I rarely use facebook. It seems pointless, but I'm glad ps3 users is getting the same features as the 360 users.
So what you're saying is that you're glad that Sony is copying Microsoft? :applause: At least you admitted it, that Sony is playing catch up and giving some people what they think they want.
So what you're saying is that you're glad that Sony is copying Microsoft? :applause: At least you admitted it, that Sony is playing catch up and giving some people what they think they want.
I never said that. I don't care about facebook or any of it. I just said I'm glad both is getting it. They copy each other all the time. We all know it. Why should it be any different now? Microsoft played catch up and copied ps3 when they had there little price drop. I fail to see your point. You don't even have a 360 tag listed. So why are you defending them?

i know absolutly nothing about the PS3 since i only used it as a Blu-ray player. That is until i got the last update and it no longer works...any talk of this update possibly fixing that?

I have 60GB and it is just a large black paperweight at the moment:cry:

Wait so what's going on in this newest update? I tried to find some info on it, but all I found was about 30 pages of some comments on Facebook and some 7 month old rants by some Thrill Kill guy.
What it comes down to...

A PC does not require you to update the OS in order to use it online, you can still use windows 95 on DSL if you choose to do so. SONY is requiring updates to use the PSN and they are not covering the repair of damage to consoles from the update.

I have to side with IATCG on this one. This is coming from a SONY fanboy who was a member of the underground and GAP (gamer advisory panel by SONY invite only). They should have an option to use the PSN without the latest upgrades (especially if there are known issues with the updates).
Do you need to upadte to use the internet browser on the ps3?
The idea of a backup is in case something goes wrong. If something goes wrong then you need to exchange the PS3. As far as I know the HDD and backup won't simply install to a new system, or maybe just not the locked content. Either way it kinda defeats the purpose.
No, Backup is also for exchanging your system to another hard drive, as I think I mentioned. I don't know about locked content not coming over in the backup, all of my DLC and savegames worked after the backup (transfer?). Not sure if any of it is locked, unless by locked you mean can't be put on a USB and sent to another system that way.

I'd rather functions stayed on the PC. That's where my files are and I know how to use the programs. Throwing them on the PS3 is redundant. It'll never be a PC replacement.
Agreed for some things. I'm still a big PC guy. What I never liked is having to watch DIVXs from my PC monitor when I have a perfectly awesome HDTV. I tried hooking up my vidcard to the HDTV, but meh, not worth the hassle. Hence the PS3's usefulness.

Um, I wouldn't want to. I buy consoles to play games, that's all. I never had a DVD in my PS2 and I won't have a BR in the PS3. I'm glad Nin doesn't bother adding fluff to the console. Furthermore what I buy is for myself. No need to ask permission or beg (which is kinda sad if you need to).

Then stick to the PS2 as I suggested to Cheapest. Huge backlog of stuff, no need to update. What's this, the Wii has no fluff? Web browser, picture channel, We Vote, etc. All that plus forced updates, just like all current-gen consoles.
Nice that you buy for yourself, don't get married is all I can say if you like that lifestyle ;) Really, more and more gamers are married people with kids, not every gamer dwells in their parent's basement  and many of us like consoles with "fluff"

I do. I was always against consoles becoming more like PC's because of just such problems. Updates, half-finished 'patch later' games, online problems, HDD's and corrupt data, etc. It's not about being used to it, I just didn't want the same crap to happen and now it's too late. People quit using the PC because of these headaches so where do we go from here?
I hear you, but the PS3 forces updates to prevent the PC's biggest weaknesses: piracy and compatibility, plain and simple. Their console, their rules. If people like you and Cheapest don't like it, honestly, just sell your consoles. Sony will never make exceptions if they feel it will open their console up to pirates, and they can't guarantee a proper gameplay experience if everyone has a different firmware.
So what you're saying is that you're glad that Sony is copying Microsoft? :applause: At least you admitted it, that Sony is playing catch up and giving some people what they think they want.
They're nothing alike. Microsoft is straight up check your facebook which you've been able to do since day 1 on ps3 using the browser. The ps3 facebook integration is to send updates automatically when you do something. Plus you don't have to spend an extra 50 bucks a year.
You mean 15 divided by 5. ;)

I rarely use facebook. It seems pointless, but I'm glad ps3 users is getting the same features as the 360 users.
Yes, that is more accurate

What it comes down to is you can use your old OS to surf the internet, just like you can use your old console to play games. There's a ton of modern apps and games you can't do on Win95, there's a ton of modern games you can't play on the PS2. Besides hype, what are the real numbers on people with console failure after updating?
Considering the fact that if I tried to sell my PS3, I'd probably get 1/3 of what I paid, I'm going to hold off on doing that just yet. But if I knew I could put it up for sale and get nearly 100% of what I've put out to buy it, then I might consider it.

As for 'all of you loving Facebook', see my prior statement to that effect.
Here's an idea: It came in a box. Stop playing it, store it in that box and help it keep more of its value. I have yet to hear of many consoles that get anywhere near 100% return upon trade or sale unless they're rare. Economics just don't work that way in the Real World. And the Facebook comment was a joke, I don't even have it.

