Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I wish I could demo the game to see how it runs. I rented the 360 version a few years ago and happily got every achievement point. I'd like to play it again and would prefer to have it on the PC because it's something I can see revisiting every few years, but the problems I've read about make it hard to decide. I guess I have 24 hours to decide.

I played this when it came out for 360 and had a lot of fun but lost interest after a while. I actually proffered the theme over most of the GTA because I have a hard time being a "Bad" guy in games. and this was much more whimsical and lightweight. Instead of killing kids you are beating them up and giving wedgies.

Demos for older games are rarely worth your time if you are just looking to see if it works. Most of the time the demo is pre-release or 1.0 code of the game and hasn't been updated at all. Any bugs that were in the game at launch and sometimes a few that were fixed by launch are in the demo.

The Kane & Lynch 2 Demo doesn't run at all on my system without a ton of tweaks but retail works fine.

Sure, I realize this. I said I wish I could demo the game, not download a demo. ;)

The older I get the fewer friends I can call up to let me borrow a game. Even if they were still playing as many games as they did when we were younger, no one buys PC games at retail anymore.

Looks like patch 1.2 was supposed to fix crashes and some streaming problems. I'd play with a 360 pad if I bought it. At this price I might have to go for it. Just hope the 1.2 patch did enough.

"one of the mini games asks you to move the mouse-wheel up and down simultaneously in the default set-up"

Excerpt from Bully PC review from IGN in which the game received a 41/100:
Bully's biggest problem is that it's a shoddy port job, rife with technical missteps that wouldn't warrant comment if they weren't so profoundly damaging to the game. Forget to enable vertical sync, and you can forget completing most classes: In some areas, the game runs at rocket speed, making timed button presses all but impossible. Turn the feature on, however, and prepare for framerate drops that make NASDAQ look stable. These problems, coupled with frequent crashes and a persistent drifting mouse bug (remember what used to happen when you'd hold down a control stick while booting up a game?) make just playing Bully a frustrating chore.
It didn't.

I am sure nobody would mind you standing around an elementary or middle school asking kids if you could borrow some of their games.

My husband and I played Bully back in April. We didn't experience anything that either of us remembers as a problem, performance-wise.

At $3.74, it's so worth it.

I wish online retailers would implement a lending system similar to the ebook one where you can lend a game to someone for so many hours/days/or weeks and have it unavailable to you or guest pass options. Oh well I dont think we will ever see it but it sure would be nice.
I liked Bully a lot on PS2 but I read about the PC version a while ago and it sounded like it had a lot of problems. Does anyone have personal experience?
I played it in the last year with almost no problems that I remember. Very fun and enjoyable game. As some of the people here mentioned, I think recent patches fixes a lot of the initial problems. Recommend playing it with a gamepad.
Is any of that Magicka DLC worth it? There's so freaking much.
Vietnam is really cool and adds single player content. I think the rest is pvp maps and new robes. I have most of the robes but I don't play PvP so I can't comment on the maps.

The newest one, The Stars Are Left, is also single player content.

Both OnLive and PS+ members can try full games with a time limit. It'd be nice if Steam did something like it in the future. Of course those systems are very closed. I'm sure pirates would end up using Steam to download games and then just find a crack.

The problem with both of those is that it just starts you at the beginning of the game which doesn't always suit the individual title.

OnLive does it better as it doesn't require a download. I've yet to download one of the full game trials on PSN as you are downloading the entire game for a 60 minute trial. Unfortunately, I am just below my comcast 250gb download cap every month and can't waste it on things like that.

I bought Bully years ago cheap on eBay, but sadly could not play the bloody thing because I have Vista 64 and there was a problem with the game not finding the correct memory or some such nonsense with any 64bit computers.

So I gave it to my wife to test on her older PC and it installed and played fine. She never, EVER plays games with joy-pads (she just can't get used to them) yet she played Bully for hours and hours and completed it (She never played "that kind of game") as she is always playing bloody RPGs (Damn you LOTRO!!!)

So anywhoo, after about a year or two, Rockstar (or whoever did the PC port) FINALLY released another patch that fixed the 64bit problem, so at last I got to play (and complete) the game myself.

It was great fun for both me and the wife and neither of us had ANY problems with crashing or game ending bugs or whatnot, so take that for what you will.

Amazon has Deus Ex HR on sale today, both digital AND physical copies for $19.99. Steamworks, of course. But if you're the kind of gamer who likes to have the box on your shelf, there you go.

I'm not sure if they have them any longer but physical copies had an onlive code as well. If it does, you can either use, give, or sell that to offset the cost a bit.

Thanks for the suggestions. Single-player content is good.

I'll add another recommendation for Bully. I played and finished it on the PS2, traded away, and then got it back when bought a lot of 5 mystery PS2 discs.

It was a very fun game. Basically a pretty lightweight GTA game without all the M elements.

I had the same PS2/PC dichotomy issues with Bully. I rated the PS2 version 5 stars here and the PC port of B:SE 1 star because it ran so shoddily on my modest rig. I had a hard copy that was never patched and I gave up. Bought a Steam copy after reading people here say that the patches fixed many problems, and installed it but my daughter (who has finished it countless times and loves it to death) and I find it too hard to play with KBM and we don't have a 360 controller, and there's no native support for the old dualshock style controllers (I know I could always use j2p or somesuch).

