Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
You're close. It wasnt' cosmetic, it was real armor. Horses in Oblivion are expensive when you're starting out. They tend to die trying to defend you in combat if you don't have a heal-on-touch spell for your horse, and that takes a while to acquire.

Why it was A Big Deal (at the time) is that it was a) a blatant moneygrab by Bethesda and b) the first such blatant moneygrab. DLC was a relatively new concept in 2006, and micropayments may have existed in MMOs, but the idea of paying $2 for something that was obviously built into the base game, to be optionally unlocked at a later time, was considered rather vulgar.

tldr: It's not synonymous with "worthlessness", it's synonymous with "crassness".

However, despite all that, it was wildly successful. Bethesda rather much paved the way for the sorts of pre-order bonuses and equipment DLC packs that we see in many games today. Eff 'em!
Well that's a much better and more accurate description than what I offered.

I never bit on that standalone DLC with my first copy of Oblivion, but when I bought the GOTY on Steam I tried it out and while it might not be worthless, the value was certainly questionable. I'd say pretty much everyone was in agreement with that.

It is very much a money-grab that set an ugly precedent.

When I logged into Steam today, it said I was logged in elsewhere. I wasn't on any of my devices, and the odds of someone hacking me are like 1%, if that, since I have the SteamGuard thing enabled and just recently changed my password. What gives?

In other news, man, I really want to buy these Stardock games and support them, and the prices are good (they were both on sale for $15), BUT, I know they'll be cheaper, SHOULD really be holiday sale items, and I've already bought the damn things at least twice each... (I realise that makes zero sense, but I don't want to pay more than $5 for my third and final purchases of them. I guess I am just a dirty Steam hoarder.)

GalCiv II and Sins of a Solar Empire are must-haves for me, and I'm really looking forward to Elemental showing up. And I hope when I get my promised free copy of the sequel or pseudo-sequel (I stupidly bought the deluxe edition of the mess that was version 1.0, even bought the dorky novel), it unlocks on Steam.

Please let us know what happens with your account. That's some scary shit. I would contact CS.

As for Stardock, just wait. The Christmas sale is bound to start next week, if past indicators are correct.
Hmmm, let's see what today's Daily Deal + Wishlist Contest Entry is for today....
Daily Deal is Borderlands at $5. GOTY for $7.50. GOTY 4 pack for $22.50.

If you do not own it, I can't recommend this game enough. I love it.

Borderlands: GOTY Edition (BL + ALL DLC) -> 1 pack = $7.49; 4 pack = 22.49
Borderlands [vanilla] -> 1 pack = $5; 4 pack = $15.
ALL Borderlands DLC = $2.49 each; or DLC Only pack [ALL 4 DLC's only] = $7.49.

I have either owned, or not cared for every daily deal this week :( actually most of them I owned except for Dungeon Siege 3. Now I realize how big my Steam game collection is...

I really love this game, too. Best CAG money I've spent this year (I'm only 48 hours in but I'm loving the kill-loot-kill aspect of the game. Guess that's the Diablo II freak in me ;D).

Hated Borderlands myself. It's not THAT bad but it's like Limbo, just a game that offers nothing of value but going through the gaming motions.

Jesper Kyd did the Firestone town theme though and that song is badass as a result.
the 'just don't buy it' argument, while correct, also just completely misses the dang point. games used to be chock full of extras, secrets, and unlockables... for free. now, entire levels, characters, and in some cases worthless extras are sold to us - exactly what those of us who remember horse armor said would happen in 5 to 10 years.

now if all this were in addition to a full and complete game, that's one thing. but the concern is, and always has been, a move away from that. online passes being a perfect example (though i actually think online passes are a legitimate, though unfortunate, answer to used sales).
Obviously, if you don't feel a game justifies its retail price/current sale price with the amount of content it contains, the answer again is to just don't buy it. While some games do indeed ship lighter on content than past games would've, most tend to be worth what they cost IMO. As for Oblivion, the base game has so much gameplay and content, it hardly matters that Bethesda wanted to charge for a few extra trinkets.

Lol, i'm starting to notice limbo in like 75% off your post... :D it couldnt be to bad to instill this kind of reaction on you. On the borderlands topic great game I enjoyed it imensly, as far as fallout type games go this is one of the better ones, may be even better than Fallout 3

So is the entire Super Mario series. What's your point? ;)

I honestly would be interested to see the list of games you do like compared to the games you don't like. You seem like a really hard guy to please. No snark intended. I'm just honestly curious because while you do praise some games in here, you seem to dislike more. I want to get inside the mind of RollingSkull.

I welcome RollingSkull's input. Even when I disagree with his points, he presents them well enough that I can determine whether the elements he dislikes would be things that I can ignore or, in some cases, actually appreciate.

