Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I'm still a little confused about the whole steamworks bit.

How do you know a game is part of steamworks? Also, does that mean no matter where you acquire these games, you can activate them on steam?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-wusf-3601

Usually it means that anywhere you buy them they activate on steam. There are a few games though that are exceptions to this rule and have specific versions for other digital distributors like FEAR 2.

Terraria for $2.50 is steal specially now that they added a ton of new stuff/items with ver1.1 I can't recommended it enough. I picked it up on whim and got instantly hooked on it, you can easily get 100+ hours of gameplay out of it without even trying, this game is sooo addictive
So according to that link, Hunted, Duke, and Space Marine cannot be registered on steam...

Only CoD BO...
Duke Nukem and Space Marine will, for sure, activate on Steam (personal experience). Hunted, according to my research, will not activate on Steam if purchased elsewhere.

Yeah was doing a little research on Hunted, everything confirms that it won't activate on steam. Time to verify the other games.

I took Hunted off the list. For some reason I thought it was steamworks.

Duke Nukem Forever is in the list i posted. Space Marine doesn't look like it is but I know it activates on steam.

You should read the second post of this thread. Explains everything.

December 6th, huh? I'm not sure my wallet is ready.

Honestly, though, with all these Humble and Royale bundles, I've gotten quite a few of the games I've been wanting. Runespell and Dungeons of Dredmor were high on my wishlist, but thanks to these indie bundles, I got them earlier than I planned.

Not quite. That same link that Provis linked to (in your FAQ) refers to just retail cd's and apparently it's not 100% up to date as Space Marine activates on Steam. And on none of the games' store pages does it say if a game is "Steamworks" or not.

And from what I'm reading Steamworks /= Steamplay.

But yeah, is there a way to tell if a game is a Steamworks game from just looking on the game store page either on steampowered.com or the steam store client?

And does "Steamworks" automatically mean the game can be activated on Steam, regardless of purchase method (retail or another digital distribution service)? Or are there exceptions to this rule I have to pay attention to?

There are exceptions like I mentioned with FEAR 2 and a few others. As a general rule if you go on a newer games store page and it doesn't have steam achievements it probably isn't steamworks but that doesn't always work and the opposite is not true either. Your best bet is checking that link I posted, the steam forums, and googling name of game + steamworks. Often the store page at the other retailer will tell you as well but not always.

Thanks Provis. I was just thinking there was some obvious straightforward way that I didn't know about to tell if a game could be activated on steam and/or was a Steamworks game. But I guess not.

edit: It's just that a while ago, Amazon had deals on several PC games and Tony the one in charge in that thread claimed they could be activated on steam when in fact he was just referring to the idea of "adding non-steam games" to steam. This seemed to burn a couple misinformed customers. I'm all for the best deal on games, but if it's activate-able on Steam, it's just that much sweeter. And I know that to some CAGs, including myself, that if it's on Steam or not matters quite a bit.

Again the list works 90 Percent of the time and the other methods fill in about 9.9 percent more but occasionally someone gets burnt.
Not a fan of Terraria. At all.
:grouphug:

I'm not either, for what it's worth. I like objectives in my games. Sandboxes have never interested me much.

I'm one of those uncreative people that got Lego sets as a kid, built them to spec using the instruction sheet, and never modified them.

Terraria, therefore, is not for me. Played it for a few hours and shelved it, so to speak.
You know, I don't recall anyone on here gloating about winning a Steam drawing/contest. I smell a fix. Prove me wrong, Steam!
Yeah, I've never seen anyone gloat about winning a steam contest on any forum I visit. I miss Direct2Drive's contests. I won their Shogun 2 contest which included an Astro A30 headset, a Razer Black Mamba Elite, Razer Black Widow Ultimate, Nvidia 580 GTX and some other stuff plus Shogun 2. It was sweet.

Too bad I haven't seen a contest from them since they were sold. :(
My 20 hours of experience with Terraria was essentially digging, digging and more digging. Not a fan.
I applaud your persistence. I lasted about 20 minutes before going 'screw it' and quitting.

There must be something wrong me. For some reason, that sounds appealing...

I think I need a more mind numbing job then what I do.

