The Official E-Bay Scalping Thread
What?? I'm not shipping a thing until I have cash in hand. This means going to the bank and withdrawing whatever I sell the PS3 for from my separate bank account set up specifically for Paypal transactions. I'm not going to scam anyone, I'm going to take tons of pictures of everything and if I get a signature then the buyer has accepted the goods and that is that.
When I went to transfer my PayPal balance to my checking account, PayPal said it takes 3-4 days for processing. Do you intend to wait until the transfer is completed before you mail?

If that's the case then yes. If it costs me a few dollars because people won't want to wait so be it but I do plan on disclosing this in the auction and I will ship FedEx for next day delivery once the money is in hand.

How much is Fedex next day delivery? I just used their calculator - using 15 lbs, decared value of $2000 and box dimensions of 2ftx2ftx2ft and overnight was $292.

What? Um, no thanks then. I ship boxes of crap from work all the time that weigh a lot more than that... I wonder if the costs are the same or if we get a discount or something...

Does anyone know if it will be possible to list on half.com on launch day? Also, are there more security risks listing there instead of Ebay?
The only problem with Money Orders is that people lie and say they have sent them but you never receive them. Has happened to me more than once. This especially happens if they bid up an auction high, then see that they could have gotten the item for less. Thats why I require immediate payment through paypal :bomb:
This was another worry that I had about bank checks or money orders. My first thought was worrying that it would look like a red flag to potential buyers, especially considering I have no feedback as a seller (I think I have around 30, all positive, as a buyer) I mean, I know I'm not going to scam them or ship them a box of rocks, but I guess if I were on the other end of this, I'd much rather pay in a way that gives me some recourse if I get screwed.

So is the general consesus among people who have sold a lot on ebay that money orders are a bad plan for selling PS3s on ebay, and Paypal, for all it's possible pitfalls, is the only way to go?
What? Um, no thanks then. I ship boxes of crap from work all the time that weigh a lot more than that... I wonder if the costs are the same or if we get a discount or something...
First time I've ever gone to the Fedex web site to check on fees, so I could have done something wrong. I also chose "Residential Delivery". I also assumed shipping it across the country (from NJ to CA). I think I'm going to go with USPS.

I haven't really been following the ebay sales of these things, but I just looked and I think sellers may end up being disappointed. It looks like the current set of preorders (ending now - Weds evening) are going for $1000-$1200. Still a profit, to be sure, but not the "Two Grand" I heard some line sitter at the Rockville, MD claim he was going to get for his 3 days of camping out :D.

It will only get worse (for sellers) when ebay gets flooded with them. On the flip side, there will be many people who expect to get this Friday who will be sorely disappointed (with Sony cutting the allocation even further) so there may be many more buyers then too.

I just have no idea how this is going to play out, and I've been selling stuff on ebay for years (though never such a high-priced or hot item). I planned on selling mine, but I may wait a week or two to let the initial glut disappear. Even if I sell it for $600 I'll still be making a profit (though I would have just kept it for that price) as I used trade-in credit to buy it. My hope was to make double, then pick up a post-launch (and hopefully bug-fixed) PS3 at Costco using the profit from this sale. So my expectations are low ($1200) and I can go much lower due to my actual cost for the system being around $300. Hopefully I will be pleasantly surprised though, and get a high bid, an honest buyer, and hassle-free shipping .

Since we're getting closer to launch, are there any more ideas on when's the perfect time to sell? Right away, a week or so later, or closer to Christmas? Right now I'm thinking that people who waited until the last minute and are buying one right before Christmas would be likely to pay the most and be a more reliable buyer.

Judging from last year's Xbox 360 launch, I think the safest best is to put up the auction on Friday. You might make a bit more closer to Christmas depending on shipping schedules, but Friday should be pretty much a guaranteed payday.
How much is Fedex next day delivery? I just used their calculator - using 15 lbs, decared value of $2000 and box dimensions of 2ftx2ftx2ft and overnight was $292.
That costs seems a little high. FedEX also takes in account the dimentions of packages, once you go over a certain limit, the cost of shipping rises. I don't think the PS3 will require a box that big.

