The Official PS3 System Update Thread - 3.10 Available Now

It would be incredibly stupid of Sony to not require trophies in future releases, all they have to do is make it a requirement for certification.

I think going back and retroactively adding trophies to all the games in the past is a bit much but maybe they will do it for the more popular games?

I'm thinking it will be a requirement for all new games, kind of like how they now require all new games to feature rumble (since April 2008, I believe). But, it won't be for a month or so (until they can assure ALL developers have their development kits updated. I wouldn't be shocked if there were a few who didn't).

But then again, Sony's the type who doesn't like to put requirements on developers for a lot of things, since they kind of "hope" it will lead to better relations with third parties (they are many other things they don't require, but I don't want to get into it). Their idea in ways is to leave the PS3 "Open", kind of like allow a developer to use up a lot of HDD space if they want (I mean, they allowed the old Arcade game MK II to be 250MB +).
seems that only MONEY leads to better 3rd party relationships.
I think most third parties will regardless because it probably makes them more money (because they know people will buy games just to get them). The only way I could see a developer passing it up is if a competitor decided to moneyhat the developer to not do it in the PS3 version (sounds silly, but you never know).
What's the first game you're going to play and use the new features (trophies, in game msg, and custom soundtracks) on?
I never really used the custom music on the 360, and not really interested in the trophies. I really don't want in game messages either to be honest. That is one thing that drew me away from live was all these hateful messages for no reason. Only good thing is when we have cag night I can message those people instead of exiting the game which will be nice.

Thank goodness for being able to message people in game and not having to exit to see what they say. That's especially good for COD4 and Tekken DR
I oddly really hope that somehow the PSP will incorporate trophies or whatever down the line.
ohhhhh that's a nice feature for the PSP, and in game music wouldn't be a bad idea either.

Custom firmware already figured the latter out a long time ago ;)
Joystiq's coverage of this is teh biased. They are making a huge, disparaging deal over the fact that you might have to pause the game before going into xmb.
The vast majority of 360 games pause when you open the dash. So the only real difference is an extra button press. And even then they could easily patch firmware to pause it for you when you press the PS button.

if sony was smart they'd hire Dark Alex, and some other homebrew specialist and just let them make the PSP the way its supposed to be. Damn shame, Sony doesn't take notice of that.
If homebrew was official the PSP would be the greatest handheld system ever. Maybe I need to go back to Dark Alex, for psp guidance.

And the lowest software sales: hardware sales in history!
A sneaky suspicion that a lot of people will be playing SSHD, purely for the trophies sake.

I probably will.
Same
I'm gonna get all the trophies in The Orange Box on Wednesday.
I thought there were only two third party games that will actually support Trophies after the 2.4 patch comes out? Or did I miss an announcement?

Edit: Via Joystiq

* BUZZ! Quiz TV
* LittleBigPlanet
* MotorStorm Pacific Rift
* NBA 09
* PAIN**
* PixelJunk Eden
* Resistance 2
* SOCOM: Confrontation
* Super Stardust HD**
* Warhawk**

** Requires game update to install Trophies. (And requires you to play again to unlock them.)

Update: PS3 Fanboy informs us of the first two third-party games (!) confirmed to feature Trophies: BioShock and Tiki Games' self-published PSN shooter, Novastrike.

It's selling systems for Sony, but they can't have a positive attitude regarding it because then third party companies would throw a hissy fit.

It's crazy how angry people get when Sony adds in things to their console.

"Ugh! F you trophies! YOU are ruining a console I don't even own! ERGHH!!"

I think it's jealousy. I'm all for calling a company out when it makes a mistake, but when they do something good I think it's worth the praise...

Eh, but it's not that good. People are callin' them out for doing shit half-assed.

More or less. I'm amazed that people still react so harshly to saying "2.40 isn't a godsend, and its improvements in trophies are less than impressive." The PS3 doesn't need defending anymore, kids. C'mon already.
http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/06/30/firmware-v240-faq/

-No cross game invites
-No in game voice chat, text only
-In game XMB only accessible during PS3 games (not PS2 games, Blu-rays, etc)
-Can't stream music in game, has to be from the HDD
-Trophies aren't retroactive
-Can't access the web browser in game
-No sound when a trophy is unlocked (heh)
That sucks. The main thing I wanted was in game voice chat.

Ah well...maybe someday.

Nah, it's just that everyone bitches at everything. I just don't understand how something can be added and everyone is bitching like crazy...

Just play your games on whatever console you like and stop bitching about everything that comes out. I'm definitely not saying that this update is the most amazing thing ever, but how the hell can you complain about additions? I understand it should have been sooner, but just like rumble it's finally here so stop whining. You cry before getting then you smile after and go eat your cookie. And this isn't like it's the final update . . .

All I hear is, "I hate the trophy system! Ingame XMB isn't good enough! I don't want to DL PS2 games!" Let's try it first k? And yea, I do defend the PS3 because I think it's a great console and tired of the insane criticism it gets from the begging. And also this is the internets/forum.

PS3 does need more functionality, I agree, but they promise all this in Home, if that doesn't bring it then i'll be disappointed. But, I'm not an impatient bastard, I'd rather just play some games.

Scratch that last point, looks like there is gonna be a sound effect when unlocking trophies.

On a more important note, it looks like custom soundtracks won't be available for every game. It'll only work for games that get patched or that come with the feature when released.

Damn.

I didn't really know of many features when I picked up my PS3, but custom soundtracks was one feature I missed. I just want to stream my music from the PC...I don't want to put everything on the damn HDD! :bomb:
