Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

I'm in the same boat. Bought it for 35 on release, maybe played about 2 hours.

Thanks pROvIs for mentioning the LOTR deal. Probably another game I'll buy but won't play. I need help.
Also LOTR: War in the North is $12.31 with Coupon WARIN-SNOWY-NORTH @ Green Man Gaming. The Game is Steam Works.
Nice one!

Would never have known about this one otherwise. Even better is that I had $7.50 in GMG credit that I earned by getting a free game a couple of years ago, so I ended up getting War In The North for only $4.82!

Woo-To-The-Hoo!

Happens to us all. I got burned on Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines when it was during the summer sale. Grabbed it at $13, went down to $5 like the next week. Story of my life, as that's happened with a ton of titles. Getting nickled and dimed by depreciation. D'oh!
That happens to use all, my friend. Particularly here.

For example, I'm not buying Arkham City at the amazing price of $25 because I know I won't play it until it gets a $10 deal. Thus, I hold back.
I know, but for some reason I keep falling for the same trap..

Luckily I've managed to only buy one thing for myself this sale, everything else so far has been gifts.

Yeah, it pays to be a cheap ass and shoot for the $10 or below. A few games make the exception for me, like when I paid $30 for Fallout:NV (2010 black friday gamestop) but it was $50-60 everywhere else and we all played the hells out of it when I took it home.

That's when it works out.
I've only spent $6.50 so far on three games throughout this sale. You people are just throwing money around.

Just buy me Skyrim already. ;)
you drive a hard bargain, but ok.

I got Arkham City back in August for free with my new graphics card. I dunno if the same deal is going on, but I know if you purchase one of the newer Samsung SSD you also get Arkham City free.

I suppose you can ask yourself a bunch of questions: "Will this be on sale again in the future? Will it be cheaper then? Do I have the time to play this between now and the next sale?"

As an experienced CAG, I know how hard it is to let a deal go. Nevertheless, as a general rule, spending below $10 before the next price drop shouldn't make one feel cheated; When you're a CAG, $5 is a lot different than $20.

My goal this sale is to spend $5 or under per game. Unless it's a collection of games.

Right now I am doing really well.
Fable TLC, Dark Void Zero and Psychonauts for $6

Renegade Ops on Amazon for $3
you drive a hard bargain, but ok.
Is that all it takes, because I have spent less than that buying some cheap DLC. I have a whole wishlist of stuff I would love to have. :D

That's what I'm doing too. Its the only way I can justify spending money on games I may never play
Damn, seems like I am buying more Steamworks games from anywhere but Steam this year.

LOTR WITN

Thats usually me as well. Older titles I often buy on Steam when they get cheap.

However almost all new titles I buy elsewhere if they are steamworks. There are usually too many other better/cheaper options.

I'll wait for today's dailies before getting Deus Ex at Gamersgate. I know it's a slim chance that a possible daily deal will match that price, but I just have to wait another hour...

I am doing that too..but it is not working out as well as I thought. There have been so many great deals at 5 or under that I have still spent almost all of my preset budget for the sale already.

This is the reason I don't set a budget. That way I am not disappointed when I go over.

At the very least, I set an "estimated amount" so I have an idea of how much I "can"/"should" spend.

I like to think it helps. 45 minutes remain.
Hate to ask, but would any kind CAG buy me all four pieces of the Batman: Arkham City DLC ($10.96 on Steam) before the end of the current sale and then gift it to me later today? I'll PayPal you immediately for it and throw in an extra $1 or $2 for the trouble.

I bought an Arkham City Steam gift from a CAG last night but haven't received it yet, and Steam won't let me buy the DLC because I don't own the base game.

PM if interested. Cheers!
I won't let you buy the DLC as a gift for your inventory?

Pssh, I've spent half that. Of course, I already own Valve's full catalog and haven't seen anything other than Orcs Must Die that screams at me to buy it... or that I suspect won't wind up in an indie bundle in a month. :D

Plus, it's 3 days to Christmas. My wife would be pissed if I bought something like Arkham City, which may well be waiting under the tree as we speak.

Oh, I know. Buying anything indie feels like a gamble these days.

This morning it was giving me a message that I couldn't gift it to myself, but now it doesn't seem to have a problem with it. So problem solved!

They still sell PC games in physical form?

My Fiance gave up on buying me games a long time ago. It just doesn't make sense to have her buy me things like that and pay twice as much because she doesn't know where to shop. I wish there was a better way to communicate things like this but its either she stays away or you send a link that says here buy this which ruins all the surprise.

I just ask for the other stuff that I don't like spending money on for christmas. Things like shaving mirrors, appliances, clothes, cookware, small electronics, etc.

