The Official PlayStation Vita Thread - 11/4: FW 3.00 Coming Just in Time for the PS4 Launch!

Yeah, I took a look on that list and realized that pretty much none of the Plus games are on there.

I did finally beat Age of Zombies (which I bought on PSP about a year ago) just now. Funny how being able to play it as a true twin stick shooter makes it not only easier, but more fun.

There was a great interview with Stewart Gilray from Just Add Water and Lorne Lanning of Oddworld Inhabitants on the PS Blogcast and they talked about the Vita port of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath. They mentioned some of the ways they're using the Vita's inputs for controls. To switch between 1st and 3rd person, you touch the screen with both of your thumbs. Melee is done by tapping the back touchpad. Zooming in and out with the sniper scope is done by pinching in and out. The port was started about five weeks ago and the guy that's doing the port had never touched a Vita before, which took him about a week or so to figure out how to work with the Vita and get it running. It'll be in beta by the time that E3 starts and they're hoping to have that port done and ready for release by late June if everything goes perfectly.

They've announced a Superbrothers + Jim Guthrie (Sword & Sworcery) collaboration for an album of Sound Shapes levels.

A message from a representative at Superbrothers, written in the midst of a spring thunderstorm in the hill country at the Quebec/Vermont border.

It is with immense pleasure that we are announcing our involvement with a video game project known as Sound Shapes. We are extra excited to be contributing alongside sworcery maestro Jim Guthrie. This represents the latest in a series of Superbrothers X Jim Guthrie a/v collaborations dating back to 2005′s musical film Children of the Clone and 2008′s Dot Matrix Revolution, but this will be our first a/v collaboration since 2011′s cult classic videogame Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP.

Much like Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP, Sound Shapes is a made-in-Toronto DIY videogame that is unusually collaborative and has a heavy emphasis on synesthetic audiovisual style. What’s more, the people making Sound Shapes are all basically our very best pals – they’re the folks with whom we play board games, drink the beers, go skating and play hockey. On every level it’s an honor and a thrill to be involved.

The Superbrothers + Jim Guthrie collaboration will take the form of a Sound Shapes ‘album’ – a series of thematically connected & musically-linked levels known as CORPOREAL.

Sound Shapes is coming to PlayStation Vita, and it’ll be available before too long. Get psyched!!!

The collaborative process

After some initial discussion with Queasy, we chose to explore some of the concepts in prior Superbrothers films including Children of the Clone and Dot Matrix Revolution, so our levels are populated by computers, mainframes, office workers and water coolers. My mom was one of the first female computer programmers in Canada and my father worked as a mainframe computer salesman for decades, so it was nice to set aside the skeletons & space babies of sworcey and get to work on 20th century visual concepts. Meanwhile, the video game design takes the friendly platforming mechanics of Sound Shapes and stretches them in the direction of something like Impossible Mission for C-64 & Spectrum.

With this new collaboration the configuration is quite different. The game design, level design and sound integration are being handled by the Sound Shapes experts at Queasy. The order of operations was a little different this time around too. On S:S&S EP, many of the songs predated the project and I was able to create the world & concepts by listening to specific songs, many of them pre-existing compositions from Jim. In this case, the art assets were created without a specific soundtrack, and then it was up to Jim to craft his sounds to fit the look and concept.

Of course, the real work took place at Queasy & Capy, where a wide-ranging assortment of designers & creators – the Sound Shapes experts – put all the pieces together. Thanks so much for all your hard work folks, it has been a pleasure contributing to your efforts!

So, super excited to share this collaboration and can’t wait for you folks to check it out yourselves. If you’re going to be at E3, be sure to swing by the PlayStation booth for some hands-on time!

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/05/22/pulzar-ps-vitas-next-ar-play-blasts-off-next-month/

A new AR Play game, PulzAR, has been announced for a June release:
We are excited to announce a captivating new addition to the Augmented Reality (AR) Play line-up next month with the release of PulzAR. PulzAR is a mind boggling, potentially Earth-shattering puzzle game that turns nearly any flat surface into an epic battle against time and a looming celestial event with the use of your AR Play cards.

7246765256_c5133f0fc2_z.jpg

You see, in PulzAR, the Earth is in grave danger. Somewhere just beyond our planet’s outer atmosphere, a series of colossal asteroids are spinning ever closer on a deadly collision course to wipe out humankind. So far, all attempts to divert their trajectory have failed. Now, in mankind’s desperate last stand against certain catastrophe, it’s up to you to command a network of explosive rockets and try to blast the asteroids into a harmless meteor shower before they reach Earth.

