The New, But Not Improved Firmware Thread: 4.00 Currently Available

fuck! Don't tell me the sync issues are back with this latest update. I set my system to update while I got ready for work. When I came back down I pressed the PS button to "wake up" the controller and all I got was the fast blinking red lights on the back of it. It would not sync.

It feels like every time there's an update, after it installs, my PS3 tells me that "the correct hard disk couldn't be found," and I have to turn it off and on again to get it to start up properly.

If anyone can find the old TOS and the new one, I can give you the differences. PM both to me. Or, you can do it yourself, download a program called "TK Diff" and it will do a diff for you.
You do realize there's a dedicated firmware thread not even 10 threads above yours, right?
At the time I posed this that was labeled as the old firmware thread, I didn't realize that it was updated with each new firmware release. I figured it was as a "bitch" thread about losing Linux support.
Took ages to download man
They always do. That's why I just download to my PC first and then install it via flash drive.

I'm typing this on my phone so I can't link the sites but I've seen a few reports of 3.30 breaking PS3's. The problem people are running into this time is disc read errors. The update is allegedly causing the PS3 to not read any forms of disc media.

Looks like the video part of the TOS was updated to mention something called Qriocity (Curiosity?):
You may use either your Qriocity account or PSN account to purchase video content.
http://qriocity.com/

Seems to be a new VOD service for their Bravias and PCs that will probably be merging with the PSN Video Store at some point in the future.

Ugh, I really don't care about 3d support. I finally got a nice tv and I'm not gonna be spending 3-4 grand on a tv that'll go 3d. No thanks.

Too bad Sony won't add support to the things fans have been wanting for years! Cross Game Voice Chat is a big one and I want .MKV support damnit!

LOL So I was right and the code monkeys screwed up again, huh? Beautiful. I know my PS3 had no issues after the update last night, but now I'm leery to turn it on out of fear of the controller sync issues and/or the system not reading anything.

Way to go, Sony, you fucking idiots.

My PS3 works just fine after the update, and I'm sure it's the same for 99.9% of other PS3 owners....

Every single FW update regardless of whether it's from MS, Sony, Nintendo, Apple or whoever has a few people that experience problems (does anyone deny this?). Calling the company idiots for that, especially when you yourself don't have problems, is in fact idiotic. But I suppose that isn't a new discovery.

Not entirely....this is a closed system, similar to Apple hardware, the Wii, and the 360. I would not lump MS in there entirely because you put the PC in there and that is a crap shoot as far as hardware goes.

Now, it may be hardware issues, as I have had sporadic issues with my slim dropping all controllers since 3.15. I have not had the same experience with my fatboy. Now, if they are having some issues, maybe Sony (and maybe they are already) should query the hardware before pushing updates and tailor the updates to the model #. This is what they should be doing.

Had to cancel out when downloading the firmware twice, was stuck at 10%. 3rd times a charm and had it going.

So, no need to sync with someone else to get a trophy list going?

Why don't they deserve to be mentioned with the other console manufacturers?

I haven't investigated yet, but there may be some more unlisted features such as better Flash support, region-free BD support fixed, more BD Audio Output settings, future support for PC remote play on VAIO PC's.

http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2010/04/22/ps3-firmware-3-30s-hidden-features/

Deets:
Last night’s System Software Update, which takes the PlayStation 3 to version 3.30, didn’t just add Trophy sorting and 3D support for games, it also updated the version of Flash used in the PS3’s browser. Fans of sites like YouTube will now find that the PS3 is quite happy throwing around videos of Slow Loris’ being tickled, or, you know, something great like our very own TSAtv. In addition, the issue with some region-free Blu-ray disks (such as the BBC’s Life) has been fixed, leading some to speculate that the Blu-ray profile within the PS3 has been updated in preparation for 3D support.
Of course, Flash, 3D and the Blu-ray fix aren’t the only things on offer this update, with considerable work being done on the Trophy Lists. You can now sort your Trophies by title and date, which is nice, and you can also look into the add-on lists and sort there too, although most games don’t use this feature yet. You can also sort by Trophy grade, too, so all your Plats can sit at the top.
Despite a reasonable update list, version 3.30 was mostly tweaks and additions to the software development kit, changes that we as consumers won’t be seeing for a little while yet. Recent such SDK changes include a smaller footprint for the firmware, and although there’s no games that yet use the extra RAM now available, the improvements were welcomed by developers.
We’ll be on the lookout for any other new features today – if you find any, drop us a comment below.
Update: It appears there’s a new BD Audio Output setting under Video Settings: [(Direct)] and [Bitstream (Mix)] have been added for optical output. More info here, thanks TTP.
Update 2: There’s now an option for PC remote play. We’re investigating this.
Update 3: PlayStation.com answers the PC remote play question: “You can now select [PC] as an option under [Remote Play Settings] > [Register Device]. When you select this option, you will be able to use the remote play feature to operate your PS3 system from future models of the VAIO PC. Details of this feature will be announced on the official VAIO website at vaio.eu/playstation in May 2010″ (Thanks to Daveh_MK via Twitter for pointing that out.)

