Yeah, honestly, how lazy are you if you can't just hit the pause button?

The reality is that it's the game that determines if it pauses automatically when you go to the XMB. Why? Because you might access the XMB in the middle of a multiplayer game and you certainly can't pause that. Sometimes, you might actually want to let the game run in the background while accessing the XMB.

I'm guessing it's a game by game basis thing. I always press start because you can never be too careful.

Cross game invites? In-game voice chat? Still questions I'm asking. I'm guessing yes on 1, no on 2. Not everything was shown, so I guess we're going to find out for ourselves. The way the PS blog puts it, the next video is going up tonight. But that's just a guess on my part. They say shortly, so I don't know.

He said music stored on your HDD can be used as custom soundtracks. I wonder if you can't do the same with streaming music? I would assume you can.
http://www.joystiq.com/2008/06/30/sony-officially-reveals-ps3-firmware-2-40-features/

Noticed this in Joystiq's write-up on the video:

Will the next video on trophies be out in just a few more hours?
That's when the embargo on 2.4 ends, apparently. I'm sure that whatever bloggers and game sites know will be up at that time. It's kind of funny that this is embargo-able news, though. Personally I can't wait for it!

Also, I don't think that you can stream for a custom soundtrack. That's how I play my music on my PS3, and in games that actually allow this, you can only play from the hard drive (High Velocity Bowling, Super Stardust HD). What's odd, still, is that this feature has been available forever on the PS3, but no one has used it. I don't know what they're doing in 2.4 that's any different than what existed before, besides giving us a universal interface for playing music in-game.

What exactly is the functionality in-game on the dashboard? Is there more or less than what you can do on PS3 after 2.4? (I know that there's cross game invites. What else?)

In-game XMB doesn't interest me as much given how little I play my PS3 and that all thirdparty games I tend to get on the 360. I have a few PS3 games but from what I can tell, only MGS4 will have trophies. Resistance will not, Heavenly Sword won't because Sony killed off the series because it "wasn't marketable" and I don't think Warhawk's trophies will be interesting since the game has a massive awards system by default. Basically only one game I own supports them.

I'm just waiting for Ratchet & Clank, Motorstorm, and Uncharted (EDIT: and Devil May Cry 4) to drop in price (Greatest Hits are LONG overdue. Will those have trophies too?

System software update 2.40 also delivers trophies to recognise players’ achievements in the online arena. Other competitive activities recognise winners with trophies – so why not gaming on PS3? Many online games will have gold, silver and bronze trophies – with platinum available for those who snag all three – all displayed on the PS3 Home Menu (XMB) for everyone to see. Complementing these enhanced communications features, the Friends list capacity will double to 100 Friends so you can stay in touch with even more PS3 owners around the world.

Super Stardust HD, a PLAYSTATION Network-exclusive released in June 2007, will be the first game to leverage Trophies and will offer a variety of trophies. Trophy support in Super Stardust HD will be available for first-time users who purchase the game soon after firmware v2.40 is released, while those who previously purchased and downloaded the title will be prompted to install a free patch.

PS3 users can expect to see additional games bringing Trophies support to their feature sets through 2008 and beyond, providing even greater opportunity to showcase their accomplishments and compete with friends. The following first-party games are also slated to offer Trophy support:
 • BUZZ! Quiz TV
 • LittleBigPlanet
 • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
 • NBA 09 - PS3
 • PAIN
 • PixelJunk Eden
 • Resistance 2
 • SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation
 • Warhawk
To further emphasize the community aspects of this system software update, the amount of people you can add to your PSN friends list has been doubled, to 100.

The update also adds a mini-control panel that you can use while playing music and an internet search feature powered by Google that allows you to initiate search directly from the XMB (similar to what we added to the PSP recently). In addition, when you’re using the XMB or accessing the XMB from in-game, the current time and date will be displayed in the upper right hand corner. There are a few more minor enhancements included in this update, once the update is live you’ll be able to read about them here.

Firmware v2.40 will become available for download on July 2nd. We hope you enjoy these much-requested features, and look forward to your feedback.
Great news. Can't wait for July 2nd.

Guaranteed, CheapyD will complain about:

a. How long it takes to download the update

b. Still no cross-game invites

I, for one, am hyped to start collecting trophies! I just raped my high score in SSHD. Too bad I didn't wait for July 2nd...