Compare his posts to, say, Yahtzee's comedy video editorials that are often mislabeled as "reviews." RollingSkull's commentary on the games he dislikes is actually useful, he engages in dialogue, and he never bashes for bashing's sake.

I boycotted the horse armor, even after I bought the GOTY! :whistle2:D

Hmmm, haven't been CAGing in over a year, but I came back just in time for the Steam december sale! Too bad I missed the summer sale. Just signed up for steamgifts too. Loving this thread!

Really, putting the games I'd like and don't like in a list would be a huge amount of effort, digging up a list and parsing through it with what I would consider good and bad. I'm too lazy to put in quite that much work. Sorry.

I should be a bit nicer to Borderlands though. It is competently put together, but it's more Diablo style RPG than shooter, and thus is more of a numbers game than a skill game. Combine that with the fact that every environment just feels like dirt between you and the next 12 macguffins you have to collect to tick off one of the four or five quests you have on your to-do list... I have to stick by what I said earlier. It feels like the barest underpinnings of a game, one made entirely of fluff and of none of the good crunchy bits of a game. A game of all vehicle segments or valve puzzles. Even in co-op I was disappointed. Still, $7.50 is not a bad asking price and if loot-grind RPG style questing is your game there's nothing I can think of that's quite like it for online co-op. Even by yourself you would probably get a few decent hours out of it, but, there's just better games, I would say.

LoL, so nowadays having and playing all the games out there is the new thing? :bouncy:
Personally I think Borderlands is borderline (see what I did thar?) mediocre, and no amount of "GOTY" can fix it for me.
I'm that kind of person that will tell you ME2 fucking sucked in comparison to ME1, and now that ME saga became Twilight of gaming (100% romance script) I don't even plan to get ME3. That and I'm a cheap ass.

Just curious as to know why you call ME2 inferior to ME1.

Seriously. Posts like the one you quoted are completely non-constructive and trollish.

While RollingSkull's opinions are usually pretty zany, at least he goes into detail so it's not like he's being thoughtlessly negative.

Yeah...

I honestly disagree with 85% of RollingSkull's opinions on games.

But he's not trolling or being a dick.

He just has certain tastes.

Well, he did join under a month ago, but yeah I agree lol. I welcome RollingSkull's opinion on games, he does what he does very well.

Seriously can't believe Borderlands is on sale AGAIN. Love the game, but damn lol. It's gotta be the game that goes on sale most frequently.
Just curious as to know why you call ME2 inferior to ME1.
If you care what I think here you go super SPOILER TAGS because I don't feel like taking up as much thread space.
For me it was the emphasis and combat and the reduction in the customization of the character (from skills to items, using the same gun for 6 hours... yay).

Spoilers cuase it goes into the story
But it was also the story. Imagine a gangster film or tv series, in which you continuely hear about the leader of this group, but throughout the entire film or series you just see the "good guys" stopping their thugs and minions. And then the film and series ends with you stopping their thugs and minions.

In Mass Effect 1 you learned about and then stopped a reaper... In mass effect 2 you know about the reapers and then go on a 24 hour killing spree of some of the reapers minions and then finish it by killing possibly one of the dumbest inventions the reaper could ever build.

Along with that I really disliked the fact that Mass Effect 2 essentially decide to stop caring about Mass Effect 1. I'm not even talking about the decisions because I thought Bioware would take the easy way on that and hell I would too. But it is the fact that the biggest part of ME1 was the protheans. Once you get onto the giant ship in ME2 you hear this, "The collectors are the protheans". At this moment my heart skipped because I felt that a surge of really interesting information that would link ME1 to ME2 was about the spill out through my speakers and tv screen. Then I was left in utter disappointment when it was completely ignored. And I mean completely. After that line they moved onto something else.

But really the story bothered the hell out of me. I'm not a fan of just being told someone is evil (Cerberus). I don't remember them from the 1st game (because they were part of what 2 side missions) and aside from Jack's story and some DLC there weren't any other parts that actually showed Cerburus was evil. Hell, everyone in the damn orginization besides the Illusive man was fairly nice and no more species-ist than the original Normandy Crew....

I think the biggest reason for me disliking it though was the fact that I liked ME1 way too much though. I played through it six times before ME2 came out and I had trouble bringing myself to even do a second playthrough of ME2.

I wouldn't say ME2 is inferior. It is just built in a different way for what I feel like to be for a different crowd. It became too general and pandered to what would make it popular, which unfortunately wasn't the reason I liked Mass Effect 1 so much. I would much rather take a terribly optimized ME1 over ME2 any day.

I do love how so many people will say a game is bad and then just ignore why they think it is. If you have a reason, no matter how insane it may seem, it essentially validates you as a human and not as a complete douche.