Anyone else notice audio oddities? Almost sounds like fake 3d/simulated surround sound. I'm just using my TV speakers.
Startup sound sounds different, as does starting the Store.
Haven't tried a game yet.

Oh, I really hope that there's some way to work around the fact that you need a Vaio.

Things would be even better if I could just use the Other OS, though.

I did a search and found someone else had sound issues (namely, no sound) after 3.30 that was remedied by unplugging and replugging the HDMI cable. Worked for me as well.

I'm going to hold off and wait for a few days until the "kinks" get worked out, I have enough stuff from the JPN PSN to finish d/l'ing on my list that I'm in no rush to update anytime soon and have something screw up. Let's hope the issues reported are rare and not common. **knocks on wood**

^ I need to open a Japanese account, I really want a good Mahjong game (the real game, not solitaire). I wish PSN cards were universal.

I do the same, sadly they take from 2 to 3 days to update the website with the correct link

Does the Japan PSN store have any free games, themes (dynamic), soundtracks that are not free in a US account?

The UK store has two or three dynamics themes: Motorstorm, Wipeout HD and I think another one, but I'm not 100% sure

Mine is working fine after the update, trophies seem to be syncing a lot faster now as well. It used to hang at 92 percent for 10-15 seconds before .
jpn has that sweet afrika dynamic theme
Sadly no longer free, though it was for a couple of months

What is the third one? Try to think 'bout it, and if it comes to ya- let me know!
Does the Japan PSN store have any free games, themes (dynamic), soundtracks that are not free in a US account?
The only free game (well more like a demo) was a PS1 domino puzzle game, that's the only PS1 demo I've ever seen anywhere ever come up on the PSN. And there was a PS3 game that was free at one point, the one with the weird cat thing, some sort of Sony mascot, Frisky talked about it along time ago when I mentioned getting it a few years back (way back in this thread, and I mean waaaay back)

You might want to ask Mykevermin, Rolento, Dallow, or one of the other guys as they'd probably know more than me, I don't investigate outside of the new release area or look at the PS1 section to see what's new very much.

And since I can't read Japanese, it's a crap shoot as to what I usually get if I'm just grabbing stuff blindly all I know is the white box with no number or yen symbol is free stuff. ;)

I did post some info over in PSN store update page about some neat videos of their Game Diggin' segments for PS1 games / retro games, that might be interesting to check out.

http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=180647&page=255

Didn't want to take this topic too far off track, though since it's the firmware topic, I'd suggest moving all JPN PSN store inquiries over to the PSN Store topic. ;)

Sorry.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2010...ystem-software-update-v3-40-available-soon-2/

Hi everyone, once again we’re adding new features to the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system via firmware update to ensure we’re bringing you the best, most comprehensive entertainment experience possible. PS3 system software update (v3.40) will be available soon, adding the PlayStation Plus subscription, enhancements to the connection between your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts and more. Additionally, we’ll be launching system software update (v6.30) for the PSP (PlayStation Portable) system simultaneously with PS3 system software update (v3.40), adding PlayStation Plus compatibility as well as other new features.

