The NFL 2012-13 Season Thread - Super Bowl XLVII is the Harbaugh Bowl!

Ravens and 49ers. I think the Ravens know how to play the Patriots. The 49ers are my team so there's that and the fact that Atlanta's DBs can't tackle.

It'll be nice to be at the bar and having people cheer with me for the Ravens. Well not so much cheer for the Ravens as much as it is cheering against Tom Brady. The amount of hate he riles up in Indianapolis is hilarious. I'm really hoping for a Harbaugh Bowl. I just wish it wouldve happened last year.

I'm indifferent to the Patriots. I used to really hate them but there's turning out to be much more despicable teams out there these days. The Saints, for one.

Also, even though I don't even like the guy, Belichick is a damn amazing coach and certainly one of the biggest keys to their success.

If you're gonna cheer for the 49ers though; they're really just the 90s version of the Patriots. Despite their strong season the only real "underdogs" left in the playoffs are the Falcons.

As a 49er fan, the fact everyone sees that game as a cakewalk scares the shit out of me. This is the NFL and usually that means they will lose since everyone is all over them.

I don't know... I'm so sick of the Patriots which is I'm sure how every baseball fan feels about the Yankees... I get it now. I do respect what they have been able to accomplish over such a long period of time (even though I still feel like they are handed the division every single year due to total incompetence of the other 3 teams).

Brady is the only player from the 2001 team still left and I think maybe Wilfork and one or 2 other guys are all that's left from 2004. So they have been able to field an extremely competitive team for over a decade in a league where you are lucky to get 2 or 3 "peak" years from any given team. Belichick is a guy who always seems to be one or two steps ahead of the rest of the league. Watch, in 2015 when every single team is starting 2 gigantic TEs the Pats will be killing you in some other way. Since I'm not a fan I'm probably just bored at this point.

I really dislike the Ravens though - both Harbaugh brothers seems like they are gigantic assholes in real life and they still employ a dude who probably stabbed and killed 2 people and everyone seems to be giving him a lifetime pass because he found Jesus or something. I also think I hate them from when they beat the Giants in 2000. I like Ray Rice and Torrey Smith though - they are beastly.

I'm indifferent against the Patriots. I know when to root for them (against teams like the Texans, being a Cowboy fan and all) and against them (against Baltimore, because Ray Lewis is my dude and one of the best linebackers of all time). And for that reason I think Baltimore will win, and I will pick another "upset" with the Falcons over the 49ers. Matty Black Ice will have a huge game. As will Julio Jones.
No he was lucky the Bears QB was Rex Grossman. If Orton starts that game & Hester still returns the opening kick for TD, Bears win.
I thought I was the only person in the world wondering why they yanked Orton that season after he got the job done the rest of the year.

Cheers to you good sir.

2004 was Wilfork's rookie season. Still my favorite Patriots draft pick ever (at the time) since it was amazing he slipped all the way to 21st. Deion Branch is the only other current Patriot who was there in 2004, in fact he was the MVP of the game. He left and came back of course, but he was also on the 2003 squad. There are only a few guys from that team who are still in the league period (Ben Watson, Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Dan Koppen, Asante Samuel and of course Vinatieri are the only ones I'm aware of) which goes to show how long ago it was in football terms.

Wilfork was a nice pick but I think you'd be happier with Brady in the millionth round with the billionth pick. That one worked out.

That's why I had "at the time" in parentheses. :D

Brady is probably the best draft pick ever, but any Patriots fan who tells you that they thought after 2000 that they'd just drafted one of the best QBs of all time in the 6th round is lying.

Even after the 2001 Super Bowl there was a not insignificant number of Pats fans who wanted to give the job back to Bledsoe when he was healthy.

I'm pretty indifferent toward the Patriots as well. Hated them for a good while after the tuck rule crap knocked the Raiders out years back. But otherwise don't mind them.

I despise the Ravens, so will be pulling for the Pats in that one.

Otherside I'm pretty indifferent on. I live in Atlanta, but I'm a Raiders fan--don't mind the Falcons though.. 49ers were my preseason pick to win it all so I wouldn't mind seeing that pan out either--and I like Kaepernick. Was fun to watch in college, glad he's having success in the NFL.

Dumb rule, but definitely called correctly. Interestingly, there was what looked like a possible "tuck rule" play in the 3rd quarter of the Broncos-Ravens game but they kept it a fumble.

Should have never come into play Woodson should have been flagged for the hit to the head he gave Brady

Yea thats out of nowhere, he already turned down the job and said he was returning to Oregon sometime last week.....Maybe we misunderstood Chip Kelley, He probably meant I am returning to Oregon.....to pack up my stuff and move to Philly?
He did. Puzzling situation.
Actually, I don't think Chip Kelly himself technically did. There were always "Sources say..." and then the AD for Oregon or someone confirmed he was coming back, but never Chip Kelly himself. He doesnt talk much to the media, anyway.

Rumor had it he was going to give it one more shot at the BCS title or hold out for a job more on the east coast. (Where he's from)

Well here is another story.....Remember Manti Te'o, ND player, well right before the Heisman race was to begin, It looks like either Manti is extremely gulable or it was an elaborate scheme to get Heisman trophy support. He did do a media blitz and emotional interview.

"Notre Dame's Manti Te'o, the stories said, played this season under a terrible burden. A Mormon linebacker who led his Catholic school's football program back to glory, Te'o was whipsawed between personal tragedies along the way. In the span of six hours in September, as Sports Illustrated told it, Te'o learned first of the death of his grandmother, Annette Santiago, and then of the death of his girlfriend, Lennay Kekua."

