The New, But Not Improved Firmware Thread: 4.00 Currently Available
I can't believe people trust in geohotz. Pretty amazing.
Yeah, it's pretty sad. Next thing you know, Sony will discontinue letting you download the firmware onto USB or CD.

I hope they shut this guy down before he's able to propagate the hack.

I love it when people say Geohot is doing it from the goodness of his heart. Especially when saying this

I'm less opposed to piracy on the PS3 as I am on the iPhone. Obviously, it must not hurt the game manufacturers that bad, or they wouldn't continue to release PC versions of games. And if a modchip is required, that will eliminate a huge chunk of would be pirates. If you are willing to open up your system, learn some electronics, and solder, perhaps you deserve free games. I hate the tools who download blackra1n then ask me where their free apps are, and wish Apple had better DRM, which none of the top guys in the iPhone scene would touch.

Geohot is a slickster. He knows his coding/hacking basics, but like somebody else said he makes the TOOLS for the actual hackers, but he tends to not hack much himself; yet gets most of the credit.

People talk about the tools he makes rather then the people who use them, but I suppose that is OK. You don't congratulate your neighbor for using a John Deer lawnmower, you give kudos to John Deer co.
Word is, that the 3.21 hack is just 3.15 renamed to 3.21. Thats his CFW. Very hardcore and awesome.
See, the funny thing is this kid talks about everything he does, thus, giving Sony a heads up about what to look for...dumb ass.

So his statement pretty much proves that he's not really a gamer, and doesn't give a shit about gamers. Most any gamer that keeps up with the industry knows that the PC has been on a steep decline, and the games that you do have over there have terrible DRM restrictions (that sometimes damage your PC).

He pretty much has an entitlement mentality that puts his desires over the hard work of game developers and everyone else. What a douche.

That certainly is douchey. There is no arguing with that.

I can understand WHY Sony would try to remove a potential attack vector on their device, I just think they are woefully misguided in how they went about it. I firmly believe that a firmware update and/or software update would have stopped the attack vector while retaining the functionality; they chose not to do that, for whatever reason.

Linux on the PS3 is already rather sandboxed, as I understand it.. no direct access to any hardware or anything. It wasn't as though Geohot was a day away from a pirate hack.

The overblown response to a difficult and mostly useless hack in the name of security is what annoyed me about it - the principal of the thing is what I find repellent.

Oh well. Life goes on.

:applause:

Here's the other BS with 3.21, since one hand at Sony can't talk to the other:

I reserved 10% of my drive for OtherOS, which in my case is about 32GB (320GB drive in mine). The ONLY way I can get that space back is with a full wipe and reformat. It sucks but understandable. The problem lies in locked game saves. The backup utility does not back these items up, however the transfer utility actually lets you move them. So the only process to keep everything is to do the following steps:

a) find a second PS3 (we'll call it PS3 B)
b) transfer all of my data from PS3 A to PS3 B
c) wipe, format PS3 A
d) transfer all of the data from PS3 B to PS3 A

The problem with finding a transfer unit is it more than likely wipes all of the data off of the target. So it's not as simple as asking to borrow a friend's PS3 for the day. If they would remove the backup restriction I wouldn't be nearly as pissed about 3.21. Yeah I'm pissed they removed OtherOS, but even more pissed that I have to spend hours jerking around with backups and datamangling just to get the full functionality of the hardware supported in a 3.21 state.

Doing a backup to the same console includes all locked game saves. Its only when you transfer to a NEW console that the locked saves dont show up when you do a usb hdd backup.

http://blog.eu.playstation.com/2010/04/22/ps3-3-30-system-software-update/

Since the US blog isn't working for me, here's the details on the new update:
Hi everyone, in our continued effort to provide the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible, we’ll be adding a few new features to PlayStation 3 (PS3) via the latest system software update, which is a mandatory update and will be available shortly. Most notably, you’ll see some new sorting options within Trophies that make it easier to claim bragging rights among your friends on PlayStation Network.

Trophy enhancements –- Now you can more easily sort trophies in the [Trophy Collection] and [Comparing Trophy] sections. Sorting can be done with [Trophy Collection] in the [Game Category] and also when comparing trophies with your friends in the [Friend Category]
 • Trophy Folder (Title List) can be sorted by game name/ by title according to the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
 • Add-on list (Group list) can be sorted by original/the date in which you earned your last trophy (ascending/descending)
 • Trophy list can be sorted by original/trophy name/grade/date of obtaining the trophy (ascending/descending)

In addition, this update preps the PS3 system for some upcoming new features, including 3D stereoscopic gaming, which is coming soon to PS3, in time for the launch of Sony’s 3D BRAVIA TVs.
Sorry. :whistle2:(

The US blog isn't working for me either. So we have ANOTHER friggin' update AGAIN?

And it's for more useless crap(trophies).:applause: As usual, Sony delivers in the areas I care about most.

Well, I do collect trophies. So it is a little bit of a spiffy update, but couldn't they include this in the last one?

Maybe they're going to try and hit people with multiple updates in quick succession to get all of the now jaded people who are still miffed about 'other OS' being taken away to forget about that debacle?