Some of the trophies for SSHD in 1up's video:

-Boost through five tokens.
-Boost through 15 tokens.
-One for beating each of the planets in Arcade.
-Collecting 10 bombs.
-Collecting 20 bombs.
-Collect 5 shield tokens while already having a shield.

Shows right between title and icon what kind of trophy it is.

Read the third bullet. ;)

I hope it's retroactive for SSHD since you have to beat a planet to unlock the next one in arcade mode and the game keeps track of a bunch of stats, too.

yeah, they're definitely retroactive. At least from when a patch comes in. Looking at 1up's video, you can tell the trophies for SSHD occurred at the same time.

I might be jumping the gun on this.
http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=145245
Cant find the link but I am pretty sure Ted Price said that he was misquoted on that, and clarified that R1 will NOT be getting trophy support.

Good call on the retroactive part, I did not even notice they were all achieved at the same time.

Edit- Found it. No trophy support for R1.
QuackPot asks: Will R1 and R2 feature trophy and Home support?

Ted Price: That's the plan. [Update: Insomniac's been in touch since this interview was published to clarify that comment, which should not have applied to Resistance 1 as well. Check the news story for an explanation.]

They make you play again because some saves are not protected where someone can just download a save and cheat. PAIN might not need it since its saves were already protected.

I think the GTAIV example is a poor one, since there is no achievement/trophy mechanism in the PS3 version whereas games like Devil May Cry 4, Uncharted, and to some extent Metal Gear Solid 4 do.

And for DMC4, you have to use your own save file to earn accomplishments.

Joystiq's coverage of this is teh biased. They are making a huge, disparaging deal over the fact that you might have to pause the game before going into xmb. Who cares??? They just have an overall negative attitude toward something that is entirely positive.
So let me get this straight. On day 1, which is this wednesday, the only game to support trophies will be SSHD?

Weak?
First party wise, yes. There may be some third parties which are supporting it, but we do not know yet.

The big issue is, many of Sony's first party devs for an example, Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Evolution Studios, etc. have moved onto new games and are no longer supporting their older games (especially Insomniac and Evolution Studios who must get their game out by the end of the year), but all their new games will support it. Some third party games for an example, the studio no longer exists or is owned by someone else (so oh course they cannot patch a game to support it). Warhawk is still heavily be supported (because that's all Dylan really is doing right now) with updates, so it makes it easier for them to implement trophies.

Now the question is, how long do you think it is going to take for larger games (COD4, GTAIV, MGS4, Burnout, etc) to jump on the bandwagon? Shouldn't take to long, seeing as most of them already have achievements for the 360. Glad this is coming out so soon.

If it didn't get patched for rumble, I doubt they will bother putting trophies in.

With Acitivision/IW thinking, they are busy making brand new games right now. IW looks at it as them being busy with their own game (possibly a sci-fi game), while Activision just sees CoD5 getting rumble/trophies because it will be out soon, so why bother adding it to an older game in their eyes.

GTAIV there's a good chance, since the game just came out.

This isn't directed toward anyone in particular, but instead of complaining I'd rather just have Sony release the 2.4 framework ASAP and just add features with later firmwares, which they'll undoubtedly do.

I doubt GTAIV will be patched with trophies because they weren't even in the PS3 version (compared to achievements). I feel that games with past trophies/accomplishment support will get patched (Darkness, Uncharted, Ratchet, DMC4, MGS4, Heavenly Sword).

I DO NOT LIKE the idea of no retroactive trophy support. But I think there's a way you could get them by beating the game once (DMC4 already has an XBL situation where you can only get accomplishments through your own save files). And I believe it'd be possible for a developer to patch in support where...

EXAMPLE: In Metal Gear Solid 4, you beat the game, it checks which emblems you have on the save file you just played through. At that point, it unlocks trophies for every emblem you earned (I'm guessing Emblems = Trophies here).
This isn't directed toward anyone in particular, but instead of complaining I'd rather just have Sony release the 2.4 framework ASAP and just add features with later firmwares, which they'll undoubtedly do.
Pretty much. What this firmware does is release a foundation for many things to come. Getting the XMB up in-game is the difficult part. I could see most all games supporting trophies in the future, and many games taking advantage of the new XMB features. Eventually, everything will come together. Right now it may not seem like much, but eventually it will be huge.