Using precision laser technology, you have only a limited time to program the guidance system using a series of reflectors, splitters, and filters that activate the nodes that will launch the rockets towards their targets. Once launched, you are able to follow the rocket, looking up with your PS Vita as it reaches beyond the atmosphere and into the vastness of space with only one purpose… to destroy some serious space rock! The fate of planet Earth rests with you. Good luck!
I hope the AR Play thing is a sign that this will be free like the other games.

The Netflix app has a new update that helps with the responsiveness.

Due to the new PSP/Minis additions, my Vita is now full of games, so I need that folder update ASAP. I still have 6.6 GBs left, so I can handle more games.

Wait.... What the fuck?
I bought a SNK mini on the Vita, and it tells me I can't download to the system?!

The two I have for free from PSN+ work and look fantastic on the screen. Like unbelievably sharp.
I went to buy Ikari Warriors on the Vita directly and I can't play it?

Why the hell is it on the Vita store?

Zen Studios announced an action-rhythm game for Vita:
Zen Studios today announced KickBeat, an experimental rhythm game featuring fully 3D characters and combat and high-energy music, set to release this summer on PlayStation®Vita.

KickBeat offers players several innovative ways to interact with music. The game combines beat-matching mechanics with an acrobatic style of martial arts, turning every song into a raucous battle. The game also features a music analyzer that allows players to create new tracks from their own music libraries.

“Several years ago, we asked ourselves, 'What would happen if we took a beat-matching game, replaced the abstract cues like bars, arrows, and button icons with kung fu fight scenes, and set it all to some incredibly intense music?'” said Neil Sorens, Creative Director for Zen Studios. "We spent three years turning that idea into in Kickbeat, and anyone looking for something fresh and exciting and the music genre is in for a treat."

The Kickbeat soundtrack hits hard; it’s comprised of licensed tracks from a diverse lineup of artists ranging from well-known bands such as Pendulum and Marilyn Manson, to indie pioneers Celldweller and Blue Stahli, to hidden talents like electronic music producer Voicians and Taiwanese rapper Shen Yi.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2JUd8N54flo

“Kickbeat is a showcase example of passion, risk and creativity. Traditional publishers might shy away from this type of thinking, but we will embrace it. After all, what's the point of working in video games if you just keep making the same one?" said Zsolt Kigyossy, Managing Director for Zen Studios.

Zen Studios will demo KickBeat at the upcoming E3 Conference in Los Angeles, CA.

For more information, visit the Zen Studios blog or www.KickBeat.com.

Some more info from the PS Blog post:
As you may have gathered from the trailer, enemies circle around you before attacking from one or more of the four cardinal directions. Their attacks are synched to the song’s beat and to other high-energy moments in the music: guitars, vocals, and so on. To defeat one, you just press the button corresponding to their direction at the correct time (right as they move in to attack you). For example, when an enemy attacks from the right, you press the right direction button or the Circle button to send them sprawling. You can also just use the touch screen – tap the portion of the screen where the enemy is attacking from, and you’ll get the same result. Two or three enemies at once? No problem! Just press all the appropriate buttons/regions at once. You can use both the directional and face buttons simultaneously, an essential skill to learn once you get to the expert difficulty levels and you’re beset by a constant stream of enemies.

We also thought it would be fun to be able to put your own music into the game – that was my favorite feature in Audiosurf. We’ve got a feature that will allow you to do just that, with no scripting on your part required – just put in a couple pieces of info, customize a couple settings to your taste, and the game creates a new level for you to play

It should be fixed now, so you should be able to download it now.

I found out what happens when you try to download something once you've reached the limit:

Are you referring to Guerrilla War? Because that's the exact mini that I can't download to my Vita despite it being on the PS Vita Store.

EDIT:
Er never mind. But Guerrilla War is also an SNK mini that I'm unable to download. I'll try again once I get home, though.

39 PSP Games, 20 Minis, 15 PSN Games and Demos, 6 Retail Games, and 20 System and PSN Apps. There are a few more Minis and PSP games I could have on there if they added folders.

I have about 35 spots open. With upcoming games, digital titles, more minis, and PSX... I'm going to be over pretty soon as well.

Yeah, someone else tweeted to Jeff after seeing my comment saying that specific game was also not working. They probably checked all the SNK mini titles.

Chris Selogy ‏@cselogy
@jeffrubenstein Guerrilla War is doing the same thing, so you might want to double check the SNK Minis.

