one platinum trophy per game, received if you receive all other trophies. bronze, silver, gold no number on how many req. per game or whatever, but each are worth different values; one set value/game.

ah, that confirmed what I was expecting. From what I've read, I was expecting better, but its a good start. I wish sony didn't leave everything up to the delevopers. I would like there to be a required number of trophies (like 360's 1000 pts), mandatory game invite system and such. Hopefully the devs will try to make use of this stuff now. I think since Bioshock is said to have trphies, it will be a good gauge to cmpare it to the achievement points.

edit: I also want f*cking MKV support...
so you can't stream music from your computer in game and the in game chat is text only?... what's the point?
Well......... to read messages without having to quit your current game.
That's a big deal.

More details about the other features.
Nice options for the video fans!

Translation of the Watch Impress article:

Additionally, the way to quit games has also been modified in line with these changes, and a game can be exited by pressing the PS button during a game and selecting "Game" >> "Quit Game" from the XMB.

A new "Trophy" function has also been implemented. Games supporting this function will award trophies when pre-determined goals have been achieved in the game. The function serves as a guide for how far players have progressed thorugh a game, and progress can also be shared with friends.

On the XMB in general, added functions include a clock displayed on the XMB, a function to delete all entered text in the entry field when using text entry with a keyboard, and a function which displays an icon to indicate when operation of the PS button is disabled.

In "Users" under the XMB, an item has been added to power off the PS3 console. Under "Settings", options have been added to automatically power off after a system software update, and "assign controller", "controller vibration function" settings have been added under "accessory settings".

Under "Photos", as well as photos within a playlist becoming printable, when photos are sorted by month or year taken, an ascending and descending order option has been added.

Under "Music", a mini control panel can now be displayed while playing music, as well as "MP3 Surround" being added as a playable file type.

Under "Video", "Frame Noise Reduction" and "Block Noise Reduction" can now be configured for vidoes stored on the HDD or storage media, and upconverting output is also supported. Additionally, Blu-ray Disc upconverting, DVD Video DTS-ES and DTS 96/24 and Blu-ray Disc DTS-ES Matrix playback is supported.

Under "Internet Browser", "Search" has been added to the menu. Under the friends list, the number of friends that can be registered has been increased from 50 to 100, and the information screens of friends redesigned.

This was sent to me by a professional Japanese>English translator.

Depends on what games are patched to support trophies. Hopefully MGS4 will be patched or already is so I can play that again.

but is it that hard for them to add in-game voice chat?

Yes. It took them this long to just get in-game XMB in there, so all of the extra stuff will come later as they build on to what you can do with in-game XMB.

so any time rumored to when it'll be available to dowlad, midnight, midnight eeastern time, or what? Or will it be like the store update, sometime that day?
Any ETA on when the upgrade will be released tomorrow?
Based on Sony I would say from 11 AM-9 PM
but is it that hard for them to add in-game voice chat?
Well, let's just say implementing voicechat can be tricky. It's not that it's hard, it's that you want to make it where it doesn't use much bandwidth. I mean, some games with voicechat, the lag greatly increases while being used due to sloppy software (like Tekken 5: DR Online) and some games it barely makes a difference. The trick is to minimize the amount of memory used when implementing it.

I've said this over and over again, the entire reason it took a while to get in-game XMB was because the XMB itself originally used up more memory than what was reserved for the XMB. One HUGE flaw with the PS3 is lack of RAM, since it's technically only 256MB main (with a portion reserved for the OS) while Xbox 360 is 512MB (PS3 has 256MB for the GPU also, but many devs who do multi-platform games prefer a more unified memory, which is why Sony couldn't just reserve more memory for the OS in-game). The ONLY way PS3 would have been able to have in in-game XMB early on is if they were able to reduce the amount of memory used right from the beginning to a lower amount (And due to Sony's software inexperience, they just couldn't do it), or if PS3 at LEAST had 512MB of main memory or more RIGHT from the get go). Every firmware update reduced the amount of memory used by the XMB (which explains why every firmware in size continues to get smaller). And since they've finally reduced it enough to allow the XMB in-game, that's why we are now getting it. Originally, JUST the friends list and Keyboard alone used up 29MB of memory, which is more OS memory than the 360 uses in-game.

