The New, But Not Improved Firmware Thread: 4.00 Currently Available
Wow. I think Sony finally fixed the slow downloading thing. I figured I'd turn on my PS3 to download this garbage, since this is about when I usually get on to play anyway and it's up to almost 80% within 5-10 minutes.

Congrats Sony, you finally fixed something right.

EDIT: Wow. It's done within 20 minutes. Amazing. Now if they'd just add something USEFUL to these updates it'd be even better.
I noticed it was even faster than usual. Sometimes it was like 10-15 mins total. Last night it was 2-3 mins for everything including the install.

I'm surprised. If Sony can keep the fw downloads to that miniscule an amount of time I might lessen up a bit on the complaints about them. But I have a feeling that it didn't take that big of a file to do whatever they did, which is why it was a quicker download this time.

considering the fact that these firmware updates are usually mandatory (in the sense that you can't do anything online if you don't install and since games can require firmware updates eventually it blocks your games, heck since Blu-Ray can require firmware it technically can block your movie watching as well) I'd much rather just have them auto-install the updates and just present me the EULA afterwards.

That's the only thing that would still have me complaining bout the firmware updates is the fact that they're mandatory 9 times outta 10. Most of it is just junk too(more PS Store icons, sparkly background, etc). At least w/ my PC I can still delete extra shit my service providers try cramming in under the guise of 'updates'.

Maybe Sony finally got new/better servers and/or got the monkeys who were working there to stop flinging their poo at the old servers finally? Either way, I didn't even notice any differences and I looked around. So what the fuck did they change again?

Displays recommended games in the PlayStation Store now. So really, the download file size was very small compared to other updates.

That explains why it didn't take that long then. I was kinda hoping it was that Sony started getting new servers to specifically run the updates on and stopped using the ones they have now.

They finally introduce the ability to patch the firmware instead of downloading the entire thing...and yet you still complain. You must live a sad life.

And you don't when you have to insult another video gamer over being annoyed that they wasted even 10-15 minutes of time they could've been gaming for what appears to have been no real changes?

I am grateful for the much smaller download file size and I hope they do this from now on. But I really wish they would put in a list of what is included with the downloads instead of just saying 'zomg you MUST download this NOW' and not telling you shit about what they're burning into the HDD on your PS3 that you won't be able to delete.

And yes, I wish I could delete some of these silly fuckin' updated things that mean squat to me from my PS3, even if it only gave me one half of one half of one half of one percent of a gig of space back.

That's still space I PAID FOR that they took up with shit garbageware.:bomb:

I agree with Cheapest, all of those extra things should be offered like Applications/Widgets on the PSN store, so only those interested in Photos/Videos/Recommendations etc would download them

My gaming time is pretty scarce as it is, so even if it's a 15 minute wait, it's 15 minutes that I can't play at all

From a legal standpoint I don't think they could, also from a technical standpoint.

What would they do if you rejected the new EULA? I don't think they can ask for permission (which accepting the EULA gives them) after they apply the changes to your device. Additionally, I don't think that they would want to technically implement firmware downgrading should one reject an update that had already been applied.

Hope I never run into that issue...I haven't had a need to upgrade my hard drive since the update so I can't comment much on it, but this 3.41 update is the first one I've done from the PS3 itself (downloading via the XMB) and not by putting it on a flash drive from Sony's website and then transferring it over.

I'm hoping this apparent patching-vs.-full-downloading that 3.41 introduces doesn't cripple the chances for future hard drive upgrades if this doesn't get fixed. My guess is that the system wants a full firmware at the ready and not a "patched" one like the 3.41 update, so it's acting screwy.

Hopefully they don't go back to the full sized files though, since that last download/install wasn't that bad. As for the current firmware causing issues, weren't there issues with other full sized firmware files before as well?

Like I've said before, it has a little to do with possible user error, but the bulk of issues we see are probably due to the fact that Sony uses PS3 owners and their systems as guinea pigs rather than rigorously testing the new firmware in house BEFORE releasing it.

haha guinea pigs :applause:

Wait,so if I'm getting this right, this update can screw you up in one of two ways:

- Fully screw over the PS3 by reading no firmware
- Won't let you swap HDDs

Correct?

Yes, Correct :D

way to go Sony......but we still love you ;)
never download the updates on the first day... if you can help it.
But if you want to get online to play a game when they decide to release the FW, you're pretty much SOL unless you wanna do that cockamamie workaround thing some people suggested during the FW update that removed the 'other OS' thing.

Either way, if this new FW borked people's systems from downloading new FW, then it's a bonus for me as long as it doesn't completely brick my system. As long as I can still get on PSN without having to download the new FW crap, I'm a happy camper.
haha guinea pigs :applause:
Does that make people with burnt PS3 games and modded systems "guinea pirates?" :p
Does that make people with burnt PS3 games and modded systems "guinea pirates?" :p
But the PS3 has never been hacked, thanks to 'zomg always pertinent' firmware updates, such as the one that removed the "Other OS" system for other PS3 users benefit(really because someone found an exploit in Linux to try n hack the PS3:roll:).

