Heckert might have stayed if he had used the picks from the Julio Jones trade better. One great player, a reach at QB (and probably the deal breaker), two fringe players, and the last used in a rather uneccesaary trade.
If they had drafted more above average players in the deal besides Phil Taylor (or if Weeden lit up the NFL like Luck did), Heckert might have stayed.
His major picks from his tenure:
Joe Haden - #1 CB
TJ Ward - Starting S
Shawn Lauvao - Starting RG
Phil Taylor - Starting DT
Jabaal Sheard - Starting RE
Greg Little - Starting WR
Buster Skrine - Nickel CB
Jason Pinkston - Starting LG
Trent Richardson - Starting RB
Brandon Weeden - Starting QB
Mitchell Schwartz - Starting RT
Josh Gordon - Starting WR
The Julio Jones trade turned into Phil Taylor, Greg Little, Brandon Weeden, and the last pick went to Minnesota in the Trent Richardson trade, so most of that worked out in their favor. Drafting guys like Billy Winn and John Hughes at DT paid off after the Phil Taylor injury as both guys played very well for rookies being thrust into the starting spotlight from the start and now play valuable relief roles in the DT rotation.
Undrafted rookies was another area of success with guys like LJ Fort, Craig Robertson, and Tashaun Gipson playing big roles on defense throughout the season due to injuries. Free agents like Frostee Rucker and Juqua Parker were successful opposite of Sheard on the defensive line, combining for 10 sacks this year. They had some notable failures at FA with Jayme Mitchell, Usama Young, Brandon Jackson, and Dmitri Patterson.
Off-season Browns talk:
The Browns do need to figure out what they're going to do at TE/FB, both outside LB positions, and the safety spot opposite TJ Ward. Benjamin Watson may not return, so they need to decide if Jordan Cameron will be the starting TE and who will start at FB between Alex Smith and Brad Smelley since Owen Marecic is on the way out quickly. LB will get the return of Chris Gocong to the starting lineup next season, but they have a lot of options to go with for the other OLB spot amongst the unremarkable Kaluka Maiava, the good/injured James Michael Johnson, or the consistent Craig Robertson. Safety was a weird spot for them with Usama Young frequently underperforming enough that guys like Eric Hagg and Tashaun Gipson got nods to start throughout 2012, so they need to cut the bigger contract and pick a young guy to start there consistently.
I definitely understand getting rid of Pat Shurmur since his playcalling this season has regressed and personnel decisions caused a lack of consistency in production on offense. The TE and WR positions were very spotty in his tenure because he could never figure out who to consistently feature at those positions in his offense, so it squandered the talents of Watson/Cameron/Moore/Smith on TE and Massaquoi/Little/Cribbs/Gordon/Norwood/Cooper/Benjamin at WR when nobody seemed to be the #1 and #2 guys at either position for more than a couple plays at a time. That doesn't help the quarterback or offense as a whole at all, but luckily Gordon and Little emerged as a reliable #1/#2 combo in the second half of 2012. That lets them sort out the supporting WR crew for next season, which is likely going to be Benjamin, Cooper, and Norwood with whatever WRs they may draft. Jordan Cameron will probably be the starting TE with the loser of the Smelley/Smith FB battle being the #2 TE.
The first pick will be an important one for the new regime to set the tone of what they want to do since they do not have a 2nd round pick. I'd use it to get a #2 CB if they can to play opposite of Joe Haden to replace Sheldon Brown and leave Buster Skrine in the nickel CB role that he's played very well at this year. I'm not sure of the crop of DBs that could fill that role at the current #6 spot that they have, but I'd say either that or a great pass rushing LB would be an ideal pick at that spot.
Starting =/= good. Taylor is a good pick, but Marecic only lasted a few years and Little was a reach and a bust. Only the Browns were going to take Weeden in the first round. They could have drafted him in the second or maybe even the third. And he is going to have to be as good as Luck/Wilson/RG3 next year if the Browns are going to have a shot. And while Trent Richardson is a great RB, Cleveland fell for Minnesota's buff and made an uncessary trade. The Browns desperately needed play makers and only got one (perhaps another if Josh Gordon continues to develop). As currently construed, they are a poor man's Minnesota except with an older QB and merely a very good RB.

Marecic's the only bust of that bunch. Greg Little's picked it up big time after a poor start due to the weird chaos at WR, where Shurmur had no clue who to play or focus on for the first half of the season until Josh Gordon broke out and Greg Little followed right after that, so they're the playmakers at WR. Trent Richardon got a ton of catches early on due to that WR chaos, but they stopped that once Gordon and Little became the focus of the passing game.
The Richardson thing at the end of the season was weird because Shurmur gave up on him as a passing option, which seemed to affect Weeden a lot since he didn't have that safe dump option when no obvious targets appeared right away. That lead to a lot of sacks and bad passes when he held the ball for so long.
you Green Bay! The one time in my life I wanted you to win and you crap out.
Please Bears FIRE LOVIE SMITH! He's been there way too long. Should've been fired after the Superbowl when he refused to see how shitty Rex Grossman was.
Does anyone really believe Romo is a good quarterback?
He has good games but has even more shittier games he's an alright QB. He's not as bad as Sanchise though
Does anyone really believe Romo is a good quarterback?
Jerry Jones, so don't expect them to get back to the glory hole days until Romo retires.
Romo isn't in the Brady or Manning class, but he is still a good QB. Though once Dez Bryant went out the Cowboys chances of winning went to nil.
Not a vikings fan but almost cried when I saw that AP didn't break the rushing record. 9 freaking yards!!!
You're not the only one.