Manti Te'o did lose his grandmother this past fall. Annette Santiago died on Sept. 11, 2012, at the age of 72, according to Social Security Administration records in Nexis. But there is no SSA record there of the death of Lennay Marie Kekua, that day or any other. Her passing, recounted so many times in the national media, produces no obituary or funeral announcement in Nexis, and no mention in the Stanford student newspaper.
Nor is there any report of a severe auto accident involving a Lennay Kekua. Background checks turn up nothing. The Stanford registrar's office has no record that a Lennay Kekua ever enrolled. There is no record of her birth in the news. Outside of a few Twitter and Instagram accounts, there's no online evidence that Lennay Kekua ever existed.
The photographs identified as Kekua—in online tributes and on TV news reports—are pictures from the social-media accounts of a 22-year-old California woman who is not named Lennay Kekua. She is not a Stanford graduate; she has not been in a severe car accident; and she does not have leukemia. And she has never met Manti Te'o.

Girlfriend never exist, story was a hoax and elaborate scheme, Manti is saying he was tricked and he was having a online relationship.

Its breaking news on ESPN

I just read the Deadspin article. Wow, that is one of the most bizarre sports stories I can remember. Got to think he's going to tumble in the draft at this point.
It's obvious he found out what the school's sanctions were going to be.
Ahh, pulled the Ol' Pete Carroll did he... ;)

That was my first thought as well. It would explain the sudden change of heart.

EDIT:

The whole Manti Te'o breaking news is nuts!
The whole thing is so bizarre. It's almost surreal that the main story on Sportscenter is about an imaginary girlfriend.
Sportscenter shouldnt even be giving this attention. I want sports news not some college kid's make-believe stories.

My main thought when SportsCenter broke the story "Manti Te'o and his girlfriend...that did not exist, well be back with the story" My mind was blown, His excuse is it was an online relationship, and he was embarrased, but he mentioned in several interviews leading up to Heisman trophy, he spoke of him and his girlfriend physically hanging out togother, but now he is saying he is a victim of a hoax....but yet he was the only one who benefited from this elaborate hoax.

Kid needs to work on better lies, especially in this day and age. Dead anything is very bad as it's super easy to track that down.

Obviously the best choice is to not do that stupid shit, but if you are, do a better job.

I for one am glad they are making this story front and center to let America know the same guy who everyone felt sorry for, was just a scheme for publicity to his benefit. It makes me sick that he used "Leukemia" to get votes, Leukemia is such a tragic disease that takes thousands of young helpless childrens lives each year.

If this is all true, and he was behind this hoax the whole time, I really hope the NFL teams take this into consideration during the draft, because it truly shows his twisted character.

To quote one NFL scout "This won't effect his draft stock at all, we draft guys who have robbed banks."

I don't believe the whole story that he was hoaxed. Nothing adds up.

That scout is an idiot. Of course it will impact his draft stock. Dez Bryant lied about going out to dinner with Deion Sanders and it caused him to drop to 22.

His stock will take a hit but nothing too crazy. Looking forward to Mel going "This is a steal at pick xx. Some pros of Teo are his tackling ability. A con of this pick is that he likes to pretend he has a girlfriend"

LOL. I'll admit I haven't read any of the news stories relating to this but I am surprised that this wasn't discovered earlier....

I mean his relative (mom or grandmother?) actually did pass away in September (?) and IIRC his fake girlfriend died shortly thereafter.

How it wasn't discovered that he was lying then I have no idea....

Well, many people wouldn't think that a star player in college football would pretend to have a long distant relationship.

He would look better if he claimed to be the mastermind behind the hoax in order to raise his profile for the Heisman. That's a terrible thing to do but perfectly understandable. The alternative... is just embarrassing.

In the old draft system he would have lost a ton of money. But in the new system he will lose less. He was already slotted mid-first round after his horrible end of the season, so it will likely drop him to Round 2.

Then again, players' stock tends to skyrocket up and down at the Combine, so it is way too early right now.

Worst case scenario: He ends up as this year's Burfict.

I doubt it will happen but I really want to see the falcons take it all since my team is out. I think Tony Gonzo really deserves it after being stuck on the chiefs all those years

When he brought it into his Heisman campaign, it became sports -- and public -- news.

Grandmother. His "girlfriend" supposedly died within hours. Same day, I think.

Chiefs weren't always so terrible. They were pretty potent with Trent Green and Priest Holmes for a few years. Gonzo saw playoffs from the sidelines 3 times while with the Chiefs.

Seems like a good guy though... totally indifferent to all final four teams.

I guess that one of the coaching rumors for the Browns had to come true at some point this off-season, so the Browns announced some of the new and returning staff members:

Norv Turner - OC
Scott Turner - WR Coach
Brad Roll - Strength & Conditioning Coach
Mike Sullivan - OL Coach #2
George Warhop - OL Coach #1
Chris Tabor - ST Coach

Warhop and Tabor are the returning coaches, though it's weird that they hired a second OL Coach who isn't an assistant. Sullivan and Warhop are both OL coaches with Warhop taking the lead between the two of them.

It'll be interesting to see what Norv Turner will bring to the offense now that he doesn't have to manage the game and can focus on the offense.

Awww, poor Brad Childress wasn't invited back. Good riddance and screw that guy for fucking over the Vikings not only while he was there but also into the future as well.

How can you be mad for a guy that traded a third round pick and scored a future seventh round pick and Randy Mo-- oh right.

Yeah, there's that and the fact that drafting Joe Webb as a WR but turning him into a QB was Childress's pet project as well, which after watching the wild card game we all see was a fan-fucking-tastic idea...
rotf wtf Webb was a wr?

He apparently split his time in college between QB and WR but clearly didn't excel in either role.
