened to Washington D.C.?

Captain America: Excellent issue. I wasn't too sure what to think about Bucky Barnes ressurection, but it's come out very well. The only thing I hated about it: the wait for next month's issue.

Brave and Bold: Okay, kind of going a little slow, but like Countdown, I am willing to wait for something to heat up.

Amazing Spider-Man: Meh, I really doubt Peter Parker has the guts to cross the line toward Punisher territory.

After reading through most of it this week, I have to say that The Red Star is pretty goddamn awesome. Alternate universe steampunk Russia is so cool.

edit: of course it helps that the art is so very gorgeous. Look at Troika. So badass...

Is it just me or does anyone else want
aunt May to die already? She better not go in a comma and come out later or worse come out as Spider May.

Due to budget reasons, I've missed out on the Captain America storyline after he died. I resently saw Punisher with what looked like a Capt. America Outfit and today on marvel.com I saw a preview pic (wallpaper) for "Captain America: The Chosen". Can anyone give me a quick recap of what's going on? Is he being replaced, cloned, revived?

Cap is dead. Like, really dead. Sniped by Crossbones then took two in the gut from his ladyfriend Sharon Carter (who has been brainwashed, of course).
The Winter Soldier has cut ties with Nick Fury and gone into hiding whilst he plans his next move. A worthy quest, to kill Tony Stark(YEA!). Before he did, however, he stole the shield of his fallen Captain for safe keeping. The Falcon and Sharon(still under the influence of brainwashing) are on The Winter Soldier's trail to stop him before he does anything...rash.
I'm becoming a huge Winter Soldier fan. He's like the Punisher meets Batman with just a little Cap sprinkled on top. Just a little.
I'll say it again, best book on the shelves.
The only news on Cap's replacment was in The Initiative. There was a grandson of the guy who invented the super soldier formula. The kid was the perfect human, like genetically or something. He was killed by friendly fire while in training. It was great. At the begining of Cap's last issue Stark says on the news that there will never be another Cap. But we all no better, right?

Been having this conversation lately, "Who would be Cap in a movie?" I can't think of anyone.

Sinestro Corps = HOLY SHIT!

It's getting to the point where I really can't see anyone thats a hero surviving the next year in DC. So lopsided in "evils" favor after this issue.

Sinestro Corps was the best single issue I've read in a long time. I think DC could have done a massive crossover (a la Infinite Crisis) with the concept of a corp of Bad Asses against the universe.

yep MVP was shot in the head by Armory who has a weapon that can change shape. This happend because Trauma who can morph in to the thing you fear most..change in to a giant spider and made armory wig out. She was about to shoot Could 9 but MVP jumped in to save her and he got his head blown off...The Avengers Initiative is looking interesting.

Dont forget the other would be Cap replacement. I remember reading the fallen son cap america issue with Hawkeye and the Young Avengers Hawkeye. Stark wanted Hawkeye to become the new Cap...and he actually wore the costume. he then saw the young hawkeye and asked her why she took his name. she said its an ode to her favorite hero. after that...Hawkeye gave the cap costume back and became the new Ronin.

Choice #2 = hell no. He looks flawed (which helps distinguish his looks) but definitely makes him totally unbelievable as Cap. Cap is PERFECT. The embodiment of human perfection. The guy has to be better looking than 99% of male models on earth.

No one could realistically play him. Definitely none of the A list actors out there. It would have to be some All American farm boy (or a meathead model, or some Euro/Nordic/Germanic uber athlete that would leave us with a horrible accent), like they got for Superman Returns.

Brad Pitt would be a poor, poor, pooooooooor man's excuse, but probably the best Hollywood could muster right now. Maybe Josh Hartnett (if he added 50 pounds of muscle)??? Christian Bale would have been a good choice, with dyed hair, but the Distinguished Competition has typecast him out of this role...
