The Official Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn Thread - 11/5/07 - NP: 9.5; IGN: 8.0; 1up: 9.0
I can't think of a reason why I wouldn't buy this game on day 1, so I'll buy it on day 1.
I think I'll put this off for a Christmas present... I could buy it Day 1, but I won't have the time to devote to it this holiday season, so there's no real rush.

Though the quick save addition should make it a little easier to get through on a shitty gaming schedule.

Nintendo's insistence on keeping game prices at $50 makes it pretty easy for me to decide. I'm sure as hell not waiting for a price drop, and I want this game badly.

Though realistically, I'll be playing through Mario Galaxy first.

NP review summary once again courtesy of GAF's sk3tch:

- Controls so simple that a monkey could navigate it (it's the Wii remote sideways, like a NES controller)
- Interface is elegant and simple.
- Strategy and emotional bonding with the characters is intense. Will be sad when you lose them.
- Doesn't go deep into plot details but states there are twists, heartaches, betrayals, and enough political commentary to makt he '08 prez campaign look like a run for class president.
- If you are not familiar with Fire Emblem but enjoy Advance Wars / Final Fantasy Tactics / Ogre Battle - you'll dig it.
- If you like using your noggin and dramatic plots - you'll dig it, too.
- If you're already an Emblem fan, prepare to be wowed.
- Excellent production values; 30 hour campaign.
Sounds 9.5-worthy to me.
Attn: Everyone.

I have taken control of my nation's vast stockpile of nuclear, chemical, biological, and chemilogiclear weapons. I lack any sort of means to actually deliver these weapons anywhere, but my neighbour Gord said he totally knew a guy who could hook me up. If you do not buy this game, I will fire one missile an hour every hour until this game reaches one million sales. Targets will be determined by lowest rate of copies of FE10 per capita. Scientists predict that, given the sheer strength of Canada's nuclear arsenal, the planet itself will be damaged irreversibly by the end of the first day.

This is my threat.

DuGalle out.
*Forwards post to Putin.*
Goodbye, Brooklyn, NY.
??? That line confused me....Ackkk, I'm confused. What do you mean by that The Crotch?

The only thing that might keep me from buying on Day 1 is my desire to play through FE 9 again....to refresh my memory of the characters + use a better 'Epilogue' than the one I currently have.

(Selective use of bonus EXP = lots of 20/20 characters!)

This is a day 1 purchase for me (have it pre-ordered at DeepDiscount for $39). I really, really liked PoR, and I'm glad to hear this one won't disappoint. FE:RD plus Super Mario Galaxy and Trauma Center (and Zack and Wiki eventually) make me a very happy Wii owner, despite Brawl's delay.

I fucking wimped out and watched the opening movie, although I DID NOT WANT TO.

Day 1. Period.

OP: The First Level movie link is broken.
Be sure to show your support by getting a Civil War signature and/or threatening every person you meet with a violent death if they don't buy Fire Emblem!
The threatening thing dosen't work as good in real life as it does on the web:) .

I've never played any Fire Emblems. Enlighten me.

I fill like it's my civic duty to support any RPG on the Wii (especially strategy RPGs). I haven't actually played a RPG since... well, I believe Suikoden V was the last one I bought. I may check my local GameStops to see if I can pick up a used copy of PoR cheap to see if I like it. Is there any other "comparable" series to Fire Emblem that might give me an idea of what to expect?

The only Fire Emblem i've ever played is PoR.. but it's a sweet game.

Story is very cliche/straightforward but it's presentation is just awesome. I love having cut-scenes that tells what the villains are up to on a regular basis. Makes killing them in the end rather sweet.

Also, it's VERY unforgiving. On easy mode, I had to restart a ton. I only lost one person the whole way through, it was a healer that always died in one hit. It was such a hard mission to pass to begin with that I didn't give a shit if someone died.

The battle system is just like any other strat RPG, except it goes a different screen when you attack someone and it's like a mini game almost.

Unfortunately, Call of Duty 4 is coming out the same day but I'll get to this asap.

After watching the game intro on the first post, I'm convinced to pre-order Fire Emblem from GS/EB. The video brought back memories of playing FE on my GBASP and all the great time I had with it.

