Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

*did not feel that way* But again I hate environmental puzzles with a passion soooo

Usually it means that anywhere you buy them they activate on steam. There are a few games though that are exceptions to this rule and have specific versions for other digital distributors like FEAR 2.
When for example it says "Darksiders keys in this format 1AB2C-D3FGH-456I7-JK8LM-NOP9Q" is there a way to know if they use that format at the non-Steam site you're buying it from? Specifying that only this format works makes me hesitant that if I bought it elsewhere it wouldn't be under the correct format. As I learned the other day it seems all Darksiders copies register on Steam, but I don't know about any other games.
Defense Grid is getting an expansion!

Defense Grid: You Monster is the first full story expansion of the award-winning game and will be available for download from both Steam and Xbox LIVE Arcade on December 7, 2011.

GLaDOS, the menacing AI from Valve’s awesome Portal franchise, guest stars in this new 8-level Defense Grid expansion. Players will battle not only alien hordes, but the deviousness of GLaDOS as she tests the player’s skills and changes all of the rules. In addition to the 8 new maps, Defense Grid: You Monster features 35 challenge missions, many new achievements and over 15 hours of additional game play. Defense Grid: You Monster will be available for $4.99 or 400 Microsoft points and requires the original game to play.

Great news for me. I loved Defense Grid, it's one of those games I really had no expectations for and knew nothing about, and ended up sinking a ton of hours into it. I'll probably even buy the expansion for full price, although it will be tough with the holiday sale coming up.
While I liked Defense Grid, and new content is always welcome, I can't say I'm all that excited about them piggy-backing on Valve. It seems a little... cheap?

Regardless, I'll wait until it inevitably goes on sale over the holiday. Thanks eastx.
They participated heavily in the Portal 2 ARG and are working with Valve on a version of CounterStrike. No surprise that they'd have a further tie-in.

Either way - I'm super-excited about it and will be buying it as soon as it is out, counter to my CAG sensibilities. Such is love.

Oh man Galactic Civilizations II is on steam now. :/ why does it have to release now with the Winter sale happening later this month. Must resist urge to buy XD
I dont think its a bad game but I hate the shit out of it because its all about environmental puzzles. There is little real gameplay or story...its all how do I push this log or trap this time.
How is problem solving/puzzles not real gameplay?

Oh, hell yes.

tempted to get the Dungeon Siege complete for 24$. i already have the game on ps3. but the bundle includes the DLC and Dungeon Siege 1 and 2 which are great games.

Yeah, that is one of my favorite games. It is well worth $15 or whatever they are asking for it.

For Dungeon Siege III. As much as I wanted to like that game, I just found it very bland and generic. It's not that it's a bad game, it's decent but I can't help but thinking this game screams generic fantasy game and it pretty much turned me off.

I found this to be the case as well, but with a second player co-op(in my case, local couch co-op on the 360) the game was fun enough to play through as a pretty standard generic fantasy dungeon crawl. There's enough loot to make it fun, the story is a complete throwaway, but the game itself can be pretty challenging as well(I played it through twice, once on normal and once on harcore, switched characters up and they do play pretty differently.)

I'd say for the price on Steam with the old games included, it'd be worth it, especially if you have someone to play it with co op!

I know not many people liked DS3 but it looks amazing in 3D Vision. Cameras could use some work of course.

Also I wish they had DS1 and DS2 as DLC for those of us that have DS3 already. I really don't want to buy the game all over again to get DS1 and DS2.

I didnt see this posted in the last couple of pages but amazon has some of the total war games on sale today. Standouts are TW: Shogun 2 for $9.99,(should activate on steam) which is 5.00 cheaper than the previous sale. I cant see it getting much less than that during the winter sale.

They should just let us buy DS1 and 2 separately. I dont even want DS3 at all. I dont care care that DS1 and DS2 dont have all their expansions included with online play. I would pay $5 for each easily.

I agree. I dont understand the concept behind selling them together but not separate. I would buy DS3 with it, but that game is optimized so horribly my PC wont run it...

I thought that would be consistant with the rest of the series. I played the first game years ago, and I wouldn't have defined it as anything but generic. Fun, but generic.

I played the demo for DS3 a few months ago and I also thought it was just generic and dull. I've played worse but I've certainly played better. I also wish I could just buy DS1&2 separately. I already own DS2 on disk but I'd love to have it on Steam.

I am vaguely interested in DS3 but I'm getting a bit sick of the top down dungeon crawler and with Torchlight 2/Diablo 3 around the corner I don't think I would ever play it.

I'm also really tempted by TW: Shogun @ Amazon for $9.99 but I have been burnt with Napoleon and Empire. Must wait for a GOTY version with the DLC. Even on the last steam sale buying all the DLC for Empire and Napoleon was more expensive than buying the GOTY versions of both. I imagine it will be the same with Shogun.

Shogun is getting a little nuts with the DLC stuff. They have a Blood DLC now. It just adds blood and guts effects. That's it. It's cheap, but even so I don't love the idea of developers and publishers carving out basic features like that and then selling it to us seperately.

Wow, that's unfathomably stupid. I think I'll avoid Shogun then.

