The Orange Box - Out Now
That almost kills it for me :(
Keep in mind that the actualy text of the review says that the slowdown is in a very few random spots. It is not a regular occurance.

Thanks, possum. This is one of those cases where I'd trade gamerscore for lower price and better overall performance/controls. We'll see if my CC gets any in today...

damnit 360 version keeps sounding worse and worse..my comp can handle hl2 cs source and dod source fine on high settings etc but my main problem is my computer keeps freezing and if i can get my computer to work its random when i load a game in steam if the game will work or not :cold:

sigh i'll still prolly end up getting the 360 version though...
i cant figure out why my comp is freezing anway ive scanned multiple times for viruses and nothing came up and the only thing i can possibly think of at this point is its overheating but i cant even check that >

Yeah, the part about the Xbox 360 version being a Xbox port is a downer for me (because I own the Xbox version of the game). I will wait for a price drop.

It's just the original Half-Life 2 part that is a Xbox port on the 360, not the other 4 games. So if you have merely an okay (but not great) computer you could find a cheap copy of Half-Life 2 on PC and still get the Orange Box on 360 as the rest of the games have higher system requirements and will probably run better on 360. I would think the main draw of the Orange Box is the rest of the games anyway.

maybe I'm crazy, but coming from someone who's played both the xbox and 360 versions, I think half life 2 on the 360 is a HUGE step up.

What the Hell is crazy about that?

The Xbox version was like a fuckin' slideshow.

Does the 360 version's water look as bad as the Xbox one or is it at the PC standard? That's actually what would bring me down the most if it was true.

The IGN review brings up this point pretty well.

Half-Life 2 is a prettied-up version of the Xbox release, and it shows the flaws with not a great change from the Xbox version in graphics and some of the slowdowns/loadtime issues.

Episode 1 has a better look with a lot less issues with load times and framerate issues.

Episode 2 looks the best of all three of them.

Ugh, instead of just giving Canadians the regular copy + French inserts and manuals, the insert has Bilingual type on it :\

Hope when I eventually trade it here that American CAGs would still be interested in getting La Boite Orange...
Damn it.

I wish I would have noticed that before I ordered it.

Oh well. I might just throw it on ebay then and grab the PC version while it's still on sale. My PC is over 2 years old, but it ran HL2 great.

Lame.
There's no problem here, just mail it to me.

Got mine on the way home from work today getting ready to bust it open now. Stupid Game City (some crappy lil upstart EB wanna be) didn't get it in today they tried to tell me noone will have it untill tomorrow. So I left and went across the street to WALMART and it was in the display case. LOL I'll just return my paid for preorder to Wallyworld tomorrow for a refund.

First and last time I try to support the little guy I guess although I did buy this with a pretty good trade in deal.... I'll just stick with buying launch day games at Best Buy and earning RZ points. :D

Thanks for summarizing--too lazy to read hehe.

If it's just one game, then I'm better off with the console version for the HL2 series.

In fact, I'd rather have the 360 version to be sure as my PC is out of date I likes the pretty pretty and gamerscore.

On the otherhand, if no one plays TF on XBL, what's the point? I'm still a bit torn right now.
Playing HL2 right now, looks just as good as the PC counterpart.
How often/bad are the loading times?
How often/bad are the loading times?
I don't remember the exact points where it loads on the PC, but they seem to be the same.

They happen pretty often in comparison to other games, but they don't take that long.

Do you need xbox live for Team Fortress 2 or can you play with bots? I only have 2 controllers and no broadband, but if a friend and I could play co-op against bots that would be a lot of fun. Is this possible?

Why don't you just buy a Nintendo 64?

So my buddy brought over his still sealed 360 version. I get to run a side by side comparison :). See you out there fellas.

So I'm having some trouble with the sound in Half Life 2 on the 360 version. It seems like whenever something is happening to the left of me, the sound is totally muted and barely audible.. I'm using a VGA Cable and computer speakers and no other game has ever given me trouble.. I've played bioshock, halo 3, the Darkness, tons of FPS games with this same setup and only Half Life 2 Orange Box is doing this..

My speakers do have a somewhat worn out connection and require some fiddling sometimes to get audio from both of them, but I checked and sound does come from both, it's just when objects or people are in a certain position I hear nothing.. it's really irritating.

Maybe i should just get some new speakers.

I just read the accusations that HL2 is a uprezzed port of the xbox version.. There's no way. The game looks totally different than the Xbox version. I played a TON of the original xbox version and the lighting, character models, amount of enemies, load times were all different. HL2 on 360 has HDR, extra shadowing when using the flashlight, TONS of extra detail on characters, better explosions/more explosive barrels in the environments, better textures.. it's NOT even close.

Ok, I'm enjoying the game, but feeling a bit let down...

http://xbox360.gamespy.com/xbox-360/half-life-2/736576p1.html

"Speaking of frame rates, the first thing the Valve representative told me when I mentioned that I played the Xbox version of the game was that the Xbox 360 title would be locked-in at 60 frames per second, even during the most intense firefights."

It's running at 30 fps. Ok, I'll suck it up and won't whine, as the game seems steady, but I can't help but wonder what happened to the 60 FPS, and/or the AA...

In game Load times are in the 10 second range

I have set aside $60 for 1 game for the rest of this year...right now it is between Assassin's Creed and The Orange Box. Half-life 2 doesn't really have my intereset but that could change if i play it. Just a bit tired of FPS right now (Halo 3, Bioshock, COD4 beta)...can i get some honest opinions (meaning unbiased if at all possible) as to which game i should get?

