I figured why not have a Sopranos season 6 thread to discuss the show and what we think is going to happen.

So your thoughts about the season premiere

One of the biggest things that got me was that Lorraine Bracco (Dr. Melfi) got super fat. why?

Tony might be dead for the last 6 years. WTF? Does this mean the final episode for the series will be us seeing Tony dead or all the characters reminisce about him. So all this time we have been watching peoples memories.

You think when carmella replaces the wood in the house. She will find Ades' body?

Tony is not dead just want you the think that way, being that there was no preview for next week. People would be too pissed off if he was dead. It should be interestin to see what happens with the captains when he is in the hospital

My big thing with why I think Tony couldn't possibly be dead is when they were showing the premiere party before the episode started, they were talking to Julianna Marguiles about her role on the show this year. And they showed a scene with her and Tony. So I don't think he's quite dead yet, or at least from what I can see.
Good episode.

I believe Dr. Melfi recently had a baby in real life. That's why she's bigger.
Thats no excuse for her to get fat.

it was a good episode...it was a little slow to begin with, but it picked up quickly. Poor Hesh.

I think it would be good if tony is dead, as you would have all his captains fighting for the top spot, and you would have johnny sac's men intervening

My first thought is that Tony is dead, but 2nd thought nah. When did Chris become a captain? I this is shocking after all that happened in season 4.

Also I wouldn't say that Melfi got super fat. It looked like she gained 10 lbs not "super fat."

Dude i'm with you, that hanging seen was fucking unreal and he pissed himself at the end. They fucking made it look real, it was borderline unnerving.

Well the premiere episode did struggle a little with the ratings.

HOUSEWIVES WHACK TONY SOPRANO: Isn't it a sad when Susan's way-prolonged spleen crisis trumps Tony Soprano's return? In a closely-watched contest, Sunday's Desperate Housewives, with 22.15 million viewers, delivered a hit to The Sopranos, which was watched by an audience of 9.46 million. The HBO crime drama's Season 6 debut was its lowest-rated premiere since Season 2, a 2.7 million viewer drop from the previous season's start and off a full 4 million from the series' best-ever premiere, for Season 4. ABC's Grey's Anatomy, meanwhile, continued to build on its Housewives lead-in, drawing 22.5 million total viewer

prediction: christoper dies

reasons 1- emulation of godfather vito/sonny/michael = tony/christopher/aj
reasons 2- chris is not well thought of/appreciated/respected
reasons 3- his storylines have run their course, the wife, the rise to captain, tony as his protector/benefactor
reasons 4- it is unexpected, but yet still believable and would be well received critically and by the audience who will like chris less and less as the season goes on if ep 1 was any indication

See I don't think you can compare stuff like that. I hate when people say this show beat this show in ratings etc. I dare to say most of the tv's in this country only have bunny ears. Let alone cable, then add to that cable + a premium cable channel that costs $15 bucks a month. I don't think you can compare the two.

However being a huge sopranos fan. I feel like the show is done with. All of the actors who play the characters have changed way to much in the off season. It has a different feel then before.

As of Dec 31 2004 HBO had 39 million subscribers. I dont know how many more they added last year but about 25% of subscribers watched The Sopranos. Not bad at all.

I wasn't comparing it to desperate housewifes, I would be more concerned with these numbers

2.7 million is about a 22.3% drop from the last season.

I think what hurt them is they have not had any new Sunday shows since November.

I watched both Desperate Housewives and Sopranos.

Good opener for Sopranos, it's my first time ever watching the show and it took a while for the action to take place but when it did it was very good.

yeah that didn't make sense, what happened to the wire? I thought that was supposed to air b4 the soprano's

Man, the episodes comming up look really good.

I like Cil quite a bit... i'm really hoping he continues to lead as the show continues while tony is out of comission

Yes it does. But these last two have me disappointed. I rather watch my Season 1-5 dvds then the last two shows.