This might've been the wake up call that he needed to see what many people have been saying for a long time. Then again, Al Davis was clueless until he died so maybe there's no hope for old rich dudes in the NFL.
I know the stats and the numbers show him to be above average by a good degree but the man's inability to produce when it is most vital that he do so is staggering.
I'm happy about it though; my favorite two teams sucked this year so I'm all about seeing history in the form of dominant rookies.
As a redskins fan that lives in packer country (obviously root for both teams since I can't watch 90% of the redskins games) I don't want Lovie Smith to get fired. He's the best thing to happen to the packers in awhile.
Reid, Shurmur, Lovie, Crennel and Bailey all out as head coaches. Tannenbaum is the fall guy for the NYJ front office and Gene Smith out as the Jags GM.
I'm really curious where Steven Jackson is going to be playing next year... I would love for him to stay a Ram, but I think he deserves a chance to play for a winning team. I'll have no hard feelings regardless of what he decides to do.
The Jimmy Haslam press conference announcing the firings of Shurmur and Heckert, which isn't a surprising move. They're going after a new coach first and GM after that, so it'll be interesting to see who they choose and how long they take to get both done.

This report from a week or two ago said Nick Saban has already been interviewing potential assistant coaches he would take to the Browns, and would be announced as the new Browns coach the day after the BCS title game.

New England would mean another 16-0 Patriots season. Maybe 19-0, considering their schedule.
Denver would mean 15-1 because they'd rest everyone the final week. No Super Bowl because of Peyton's curse.
The Giants perhaps because they need a RB that can stay healthy.
Beyond those 3, there's not really a Playoff Contender out there that doesn't have a RB.
Ken Wisenhunt as well.
I really like Ken Wisenhunt as a person-- he seems genuine, and gives a good interview for the weekly local show they have about the Cardinals. But it's clear there's been something wrong with the Cardinals for a while, so I'm happy they're trying to fix the issue.

As a Giants fan, I felt the same way about Andy Reid. I'm going to miss that guy.

If you need a RB that can stay healthy SJAX is not the answer. He pulls a hammy running untouched into the endzone! He's a beast but you can expect to get 1/2 to 2/3 of a season out of him tops.

If Kolb had stayed healthy all year, they would have been fighting for a wild card.

I find that extremely hard to believe. He's also a defensive-minded coach when they need one that will push the offense to new levels.
Also shocked Peoli wasn't shown the door at the same time as Romeo.
According to some tweets by people at a sports radio show who interviewed Clark Hunt, Pioli hasnt been brought up yet because he wants to find a head coach first that he feels would be best for the Chiefs in the long run. But I guess Pioli has let him down tremendously and he is making some changes that will put the new head coach on equal ground with the GM and the HC will report to Hunt directly, possibly to pursuade Pioli to leave.
Hunt says by February, he is hoping to have the GM figured out completely.
I don't understand firing Lovie Smith after going 10-6.
Sucks that he got cut with a record that would have been admirable in any other division but failing to get into the playoffs 5 of the past 6 years is a glaring black mark for him. Also the offense hasn't really clicked under him so it's sort of understandable that the owner would want a change of coach. However, to reiterate, really sucks to get fired after a good regular season.
How quickly we forget...the Bears started out 7-1 in the first half of the season. A 3-5 second half and choking away a playoff berth is what most will remember. Can't blame the Bears front office for being upset about that.

Very true. If anyone had said the most hotly contested division this year would be NFC North they would have been laughed at. What's particularly amusing is that every analyst picked it almost completely different (aside from Packers winning it) with the Vikings being picked to be dead last.

Yeah, but on the other hand, its not like they saw a resurgence of the Vikings coming either. If it hadn't been for the Vikings, the Bears would have made the playoffs.

That seems like sound logic. If it hadn't been for other good teams that they had to play, they would have made the playoffs. Lol...ok.
No shit, anyone thinking the Pats need to upgrade at RB, have you watched Ridley this season?
Yeah, they are all set. They also have Vereen and Woodhead whose skills compliment Ridley. They've developed one of the better running games in the league, certainly top 10. Upgrading there would be a total waste of resources.
All the Pats need to be concerned with is resigning Welker or otherwise replacing his production and then continuing to work on the secondary (keeping Talib would be a huge boost there).
