The official N-Gage thread

Here's an easy how to for Smartmovie conversions.

Smartmovie

First you are going to need a copy of smartmovie, how you obtain this is completely up to you
if like me you want to pay for this amazing application it will set you back $19.98 (U.S, convert this at will)
It can be purchased from here Lonely Cat Games

Load up smartmovie

Click Open and search for the movie/clip etc you want to convert, the mainly accepted types of file
are .avi, .mpg, .mpeg, .m1s, .dat and finally .wmv

Once your desired file has been found double click it and the screen should now open up back to the previous screen saw when first opened except this time there is a movie loaded in the little window.
The top left information in blue shows you roughly how large the file is going to be with the following settings;

Video Settings
LandScape
Reduce Frames: Deactivated
Codec: Xvid Encoder
Bitrate: 96 kbps

Audio Settings
Enable - Activated
Force Mono - Activated
Frecuency: 16000 Hz
Bitrate: 24 kbps
Volume Boost: 250

Before converting it would be handy to decide where your finished product is going to end up, click 'options' then 'preferences' and select the directory where you want your file to be delivered.

These are your main settings, once these are filled in simply hit the convert button and sit back, kick your feet up and wait for the film to finish, the conversion time with these settings should be roughly half the length of whatever it is your converting - so if it's a large movie may aswell go grab a cup of tea for a while .

Once the conversion is finished you want the movie on your phone;

Hook your phone up by USB cable and locate where your new movie was left.
Once found right click and select 'Send To' you should have the option of a new drive at the very bottom, for example mine is the 'H:/ Drive'.

Send the movie on over, disconnect and open up Smartmovie - You may need to perform a scan of your system when looking for the movie once it's found sit back and mission accomplished.

Wow... I just use mine for games. I get free service so it could be my phone, but I tend to keep those realms separate. I only have a 32 meg MultiMedia Card, and I doubt that can store much of anything.

I haven't found anyone to play with, either. As I have a couple units and usually dupes of games, I try to get my girl or a buddy to come over to play some Bluetooth. It really does work well.

I'm waiting to put up an Elder Scrolls N-Gage review on http://ngage.gamespy.com/ as soon as I get a top story image. It's definitely an interesting game.
"interesting" has many connotations. Is it good, or is it crap?

Does anyone have any idea how well the QD is selling? Although people rag on this system a lot, I also find it interesting that the console (both versions) is often hard to come by.

myke.
Ah, Lanny Poffo. You genius, you. Methinks he'd own John Cena in a rapoff. ;)

Anyway, the review is up, and it's both good and crap. As Grave said, there IS slowdown from hell. Also, load time is horrendous. And the AI blows. In a bandit hideout, I'd open a door, slash at bad guys, then back up and close the door. They didn't know how to open their own doors.

However, I still played an assload of it. I don't know why, but I had some fun with it. Not enough to buy it, of course, but if you see it used for under $10 in 6 months, you may want to give it a try.
Oh, and Lee, I love your page. I also read it whenever you update. And if I was to get an N-Gage, which version should I get?
Nice. Thanks, Mr. Anderson.

The QD is just so much better than the old-school model. It feels better, looks better, and doesn't have the main problems the other one did (side-talkin', battery removal). It's actually a decent phone if you need one, too.

Just read the review. Too bad they didn't spend a little extra time to get the game working properly. I was very excited about it, but now I may wait to get it until it drops to clearance price. The top games on my want list are PK, PTG and Splinter Cell 2.
And if I was to get an N-Gage, which version should I get?
I really like the original one, but I think i'd give up stereo sound for the smaller size and better battery capacity of the QD. I don't even mind the side talking but i feel like i'm carrying around a batarang sometimes.

man i just got wwe beta for ngage. its not too bad but i hope they tighten it up a lil. its allready my most played ngage game. i just hope they put in their real songs

Damn Milkyman the Asian girl in your sig is hot ... no wonder you call yourself Milkyman ;)

Maybe you should find a user named Towelman and together

Anyone here see any interesting titles coming out for the NGAGE?

How did you become a beta tester?

lol i wish i was a beta tester..but actually the beta was released on the net

I heard the gameplay was pretty fluid and it was easy to pull the moves off. That, to me, is the single-most important part of a handheld fighting/wrestling game.

I've played far too many games that make it near impossible to pull off a special move.