I read locked stuff won't work on anything but this PS3. The most notable being RB2 and my DLC.

Well I don't have HD and I don't DL movies so this isn't an issue.

Honestly, with a collection around 130 I think I've played all I wanted to on PS2. The Wii has less fluff, and they give you an option to DL or not. I also have plenty of games there and may have been asked once to update. That's more reasonable than PS3's weekly BS.

Why do people say that? Marriage is not in the plans but I assure you I don't live in a basement... However I don't understand why that would stop you from purchasing things you like.

Pirates will get through eventually. That's inevitable. Yet it doesn't make any sense for Sony to abandon millions of users through updates to add senseless things that clearly have no relation to gaming or piracy protection.

Actually, since the 60 is the best and most complete model the price has stayed consistent from what I've seen. If you want BC there aren't many other options.

 @ Nintendo not adding fluff to the Wii. It's all over the system with the photo, news, weather, voting, and internet channels. You are forced to download and install updates to get into the Wii Shop Channel, so they're not the perfect company you make them out to be.

I highly doubt that there are millions of people that refuse to update the system because they fear/hate the same things you do.

AFAIK 360 FB integration doesn't include the ability to sync achievements to FB. At least that's what was said in destructoid. So that's a shocker, Sony may have something better on PSN than XBL (for now).

I wish they'd start innovating instead of immitating tho (Home doesn't count, it's lame).

That's because I don't own a 360 and don't want one really. As for 'defending' them, I don't buy into the fanboy bullshit. I buy game systems to PLAY GAMES and as long as they do that and do it reliably I don't care really what else they do.

But all of these useless fuckin' updates on PS3 are totally stupid. At least if they gave you the ability to delete some of the extra crap they download to your system that you don't want or uncheck those items before the download of the FW starts I wouldn't have so much of a problem with the updates.

Of course, if they did that, the updates would probably take 5 minutes and not annoy the shit outta me.

Telling me to 'sell my system' because I don't like what the company is doing with these stupid updates and LOSE money isn't ever going to be an option for me. I buy these systems to PLAY GAMES. Period. Shove Facebook, picture albums, etc, etc up your ass, Sony.
Lots of bitching from today from IATCG. Guess that means the update is live.
Bitching? Because I can't use 99% of the crap Sony decides to put in these updates, it's bitching?

Now if they put in a section on the Playstation video store where I could download and share "2 Girls, 1 Cup" with unsuspecting PSN friends, THAT would be a useful addition.:D:lol:

I thought the same thing. It's funny how you can tell it's coming near or already here when you hear the crys of SLOW DOWNLOAD SPEED, USELESS! But it's his own damn fault he's using internet from 1999.

Excuse me for being a true cheapass and only getting the internet speed I need for what I use it for the bulk of the time(surfing the internet).

But if cable internet drops to $20 a month, I'll gladly' upgrade to that, but $40 a month for internet is a stupid price to pay for what I use it for.

I was wondering when you would show up though, Paco. Now that the gangs all here, let's get the Sony lovefest going full swing.

Yeah, bitching. You got zeal, hombre. But that doesn't change that them's the facts.

unless you get one of those combo deals where you get cable tv, phone service and internet all in one. alot of companies are doing that now and you can get decent package deals that save you money over time. its alot cheaper to get them all in one package than to get one one place and then another another place.
I read locked stuff won't work on anything but this PS3. The most notable being RB2 and my DLC.
Ask around CAG, someone may have a workaround. My RB1 stuff transferred AFAIK, but I don't know if it's as locked as RB2, sorry.

The Wii has less fluff, and they give you an option to DL or not. I also have plenty of games there and may have been asked once to update. That's more reasonable than PS3's weekly BS.
You made a clear "it has no fluff" statement, why backtrack? Fluff is fluff, it's got crap comparable to the PS3 and XBox, 'nuff said. You definitely need to update to play its (tiny) catalogue of online games, and I'm sure you've been notified more than once to update. But obviously not as much as Sony's weekly  update schedule

Why do people say that? Marriage is not in the plans but I assure you I don't live in a basement... However I don't understand why that would stop you from purchasing things you like.
You obviously don't understand how marriage works. Neither do I for that matter, for reasons different than yours.
The basement comment was more a response to you suggesting married men need to beg. Well, not for a console at least...

Pirates will get through eventually. That's inevitable. Yet it doesn't make any sense for Sony to abandon millions of users through updates to add senseless things that clearly have no relation to gaming or piracy protection.
You assume there's no protection/updating going on behind the scenes. Also, I don't feel abandoned because, well, they keep updating the fucking firmware! What better sign of support for the console do you need? When Sony stops updating the firmware, then I know the console's dead. How many (real) millions would bitch then?
The console's been out for almost 5 years and no signs of rampant piracy yet. I'd say the constant firmwares and control over updates is working pretty well.