Trophies in just a few games should not be surprising, since development kits having these features were released only a month ago.
So I'm guessing my copy of The Simpsons Game won't be getting trophies any time soon.
No, because someone can download a game save, then get stuff from someone else's work. Also, a dev has to implement the trophies themselves from scratch. Most devs now are busy on new projects, and the chances of them going back are very slim. But all their future games should support it.

I was really hoping MGS would support Trophies. Now I guess I'll just have to play through a 2nd time for the pure enjoyment of it...sigh...
Joystiq's coverage of this is teh biased. They are making a huge, disparaging deal over the fact that you might have to pause the game before going into xmb. Who cares??? They just have an overall negative attitude toward something that is entirely positive.
Absolutely agree. I stopped going there long ago.

All the talk about having to replay old games to get trophies makes me happy I never bothered to play any single player games much, only about 1-2 hours in GTAIV.
Trophies are *not* going to be retroactive.

So every game save you have made is worthless.

That is Teh Suck.
Yeah that's the only negative part I see in this whole thing. I guess it's great if you just bought a PS3 or something, but I've had my system for a while already. I have already beaten all my PS3 games and there is no way in hell I'm going back and playing them again just to get Trophies. I assumed games like Uncharted, Ratchet, Resistance, etc would have them, since all three games have the skill point/other crap inside the game already. Oh well.

So older PS3 games are not going to have Trophies at all? Isn't that going to be a large percentage of PS3 games then? At least all future games *hopefully* will support it.

Pausing is not that big of a deal. In fact it's nothing. Why would people complain about that?

Trophies can eat a dick. Don't y'all play games for fun and enjoyment, and not gold stars?

Really, raise your hand if you're actually surprised that trophies are (1) stupid, (2) incompletely applied, (3) not retroactive or (4) half-assed.

Now, if your hand is raised, you ought to be ashamed of yourself.

In-game XMB is coming this week, I'm happy about that, and couldn't give a fuck if my system wants to congratulate me for playing a game with a digital picture of a fucking trophy. Boring. Just like that wanking gamerscore nonsense.

Yeah, Gamerscore was cool to me for the first couple weeks of the 360, but it's come to be completely meaningless to me.

I'll have to download the update after my vacation.

I haven't gone over the PS3 guidelines in much detail yet. But I am guessing the pausing is not an oversight, but a guideline laid by Sony. Their PSP API allows you to know when the OS screen is present, so the dev can auto-pause if they want, but their documentation recommends that you do not. I am not 100% sure of the reasoning behind this. Maybe so you can pull up the OS menu while a game is loading?

The old save game thing is an oversight. The second that they knew trophies were coming (like a 1 year+ ago), they should have implemented a protection mechanism. IMHO, they could have even been protecting the save games from day 1, "just in case".

They could even have done a stealth update which encrypted existing save games (though it would only take the corruption of one persons save game for the internets to explode with sony-stealth-scandal).

I don't mind replaying my games from scratch. Gets me more play time for my money. I'm just sad that aside from MGS4 (I'm assuming) my current library of PS3 titles is likely to never get trophy support. Here's to the future at least.

I guess I'll wait for this to come out before I start my second run of mgs 4 (I'll be getting orange box in the mail today or tomorrow, so might as well play that first)
Trophies can eat a dick. Don't y'all play games for fun and enjoyment, and not gold stars?
I view it as the equivalent of gamers trying to show off who has the biggest dick, but essentially the same idea.

Maybe some of us think that playing games to collect trophies would be both FUN and ENJOYABLE. That's not too difficult to grasp.

But to the guy who said that his game saves are now "worthless," you're being a little ridiculous. You played the game, had a great time with it, and now something is coming out now that you can revisit it with. Sony and Trophies didn't come in the night to steal your children, they just added something new on top of your games should you wish to go back and play them again. Get a grip.
was I right about the date or what?
I mean, that was a pretty wide window ;)

Your prediction rate of 50% for the last couple weeks isn't bad.

LOLOL!!!

I cant wait to earn my Monster Cock Trophy!