Also I think the declared value should only be what you paid for the product (ie $600 + tax), FedEX's liability is only for the replacement cost of the item, not the inflated ebay price. You pay extra for any declared value over $100 so I would not waste money declaring anything over the actual retail price.

You also get a 15% discount on Express shipments if you use the website to process the shipment and its free to sign up for an account.

It should only cost about $80 to ship a PS3 using standard FedEX overnight.

why is it that i posted my ps3 on ebay and when i try to do a search for it...it doesn't appear on any search pages? it's been up for 2 hours now yet, i'm the only one who has looked at it...? WTF?! somebody help me out please!

not sure where but I read somewhere that sony expects to ship another 400,000 consoles by the end of 2006, so I would sell this the day you get it as more will be available come christmas time.

*edit*

I think I read that in my newest EGM.

Sometimes things don't show up for a while - but of course, make sure you spelled everything correctly just to be safe :D.

As for no one else looking at it - there are SO MANY PS3 auctions up right now that you most likely won't get many looks until the last couple of hours (so don't panic if it stays low until near the end too).

One of the ones I was watching earlier was only at $900 (with free shipping) with 30 minutes left but it got another bid with about 10 minutes left that lifted it to $1100. I didn't watch it after that but it is likely it went up even more.

Still, like I said, most were ending around $1200-$1300 max, with a few outliers.

I intend to start mine at 99 cents, so I will make sure I don't look for the first 1/2 of the time because it will probably be a bit scary for a while :D. But unlike the early days of ebay, when the site would go down for several hours at a time very frequently and your auctions would end with some ridiculously low bid as a result, it should be fairly safe to do so now.

Sony says a lot of things. Kind of like how they expected to ship a million before launch, then it was no Europe launch, then it was 400,00 for NA and 100,000 for JP, now it's 200,000 for NA and 88,000 for Japan.

Remember, that specific EGM was printed and mailed long before the new allocation cuts.

My ebay auction ended at over $2,550 and the guy paid within an hour. Freaking unbelieveable that you can make that kind of money on a stupid game console which you'll be able to pick up in 6 months for list price.

Assuming my confirmed and reserved PS3 at GameStop doesn't disappear between now and Friday, I'm a happy man.

Question:

If you have a buyer that receives the ps3 and complains that it is glitching, what should you say to them? What kind of disclaimer should you put in your auction/BIN sale? Obviously, you should put "All sales are final, no refunds allowed", but what else could you say?

Keep in mind, that magazine was written and sent to press well before the PS3 launch shipment numbers were cut at least 40% this week.

you could always mention that the item is covered by manufacturer's warranty - that should cover things.

Congrats dude! Hope shit goes well for you.

I'll be happy with mine going over $1500, $2000 would be  .

io,

i am not sure what you are looking at, but i have some ps3 20GB preorders on my watch list(9 to be exact). all for american versions to ship nov 17. they all ended today and range in price from 1125.00 up to 2125.00. average around $1500 for the 20 gig version !!! are you sure you are not looking at any of the japanese models?

lol..

I called gamestop yesterday and they said I wouldn't be able to get a preorder since I'm number 9 and they are only getting 8.

Gamestop called earlier today around 3pm and told me that I had a preorder available to pick up on Friday.

I get all excited and I'm shaky throughout the rest of the day.

Just now, I read through this entire thread. Then I wrote out how I'm going to make my eBay BIN description and settings.

Then I checked my phone and noticed that Gamestop called. They left a voice mail, and I check it to hear the store manager's message that they made a mistake and that I'd have to wait until next month.

Now I'm just sad. At least I don't have to deal with picking the ps3, worrying about being scammed, and any other pressure that I felt for the past 6 hours.