We’ve gone ahead and provided a few highlights from PS3 firmware update (v3.40) below:

 • PlayStation Plus: PlayStation Network users will be able to purchase membership to PlayStation Plus; a new subscription service on the PlayStation Network that provides you with new options to expand and enhance your gaming experience and enable you to gain an exclusive set of features and content. Friendly reminder, all of you PlayStation Network users will continue to have free access to PlayStation Network’s unmatched and expanding suite of new and exclusive features while PlayStation Plus subscribers will gain access to an exclusive and expanding set of gaming features, content and functionality.
 • Photo Gallery: A new network based photo sharing feature is now available on the Photo Gallery. The enhancement allows you to upload, browse and comment on photos on Facebook and Picasa Web Album. You can also opt to share your photos between your PlayStation Network friends as well as print photos from Photo Gallery.
 • Video Editor & Uploader: Video Editor and Uploader is a new function found on the XrossMediaBar (XMB), which enables you to edit, save and upload video files stored on the PS3 system to sites such as Facebook or YouTube.
 • Five Star Rating Support: Users can rate the PlayStation Store content they have purchased with one to five star ratings.
 • Power Save Settings: The default setting for PS3 System Auto-Off will be set at 2 hours, providing you with additional power save options and further improving power save features on the PS3 system.

In addition to the latest features introduced in PS3 system software update (v3.40), a separate, new PlayStation Network application on Facebook.com will be made available. This builds upon what was previously launched with Trophies and the ability to publish purchases from the PlayStation Store. Now you can further integrate your PlayStation Network and Facebook accounts with this new application. The application allows you to display your PlayStation Network profile on your Facebook account, find out which of your Facebook friends have a PSN account and send them a PlayStation Network friend request, view your PSN friends’ online status and add the PlayStation Network application tab to your Facebook user profile.

We’re very excited to be able to provide you with continued system software upgrades, which ensure your PS3 and PSP systems remain compelling offerings for years to come. For more details and instructions on how to update the system software for the PS3 and PSP systems, please visit http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Features/SystemUpdate and http://us.playstation.com/support/systemupdates/psp/.

Not a lot in here for me personally, but I can definitely see where some users may be excited about the Picasa, Facebook, and Youtube functionality.

I was fairly excited by PSN+ upon announcement, but then Sony continued to "clarify" the service and dashed a lot of my hopes.

1. On the day of the announcements, Joystiq and others reported that proper peer to peer and group chat were finally coming only to be "clarified" the next day that it was something they were looking at for the future.

2. Leading up to the announcement, Sony hinted that game patches and other updates would be made a bit more painless. I unfortunately assumed that meant they were finally going to beef up their network and server infrastructure so that patch and update downloads would occur relatively quickly like on Live. Instead, they have enabled automatic overnight downloading. This is actually a decent feature, but dashed my hopes for a beefed up infrastructure. It takes longer to "sync trophies" on PSN then it does to download full game patches on 360.

3. I was very excited when Tretton mentioned on stage that everyone would be getting a couple free months. This seemed like a great way to try the service to see if it were actually worthwhile. It was a bummer to later have this clarified as free months only after a year's purchase. :(

Does not seem like too bad of an update. What does Cheapest have to say?

Haha. I think the new stuff they added is pretty neat. I expect cheapass to start his regular bitching as usual. You think he would get tired of complaining about every single update.

I don't like how they continue to be vague about what you get with Playstation Plus. It's not good for business.

Automatic downloading SHOULD NOT be a for pay feature.

Did someone say PSN update and Cheapest? TIEM TO USE THIS!

I wonder if it would have just been better for Sony to follow the Xbox live model from the get-go rather than trying to crow bar it in years after people are used to it in its current form?

PSN+ puts Sony in the position of competing against against their own free offering... the only way PSN+ will ever *really* take off is if PSN free becomes Xbox Live Silver; which pretty much only exists as a teaser for Xbox Live Gold. If PSN+ doesn't sell well, I would fully expect Sony to strip out free online from the free PSN.

I certainly hope they don't, though.

That's impossible to do this generation since they've harped on it for around four years. They'd have to do that starting NEXT generation. But free online gaming will most likely stay throughout the PS3 lifetime. It's the PS4 launch we need to be concerned about.

yeah psn wont be a pay service exclusively to do that youd have to make sure ps3 owners get the same level/quality of online service that xbox players get if not better. as is they can at least say "hey its not the best but at least you dont need to pay for it". if anything i think theyll keep adding to the psn+ service in a way to get more people to want pay for it while still keeping the free service as is.