Good news for Cingular customers in Ohio and Western PA: You can buy a QD for $99.99 after $50 rebate through 1/29/05: Click Here

Well, it's not an amazing offer, but it is (1) cheaper than normal by almost $100, and (2) from Cingular. I'm going to have to bust a cap if a phone from Cingular doesn't work.

myke.

Time to resurrect this thread! I hooked my friend up with some N-Gage stuff, as he's another Finnish guy wanting to support his nationality. We played a bunch of Bluetooth stuff -- Puyo, Worms, and Pathway. It's a shame more people don't own the platform, so others could enjoy Bluetooth.

Worms is really good. I've never been too big into it, but it's perfect for N-Gage. I think I'll try to put up a preview some time this week or next.

I also reviewed Colin McRae not too long ago. Awesome game, console-quality racer.

Does anybody else think that the N-Gage is this generations Atari Jaguar? I read the Jag forums over at AtariAge, and i get the exact same vibe that I do over there that I do here. Alot of homebrew going on with both platforms, which I think may be the result of not alot of industry support. With both, it seems that you either LOVE it or have absolutely no interest in it. Both platforms seem to be hated more than they deserve, and I would venture that both will still have an active homebrew community 10 years from now (Jag games are still being professionally produced today).

no, it's this generation's Virtual Boy

(Nokia's) entire N-Gage games unit looks in doubt, according to rumours afoot.
The INQ's Nordic mole claims Nokia is plotting to get rid of its entire Bochum, Germany facility by Q1 2006. That's not just N-Gage R&D we're talking about, it's the production facility as well.

Nokia was refusing calls at press time. Sven Mole was pretty much adamant that this is the end for the N-Gage as we know it, although Nokia could easily switch N-Gage production elsewhere.

Last week Nokia admitted it was dispensing with around 250 R&D staff in Finland while around 100 or so other R&D staff would go from other locations.

OK, I'm ordering an N-Gage QD (T-Mobile), and I have some newbie questions, since this is going to by my first cell phone, and I'm getting it for mainly work purposes, but I also want to get pocket Kingdoms, and maybe a couple other games.

1) Is the QD a decent quality phone? I'm sure it's not going to be as good as a standalone phone, but hopefully it's not a complete piece of junk either.

2) What do I need to add to my plan to be able to play on N-Gage arena. I didn't order any extra bells or whistles, and I'm just getting the cheapest plan they had. It seems like I need T-Zones, but I want to make sure. Also, once I get my phone going, I can add T-Zones to my plan right away right?

3) What games are worth looking into, besides Pocket Kingdom?

Thanks for any help you guys can provide

From what I've heard, the QD is a pretty capable phone. No side talkin' here. But I only had the original N-Gage, and it was a great phone. I even loved to side talk.

I believe all you'll need is the T-Mobile T-Zone plan, and you'll be good to go.

See I'm the sort of person who would side talk just to make people think I'm nuts. But I wouldn't want to screw around with opening the thing every time I want to change cards or games

theres a special version of t-zones that t-mobile has for 9.99 extra that will let you play on arena, im just using basic 2.99 t-zones , i have never tried connecting to the arena though.

pathway to glory is good, kind of like the action sequences of x-com but set in ww2 and uh.. no aliens..

I also have the original n-gage so i can't really talk about how the QD is but gabe from penny-arcade really likes it, as a phone... he says its a great phone but a half assed game console.

I thought you n-gagers might find this funny

http://www.reallifecomics.com/20050201_1371.png

well if anyone knows which one to sign up for before I do it, that'd be greatly appreciated. When I ordered the phone from Amazon, there was a 4.99 T-Zones and a 9.99 T-Zones

the n-gage page on the t-mobile website says:
When you couple the N-Gage QD with your voice plan and $9.99 t-zones Pro, you get unlimited access to N-Gage wireless gaming and more.

so it looks like you'll need the 9.99 plan to get on the arena, mine is 2.99 cuz i've had it for a while now and i get "grandfathered" in as price goes up.

there's lots of good n-gage information at the howardforums n-gage forum

I don't have an N-Gage, but I noticed (and actually picked up a few) some games are down to $4.99 @ Best Buy.

Sonic N
Bomberman
Super Monkey Ball
Splinter Cell
Ashen
Red Faction
Virtua Tennis

Might've been more, I just snagged the first 3 I listed for collectible purposes and they came up $4.37 each.