As far as the game itself, it's hilarious, has an awesome soundtrack, and engaging storyline. Best of the Rockstar games I've played (which ain't all that many).

I own bully on the ps2 and rented it on the 360 for the extra missions. It is an amazing game if you give it a chance, kind of like a pg-13 version of GTA.

LOL I even talked to the guy who played Jimmy Hopkins in that game on Myspace a few times, he was the singer in an alternative rock style band and was hella cool.
Everyone's played Bully. :D
I haven't played Bully, but your recommendation to play Runespell is solid. I'm surprised at how much I enjoy the spin on Poker/Yahtzee. Also, I'm just jealous of you for being able to alt tab into CAG without Steam crashing.

Sucks that you have Steam crash on you. Are you referring to this game or in general?

In general sadly. I just started using steam because of these bundles, but unfortunately am doing so with an 8 year old laptop. The Witcher pointed and laughed.

I hope you know that Steam is the #1 reason people discover they need new PC hardware and go buy it. You're done for.

I can feel your pain. While not in as bad of a situation as you I am rocking a 6-7 year old PC. I tried playing the witcher a week or two ago and while it technically would run it was stuttering every 20 seconds or so, same with Fear 2 and quite a few other games from the last year or two. Playing Mass Effect right now and my PC can handle it...but it looks like or possibly worse then the console versions ;(

I am dying for a new PC but am trying to hold off till the last possible minute to upgrade. I am hoping my patience pays off and I can build like a big $1,000 powerhouse PC right when the next gen kicks off. Then I can just play all my games on the PC for a few years and based on games and pricing decide which next gen console to get(and at a greatly reduced cost).

Aw, I feel you. My husband built me a gaming PC about a year ago for roughly $300, after salvaging some parts from my last PC.

Keep in mind, though, that I don't tend to play graphical powerhouses. So I really can't say if my $300 game machine could run, say, Mass Effect 2 with finesse.

And this is exactly what happened to me. :applause:

Yeah, my 6 year old rig is starting to feel the effects of father time. It isn't just gaming that's killing me, tho. Right now, listening to music on the PC and browsing the web at the same time sometimes taxes the processor, depending on the site. There are many things that I do that peg the processor and it makes things tough to do.

The good thing is that there are still games that are still very playable, if somewhat laggy. That being said, I did try running GTA IV and my computer cried uncle.

i have 200+ ps3 disc games and 100+ psn games, with exclusive xbox and wii games, but steam is pulling me away from my consoles, making me buy games i already own for consoles. and with steam giving me dota2 beta access, my consoles are collecting dust this past few days. i was planning to get saint's row 3 and dead island for ps3, but steam offered them cheaper. also the fallout new vegas + dlc discount was amazing, no way xbl or psn can give that 75% discount.

kinda regret why I did not bother checking steam before.
Well, crap. I think I want to play Mass Effect on Steam. I wonder if it'll be as cheap as it was recently during the Christmas Sale.
More than likely. I remember last year having some of the same games appear at the same price or cheaper during the winter sale. Made me kinda regret buying Batman: AA at Thanksgiving, only to have it go cheaper during the winter sale.

If MA2 goes on sale again, I might pull the trigger, even if I haven't finished MA1 yet.

It feels wrong. I have Skyward Sword staring at me and Uncharted 3 still sealed on the coffee table, yet here I am on Steam playing Cthulhu Saves the World.

I played ME1 this year on my PC. The HUD (heads-up display) for PC is fabulous - much more control over your character(s) than you have in the console editions. However, it's still a 3rd-person perspective game, so playing with KBM gives you that sort of "floaty" feeling as you run around. And using a controller is not a good option, unless you want to drop the controller and grab the KBM every time you pull up the HUD. You do need KBM proficiency to play the PC version.

Curiously, the first Witcher game uses the same Bioware engine as ME1, and the experience is very similar. All the way down to the fact that you can fly halfway around the galaxy but you can't jump over a 2-foot wall.

As for sales, ME1 has been $5 so many times on Steam and D2D, I can't count them. I'm sure it will be again, with ME3 fast approaching.

My husband is playing Mass Effect 2 on his PC behind me. I watched him play the first Mass Effect on 360 a lot. Always looked so cool. If it's about the same price during the Christmas sale, I think I'll get it.

We'll hold hands and buy it together! ;)

I played Bully on PS2 and then Wii. Fantastic game if you like Rockstar's style. If Warriors, GTA, and RDR appeal to you, then Bully no doubt will as well. Cannot speak for port quality though.

Note that you get a copy of the soundtrack with the game. It doesn't cover everything (Like the game's brilliant walking theme) but it has some great tracks all the same.
Anyone played Bully on PC? Was thinking about getting the 360 version for another play through but man this is cheap.
The last couple pages will help you with that. Buy it.

I got Bully SE from D2D about a year ago for the same price and launch it through Steam. Play it with a controller, on Win 7 64, and a Q6600/560 Ti setup. I had a couple hangups before I patched it (Steam version should be fully patched) and since then, zero problems. It's pretty entertaining.