I think there could be an issue with my system pertaining to this update. I hope not, but I have to check more into it.

Sony just responded to the 3.41 hard drive upgrading issue with a notice on Twitter pointing to their updated blog posting:
Update: For those users who are replacing the PS3 hard disk drive: We have been aware of the symptoms with the system software update 3.41, released on July 27, and that it will cause the update to stop in some occasions while replacing the PlayStation 3 (PS3) Hard Disk Drive (HDD) if the PS3 system is installed with version 3.41.

To resolve these symptoms, we have released a new version of system software update 3.41 with a very minor change (the version number does not change) on August 2nd. If you are experiencing such symptoms when replacing the HDD of your PS3 system, we kindly ask you to use the latest data and try again. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused, and appreciate your understanding and continued support.

Don't think I'll be swapping my hard drive out before another update comes around, but I wonder if there's a way to get this update to replace my 3.41 firmware with the "new" 3.41 one, haha.

Cheapest, how much is your PS3's freedom worth to you? I can't post the link b/c I'm at work but a hacker is claiming that they have hacked it. The hack will allow you to download games into the hd and skip the required firmware updates. This can be yours for the small fee of $170! :). Sounds like all you have to do is plug in a USB key and it's good to go.

The firmware skipping I would like, but only if I still had the option to stop skipping them if something came along that was actually useful for me in one of them.

But loading up games to the HDD would suck up too much space.

Hey Cheapest, how much is your PS3's freedom worth to you?
PS3 Jailbreak?

Well for a mere $150 you may soon be able to jailbreak your PS3 via USB dongle to download games to the hd and pass on required firmware updates;)

I'm disappointed. As soon as I found out about the update, I came here expecting to find another rant from you-know-who about how it takes five hours to download and robs us of precious play time. Damn those evil bastards at Sony. :(

LMAO where is IATCG ? normally he is all over this thread when a new update comes out ? or did the new update now come out yet......?
Nothing, this is to stop PSJailbreak.
LOL, after reading an article about that last week I was wondering how long it would take Sony to fire out an update to stop it.

Considering I haven't even turned my PS3 on as of yet for the day I haven't seen how long this shitware is gonna take to download.

haha there you are :D

I've been feeling like shit the last week, back's killing me and my allergies have come back with a frickin' vengeance, so I haven't been playing the PS3 all that much.

So how come the thread isn't updated with the new info for this shiny new shitware yet?

oh cheapest.. you're so amusing I wish I played current games so I could add you to my list and we could play together and I would be amused.

The only games I've been playing alot as of late are the same ones I keep going back to(GTA: Episodes, Red Dead Redemption), so unless you had either of those I doubt we'd ever play together.

Alright. I guess I should download this garbageware before I go to pop on the PS3 to play a game for 10-11pm.

Man that sucks!

New for 3.42:
A security patch has been added to address security vulnerabilities in the system software.

They call it a security patch, huh? What they should call it is 'we blocked something we didn't want used on our system'.

That's another thing that bugs me bout the firmware updates though is that they don't really mention what's in them. They bring up that big license agreement that you have to accept(or be locked out of PSN for not accepting:roll:), but I've never seen them list what item(s) are included in the firmware updates.

If they did an itemized list of what's in each one, the size of each file and allowed you to uncheck optional shit(ooooo sparkles), then that would quell some of my distaste for their shitware.

But giving me alot of stuff that should be optional is what still keeps me aggravated about their system. If I don't want another 4 icons cluttering up my XMB, it should be MY choice.

The patch took me less than 3 minutes, and it keeps pirates out of the PS3 (for now). I don't mind the update. Hopefully the less Piracy on the PS3 the more support it will get from developers.

I already know two friends that own modded 360s that play burned games from the internet.

I'm not sure what to say to this. :whistle2:k

The more support a console has, the more rushed/buggy games we seem to get. I'd rather there be less support and more QUALITY games. But I'm getting a little sick of playing God Of War/GTA/Final Fantasy clone # 3693756903 already. But with MS/Sony both pushing towards motion controlled games with Move/Kinect now it just further proves to me that they're out of ideas and just trying to rush out their respective control systems to try and challenge the Wii's dominance of that market and make a quick buck.

If it was anything to do with innovation, we would've seen mention of motion control capabilities from the start from both and not just now as an overglorified(and EXPENSIVE) add-on.
Didn't Sony want to have motion based controls for the ps2 eye toy?
Yeah, I remember a display being set up at Best Buy when the Eye Toy first came out. I remember thinking only an idiot would play a game that way.