I dislike hospitals and continual dream sequences from people in hospitals living alternative lives, if its like this all season I will be pissed

it seems like every tv show thats every been on tv does the whole cop-out someones in the hospital. I really don't see sopranos, going for another 2 season.

I LOVE the last two episodes! I have been a fan since day one and the last show brought a tear to my eye a few times. The only other time this hapened was when Adriana was taken to the woods and when big pussy was fish food.
I also gave a big hell yea when AJ finally realized his responsibilities as a Soprano. I was hoping AJ would realize that he would have to kill Uncle Jun (sp) himself (without someone giving him the idea.)
I am glad the Sopranos is giving us some real drama that the show has been missing for a few seasons (give or take a few episodes.)
Wow a 2 year hiatus and all we get so far, is two suck ass episodes.
I thought that the last two episodes have been fantastic. It custom for the first episodes of a season to start off slow, then they really pick up. This seems like it will be a great season, and I can't wait for next week.

By the way things are looking I guess I'm the only one who doesn't care for the first two shows. I just hate when shows do the whole hospital routine its just so sub standard tv BS. That has been done thousands of times in the last 50 years. Maybe I'm over simplifying it though. I don't know how I feel, I guess I'm not used to Tony not being in charge.

Yeah it sucks, but I guess this is the way Chase wanted to go with the story. I honestly think Tony will be fine. Also refering to your other quote, this is the last season. Twelve will air until mid June or July, then the final Eight sometime in the early part of 07. Here is a link for your reading pleasure http://today.reuters.co.uk/news/new...1_N10227854_RTRUKOC_0_UK-LEISURE-SOPRANOS.xml. All the episodes are supposed to be part of a 20 episode final season. I find this odd that they didn't split them up so that they can make more money selling to boxed sets, but they'll probably split them up anyway and charge 99.99 for both of them. (Damn yous HBO damn yous)

-The reason I think Tony will be allright is because I remember seeing the trailer and him telling someone "Do you want to take care of his kids when he's gone?" Also I think I saw him meeting with Milfi but that could have been the meeting we saw in episode one. I REALLY REALLY hope that Tony does not die. However through the first five seasons this show has earned my FULL devotion, so they can pretty much do whatever they want and I'll still watch (Aside from having Andy Milanokis pull a drive by and kill Chris Multisante, then I'd stop watching)

Is nobody watching this show? I figured there would be more discussion going on here. It's a damn shame that more people don't get to see this.

I agree I made this thread the night of the 1st show, and its just me you and about 10 other people who come and go.

I said it earlier on in this thread that this show will not last another 2 season. I just have a knack for knowing when shows jump, and I think this is the season the sopranos do it. I feel like that Chase has nothing left to do. He can't think of what to do to make the show as great as it was in season 4 & 5. I think they struggled to write this season.

Watch all the episodes from season 1-5. They have no 2 or 3 part episodes like this with Tony in the hospital. If you watch any old show you will see that, something happens in near the start of the show, then Tony takes care of it at the end, small music montage and credits roll. The whole FBI and R.I.C.O thing don't count though ;)

The other thing I don't see is Tony coming out of the Hospital for another 2 or 3 episodes. Next week I see it being about other memebers of the family.

I dare to say that this next episode might just be about Anthony Jr. going to kill Uncle Jr.

Yes they have been foreshadowing AJ getting in the mob and following Tony's footsteps throughout the series. If indeed he does take out Junior, I will fall in love with this season.

I think you should be optimistic as I think this could go down as the best season of the Sopranos. I know it's a little different change of pace right now but you should understand that we have a MAJOR plot development here and it will take time. Also I thought season 2 and 3 were the best, but it's EXTREMELY hard for me to pick a favorite as they are all AMAZING I don't think I'll think any differently when this season is over, but that last episode sure had me on the edge of my seat and was quite emotional. I especially liked the part where they showed Multisante starting to cry, that's some POWERFUL stuff right there. Oh well wait til next week I guess.
Is it just me or was Christopher driving Johnny Sacks old car?
First post in the Sopranos Season thread: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1773916

Second, if you watched the first episode Johnny Sacks wife while visiting him in jail told him that Christopher was interested in buying the car and would pay cash so Johnny Sacks could get rid of evidence against him before his trial. Because the Government were taking inventory of his belongings and were about to start convicating them.