@cselogy fixed!

The classic SNK titles look fantastic on Vita. Better than anything else I've seen.

Well there's like 10 default apps, and I have those. Aside from that I'd guess I have like 20 other icons between card based games, full digital games (well just one), psp games, PSN games, and minis.

I don't have a PS3 and there are so many mins I don't know where to start...

what minis would you recommend? Are there any options in the store to find out the top downloaded minis?

Has anyone played young thor? I have read good things and it's only $2.49..

Young Thor is good as a side-scrolling God of War game for kids, but it has progression problems. Instead of having 16 different levels, they have four levels with four versions of each that are rated from 1-10 in terms of difficulty, so you have to play through levels in the order of difficulty if you want a shot at getting through them.

Here are the Minis I'd recommend:

The 2D Adventures of Rotating Octopus Character - $3.99 - Platformer
Age of Zombies - $4.99 - Dual-Stick Shooter
Alien Zombie Death - $0.99 - Arcade Shooter
Blast Off - $2.99 - Space/Gravity Puzzle Game
Cubixx - $3.99 - 3D Qix
Doodle Fit - $1.49 - Fit Tetris pieces into spaces
Echoes - $0.99 - Collect crystals with a girl as her previous movements turn into obstacles
Mecho Wars - $4.99 - Advance Wars with a weird art style
Might Flip Champs DX - $5.99 - Puzzle-Platformer
Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess! - $4.99 - Vertical Platformer
OMG-Z - $3.49 - Take out groups of zombies in as few shots as possible.
One Epic Game - $0.99 - Side-scrolling Shooter/Platformer/Runner

When Vikings Atack is a new PS3/Vita game for PSN with support for all of the cross-platform features (play/save/buy):
7258893506_c52ceb3275_z.jpg

Hey folks, I’m here today to announce a new PSN title coming this year! I’m very excited to introduce When Vikings Attack for PS3 and PS Vita.

In this all-action fighting adventure, a battalion of Viking invaders, 1200 years late to the party, are causing havoc in your town. Imagine getting together a posse of local citizens: a construction worker, a butcher, a policeman, a pastor, and a schoolboy, then ripping up a phone booth or picking up a car,and hurling it at the advancing Viking hordes. That’s the sort of crazy action you can expect in this totally new and original PSN title for PS3 and PS Vita.

Grab whatever you can and get ready to do battle!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEjsmi_M4n8

Featuring both adventure and Versus gameplay modes that can be played with one to four players, the game has been winning fans within the walls of PlayStation with its manic, quick-fire gameplay ever since it came into being.

7258892882_931dde949c.jpg

7258893212_a050db2891.jpg

Did I mention that it’s also a full cross play/save/buy title? So all gameplay modes can be played between PS Vita and PS3 in pretty much any combination you can imagine: two PS3s and two Vitas or one PS3 and three Vitas or one PS3 with three players and one Vita… I could go on but let’s just say you can have four players in any combination of systems you want. Also, with cross-platform save you can carry on your Adventure mode progress no matter where you are, just upload the save file from your PS3 and download it to your PS Vita or vice versa. Then to top it all off and make this the perfect Crossplay game, we are also offering both versions for one price, no matter which version you buy you will get the other for free… a pretty good deal, if you ask me!

I’ll be back in the coming weeks along with some of the guys from Clever Beans (the development team behind the game) to introduce you to even more features and let you in on some behind-the-scenes details of how the title came into being and what you can expect when it launches later this year.

Post any questions you have in the comments and I’ll endeavor to answer whatever I can. Thanks and good day!

More details on Foosball 2012's cross-platform play/save/buy support:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwg2-ApUI1Y

I’m back to share more details about Foosball 2012! Specifically, to introduce the cross-platform functionalities between PS3 and PS Vita. We didn’t want to have a game that has a version for PS3 and a separate version for PS Vita. We wanted an experience where you don’t need to worry about which device you are currently using, because you get exactly the same game — including your current progress, unlocks, and DLC — every time you play, regardless of whether you are currently on PS3 or PS Vita.

First of all, when you buy Foosball 2012, you’ll get it for both the PS3 and PS Vita for a price of a single PSN game. The same applies for additional content that you will be able to buy. Purchase the game once and you can use it on both the PS3 and PS Vita.

Secondly, when you play the game, your saves are automatically uploaded to a cloud storage within PSN and synchronized between PS3 and PS Vita. Whenever you start the game, the progress you made on any platform, including the online multiplayer statistics and Trophies, is right there and automatically synchronized.

