C'mon people, wouldn't you rather have a firmware update than have to buy a new console?!

Granted they're not doing anything spectacular with this update, but many of you people had a cow over the color of the friends list. They fixed it and now you're having a cow that they fixed it? This update is safe, start the download on your PC and play games locally until it's finished.

Sony needs a changelog to show all the hidden stuff that's in there that you we don't know about (i.e., security fixes, bug fixes, etc.). At least they're supporting the system with regular updates instead of letting the thing rot.
Usually when I pop on it's ONLY to play online, so that 'play locally till it's done' crap is ridiculous. What Sony SHOULD do is allow you to click off on the update till you wanna do it and still allow you on PSN till then. Sony is just lucky I popped on yesterday afternoon to check messages and the update didn't take 90 years to complete.

They need to show all of the supposed 'fixes' they're putting in the updates. Of course, if they did that and the updates were just the fluff items like the FB icon and other crap they've been adding, then I'd really have to take issue with being forced to update to the new FW in the first place.

As for the temp gauge thing, I think the PS3 does need one of those, since my old fatty PS3 used to be able to warm my room up at least 5-10 degrees to where it was noticably warmer after having played it. The slim isn't much better either, as it still gets alarmingly warm sometimes on the top of the case and in the back by the fan and that's with even having it out in the open and up off the floor.

Background updates would be dope ^_^

Like windows, it'll DL the update then let you know it's ready to be installed.

The one thing I do hate is it not letting you on PSN until you update, that just sucks =/
I think you are exaggerating...A spaceheater wont even heat up a room 10degrees..Unless you live in a closet
How did I know someone was going to say 'you're full of shit'. You don't think the PS3 throws out a ton of heat? Try putting and keeping your hand behind it when the fans really kick on and see if it doesn't get sweaty after a few minutes back there. The thing is like a mini space heater.

My room upstairs where I used to play it was tiny. Not 'closet' tiny, but small enough that you DID notice a difference in the temperature after playing the PS3 for 30-45 minutes.

Of course, it was most noticable in the wintertime, when the heat was on a semi tolerable 70* for the rest of the house and it felt like 80* in my room.

I never said the PS3 isnt hot...My HDMI port gets so hot you cant even touch it. But ten degrees? Yes you are full of shit..Maybe 3-4 degrees
I never said the PS3 isnt hot...My HDMI port gets so hot you cant even touch it. But ten degrees? Yes you are full of shit..Maybe 3-4 degrees
When I'm actually warm enough I'm starting to sweat inside the house in the wintertime in the Northeast, I beg to differ.

But hey....whatever. You believe what you want and I'll believe what I want. To me, the PS3 would make a hell of a heater if it ever failed to amuse me anymore as a gaming console.:D

I think I read a reply, on the PS blog from Sony, to someone asking for background downloads; the blog OP replied and said it's a good idea, they'll look into it. We'll see. But d/l to USB from your PC is effectively a "background download" since it isn't tying up your machine for 7.5 minutes.

Convenience is key. It would be very effective if you could solve it all with the console itself, not relying on other components (USB drive, etc..) to keep the PS3 up-to-date and so on.

Also, I'm assuming that a lot of people don't even know you can just DL the update off the official website, and then consider how many of those people might not even have an external storage device.

Consider the time spent booting up, logging in, go to the site and DL the update, save it to a storage device, then transfer it to the PS3 to install. You could spend all that time playing a game or something on the PS3 while it DL's the update in the background.

My post is a little longwinded now :(, but basically gives us more convenient options when it comes to updating the PS3 and don't lock us out of PSN just because of it too!!!

I dunno, maybe I would rather a new console instead of an update that breaks everything.

You're right about the heat. I do the same thing. If I close the door with the PC, TV, a console, and whatever lights I'm using turned on I can notice a difference too. In the summer I try to use the PC less so it's not as hot in here at night. I guess the rest of you don't pay attention to the heat your devices put out. It may not be hot, but the warmth of several items adds up.

You have only the PS3 running? Not a big HDTV (which produces a lot of heat) and a audio receiver (which produces heat?) Because in the winter when my house is called, my bedroom is warm when I have all these things running. I'm not sure the PS3 could do it by itself, though.

I have a 20" SDtv I play on, which doesn't produce too much heat and I use the standard tv speakers for sound. Like I've said before(and my name on CAG denotes), I AM THE CHEAPEST GAMER.

I wasn't about to shell out $1k+ for a new tv or sound system for the PS3.

Just wondering since your the cheapest gamer. How much did you get your PS3 for?

My current slim or my old fatty that I traded into GS for $150?

I paid $200 for the fatty(using cheap credit. though I really paid the full $400 for it, but most was cheap credit) and about $50 out og pocket for the slim after fatty and game trades.

My launch 60 GB doesn't run that hot. When it's cold (around 60 in the house), the fans only kick on periodically, and for short bursts. Doesn't really heat up the house, either. Which is strange, as almost everything I've ever read states that it runs hot and loud. I guess vacuuming out the dust periodically keeps it running better? I do have it stationed in a wide and open area, too.

I wish the PS3 would heat up the apartment. The TV is probably what is heating up the place more than the system. I shall test this theory out since it is like 5 degree here.

I have mine on a wooden table up off the floor and well ventilated on all sides. Both my fat and slim models get pretty loud after 30 minutes. Then again, it could be since I sit so close(less than 3 feet from it) to it that it seems so loud.

My whole point is that you exaggerate EVERYTHING!! 1k for a tv & Sound?? Bullshit. I got both for $450. 10 degrees warmer from a PS3? Bullshit. Half hour to download firmware? Probably more bullshit. You exaggerate every post on here while you bitch

Good for you, Mr. Perfect. But I know from what I've experienced that the temperature does get significantly warmer in my room after I've played the PS3 for a while and I know how long it typically takes for firmware to download on my system(and my '1999 high speed', as some have called it).