Right now, my serious guess is voicechat cannot technically be implemented in-game right now UNTIL the XMB reduces in memory even more. Also, Sony has to work more on the chat because early on, it was near impossible to have a stable chat with friends (it used up WAY too much bandwidth). It's gotten better now, but it still needs to be re-fined where it doesn't use as much bandwidth. MS has been working with VOIP software along with multi-tasking OS software forever, which explains why they can easily get many features and such little space (MS also knows all the compression techniques).

Everyone just needs to understand, MS will ALWAYS be ahead on Sony when it comes to software. PS3 will NEVER do everything 360 does (and there are certain things 360 will never do that PS3 will have). It just comes down to Sony having the hardware expertise (Sony is going to 65nm RSX this year and went 65nm Cell last year. It took MS a YEAR longer to get there, compared to Sony (when you compare when the consoles launched), and the PS3 has a superb hardware design.

If Sony could have easily have given us in-game XMB before, they would have, no doubt. People really wanted wallpapers, so Sony gave them in 1.9. People wanted folder support, so Sony gave them in 2.0. However, those were features that could easily be implemented because it wasn't like you were trying to cram an entire XMB within limited space (I don't remember the actual numbers, but I believe Sony had like 70MB reserved for the OS initially, and reduced it to 54MB or something, I dunno. Let's just say the XMB early used up 90MB and the amount reserved for in-game was 70MB (these numbers aren't real, but an example). Since the XMB used up more memory than the reserved amount of memory within a game, that's why it could not be done. There's no denying PS3 is powerful, the lack of ram hinders what PS3 can really do unless a game is designed from the ground up on PS3 (since the RAM is split on the PS3, not unified).

I'm sort of underwhelmed at this point. I updated and initially it said I didn't have the correct hard drive (what does that mean?) but after restarting it was fine. Updating SSHD took forever (and 3 tries). It's the only game I have that supports trophies too.

The functionality of the in-game XMB is extremely limited right now. Under system settings, accessories is the only thing you can access. You can't even look at your save/game data. You can message people, that's fine. But...I can't send pics through those messages. You can however access folding at home while in-game to crash your system (I haven't done this, but I've been told you can do it).

It's the step Sony needed, hopefully everything else falls in line soon after. I don't know about what Mana Knight said about the OS being 256mb for the OS. I thought that was reduced by nearly half since the PS3 came out. I hope 2.50 brings in-game chat and cross-game invites. I also hope MGS4, DMC4, Ratchet and Folklore get trophy support in the future.

2.4 FTW...

I just want Ratchet, Uncharted and MGS to support Trophies. I'm completely ready to beat those games again for some Trophy goodness.

only comlant is that its jst the are minumum that would be acceptable. Worst problem, you cant do most of the functions in the xmb while in a game. Also im-gam xmb doesn;t work when in internet browser... weak. I hope they get on the trophy updates, I have none that support them ( all 2 of 'em). IDk, i uess we should be grateful that we got this, but I am very underwhelmed at this point.

I really like the PS3's gamercard equivalent, it looks pretty slick. We just need to be able to access it online from our computers like you can from the 360.

I'm pretty impressed with how PSN is shaping up though, you know considering it's free and all. Hell of a lot better than anything the Wii is doing.

I have to press triangle now to send a message to people. Before I could just click to view messages. Now it views their profile.

OT - Anyone know how I can change the account that is associated to a PS3? I borrowed a retail PS3 from work and I cannot seem to get my PSN account to work. The account of a former colleague keeps popping up and I can't get rid of it.

Sorry about the OT post. I figured you guys would be the best source of assistance.

A few minor annoyances/problems, but otherwise it is great!

Edit- You hve to create a new account, but within that there is an option to link it to an existing account. Try that.
You can pull up the XMB while in a browser.
yeah, you can, but you have to exit the browser if you want to access a friend's profile and so on.

What is everyone's icon on the regular XMB (not in-game) for Trophies and the Internet Search. For me, they're both question marks. For in-game, Trophies is the trophy (I haven't checked the internet search though).

EDIT: Nevermind, I found out that because I'm using the non-original PS3 theme, it comes up like that for both. How annoying.

I'm liking the trophies a lot so far. Got to lvl 2 with 11/17 SSHD trophies, so I'm looking forward to seeing more games get updated with trophies and trying to level up.