You know, I am really not a huge fan of Terrarria. I mean with Minecraft it's cool when you can build a big house and other great things because it's kinda like a huge ass lego set in a way. In Terrarria it's ok there is no point in building something cool because it's 2D and the whole point of Terrarria is spending 50 hours upgrading your gear so you can fight like 2-3 big monsters (which becomes essentially tedious grinding).

If I want to do grinding, I'll play an RPG, which at least has a story to reward me. Games like this do nothing for me.

Runespell is a nasty ass game, BTW. Frustrating when you are on the edge of winning battles, and you lose. It seems to happen all the time.

I dropped Runespell like a hot shit sandwich. Oddly enough, Really Big Sky was worth that bundle for me. I don't get why, it's not even that good a shump but I've played a goodly amount of it.

I'm finally getting to New Vegas after picking it up during the Thanksgiving sale.

I borrowed it from a friend awhile back for PS3 and kind of enjoyed it, but it's definitely smoother on PC. Barely anything in way of loading.

Definitely worth the $5, and can hold me over until Skyrim hits a price I can stomach.

I wish we would get a leak for the steam sale like last year. I think its because coffeedge vanished on us ;( No one appreciated that guy nearly enough!

I was just looking through last year's posts and thought the same thing. I wonder whatever happened to him; he seemed to be disliked by a bunch of people.

In other news, Amazon has Nuclear Dawn (Steamworks) for $6.99, which is 70% off. I realize that there will be a free weekend coming up and, most likely, a price reduction. However, I wonder if it'll be 75% or 50%? You also get that $5 January voucher with purchase - seems kinda tempting.

I've enjoyed Runespell the last couple days and am still playing it. I kinda soured it for myself going after some marathon achievements, but now that I have them all, I'm looking forward to playing the game for reals. :D

He was a lot like RollingSkull, he spoke his mind clearly, bluntly at times, and people don't seem to appreciate that.

Defense Grid is getting an expansion!

Defense Grid: You Monster is the first full story expansion of the award-winning game and will be available for download from both Steam and Xbox LIVE Arcade on December 7, 2011.

GLaDOS, the menacing AI from Valve’s awesome Portal franchise, guest stars in this new 8-level Defense Grid expansion. Players will battle not only alien hordes, but the deviousness of GLaDOS as she tests the player’s skills and changes all of the rules. In addition to the 8 new maps, Defense Grid: You Monster features 35 challenge missions, many new achievements and over 15 hours of additional game play. Defense Grid: You Monster will be available for $4.99 or 400 Microsoft points and requires the original game to play.

While I liked Defense Grid, and new content is always welcome, I can't say I'm all that excited about them piggy-backing on Valve. It seems a little... cheap?

Regardless, I'll wait until it inevitably goes on sale over the holiday. Thanks eastx.

I forgot how glitchy Morrowind can get after installing huge overhaul mods. Have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete is every time I want to reload a save. Still worth it though because the graphics look stunning now!

I bought Defense Grid for US$2.49 two years ago, one of the best purchases I have made on Steam considering I spent over 100 hours playing it. It's strange to pay twice that amount for an expansion (and not very "CAGy"), but it's a way of supporting the developer to make more DLC and the sequel, hopefully.

Suggesting another multi-game tie in, like when Portal 2 was released. Interesting! I bet we get more teasers soon. I wonder what Dejobann Games is up to this time around..!

I dont really mind Defense Grid piggybacking on Portal 2. Its not like I play Defense Grid for the story. New dlc means new levels. Thats all that counts. A Portal 2 tie-in will probably make it a witty experience. I wish Defense Grid had steam cloud. I played it a bunch on my laptop and I wanna install it on my pc now. Im too lazy to transfer the save file.

So why is Limbo being hated on again? I'm probably halfway through the game and loving every minimalist aspect about it. The puzzles have just the right balance of headscratching and the gore is awesome. I've had a couple of 'I knew it!' moments where the game trolls you before you can react lol. Love the atmosphere and gameplay. Best $2.50 I've ever spent on Steam.

It's a hit or miss game. Although you are still in the good part of it. The worst part of that game is the last 1/3. I really like the game but it felt like they were just trying to finish it at the end.

I dont think its a bad game but I hate the shit out of it because its all about environmental puzzles. There is little real gameplay or story...its all how do I push this log or trap this time.
It does have cloud support now (and has since June). Enjoy :)

Story annoys me; probably why I hated Braid. Limbo keeps the puzzles fresh and clever (at least so far) so it's at least engaging.