As for the 1k for a tv and sound, I could care less. I'm using my current tv till it's 100% broken and by then hopefully the gouging assholes will have finally dropped smaller LCD prices to UNDER $200 for a 20-26" one(without having to do some bullshit rebates and jump through hoops). Of course, I know you(and some others) will point out 'zomg deals' where the LCD's are already that price.

If not, then I buy a used SDtv for $30 and continue gaming on that.

Well this is not good... Now I'm starting to have the sync issues with all of my controllers (I have one Dualshock and two SIXAXIS) It's weird, I can hold down the PS button to turn on the system but all four lights just blink on the controller. It will sync once I plug it into the console (120GB slim) but as soon as I unplug it the controller de-syncs again.

EDIT: I had to hold down the power button and get it to re-detect my video setting to fix the problem.

I was only half joking about the temp guage, but now that I think of it don't computers have these? Wouldn't mind a warning when my components are getting over worked. The idea is a little odd though isn't it? But this is a different age of electronics so the more info on whats going on inside the better.

And yeah... my room gets warmer too with the PS3 on. I feel the temp change as I come into the hallway after opening my door. It is a decent sized room but I guess the circulation is bad or something.

Might get a thermometer and check it out it against the AC control in the hall, just to satisfy curiosity.

I just had the controller sync issue again and after shutting down and restarting the system again it's resolved itself again.

Hopefully, this issue isn't ongoing.

Same problem here but only on my slim, my 60 has had no problems after the update. Happened on Friday and again this morning.

So, you were able to completely resolve your controller sync issues by holding the reset button on the console, Chitown?

I've had to shut off the console and restart to get it to resolve temporarily, but it seems to come back every other day.

Wal-Mart has 19" Vizios for like $150. 720p.

EDIT: Ha, posted that before I read the last sentence.

Haven't had problems syncing my controllers to the system. If my system freezes while on the internet I occasionally have that problem. It's nothing new for me, though.

But I'm looking for a 20" up to a 26" for when I might need to replace my tv and for those extra 1-7" the price shoots up into the ridiculous range.

I can find 19" HDtvs all day and night myself and I've even been considering a 20" LCD monitor that's full HD for $189 from Target and NewEgg, but not till I need one though.

But thanks nonetheless.

So far so good. I downloaded the update the night it was released and this is the first time I've had a problem with it.

I just fired my system up after having it off for an hour or so and no sync problems.

Does the 360 have this much trouble with firmware updates? I'm all for updates that add new features and functionality but not if it's going to break my console!

Has Sony just rushed these last few updates out or something?

Alright. I tried holding the reset button when turning on my console via it and for now that seems to have resolved my sync issues.

Of course, I shouldn't brag so soon, since I know my luck and the next time I go to turn it on via the controller it's going to be fucked up again.

I hate Error 80022A07

Has anyone figured out what to do? From what some people told me is that you have to keep syncing and eventually it works :(

oh well...this update did not fix my freezing problem from the previous updates on my 60 GB...i had my hopes up but then 12 minutes into the Star Trek Bluray it froze. Not a single problem until 3.00...might have to just sell it and be done with it

Hey guys, I was listening to the PS Nation podcast and one of the guys on there was talking about doing some kind of defrag on the PS3 to fix some of the freezing issues.
He said that you hold the power button until it beeps 3 times, keep holding the system will reboot, it will beep 3 more times, then you quit holding the power. The system should go into the service menu. He said one of the options (perhaps the 3rd one) does the defrag.

If you want to try that, make sure you look up how to actually do it, this is just what that guy said, so I don't know if it is how it's really done.

I've had issues like this from time to time even before the update. I think my problems come from the Logitech ps3 adaptor. I've always been able to solve it by plugging the controller into the ps3 with a usb cable then when the lights stop blinking and it assigns the controller a slot, I use a paper clip to push the reset button on the underside of the controller. This will turn the controller off. Push the ps button on the controller and wait for it to reassign it to a slot again. then when you unplug the usb cable it will blink for a couple seconds but should sync right up.

You know now that you mention it when I was rebooting my system to solve my sync issues I got that menu to pop up. There were about 7 different options but I don't remember what all of them were.

I had the same problem after 3.0 , I haven't tried it yet with 3.1 .

I'm probably crazy for saying this, but I REALLY like the color palette idea as well as the thin border around friends I'm not highlighting. It might just because it's not this blockade of gray on my XMB like it used to be.

Facebook integration...Trophy stuff works (Trophy sync errors up the but, though).

Whenever I turn on my PS3 now and 4-6 of my friends who changed their color are on I feel like I'm in a fuckin' gay pride parade.

The colors available really suck ass.
I feel like I'm in a fuckin' gay pride parade.
Don't worry, we won't judge you for it.

And on-topic, I did the 3.1 update with no troubles. It took 10 minutes to download on my slow DSL connection, and I haven't had any problems since.

well, no luck after reformatting the drive...so weird that it powers up fine, plays regular DVDs fine, but will freeze in about 10 mins or so on Blurays...unfortunetly i cant try games on it since i dont have any anymore.

Looks like i may try to trade it in to gamestop for $145, such a shame for a 60 gb, i was hoping it would be my bluray player for years with an occasional game or two played

Well, it would appear that my sync issues since 3.10 are back. I just tried turning on my system via the controller and when it came time to log into one of my two accounts the four lights on the top of the controller were STILL fuckin' flashing.

This sucks. Leave it up to Sony to fuck up their own machine.

My system has been fine (knock on wood) since I fixed it on Saturday. I played a little R&C before work this morning. I haven't tried any Bluray movies on it since 3.1 though...
