No, Backup is also for exchanging your system to another hard drive, as I think I mentioned. I don't know about locked content not coming over in the backup, all of my DLC and savegames worked after the backup (transfer?). Not sure if any of it is locked, unless by locked you mean can't be put on a USB and sent to another system that way.
Agreed for some things. I'm still a big PC guy. What I never liked is having to watch DIVXs from my PC monitor when I have a perfectly awesome HDTV. I tried hooking up my vidcard to the HDTV, but meh, not worth the hassle. Hence the PS3's usefulness.
Then stick to the PS2 as I suggested to Cheapest. Huge backlog of stuff, no need to update. What's this, the Wii has no fluff? Web browser, picture channel, We Vote, etc. All that plus forced updates, just like all current-gen consoles.
Nice that you buy for yourself, don't get married is all I can say if you like that lifestyle

Really, more and more gamers are married people with kids, not every gamer dwells in their parent's basement  and many of us like consoles with "fluff"
I hear you, but the PS3 forces updates to prevent the PC's biggest weaknesses: piracy and compatibility, plain and simple. Their console, their rules. If people like you and Cheapest don't like it, honestly, just sell your consoles. Sony will never make exceptions if they feel it will open their console up to pirates, and they can't guarantee a proper gameplay experience if everyone has a different firmware.
I read locked stuff won't work on anything but this PS3. The most notable being RB2 and my DLC.
Well I don't have HD and I don't DL movies so this isn't an issue.
Honestly, with a collection around 130 I think I've played all I wanted to on PS2. The Wii has less fluff, and they give you an option to DL or not. I also have plenty of games there and may have been asked once to update. That's more reasonable than PS3's weekly BS.
Why do people say that? Marriage is not in the plans but I assure you I don't live in a basement... However I don't understand why that would stop you from purchasing things you like.
Pirates will get through eventually. That's inevitable. Yet it doesn't make any sense for Sony to abandon millions of users through updates to add senseless things that clearly have no relation to gaming or piracy protection.
