Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Yeah.. was able to run a couple of brand new characters with the help of another CAG. So if you have some high level people willing to help you out, you can get the achievement no problem and you'll get about 14 levels or so in the process.
Thanks for this! It was very much appreciated.

Is anybody else having problems opening gifts? I keep getting the "oh nooooes, some kind of error has occurred" error.

I'm trying to open the Skyrim gift I sent to myself (long story) and I can view the game in my gifts but I only have the options to view the Skyrim store page or send the gift, which I've already sent to myself twice. But every time I try to open it I get that error. I've switched servers and that hasn't fixed it.
Re: Dungeon Defenders Xmas achievement

The "Recommended level: 30" for the Xmas map is quite quite quite misleading. We just managed it with a level 28 and a level 70. The positioning of towers etc. isn't too bad, you basically block off every entrance (posted our solution here - http://steamcommunity.com/id/Flowette/screenshot/631860948262784264), but the boss spawns with around 900k HP. Given that all of your towers disappear just before he spawns, you're kind left with not much time to get ready.

I'd recommend that if you want to go for this, you do so with at least one experienced player. I just think that this is quite a harsh map and even on "Easy" it's pretty hard work.

Fun, though ;)
Hey watch it, I'm level 30 after that map now! Ellie has feelings you know :p Thanks a ton for the help. It wasn't without its challenges. To add to his notes, I would recommend at least two people constantly alternating grabbing presents.

You could try the link in the You've Got A Gift email, which redeems the gift in your Steam client. Well, it used to... maybe it's all gone Trading Window now!
So I just built a new rig this year and most of my games are older. The Batman games.

I cannot figure out where to put this damn Revenge of the Titans save. I don't have either of the places they mentioned to put the save...

EDIT: Never mind, it randomly showed up. Good lord, I wish I hadn't seen my prize for that achievement. 50% off Railworks 3: Train Simulator 2012.

Psydero! :D
I can help out anyone else with the Dungeon Defenders achievement if they need it, just PM me.

Any thoughts on which Dungeon Defenders to get? Either the Amazon version for 3.74 that comes with some sort of exclusive DLC, or the Steam version as part of a 4 pack that I think also comes with some exclusive DLC for 2.81?

I know both versions register on Steam so I guess basically what I want to know is the free Amazon DLC better then the free DLC that comes with the 4 pack on Steam and is it worth a buck more?

I'd say the Steam exclusives are better.

I won Frozen Synapse yesterday... problem is, I bought the soundtrack edition a few days ago. Also, I can't trade it until Jan. 20th. I'm using an Apple iMac, but since this was a Steam gift, I'm guessing that it will download for a PC if I traded the gift to someone with a PC.

I'm not participating in the trading otherwise, since by the time I can trade this I think the holiday "coal" trading will be over. If anyone is willing to trade a game that's available for Mac and around the same value as Frozen Synapse ($15 regular price), please PM me.

Just to note again, I can't do the trade until Jan. 20th.

You should be able to gift it.
Anyone have thoughts on the Two Worlds 2 dlc?
I'm also curious about this, can't seem to find any reviews from major sites. $30 for 12 hours of gameplay seemed excessive, but $10 seems about right. I'm tempted ... is Steam the only place this DLC is available for PC, because it doesn't seem to be listed as a product you can buy anywhere in-store or on Amazon?

Gamersgate and Impulse both sell it as downloadable content.
I think the only way to get a physical copy is the Velvet/GOTY Edition that is supposed to be coming out soon.

I finally won a game! The Beat Hazard achievement won me FlatOut. I already own FlatOut, but the prospect of gifting/trading a game is much more exciting than a lame coupon or a lump of coal.
So if I hated the SPAZ demo, I should probably skip it, right?
What you have in the demo is pretty much what you do for the rest of the game, so skipping it would probably be a good idea. I kinda liked it because it reminded me of EVE expect without taking 20 mins to travel from point A to B.
So if I hated the SPAZ demo, I should probably skip it, right?
I traded an extra copy of Deus Ex GOTY for a copy of SPAZ, and I wish I could trade back. I love shmups, and I actually enjoyed Microbots...but dear lord.

Just bought SPAZ so I could trade it for 4 coal and HiB3. What do I get when I craft my coal? A fuckin coupon (kings bounty platinum edition). Steam should make it so coal at least guarantees you a game.
The trailer for Serious Sam: The Random Encounter makes the game look fantastic. Thoughts?
GiantBomb had a quick look about it and they seemed to genuinely like it and thought it was a great take on Serious Sam as an RPG. May give you an idea of if the game looks fun when it's actually being played.

spent quite some time today getting the dungeon defenders achievment, gave me my 7th piece of coal. Crafted the coal and won dungeon defenders lol.

Started trying to get the Revenge of the Titans achievement ... until I realized that you really have to already have a mastery of the game's mechanics in order to even get close to achieving it ... so I gave up ;-p

Yeah, I really wanted to try this but I don't have the time this week for frustration. Having said that, I'm going to boot up SpaceChem for the first time to earn that achievement and boot up Flight Control HD (again) to earn that one, too. I totally suck at FC but I want that winter achievement. I have to land about 150+ more planes before that windy level opens up (you can tell I never play this game unless there's a Steam promo like this :p)

Also... does using a savegame to get any of these achievements make us ineligible for the grand coal prize? What about the Team Fortress 2 workaround?