Agreed, Although I remember back in the day complaining about expansion packs not being a sequel or being to small for the price... I guess i'm just never happy with the decsions most company's make.

This needs to become my new game-buying philosophy.

Example: X Game I've been curious about for a while is down to $15. Have I played better games of that type? Yes? Pass.

One reason its dlc and not just something they patched into the game is it would change the games rating from Teen to Mature and would cause legal problems (plus they would have to correct the rating on all their boxed versions). Theres more reason but that's the real one. Not to mention fans were requesting it and it adds more stuff than just blood. It also has dismemberment, some new sound and effects and I believe new animations to go with it.

Also its not them carving out features, its something that wasn't in the game that fans requested and they made for it as a result.

If i'm not mistaken there never has been blood in Total War games so they definitely didn't remove it to add as dlc later. But I do understand what some people are saying about how bad some dlc is. Some is ok but others are just horrible.

Ah yes, dismemberment and sound effects. Now there's some quality extra content worth paying for.

If it's really the 'Oh poor us we really don't want to but have to charge for it otherwise it changes the rating and we get in trouble' bla bla excuse then let's see if they offer a discounts on the next DLC or expansion to those who bought this one.

And before some other apologist says it's too complicated or they can't do that, BS. It's been done with other games like getting a discount on Arkham City of you already own Arkham Assylum on Steam etc.

Whether it's a new feature added on request or a part of the base game carved out (and I still say that's debatable) it doesn't add any new significant content and it's something that really should COME WITH THE GAME. They even tout that you can turn it off. Now why the hell would you want to turn it off if you paid for it?

Also, why not add a campaign or otherwise some actual gameplay content with it, even if it was some half assed thrown together campaign it would be something.

No matter what anyone says, to me something like this is a basic part of the game and it's akin to charging for high res textures or 5.1 sound, or hell, even sound period.

Even Bethesda themselves admitted the horse armor DLC was rather silly but this is even worse! If anyone wants to go ahead and support this sort of thing I will be happy to tell you I told you so when every little feature that once cam standard becomes something you have to pay extra for.

Motoki, it would completely change the game's ESRB rating. If the series has always been rated T, it makes sense to keep it T but allow people the option of getting the M rated content somehow.

Too late, Craptivision has probably already seen it and is implementing it for the next Call of Duty game. At the low price of JUST $20, you can add keyboard/mouse and controller support!

I was tempted to get my husband Shogun 2 from Amazon as a Christmas present, but he told me he was kinda burned out on the Total War stuff for a while. Those games are biiiiig.

Jesus Christ, people. The blood pack costs less than 2 dollars and is completely cosmetic. You don't have to buy it. The same people who complain about it are probably the same people who are all about TF2 hats.

Damn it people, don't you all know that you have to check your opinions with him first? Doesn't anyone remember where it was voted that only Vegan was allowed to have an opinion and we all have to think like he does?

I almost bought Shogun 2 but then I realized that I just bought that Total War Mega Pack thing a week ago and should probably just play those first. By the time I play all of those Shogun 2 will be $2.50.

Motoki: I was going to respond to each of your points individually, but I realized that it's much quicker to just say that I disagree with all of your opinions and I find your facts to be irreparably faulty.
It's a reference to the first Oblivion DLC - horse armor. Just cosmetic horse armor. That's it.

It's become a synonymous with worthlessness, particularly in relation to games and/or game dlc.

Here's some fun reading material: http://www.gamesradar.com/oblivions...xplicable-we-call-it-basic-human-degradation/
You're close. It wasnt' cosmetic, it was real armor. Horses in Oblivion are expensive when you're starting out. They tend to die trying to defend you in combat if you don't have a heal-on-touch spell for your horse, and that takes a while to acquire.

Why it was A Big Deal (at the time) is that it was a) a blatant moneygrab by Bethesda and b) the first such blatant moneygrab. DLC was a relatively new concept in 2006, and micropayments may have existed in MMOs, but the idea of paying $2 for something that was obviously built into the base game, to be optionally unlocked at a later time, was considered rather vulgar.

tldr: It's not synonymous with "worthlessness", it's synonymous with "crassness".

However, despite all that, it was wildly successful. Bethesda rather much paved the way for the sorts of pre-order bonuses and equipment DLC packs that we see in many games today. Eff 'em!

wasnt it $5?

the 'just don't buy it' argument, while correct, also just completely misses the dang point. games used to be chock full of extras, secrets, and unlockables... for free. now, entire levels, characters, and in some cases worthless extras are sold to us - exactly what those of us who remember horse armor said would happen in 5 to 10 years.

now if all this were in addition to a full and complete game, that's one thing. but the concern is, and always has been, a move away from that. online passes being a perfect example (though i actually think online passes are a legitimate, though unfortunate, answer to used sales).

and whining about other people whining is about the most stupidly hypocritical activity on the internets.
I agree. I dont understand the concept behind selling them together but not separate. I would buy DS3 with it, but that game is optimized so horribly my PC wont run it...
What sucks is I got the game free with my GFX card so I couldn't buy the other two games in the complete pack. They should have a way to buy them separate, I mean sell each one for $10 or something. They will make money. I don't know how this has not crossed their minds yet.

Also This You may or may not have read the article but does this confirm HL3 or at least give us hope?