There's tons of places Chase could go.

1) War with New York
2) War within the family
3) RICO arrest
4) Etc.....

First Episode: I thought it was cheap the way they killed off Ray......especially when he's been that waaa-waaaayyy back plot complication since the first season....(or two).

The Uncle Junior Dementia thing...honsetly, did you see that coming? No you didn't.......granted I hate the "Delerioous guy slipping in and out of coma" episodes, but at least it wasn't all insane.

Did you also notice James Gandalfini dropping his "Tony Sporano" Accent when he was in his dream playing the other guy? :)

Personally, I'm really hoping they kill off Anthony Jr. :) I mean, I've hated his character since they first introduced him, and now I'm hoping someone plugs him full of holes because....hes the epitome of a worthless, spoiled son with no direction. Someone kill him! :)

Funny how its been 2 years but you slip back into thes how like it never went off the air. The first three seasons are fantastic...the last two...not so much, mostly because they seem to be quite on the depressing side. Not alot of happiness in the episodes.

First few seaons were almost like "This wacky mob family show" laced with gratuitous violence. But by season 4 and 5 it was like "The Trials and Tribulations of a mob boss"...the show got darker, like a dark cloud was over everything....it was almost like work to watch.

I'm looking forward to the rest of the Sopranos episodes.....should be good stuff.

Then...bring on Deadwood Season III baby...!

I'm just not a fan of dream sequences. I know we are supposed to be finding out more about Tony's inner psyche but I honestly don't care. Sure it's nice to see that while he is unconscious he dreams of having a loving wife and kids and a regular job and all that crap but after all the evil shit we've seen him do over the years he is beyond redeemable. Tony getting taken out by his crazy uncle would be a fitting way to go.

If all 20 episodes have the same premise as the last one I'm not going to make it to the end...

You know Tony will be fine because without him the show is nothing. They could go on for a couple episodes about the balance of power now but thats it. He needs to come back right away. Last episode I thought was one of the worst. I understand the point of it but we didnt need a while episode about his family visting him. Just my thoughts....

best show on TV

the first two eps were spectacular

if Fellini wasn't dead I would have sworn he guest directed Join The Club

also ridiculous props to Edie Falco for one of the greatest Television performances of all time last ep. the scene with her by Tony's bed... devastating

michael imperioli is always amazing too... when he was talking to the FBI agents about terrorists and he capped off with "As far as Tony's concerned... DON'T get me started!" *flourish w/cig* the guy is a pro

the dialogue about Finnerty was pretty genius as well. "I think he drives a Lexus"

nice sybolism/direction via the 'throw away' dialogue

*edit*

someone mentioned to me today that Gandolfini should be nominated for an Emmy just based on his breathing while in the hospital bed

Man I'd be willing to bet a lot of money that your the only one who thinks this. As I've said before over the course of this series there have been drops of foreshadowing of Anthony Jr. getting into the mob. The little things like his first panic attack, and the recent developement of him flunking out of school after a couple of semesters. Anyway I love Anthony and I hope he pops Junior in his face.

Okay now you don't sound like a complete idiot.

Anyway graystone where are you at, someone needs to help me out with all these haters. Am I really the only one who thought the last two episodes were great? The last one was one of my all time favs. I thought there was a lot of emotion in it and like PKRipp3r said Falco had a HELL of a performance in that show, the acting is unbelievable. I don't know if I'm at a disadvantage here but I didn't see ANY episodes of the Sopranos until January of this year. I saw season two, and was like oh my god this show kicks ass. I went out and bought all the seasons and plugged through them in about two weeks. There's only a couple of episodes I didn't like (The one were Tony gets food poisoning and the one with the talking fish-last one in season 2). Otherwise I think these last two episodes have been up to par, call me crazy. Anyways this has been a long enough rant.