Or maybe its business as usual since the people who give a crap about OtherOS are so small they don't even matter anymore. I forgot OtherOS was removed, thats how useless it is to the majority of PS3 owners out there. Get the eff over it. Its gone and never coming back, and the douchebag who caused it to go away is gone and not saying anything anymore about his miracle CFW for PS3 (LOL @ anyone who had faith in this kid).

Im looking forward to the update, i plan on getting a 3D display for my PC setup so ill get to check out 3D gaming soon!

You are right about the other OS people being too small of a group for Sony to even give a damn about, since it seems like the only shit they ever add is for the idiots who care about showing off their e-peen with their 'trophies' or chat with their 'friends' on the PSN network.

Then again, I guess that's all Sony is willing to give users for FREE is crap they can have the monkeys who obviously program some of these worthless updates program within a week.

I saw cheapest post. So it must be update time soon. ;)

I always wondered something else. Do you play online straight? These updates really seem to bother you when they don't anyone else. I know it takes you a while to download it,but that shouldn't be a big deal since they rarely have a update and you know when its coming.

But it cuts into my playing time when I have to wait for the crap to download and nothing in the updates is EVER really useful for me. About the only thing they've added via update that was of any use to me was text chat.

But even that I don't use often enough for it to be useful enough to have wasted my time downloading and installing it.

If they gave you the option of unchecking crap you don't want(trophy sorting, anything with trophies, Facebook icon(s), etc)and only getting the actual bug fixes and other system related stuff that should be the ONLY necessary parts, I would have less of a problem with the updates.

Or at least if they let you play your games and THEN update(or not) AFTER playing your games, then I wouldn't have as much of a problem with the updates either.

But they hold your ability to go on PSN hostage until you download the ALWAYS fuckin' MANDATORY updates. Even if it isn't mandatory at the time(3.21 was only for fat PS3 owners at first, I believe), then they will make it so you have to download and install it, even if it has nothing to do with anything on your system.

You should own a 360 instead as much as you hate the update. xD

I really wish there is a option to keep trophy timestamps private. It sucks when other people you know find out you blew them off to play some games.

I've said it before and I'll say it again now, I would've owned a 360 instead of a PS3 if not for the failure rate. I don't like the thought of having to send in my console every so many months for repairs.

Otherwise, the bulk of the games I wanted to play were multiplatform and most of the PS3 'exclusives' have been utter crap(though at least one was impressive, but SHORT) thus far to me.

The group who prefers a different OS is much larger than you guy/gals think. If it wasn't, why would Sony waste their time disabling (or trying to) the function.

Cheapy stated twice that the community (not all are hackers..most are Linux/RedHat, etc Programmers/Developers and people that want to just see what makes it tick) have now declared war on Sony and he is correct. Sony just better hope the "wrong side" of the community doesn't hop on board. Expect Sony "updates" more often in the near future to combat this (as well as some cool new features for the ones who still have their non-PS3 OS).

The only war they declared was in their bitching. They haven't done squat. And don't expect them to. There is a reason the PS3 hasn't been hacked this entire time, while the 360, Wii, PSP and DS are all busted wide open for homebrew.

p.s. - Im at 3.30 already.

LMAO The US PS Blog is down again. But I will admit that once the update hit 60% or so it went up to 100% pretty damn quick. Just sucks that it took so long to get to 60%.

Took less than 2 minutes to download, and 6 minutes total. Damn Sony to hell for cutting into my play time. (Only kidding. I turned the PS3 right off and went back to watching my Spurs.)

Although Paco blames your Brazillian internets, Cheapest, I know where the blame really lies with your constant "fuck Sony" posts everytime there's a new firmware. I blame FriskyTanuki.

If Frisky would stop informing us of these updates so quickly, your Brazillian internets would probably take a week to catch up to the news. Damn you, Frisky!

Actually, once the update hit 60% it downloaded pretty quickly. But it's the point that these updates hold nothing of interest for me, so why not just give people like me the ability to choose ONLY the bug fixes and skip all of the fluff crap?

I think a ban from Sony is coming soon, since NONE of my comments on the US PS Blog are showing up AT ALL.

Then again, I guess maybe they had to be moderated for constantly calling their programmers monkeys and them idiots and morons for forcing EVERYONE to update to this crap.

If it happens, oh well. Then I go back to playing my games like I did last gen and I buy the games I'm gonna play used or really stupid cheap on clearance anymore.

If you got banned from posting comments, I'd expect a bunch of others from the comments I've read. Some of them are just spamming posts, so Id imagine it's just clogged up more than usual.
fuckin' update is LIVE, people. YAY!!! Nothing like losing 45 minutes of play time to some bs update....AGAIN! Thanks Sony, you fuckin' douchebags.
I updated in five minutes.

So, are there any games out currently that support 3D? I thought Super Stardust HD was supposed to.

I want the 3D Blu-ray update already.

Looks like the TOS changed. Don't know what's changed tho. I did read that you can only transfer PSN purchases to 3 machines now instead of 5. Thought I read that this was changed some time ago, but other than that, I cannot see much difference.

That was a typo before, have they not fixed it after all this time or is it real now?

There would be a massive backlash if they dropped the share limit to 3. I don't think they are that crazy.

Oh please Sony not this again. Hope it's still just a typo. If anyone finds anything out about this please post.