In-game XMB's pretty much just as advertised for me (having access to the XMB), so it'll be nice to see the more advanced stuff become unlocked in future updates.

I have 8/17 trophies on SSHD (finally beat Somona). I don't have the add-on pack though, so 8/12 I guess. I was so close to 10x multiplier too, but the game kills me despite me firing off a bomb a second before >_<

Question though. Should I be worried that despite buying Super Stardust HD (I bought it from the demo) that it doesn't show up that I bought it on the PS Store?

Info on Warhawk's trophy support (aka massive support):
Hey Everyone!

Sorry I've been MIA -- we have been just cranking on our new updates for all of you; the v1.4 Patch, the v1.5 Patch and yes...our next booster pack.

The team and I have been watching the internets light up with discussions about the trophies in 240 and we thought it was good idea that you got an update straight from the horses mouth...me being the horse I guess :)

So...YES, hot trophy action for Warhawk is on the horizon!

Since Warhawk released almost a year ago now, we will be patching-in support for the new trophy system. The reason I mention this is because there has been some talk about Warhawk trophies super-auto-magically going LIVE late tonight when the firmware is released. This is not the case. I know the press release stated that Warhawk trophies were going to be patched-in, but I just wanted to clarify for everyone.

We are right on the cusp of making some big announcements for Warhawk, including our upcoming patches and new booster-pack and while I can't talk about any of those right now (you will need to wait like a week or so) I can talk a bit about our trophy support in the v1.5 patch.

First off, there are 56 trophies included in the Warhawk v1.5 Patch. These are broken down into a couple of categories:

 • There are 10 trophies based on the Warhawk's current stats/rank/awards system. Like getting all your Bronze badges, attaining a specific rank, or earning a number of medals.
 • There are 34 trophies that are entirely *new* rewards based on Warhawks core game and not based on our current stats, ranks or other awards.
 • There are then 4 trophies per booster pack that are, of course, completely new awards.

Developing 56 new trophies was a really fun part of the v1.5 production cycle...but 10 of them are based on stats and awards that you, our community may have already earned -- so that's why we made sure that those 10 trophies based on our core stats system would be paid out retroactively. Meaning, that once the v1.5 patch is released, and if you've already earned the requirements for those trophies *bling*bling*bling* Warhawk will pay them out to you!

Lastly, cause I know everyone will be asking the obvious question, when is the v1.5 Patch coming out...we haven't even *officially* announced the v1.4 Patch!!!???

All I am allowed to say is that the v1.4 Patch is very, very, very close to being released and we actually developed the v1.5 Patch in parallel, but staggered, with the v1.4 Patch. The reason we did this is because there are stuffs in the v1.4 Patch that we wanted to get out to everyone ASAP...but the v1.5 patch isn't that far behind!

Hopefully that clears things up!
Nice. Gonna check it out now...and maybe download Super Stardust (I'm sure I won't be alone in that).
I know your not because im doing the same thing

In-game XMB is very nice - I'll enjoy what is there and hope that cross-game invites come down the road.

Trophies are what they are; I'm a bit let down that there are some trophies that I can't access unless I drop $5 twice over for each of the SSHD expansion packs. So I can't earn my "platinum" trophy unless I buy all the piecemeal stuff for a game? Boo.

Cute, though. I went for a trophy, then hopped on my XMB and messaged Frisky to let him know he's a trophy whore.

Kidding, of course.

It's the same with the achievements, too. It sucks seeing a 1250 total for a 360 game I'll never bother buying DLC for.

SSHD's trophies only cover the first add-on, as the other isn't technically out yet though, but maybe it's ready to finally come out this week.

Myke, there is no Platinum trophy for SSHD.
Sony said no such trophies for small PSN games.

I like the update, everything works well. Got 3 trophies and quit.

Also, most games DO pause when you hit the PS Button.

How come I can play a custom soundtrack in PixelJunk Monsters? Did I do something wrong? I turned Background Music all the way down, and tried to play music from the XMB. It gave me the usual denied message. I thought this was the ONE game it was SUPPOSED to work in???

He was just demonstrating the potentila in that vid. 2.4 allows for the possibility of custom music, but currently there are no games that support it yet. It'll be like trophies, it'll get patched in as needed although I see it happening less than say trophies.