Finally, PS3 players and PS Vita players can play online matches against each other! And even if you own only one of the devices, you will still be able to play against the people who play on the other device. So it’s pretty safe to say that there will always be someone to play with!

Foosball 2012 will be released soon on the PlayStation Store. For more details about the game visit the official web page, or follow us on Twitter or Facebook.
In our final developer diary video next week, I will share details about the game’s various single-player and multiplayer play modes. See you soon!

The comments for the Foosball 2012 article are interesting, as the guy is being very open about the cross-platform support:

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012...-platform-play/comment-page-1/#comment-718147
Whether there will be the buy-one-get-one-free offer always depends on the developer or publisher. We are a 3rd party as well, as Foosball 2012 is self-published by Grip Games. The fact that we will offer the PS3 and PS Vita versions for one price was our decision and every other developer/ publisher who publishes the same game for PS3 and PS Vita can do the same thing.

If you see a game on the PSN that has both PS3 and PS Vita versions and you need to pay for both, you only need to do that because the publisher of the game decided so.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012...-platform-play/comment-page-1/#comment-718143
Technically speaking, it is still two games. You cannot just take a PS3 game and make it run on Vita. We have made the PS3 version of Foosball 2012 and PS Vita version of Foosball 2012 and then implemented the cross-play feature and cloud save for synchronization between PS3 and PS Vita to erase the gap between these two games and make them behave like one game.

It is possible that in the future, every PSN game will have a PS3 and PS Vita versions with similar cross-play features like Foosball 2012, but I don’t see it as likely. It always requires a lot of work from the developer to implement it.

So, you should definitely appreciate the developers, who take the time to do this ;-)

Some more info on the game itself:

We will have a final release date for you around the E3, or soon after. Anyway, it will be sometime at the break of June / July.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012...-platform-play/comment-page-1/#comment-718026
Thanks! There will be a playable trial for both the Vita and PS3 version.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012...-platform-play/comment-page-1/#comment-718035
We will announce the price point together with the final release date, but I can already promise, that it will be less than $9.99 ;-)

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012...-platform-play/comment-page-1/#comment-718046
There are two trophy sets. If you get a trophy on PS3, you will also get a trophy on PS Vita. So, you’ll have it twice. This is the way trophies work at the moment.

But on the other hand, you’ll at least get two trophy packs for a single price ;-)

Hmm not sure if resistance is going to be worth it. Might pre order it to get the DLC. Is gamestops pre order DLC the same as Best Buys? Btw its gonna be on sale for 5 bucks off (35) at Frys, so you can price match as best buy if you live near a Frys.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2012/05/29/introducing-snapshot-coming-to-ps-vita-and-ps3-this-fall/

Snapshot for PS3 and Vita has been announced with cross-platform saves:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypoZMjnUnyQ

I’m proud to announce that Snapshot, our 2D puzzle platformer, is coming to PS Vita and PS3 (with cross-platform saves) this fall. In Snapshot, you control a robot named Pic. Pic carries a high-tech camera that can “capture” and remove objects and parts of the environment. You can then paste the picture back into the world causing all the objects to come tumbling back out. If you’re looking for a new puzzle game with a twist, keep reading!

The game begins with Pic powering on for the first time in a dusty abandoned laboratory. Uncertain about his purpose and why he was built, he wanders into the forest that surrounds the laboratory. This is where you’ll first start to use your camera to take photographs of objects. The first chapter of the game will hit you with a series of puzzles involving moving objects around within the levels, and it’s easier than you think. If you want to reposition a box, simply snap a photo to capture it, then paste the picture back into the world and watch the box fall back out of it.

As you progress through Snapshot you’ll use the camera in new and interesting ways, like taking photographs of light and using it to interact with physics. Your camera even captures an object’s momentum. This, combined with the ability to rotate photographs as you paste them, leads to more complex and interesting gameplay. For example, if a snowball is falling when you snap a photo, the snowball will hurl upwards if you paste that photograph back into the world upside-down. You can even use this to take photographs of enemy projectiles and aim them right back at them!

Snapshot is the first game developed by our small indie studio, Retro Affect. The sounds of Snapshot are created by the amazing Jordan Fehr, and the incredible music is composed by Wil Whitlark. Leave any comments or questions you may have in the comments below and I hope to bring you more Snapshot related news both here and at our official site as we get closer to our PSN launch later this year!