Kaltic,

One note I'd like to make is that I think the way you saw Cerberus was intended to be one of the ways to view that group. I don't think the game is truly invested in them being "Evil." They're a group with some complicated motives that a lot of people in the game's universe don't like, so as a political force they are villainized.

I understand where you're coming from with the rest of it, though.
Is Brink worth $5? I'm not going to have much time to try this free play weekend.
I loved Brink at $20. The shooting, for me, is just fantastic. The look of the game is pretty good as well. It feels clunky at times, but I really liked it, being a person that loves Battlefield to death and doesn't care too much for CoD.

Forgettable story, little customization, and clunky online gaming experience plague the game as a whole. However, the shooting alone covers all of that for me. Also, don't go into the game expecting a huge community, because it's VERY small. Talking like under 50 players lol... At least in my experience.

EDIT: Might just be the free weekend, but there's around 3,000 online right now.

I couldn't bring myself to complete a second playthrough of ME1 years after the first (although if you count my two playthroughs of KotOR, then I played through three times ;)). At least ME2 was an original game, and didn't build 90% of the game around KotOR 1's structure.

The one thing which entirely nullified the entire epicness of ME1 for me was
these massive, ancient, epic, world-devouring reavers - a reasonable opponent and certainly plot-worthy - just sticking around to chat with one human, politely answering questions in English, repeating answers if you wanted to double-check something. It completely undermined the scale and awe which had been building up until that point. Oh, hello! You're millions of years old and you've nommed hundreds of planets all by yourself? Mind sticking around and answering my spoken questions in English for a few minutes?
Complete waste of a build-up, but I limped on to finish the game anyway.

I have a (fairly long) list of problems with ME2 (not least the loading times GAAAHHH), most of which should have been spotted and fixed, but the fact remains that after I completed it, for some reason I rolled another character and immediately started a second playthough - and finished it. And I've played through a third time. And I'm looking forward to a fourth.

I don't know if willietehpanda is claiming that ME2 specifically 100% romance, but I didn't even bother with the romance options in my playthroughs. Well, except trying to have my male Shep get it on with Garrus, but that never seems to be possible. :(

So i read all of this just to finish it with homosex...

I enjoyed ME 1 the first time I played it, but felt it was kinda boring when I went back to it after playing ME 2. I still love KOTOR though.

It's technically unimpressive yet manages to run worse on my system, with everything cranked up, than Crysis 2. I was expected a better feel of weight from the SMART system and the weapons, and the everything. I can't see myself playing it even at $5. Maybe it gets better with time but I don't want to invest that time into this one.

Just played it again and it runs great on my rig, and the shooting is still as great as it was a couple months ago. I appreciate most games, so my opinion probably doesn't help the average gamer lol.

It seems it may not run well on Crossfire systems or something. I've got 2 5850s, 16gb of ram, and an 15-750 at 4.2ghz. It's not a cutting edge system but it should be able to run something like this fine. I've been getting from 25-60fps on Crysis 2 with Ultra settings. In Brink, I went outside and my FPS dropped to like 17!

Considering my system with an 8800GT, 4 GB of Ram, and an overclocked Q6600 STILL runs everything I throw at it fairly well at 1680x1050, yeah... there's no reason that rig should be chugging on Brink.

Yeah, I've got an i5-750 at 3.20GHz and 3.19GHz, a 5750, and 4 GB of RAM and I run both games (Crysis and Brink) just fine at max settings lol. Sounds like it's definitely a problem with Crossfire. My system seems really similar to yours and mine isn't even overclocked at all running both games fine lol. Might wanna look into Crossfire problems, even if you don't get Brink.

When I try an start the game it seems to fail at the "Microsoft VC Redist Package (step 1 of 1)" stage, then the game starts. perhaps that's the culprit. In any case I don't really feel compelled to try to get this particular game working, even at $5.

The discussion became too much about RollingSkull and less about the unbelievable Borderlands deal. If anyone has missed a previous sale on it, this is a brilliant time to pick it up.
Please let us know what happens with your account. That's some scary shit. I would contact CS.

As for Stardock, just wait. The Christmas sale is bound to start next week, if past indicators are correct.
So far no response, but my Steam account still works too. :) I think it was just a weird hiccup. Hopefully they'll reply soon and won't do anything weird like take my access away or something!

Yeah, hopefully all the Stardock games will have really good sales over the holidays. If not now, then later next year I bet. I want to see Elemental on there too! I heard somewhere it wouldn't be, but that seems odd.

How many games is normal for a CAG Steamer to have?

I have 404 games.... :/ .............. I don't want to know how much money I spent, good deals or not.

On the plus side, I have 404 games! :D

Even taking into account what it costs to build a gaming rig, or, in my case, a fancy laptop (which I now wish would have been a desktop, but that's life; desktops are harder to move across the ocean), I think PC gaming, thanks to Steam deals, is actually cheaper than console gaming.