Haha, no, I'm not telling you, I'm not your mom. But as far as I can tell, the completed updates haven't hindered you from playing a single game. Also, what price sanity, Cheapest? The way you carry on about updates this is either some sort of Cheapest therapy, or the mental anguish it's causing will take years off your life.

You take all this too seriously. Why not get a hobby to use up your idle time? I hear Sony has a really nice gaming console... :whistle2:\"

No. But the updates have taken time that I could've spent gaming and not staring at the 'now downloading' screen.

Thing is, even if they made the updates able to be downloaded in the background, that'd be fine with me too. But instead you either have to find something to watch on tv(most is shit anymore) or do something else till the fuckin' thing downloads.

As for it 'taking years off my life', you think I take this far too seriously, but you're wrong.

Someone has already mentioned that you can start the update and WALK AWAY while it downloads, thus, not wasting time.

But see, when I usually get on my PS3 it's to PLAY A GAME, not go 'oh great another fuckin' long ass update' and leave it to download while I go off and do something else.

I value my gaming time, so I wish Sony would give me it back.:bomb:

Get on your PC, go to playstation.com, download firmware. Go to sleep. The next day, put the firmware download on a USB drive, and use it to update the PS3.

Problem solved.

Let the PS3 love-fest commence! LOL

Ah firmware... You make me so firm. Oh how I love you...

But that's an extra step....or two...I'm lazy.

Cheapeast, I thought of you when I turned on my 360 to play Trials over the weekend and I had to download multiple updates to play it (Since signing in apparantly is mandatory). It was annoying, but ya know what? I grabbed my PSP and played some pixeljunk monsters in the mean time and life went on.

But that's the thing though, I don't have(or want) another console or handheld or to do anything else when I go play a game because when I go to turn on my system I turn it on because I want to PLAY it.

If Sony would do the following, I'd be happy:

*allow us to pick and choose what stuff we download(outside of the actual bug fixes/firmware)
*allow us to delete extra crap they've had us download prior that we don't want or haven't used
*allow the FW update to download in the fuckin' background so we can play a game WHILE it downloads
*allow us to get on PSN even if we decide not to download the update that second

I could actually look past the first two, if they would just allow the background downloading of FW updates or allowing us onto PSN before downloading the update.

@cheapest,

I am a programmer myself, and my guess is that allowing the a la carte features, that you mentioned, would be a huge testing nightmare for both Sony and game devs. They would have to figure out, and code around, all the possible combinations of features that you may have or not have.

That is my guess anyway. I'm sure there is a good reason why you cannot get on PSN w/o the upgrade. There could possibly be vulnerabilities that could allow people to exploit them and possibly do much damage to you and/or Sony.

I agree w/you about the background downloading tho.

Anyone know if there is a way to limit who can see the PS3 facebook posts? I would like my friends who actually own PS3s to see it, but not my other friends who don't even know what a PS3 is.

Somebody asked about the numbers.

The last total of dead ps3s with user ids on the USA forums is 367. Keep in mind that is only people who are registered users who are willing to state their ps3 is dead since 3.0.

In Australia Sony is replacing the bricked consoles free of charge because of the new batch of problems.

I am not trying to start a debate, I am just providing the latest "data".

IATCG isn't looking for a solution, he's just looking to bitch. Stuff he's mentioned is all actually optional, if you don't click on home it'll never download. Same goes for that photo program, life with playstation, or any optional thing they add in the future. All the update adds is a icon to the xmb. IATCG makes the worst arguments because all he says is "I don't want that". He never acknowledges that other people exist. By his logic I'm angry at Sony that they wont brick the disk reader because I never want to run another disk and wont use that feature.

Actually, I was talking about the photo album thing itself, since most of the time the pics anyone sends me are junk anyway.

But yes, I am complaining about them adding useless icons that I'll never use.

As for other people existing, great, you guys can download all of this useless shit. Give me the bug fixes/patches and shove the Facebook/etc/etc/ icons up your ass, Sony. Don't clutter my GAME systems XMB with shit I won't use but have to stare at forever.

That explains why he complains so much. It really doesn't take me long. Maybe around 10 mins on PS3. If I downloaded it on pc, and put it on a memory stick its even a shorter amount of time than that. Complaining about it really solves nothing. He really should just suck it up, and let it download while he does something else or get faster internet.

Seriously, can we please limit discussion to the content of the updates, not the merit of requiring updates to use PSN. If you want to debate about that, create a new thread so that this one doesn't get cluttered with that

Let it go... Even on 360 you can't play a game during. Although it doesn't take 30 seconds usually. That's beside the point! You post a lot. Shouldn't you be playing games instead =P

Dashboard updates take 10-20 minutes now for me, which has been the case since NXE launched.

Wow, I usually get updates in under a minute on the 360. The PSN updates take forever and I don't even understand why, as half the time we can't see the new features added. I've got to start doing that whole PC thing, though, it'd save me a lot of time.

yeah, we know that the PSN updates are slow... horribly slow. However, for those that actually, DL'd the update, how is it... anygood? Did it freeze the system... any issues / concerns?