If that were the case, there'd be no valid entries

With everyone saying that the Dungeon Defenders achievement was hard, I went back and played it again. I had no problems beating it solo with a level 28 apprentice, and was never in danger of losing for lack of time or getting overrun. For anyone who's attempting to do the achievement solo and is having difficulty, here's how I'd recommend doing it:

First, level an apprentice to 25-30. The higher the level, the easier it'll be, but 25 is the minimum level I'd recommend. The reason for this is to gain access to the Pyro TF2 pet, which makes running through creeps much easier (as it does AoE damage with slight knockback). Allocate at least 50 points from leveling into tower range, and then divide up the remaining amount into tower damage and tower attack rate. For gear, find pieces that give decent bonuses to tower attack, tower range, and tower attack rate. None of the other stats really matter, but if you can get a few points into tower health, speed, hero damage, and hero health (priority in that order), it'll make things easier. Also, you should have a weapon that does decent physical damage (100+) and has at least +4 projectiles (either as base or from weapon leveling), as you'll be counting on it and your Pyro pet to clear the path as you make your way from tree to tree.

For the map, play it on easy. You can grab a present and start the level right away, as the creeps won't attack the trees until you place the first present and they drop enough mana as you run by that you never need to open any chests. Run to the first tree that you need to deliver a present to and immediately drop a lightning tower next to it, preferably out of the way of the incoming creeps. Now take a look at where the creeps are coming from (you can open your map with shift) and then figure out where to place a pair of magic missile towers. You want to place them as close to the tree as possible, facing outward. If you can't figure out where to place your towers, put one facing the mob of creeps you can see and then put the other directly opposite of it. If you find your tower placement is subpar, you can adjust it later (place a new tower first, then remove your old one if you're doing it midwave). The amount of defensive units (DU) you have available increases each wave, so you should always have enough DU to place new towers without having to sell any of the old ones. Two trees potentially need more than two towers: the tree immediately to the left of the sack of presents (the room with the sack of presents needs to be covered), and the tree up the stairs in the middle of the map (wyverns come from behind, and the staircase needs to be covered). Other than those two points, you should only need two magic missile towers and a lightning tower to defend the tree indefinitely. Upgrade towers when you feel like it, but the base towers should be strong enough that you don't need to upgrade anything. If you feel that a point needs more defense in later waves, put up a fireball tower (by waves 9-10, you'll have spare DU that you aren't using).

Now, for wave 10 and the boss. Wave 10 isn't any different than wave 9 (other than tougher enemies), but what you want to do is make sure you don't open any chests. This gives you a little extra mana for which you can improve your boss dps. Once wave 10 is complete, all of your towers will disappear and you'll have 60 DU with which to build defenses for the boss. Santa will crash near the tree directly south of the sack of presents (when you take the south exit up the stairs and jump down the wall, it's that one) and the boss will spawn in the northwest, so build accordingly. Set up defenses south of the tree and east of the tree to hold off minion waves (I used two magic missile, one fireball, and one lightning tower to ensure no leaks, but you can get by with less) and then use your remaining DU to set up defenses on the west side to augment your boss dps. I set up two magic missile towers to guard the immediate tree area just in case, and then moved up the ramp to set up the remaining towers. Face all of them up the ramp and wait for the boss timer to finish counting down. Once the boss appears, you have two options: kite him up the ramp as far away from Santa as you possibly can, or kite him down to the towers you setup earlier. For the former, it'll take forever to kill the boss but you'll never be in danger of losing, and for the latter, the boss will die faster (there's really no drawback). For either option, prepare to die many, many times before he does, as you aren't geared or specced to tank him or kill him quickly. For the entirely of the boss fight, you'll walk up to him, attack him, and keep his attention until he kills you, then repeat until he's dead. Rebuild any towers if they fall (just point them at him and he'll walk over to attack them after he kills you) and you've got the achievement.

For the TL;DR version: Level a tower apprentice to level 30 and the achievement is easily soloable.

Not to be an ass, but I can't imagine you're going to get a lot of takers for trades if you want something worth $15 for Frozen Synapse. For one, that price gives you two copies of the game on Steam. It's also been included in an indie bundle. That's going to make that value you're asking for a hard trade to come by. Just something to consider.

It's been included in 2 indie bundles, actually, and one was completely free for a few days (although it didnt give a steam key for it). I wouldn't value it more than $5 personally, and I think it'd be difficult to find someone to trade more in value than that.

It's still $1.50 if you get it from the littlebigbunch bundle.. won't give a steam key though.
For the TL;DR version: Level a tower apprentice to level 30 and the achievement is easily soloable.
How long does it take to do that? are there any tricks for leveling quicker?

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood: buy now or wait? I can wait for the newest one, but I don't want to jump on this for $14 if it's going to drop soon.

Man, Rise of the Immortals sucks. Can't get assists worth a damn. What I need to find is a group that gangs up on opponents so that we all can share in assists. Instead, I die a lot.

Yeah I found the game to be an exercise in frustration. Kept dying a lot, everybody on the team was out for assists so nobody would finish off the enemies so I ended up just uninstalling. Not worth the headache for a piece of coal IMO.

Ubisoft games tend to drop steadily. Less than they used to, but they still depreciate well quickly for cheapasses. Unless you really want it now, you'd probably be safe to wait and catch it at least $4 cheaper next sale.

People would be better off focusing on the kill, since more often than not you will get more assists that way.

I agree, my problem was I couldn't find a game where everyone didn't focus on attacking one enemy then running away when it was near death leaving me to be ganged up on. Maybe I just had bad luck.
I'd say the Steam exclusives are better.
Thanks! Went with the Steam version of the Dungeon Defenders. Since all the DLC is on sale does anyone have any recommendations on which DLC to pick up?

I really miss the Summer Sale meta game. Being able to choose prizes and plotting out what I wanted to work toward and which games to play toward that end was a lot more fun than filling my inventory with coal and coupons.

Still gameless at 13 coal and 7 coupons.