What a day.

ya if mine goes over $2000 i will be FRIKIN AMAZED! and i will honestly throw that money in the bank and hold on to it!

and im selling the 60 GB ps3 too...so im REALLY hoping...though right now its weird cuz the damn thing has been on ebay for about 6 hours now and it has STILL not been posted on the searches...frikin ebay...

and i wonder if EB is still gonna honor my pre-order? i was 3rd in line...tho im not sure if either of the EB employees decided to be assholes and order one for themselves...gah

I just looked again at completed ones - all the ones I was looking at must have bumped up in the very last minutes because most are around $1500 now. Still, to expect $2000 is a bit too much (as a guy interviewed for TV at one of the Best Buy lines said he would get for it).

Here are a few "bad" ones though (these are all US or Canada preorders shipping on the 17th):

$1054 for 60 GB with free shipping:

Of course, there are many more that ended around $1500-$1600 it seems... The first one there really got screwed though compared to the rest.

Then there's the flip side.

This one:

got $2127 from a fairly low feedback seller. I'm not sure what he means by offering "Buyer Protection".

Here's another high one from a low feedback seller, this one $2550!

One thing I'm learning from these auctions - don't bother bundling games and especially don't bother with free shipping. It doesn't seem to help with higher bids. It is pretty insane that the market is that inefficient that some get $1100 while others end $1000 or more higher! Just luck I guess...
Question - should I sell mine launch weekend or wait till December? Any suggestions?
Honestly, we have no idea - we all keep asking the same question.

i say sell now, with all the publicity it's getting right now, prices are gonna be pretty stinkin' high right now, better strike while the iron is hot

Wow. The low end sales are getting $1,200! That's all I really want to sell it for (enough to cover the cost of the system in 6 months). I'm going to do a $2,000 BIN and see what happens. You never know!

What do you plan on starting the sale at? BIN are never useful if they are coupled with a low starting price.

ya selling it now would DEFINITELY be the best idea...but i think people are going to be A LOT more insane when someone finds out that their friend got a PS3 and so they're gonna go beg to mommy and daddy to buy them a PS3 no matter what the cost...and hopefully by monday people are going to literally go frikin INSANE with buying PS3 for $2000+....wishful thinking here....

SWEET!!!! AND I JUST GOT MY FIRST BID!!!! at $24.99 with 4 days and 8 hours left to go :whistle2:D

I'm pretty sure that at the end of that clip they said the target would only be getting 8 units.

5 units x $1400 proftit = $7000

50 homeless guys x $100 each = $5000

So those douchebags will be making around $2000 minus all the hastle and U-haul costs. They would have made out better if they waited in line themselves.

OK so one PS3 is closing soon for $2550!!!!!!!!!! EDIT - sold for $2650 with 2 games and extra controller.

EDIT2: Another just sold for $3000 with nothing else.
wow, that is terrible.
Man, that's messed up. Funny thing is the store only had 8 units in-stock.

Ebay is hitting 3000+ consistently lately, WITH reliable bidders. I saw one for 3,500 with a bidder w/ hundreds of feedback. This is the real deal people. People are willing to pay anything.

Thank god I got my preorder in, and I"ll have it at midnight from my EB! :)
Do you have to have 50+ feedback to sell a PS3 at all, or just before they launch?
Just before launch. Once the item is in hand you can sell it without meeting their requirements.

My EB will not be open at midnight, although the clerk will be coming it early ~9:30 AM for the PS3 Pre-order folks.

I think I'm going to ship mine via USPS Priority Mail, Registered Mail with Signature Confirmation with an insured value of $2000 (or whatever the final bid is). It appears (based upon the USPS Postage Calculator) for larger insurance $, Registered Mail is cheaper than just buying Insurance.

I hope you sold yours already then. When theres 30-50 times the amount that are on there now I can't say I see the profit potential being nearly as good. Good luck though, I wish I would've been able to get a preorder.

My gamestop informed me i would be getting my preorder, so ill be there tomorrow to pick it up before putting it on ebay. I plan to take as many pictures as possible then putting it on ebay.

I have my hopes up right now so hopefully everything goes good

I was watching this one too. this will be a very common thing starting tomorrow. I accidentily came across some forum doing a google search and there was a whole plan in place with a ton of people who are going to try to do this with every auction they can. I wish I could find it again because they were pretty funny talking about it.