Although, picking up FE next week means that I can't pick up Disgaea, Hellgate, Trauma Center, and RE:UC within the next couple of weeks.

Today's the day of longer posts from me, I guess...

I have to send my fucking Wii in for repairs, otherwise I might not partake in that Secret Santa badassery we have planned... However, despite that, I rented Path of Radiance from Blockbuster last night, because I thought "why not?"

You know, I really dislike these Japanese RPGs where you walk around fighting things like this. The reasons are plentiful - I am usually annoyed by the generic anime art (never liked that style, it's ugly to me), and the gameplay becomes a variation of a really boring puzzle game, where you basically have to figure out particular moves to not die, and if you know the strategy - you come out completely on top without as much of a scratch.

Anyone surprised by this should be reminded that I haven't played games of that type since original UFO (X-COM in the States) games, and then there were a few titles for PC which were bad. The last game in this genre that I treid (last night notwithstanding) was something called Bravery Hearts or some shit like that for PS1 - I would look it up, but I don't want to bother.

Regardless, here are my initial impressions from playing Fire Emblem for an hour:
 • I want Radiant Dawn pretty bad

Considering PoR can be had for like... $10, yes you should be buying it.

It gets MUCH harder as you go, even moreso when you decide you don't want your characters to die and replay until it happens. The basic combat mechanics remain the same outside of a few props you'll encounter, but you'll gain different types of units as you go that keep things fresh.

I'd say pickup and play fire emblem on the cheap. It's a good game.
Also, I believe you can import your characters into radiant.

Not sure about this-anyone care to discuss or how it will impact gameplay?
Not 100% sure what you want, but...
I wanted you to go apeshit over Fire Emblem. It's one thing to read professional reviews, but it's something totally different to speak with a self proclaimed zealot. In fact, your little entry made me so happy, that I might even get Radiant Dawn without a Wii in the house. Just for you.

The Fog of War comment filled me with glee.

I'll play PoR some more tonight, and I will probably report here tomorrow. As long as it's not RD's time, I can throw a few good words all up ins for the series.

Anybody know a place that would likely have the prior Fire Emblem on Gamecube? I figured it might be best to buy it as well and play it first, but Radiant Dawn is close to release..
How much is it suppose to be, it shows "backordered" where price should be?
Currently, they are selling them for $16.99

Meh, went looking for it today but didn't see it at my closest GameStop. I think I'll go to GameStop haven tomorrow (with 3 stores in no less than a 1/2 mile radius) to see if I can find it at any of those.

Now I do know that most of their used games are ripoffs, but I noticed Paper Mario: 1000 Year Door was $24.99 USED. C'mon, I can get it new at Best Buy for $19.99! Idiots...

Debating preordering the guide at Amazon... it would come out to just under $13. Since penny guides are dying quickly, not a terrible deal. Especially considering I already preordered the Mario Galaxy CE guide for $19, and that won't ever be used.

Played Path of Radiance yesterday...

I'm playing it on HARD and I got to the first level where a character died... I restarted, of course, but then I mis-managed my troops, and ANOTHER one died. So I had to restart again, but I had shit to do, so I stopped.

Man, it's really exceptionally addictive. In the best way, too.

Never played a Fire Emblem game. Is it more strategy RPG or strategy?

Or a better question, should I play the GBA games or just wait till I can play this?

Would it help had I hyphenated "strategy RPG" to look more like "strategy-RPG" or does it still not make sense? Nevermind. I'm on the internet. I'll just go read about it.

Well for comparative purposes I'd use Advance Wars (So Civilization is also apt) as my "strategy" game. No role-playing elements to speak of.

But did a quick read through and found out Fire Emblem basically invented Strategy-RPG or tactical RPG or whatever. I think I'll give one a try.

Unless you have dozens of hours free, start with PoR or RD. I played the first GBA game after PoR, and it wasn't quite the same.

Bozon put together a train-wreck of a review.

Aside from some FMV work, there’s nothing here above what was done on GBA or DS. Basic menus, tons of text, simple backdrops, and not much more than some portrait art to tell the story.

Graphics: 6
16:9 was included for the USA release, and 480p is a nice touch – for a game that is identical to GameCube in almost every way. Battle animations are improved a bit though.