I've just heard of it, haven't seen it in person.

By the way, do you guys know you can download Snakes for free for the N-Gage? It's a new 3D version. I hear it's pretty good. I plan on playing/reviewing it this week. You can get it here: http://snakesoutbreak.com/

I also plan on reviewing SSX: Out of Bounds soon, plus King of Fighters when I get around to it (I previewed it a while back). I wish I got paid more for these, so I could put more of my time into them...

I've been told that many Gamestops and EBgames aren't going to be carrying them anymore. I know my local Gamestops and Ebgames already quit carrying all N-Gage items.

It looks like before too long, we'll have to get all our games and accessories online.

Whats the best NES emulator on the N-gage? vNES is okay, but since you have to pay for most of them, I want to make sure I get a real good one. I probably would pay like $10 to get a really good NES emulator on N-gage..

Also I've heard there's a program where you can just put a DVD in your computer and it'll rip and convert the movie to N-gage playable size and format? is that true?

I haven't tried any NES emulators so I can't help you there.
the dvd program you mention is this one i think http://www.makayama.com/dvd2nokia.html

Well I finally broke down and got one !! I got a N-Gage QD and racked up some games (Pathway, Pocket Kingdom, Tomb Raider, Tiger 2004, Fifa 2004, THPS, Monkey Ball, Spider man 2, Sims Bustin), a 128MB mmc and a mmn reader. I am a total newb at this sort of this (tech wise I am a console man and thats about it), but from what I read and hear about ths handheld, it seems capable of a helluva lot.

So that being said I need some suggestions as far as best types of: MP3 players, emus, apps etc to download into my gage. What do you all suggest as the best you have encountered? Any help is appreciated. Thanx.
I have an original N-gage, and 2 DQ's (One has a white screen when I bootup...any help?). and 20 games or so.
You've most likely overloaded the internal memory. You'll have to take it to a Nokia dealer and get the memory flashed.

Congrats. Welcome to the dark side.

I don't know the name offhand, but find an OGG player for a Symbian 60 phone. OGG files are supposed to be about 1/3 the size of an mp3 file and have the same quality.

You must get the Smartmovie player from www.lonelycatgames.com. It will cost around $27 to get it, but it's well worth it. You'll be able to convert just about any file type. Great program.

YewNES is a great NES emulator. You can get it here - http://rds.yahoo.com/S=2766679/K=ye...=1109085308/*-http://www.yewsoft.com/home.php

You can find a lot more info at www.ngagegaming.com

Thanx alot for the suggestions, Man i cant wait to delve into this bad boy. Anyone play the MMORPG (I think the name was Tempia) for the gage yet? i saw it on N-gage.com in a post and it looked awesome.

I definitely prefer to write about good games -- especially for a system that needs them like N-Gage. Still got a bunch more on deck, like KoF. Hopefully will be some good ones.

Well count me in too. I picked up a QD in December, and it's been the best damn phone I've ever had. Thanks for the links Grave!

Sweet. I just bought a QD from Michaellvortega; I hope it works with Cingular, and I can't wait to get back into the games I have set aside.

I heard that there is no USB connection on the QD. Is that true? If so, how in the world can I hook it up to my computer to transfer video files?

myke.
...I just watched an old wrestling match on my PSP as an experiment (I only have the 32MB memory card). The video quality wasn't so good; preliminary results lead me to say that I'd be much happier using my N-Gage to view videos; the poor resolution/frame rate become much too obvious on the PSP.

Your QD should work just fine with Cingular, mine does. Yay for Shuttle XPC's with built-in card readers!
you can either use bluetooth if you have it or a card reader to put the files directly on your QD's mmc card.
Know any deals on an MMC reader?

Where did you pick up your QD? Did it come with a dummy sim card (and if so, what service)? Any other advice, since I'm paranoid about making sure it works?

i use cingular and my plan is...

free cingular 2 cingular
450 anytime min
5000 night and weekend min

atleast thats what it says on my bill,

can i go on the ARENA without getting charged? or is it not in my plan?

ps: does anyone know where i can find the cheapest 512MB-1GB MMC?

Does the original N-gage accept SD flash cards? I really don't want to buy a big MMC card when I have plenty of SD cards lying around.