I only bought Psychonauts, Max Payne bundle, and the Dungeons of Dredmor DLC. I was extremely tempted to get Chantelise + Recettear but I think I'm gonna pass on most indie games on steam.. I'd rather get them from bundles. I was semi-tempted to get the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. bundle but when I look up the price history, it seems like it's been $4.99 before? Whenever a game has been cheaper on steam, I pass on it unless I plan to play it immediately. I'll buy most of the things I'm interested in as long as they're $5 or less though.

My hubby and I were talking about this last night. We were at some new game store that opened up in the next town, and he commented on how they didn't have PC games at all.

Personally, what with the fact that you can't resell them half them time, it's just easier to get games at a significant discounts through online methods. Retailers don't deal in secondhand PC games, as they're a pain in the ass. Unless you're willing to keep up with each individual item, you may well have a game you can't resell.

Oh, I understand. I never ask anyone to get me games. What with being able to trade for console titles on CAG or Goozex and waiting for major Steam sales, no one can get the deals I can.

I am, however, a fan of asking people to buy me Xbox point cards. But yeah, generally, I treat Christmas as the time to ask for the things I'm not as likely to buy for myself.

I still remember the days where most of the games in an EB were PC games and you could buy it, play it, not like it, and return it within 7 days for your money back. Piracy, DRM, and activation was really the end of that.

I've seen used copies of APB and Tabula Rasa before, and I mean recently. May God have mercy on that retailer's soul.

I do occasionally buy used copies of older games, though. I found System Shock 2 last year and since that game seems to be stuck in licensing limbo for DD services, why the hell not? It was only like $3-5. Unfortunately, it's impossible to run on Vista/7 AFAIK, and you have to perform the Black Sacrament to get it on XP. I may just have to see if I can make a Windows 98 VM for it. Oh Windows 98, I thought I'd quit you.

Ha, I get that, but my wife's an amazing budgeter and deal hound. She's more of a cheapass than I am.

The only thing I can generally find better deals than anyone else are classic games, because traditional sources for those are not your friend.
Yes... but more likely the 360 version. :D
Oh man, I wonder how different it is.

I'm fine with it, the games are so much cheaper than before, and much more convenient. It makes me sad to see console users getting up in arms over digital distribution, kind of reminds me of the days prior to Steam.

Surprisingly I found a store that still lets you do this. So much nostalgia looking at games like Myst, Quake and Sim City in their huge cardboard boxes. Bought a used copy of Bad Mojo from them a few weeks ago.

From what I understand, gameplay-wise it's basically the same, although with less Catwoman DLC issues. Visually, it'd probably only be a small step up from the 360 version for me, as my video card is getting more outdated by the minute.

The problem is this. Say you want to buy a digital game for your Xbox. You will only have ONE place to buy it from, Xbox Marketplace. And the same goes for PSN. Unless they open their doors more to places like Amazon.

The great thing about the PC is the competition. If there was no competition there would never be a need for sales of this magnitude...

Consoles don't and most likely will never have that type or amount of competition and that could just mean higher prices for a very long time. But yes, it is early and hard to tell. And I have even said that we won't see the quality Steam brings to the table for quite some time on Consoles just because of how long it took Steam to not suck...
From what I understand, gameplay-wise it's basically the same, although with less Catwoman DLC issues. Visually, it'd probably only be a small step up from the 360 version for me, as my video card is getting more outdated by the minute.
Ah.

I've only played it on PC, and it is VERY stunning game, I hope the 360 version is not too far behind!
The problem is this. Say you want to buy a digital game for your Xbox. You will only have ONE place to buy it from, Xbox Marketplace. And the same goes for PSN. Unless they open their doors more to places like Amazon.

You are most likely right on all accounts. Especially with how Nintendo treats online shops.

Looks like Blur may be a daily? It's $5 now, pretty sure it was $10 before. Was Avadon $2.50 as well? Seem to remember that being $5, but the prices are starting to blend together.

There's an unofficial install fix that I'm told works for Win 7 and that helps the game run fairly smoothly on that OS. Since System Shock 2 has an avid fan base, I'm inclined to believe it. I have the fix on my computer but haven't had a chance to try it yet. Happy to send you the name if you'd like.

There was a huge difference in fidelity between Arkham Asylum on 360 and PC and I imagine its only more so on City but I havent played the console version to tell. However obviously that depends on you having the hardware to handle it.

Definitely, would appreciate a push in the right direction. :D I've been dying to play it for a while but gave up hope when I couldn't get it working on my old Windows XP box.

That's true, I have a GTX 560 and I still can't run with all of the DirectX 11 on.

Has anyone played Renegade Ops? Just watched a couple of the vids, it looks pretty fun, although if I grab this game I'll have another reason to finally get a 360 controller dongle for my PC (sorry wallet :( )

Also, I grabbed Medieval II Gold for $1.99  from the Amazon sale - will that activate on Steam? Even if it doesn't, for that price I'll deal with it, plus I'm looking forward to trying that LOTR style mod for this game.

Lord I thought my console backlog was bad.