Sound: 7.5
No orchestration, very little VO, and a virtually unchanged experience from Cube’s effort. The music is still impressive, but it’s all midi.

Gameplay: 8
No Wii functionality, but really no need. It’s a classic design, and it plays as such. It's a great tactical experience, still smooth and quick, and still entertaining.

Lasting Appeal: 8
Well over 50 hours, random stat evolution during level ups, GCN data transfer, but no online or multiplayer elements to be had.
It's loading like shit for me - what's the "train-wreck"?
The comments I posted should give you the gist. But apparently Fire Emblem lacks Mii integration. Boo IntSys!

this is why i avoid ign like the plague, FE is probably the BEST strategy-rpg game i've played, the story, music, and gameplay are top notch in my books

The complaint isn't that unjustified. It's basically a Gamecube game in disguise. Considering the individual scores (which are rather low for the complaints), an 8 seems awfully high in comparison (but is probably about right).

Well, I finally picked up Fire Emblem: POR yesterday and am on chapter 16. Interestingly enough, one GameStop had the disc only, and another had the case only. I had to take the case from one GameStop to another, go figure.

I'm enjoying it thus far, and it's different. Although, there are a few things that bug me. Such as not knowing I could skip dialogs (and doing it by accident) and the lack of customization so far. I still like it enough that I think I'll pick up Radiant Dawn sometime, just not at launch. I will probably wait until there's some lull in the lineup (aka. post-Brawl) until I pick it up.
It's not that they're unjustified, it's that they aren't really relevant.
I'm beginning to wonder why reviewers can't review a game based purely on it's own merit. It seems like I'm seeing more and more reviews where they'll throw something random in like, "It's not Halo 3, -3 points." The things I'm looking for in a review are the entertainment/enjoyment value of the game, as long as it's something new.

As far as non-wiimote functionality is concerned, does every game HAVE to use the wiimote just because it exists? If there's no valid reason for the wiimote to be used, there should be no reason to hold it against a game for that reason. Just because you can, doesn't mean that you should.

Weapon customization occurs as soon as you get the travelling merchants, and the options for that slowly increase over the course of the game. You should start accumulating specialized skills to give to each character soon (always attacks first, stun attack, etc.) to spice things up. Sadly, there are no branching promotion paths for any characters save for the Social Knights in PoR. This has been changed for Radiant Dawn.

I just wasn't sure if more customization that occurred later, and I haven't just reached it. I do like it for the fact that it's different in many ways than other SRPGs that I've played and not just a basic clone.

Presentation: 4 out 10??? Because the game is simplistic and elegant, as opposed to having menus that cover shit up?

I'm sure they've praised Super Mario Galaxy for keeping shit simple.... What the fuck do they want other than portraits?

fuck those numbers. "Very little VO" = "less money wasted on stupid shit that MC gets to skip." Sorry, but you need the chops of Schafer, Grossman, or Gilbert to make me want to listen to what your characters have to say. If you're writing a text-heavy game (read: if you're writing your average RPG) then please don't hire actors. It wastes a huge production expense and adds tons of pain to people like me, who might still be angry at Siegfried from Final Fantasy X - not for being Hard (TRIO OF 9999 BITCH) but for fuckING TALKING SO GOD DAMN MUCH.

Anyway, everything they said - MarioColbert gives a thumb up. Minimal Presentation? FTW. No bullshit when it comes to controls? Hell yes. No Voice Acting? Good, that's the weakest link in PoR so far. All "MIDI"? Well, it's not actually all "midi" because they don't know what the hell MIDI is, but I'll let that one slide because we might argue that "we all know what they are talking about." Can't really say that I'm upset. PoR sounds good, but the music is cliche. It makes me sleep better at night, knowing that an orchestra didn't have to spend 4 weeks in the studio recording stupid shit like "you lose" jingle.

Wow, I'm such a dickpenis.

From what I remember they said the samethin with PoR and you could beat it in over 20, so I wouldnt count on 50 hours.
From what I remember they said the samethin with PoR and you could beat it in over 20, so I wouldnt count on 50 hours.
they probably put that in to account for those who reset everytime a char dies

Today is the 5th!
Does anyone happen to know when Blockbuster is getting this game, if at all? I know some of you are renters!