I really can't wait for assassins creed, but with only a single player, which is said to be 30 something hours if u do all the side quests. It is hard for a buy, at least for me. It is at the top of my gamefly list, but I would go with orange box, because it is basically the best value in gaming. You are getting 5 great games for 60 bucks, cheaper if u can find a deal.

I'd get The Orange Box over Assassin's Creed, simply because it's an amazing value.

That is, if I had to choose.

I'd go out of my way to get both.

Assassin's Creed looked absolutely AWFUL during the E3 demonstration, and Orange Box is an amazing value.

I'm actually planning on getting two version of The Orange Box. I picked up the PC version today and it's great, but the PC gaming experience is totally different than the Live experience. I was thinking all night that TF2 would be a great Live game.

Assasin's Creed is such an unknown at this point. I'm interested in it also, but I'm not convinced it will be amazing yet.

I know Half Life 2 and Episode 1 are great games, I have played them. From that experience and hearing peoples impressions I am pretty positive the rest of the Orange Box will be amazing too. To me its worth it, but I would consider The Orange Box, my Halo for the year. If you haven't played HL2 before, this is an amazing value.
Someone going to start a TF2 match thread?

No matchmaking so...
Wait, what? There's no matchmaking? How do you play online then? You have to know people to play this online?

There is matchmaking, in the server list variety.

I think he meant, there wasn't any Halo style matchmaking.

Hearing that valve just fancied up the xbox port, rather than porting the pc to 360 bugs me. I never had a problem with the load times on the pc, though that was partly the rig and partly that I'm a patient person. Playing the xbox version, the graphics were... well, they were okay for what the xbox could do. But again, it's odd that valve did the Orange Box HL2 port this way. So I'd really like to hear impressions from those of you who've played HL2 on the PC. How's it look on the 360?

I still think I'll be taking this over the ps3 port (why did Valve hand that port over to EA after EA clearly stated that they had to restructure their manpower to cash in on the wii and 360... basically saying the triple's going to be in the back seat for a while?!). Especially with the TRU buy 2/get 1 sale next week and the fact that Orange Box on the Three won't be out till December.
also, the 360 Orange Box is locked at 30fps. Get the pc version...unless you want achievements and XBL mp.
Aw, man. That's just so wrong. :bomb:
Playing HL2 right now, looks just as good as the PC counterpart.
Says the guy with an avatar from a low-res game.

Seriously though, you think so? What res are you playing in, and when you played on the pc, did you play fully enabled?

I just got done playing orange box on the 360 with my buddy. Again I did buy the PC version via steam, but he was kind enough to bring over the box so that I could see the differences between the two (I like HL2 so much that if I could get a better experience on the 360 I'd buy it again).

My rig isn't anything special, p4 3.06, 1 gig 3200, 8500gt. I can run most everything at high detail, but it hangs and jumps a lot.

After having put time into all three different game "types" (HL2 original, Portal, TF2)--- I'm getting the 360 version tomorrow. HL2 looks great on my TV-- effects are there that I haven't even seen before on the PC version. Portal was a blast to play ( like many of you I thought I'd put 10 minutes into it, wound up getting to level 15 after an hour and change)

Only thing that may change is TF2, when you have a good host, the game is smooth as butter-- but I think I did wind up in a game hosted by a dude in Dubai (Orange Box is Region Free, after all)--- when I got in it was like watching a slideshow.

I'd request they change the ping indicator to an actual numerical value-- gives a much better idea about how the game will be.

Only played player matches, but I always had a full list per refresh, ranked however only had two games when I looked.

All in all OB on the 360 is smooth, the loads are frequent in Half Life 2, but they're thankfully short most of the time.

IGN was totally wrong on their comment about Half Life 2 on here. I don't know why they said that..

It is NOT an Xbox port! The load times are never more than 10 seconds and the graphics are equal to the PC version but locked at 30fps.

For example, on the orange box for PC, in the set of tunnels you go into before you have to go underwater and break the wooden planks holding the large spindles underwater, there are about 30 explosive barrels in that room, stacked on the walls and all around. This is how it was on the PC version from my short time with it.

In the Xbox version, they took most of those barrels out because them detonating all at once would have looked terrible at that framerate. There are other various areas where objects were removed to decrease detail and physics calculations that are added in the Orange Box version. Also as said before, characters have lots more detail and lighting is much improved, especially noticeable with the flashlight on.

I really don't understand IGN's comments on that.

Just picked this game up on a whim earlier in the night. Wal-Mart wasn't supposed to sell the game until 12 p.m. PST but I got the game about 9 p.m. since the game was just sitting behind the glass.

Very impressive version of HL2. I played the original on Xbox and it was unplayable due to technical issues. On 360, the game looks great.

Team Fortress will take some getting used to for me - I need some practice. First time Team Fortress players hit me up - XBL RudyPants.

Portal is a blast but I can see it being boring after going through it once.

I'm love this.

Portal was/is amazing.

I'm having more fun with TF2 than Halo 3.

And Half Life 2 ain't so bad, and I'm sure the episodes will impress, once I get to them.

I'm playing in 1080i.

On PC, I played in 1280x1024 with AA, I believe.

To me, they look the same, apparently the 360 version has more/better effects, but I couldn't tell ya.

Portal is fun as hell. The stuff the robot lady says on the speaker system is hillarious. I don't think it'll get boring though. There's an advanced puzzle set you unlock after beating it I heard. And a mode that records stats (for leaderboard purposes?), things like portals created, steps taken, time taken.

I didn't get to play much of anything else yet. I have to grind the last few achievements out of Test Drive Unlimited and finally shelf that game.