Loved the last 2 ep's, especially the last one... lots of stuff that is easy to miss. The writing, directing, acting, and cinematography (the earthy-tone in the dream world) was excellent, especially for a TV drama. Can't wait to see how they conclude the dream sequence and we finally get the "OH SO THATS WHAT IT MEANS" feeling. I'm not sure if that's Tony's hell (he has no pull in the dream world, he's lost, he has no identity, noone knows him, he can't finish his food, can't get women), and I wonder how it will affect him in the outcome (if there is one).

Theory/spolier
I also heard some chatter about how this could be connected to the "7 souls" song in the beginning of episode 1. Step by step Tony is losing his "7 souls" (one of htem identity), and is dieing slowly. Is the lighthouse the light to salvation? To life? To death? Some stuff I hope gets answered soon.

Paulie calling A.J. "Van Helsing" had me cracking up as well :D

Yeah and what's your point. There was obviously a reason for it, it wasn't a mistake.

Yeah..its called..."I'm bringing it up", people may not have noticed it....it was a subtle thing. I thought it was a nice touch that in Tonys dream his own voice is slighty different (along with his life), just like his wife's voice on the phone is Carmella-esque, but it doesn't sound exactly like her...nice touches is all.

I dont care if I am or I am not, he's a perfect example of the directionless kid. Tony, when he was young, had a stern parental life and grew into the family business. Anthony Jr is, no matter how you slice it, just a pussy. A rich kid who gets whatever he wants, lies about everything, etc. I have a feeling he's going to THINK hes "mob material" this season, try to do something Mob-esque, and wind up getting capped or kidnapped. He's no Jackie Jr.....

Okay now you don't sound like a complete idiot.
well fuck you very much ;)

but I didn't see ANY episodes of the Sopranos until January of this year. I saw season two, and was like oh my god this show kicks ass. I went out and bought all the seasons and plugged through them in about two weeks.

Thats you're problem...you're in fanboy-land right now. While the last two showswere good, they weren't great. Seasons 1, 2, and 3 are so good I watch them like once a year.

There's only a couple of episodes I didn't like (The one were Tony gets food poisoning and the one with the talking fish-last one in season 2).

So you hated the two episodes where Tony has delusions or dream sequences?? You mean...like the entire episode last week? I dont get it....
The Food Poisioning one was hysterical....

Everyone this season seems to have lost weight except Tony. Meadow looks anorexic, and even Bobby B. got on board the weight loss wagon. Vito looks great, but he still has that funny waddle when he walks.

AJ has already flunked out of college, so his next stop will be prison after an attempt on Junior's life.

It's crazy that Bobby and Janice had a kid together. There was really no segue into that event (I mean they were married, but no mention of a pregnancy).

I had trouble watching the hanging scene, too.
Meadow has turned into quite the hottie.
I liked her better with a little more meat on her bones. She's too damn skinny now.

What happened to that little blonde cutie that AJ was dating last season?

I'll have to think about the 7 souls idea. I wasn't paying attention when the narrator was talking about them in the first episode. I kept telling him to "shut up" and get on with the story.

Here is the passage that was being narrated at the beginning of episode 1:

http://www.spress.de/author/burroughs/texts/prose/wlands.htm

I think slimpip may be on to something here. In the scene where Tony discovers he has Alzheimer's, this may be the memory, or "Kaibit" (the 6th soul) beginning to leave Tony's body. I don't know about the other 6 souls, though. Except for #7, "Sekhu", which I suppose would be the vessel, or Tony's actual body.

It was funny when Paulie told Vito that he would be taking AJ home. I wonder if Paulie knows that Vito's gay, and he didn't want him to try and seduce AJ?
