Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Big ones are usually Summer and Winter. However, most of the major holidays have a minor sale. I'm surprised there wasnt anything for Valentines day. I'm pretty sure they did something for it last year. I'm pretty sure they will do something for Easter.

Most of the big sales for PC right now are coming from Amazon and Green Man Gaming. Many of which activate on Steam.
This. Also, I doubt Steam is going to run any major sales until at least the coupons from the Coal Winter event expire, so that means early March.

I agree with the easter event hunch, in fact I'd bet money we'll be hunting for easter eggs instead of coal in April.
Are there usually any big sales this time of year? I know there's the summer sale and holiday sale which I missed out on this year, but just built my new PC and I'm looking to build the backlog with some new stuff.
What the others said. There might be an Easter mini-sale or something along those lines but the next really big one is summer.

If you can hold out until then, there will be tons on sale. If you tend to like most games from a particular publisher than the publisher packs offered during the summer and winter sales are a great deal.

Just an observation: coupons won in the holiday sale expire on 1st March.

I've only got a couple that I might take up (75% off etc.), the rest I think I'll let expire. I'll admit that I'll miss checking my inventory to see if I had a coupon for the daily deal, even if I didn't want the damn game

i'm in the same boat. got a brand new pc, now it's loading up time. i'm scouring steam, amazon and others for decent deals. amazon had some very good deals just this past week. i'm hoping to find a few good daily deals on steam now.

Finally built a new rig since my last rig during half life 2 days.

Are the games for windows steamable or do i have to juggle applications

Depends on what you want. Most games can be purchased through steam however it may not be the best deal. Check out the amazon thread that's stickied. Lots of deals updated all the time in there

Most games come to steam. The only notable exceptions I can think of are EA and Blizzard.
Shows $29.99 for me. My guess is you are using the wrong country/currency. It probably won't let you check out.
In the steam app on the PC it shows 29 for me but if you go to http://store.steampowered.com/ in a web browser and search for it it shows 17.99 for me there.

Edit hmm you may be right I just used chrome to test it out and its showing 29.99 wtf and in firefox it says 17.99 weird.

Speaking of GMG deals, today it's Saint's Row 3 for 50% off, US$ 24.99, Steamworks title.

Any thoughts? I wasn't crazy about GTA IV, but loved Just Cause 2. Is SR3 more like the former or the latter?

SR3 is closer to JC2. Its just crazy fun. I'd wait until midnight PST and pick it up for the same price @ amazon though.

Thanks for the reply. I can't get it from Amazon since I'm not in the USA. I'm considering the GMG deal, but I just bought Alan Wake, which I'm enjoying quite a bit, and SR3 will probably be 50% off, or lower, in the Summer Sale.

Ah, sorry I forgot you had said you weren't in the USA (Brazil I think?) in the past. In that case you are right GMG is the better deal. SR3 is worth $25 but its not the best deal on the game. It has been cheaper and some of our fellow cags are selling copies on the trading forums for around $15.

Thanks for the tip, for 15 bucks it's better, but I'll still think about it (damn backlog!). And yes, I'm from Brazil.

BTW, GMG will have a week of deals and they have already announced Deus Ex Human Revolution for 75% off this Friday (Steamworks title) and LA Noire (not Steamworks) also for 75% off this Thursday.

This game has garbage performance on a lot of systems, complete waste of money for me. They still haven't patched it after 3 months. Buy at your own risk.

And I'll go on record saying it was one of the most entertaining games I played in 2011. It chugs a bit while driving, but it's a great ride from start to finish, particularly at a discounted price.

It works for some people, I'm sure it would be a great game if I could play without the frame rate constantly dipping to 20 fps.

Some good deals in the amazon thread. The question is do I want to add another 4GB of ram to my system, or pick up some games I probably won't play for 3 years? Ehhhh fuck it I'll probably just get both haha

Lol I'll give you a preview.

It was an awful indie atrocity. They spent way too much time trying to be cute and artsy and not near enough time on mechanics. In short, it is a failure.

:) Just kidding. I picked it up in one of the sales past and haven't got around to playing it yet.

Lol I'm picking it up. I'm a huge fan of old school point and click adventures. Played all the old Sierra and Lucas arts games

Is the Steam Holiday gift trading thread the most current Steam trading forum? I could have sworn there was a thread just for trading, but I'm failing at search.
I'm somewhat tempted to pick up cities XL, been wanting to get a decent city builder.
Are they still using Securom on the 2012 version? The Steam page doesn't state either way, but on Gamersgate it is showing Securom and Focus has been really stubborn and lame about insisting on keeping their additional DRM on Steam versions of their games so I don't have much hope.

re: Ceville

I have had it sitting in my list of bajillion games. Like I pretty much say for the rest of them, I probably should get around to playing it one day. :p

If you are a fan of point and click games, I think you will enjoy Ceville. Its not the best adventure game ever by any means, but its very enjoyable if you like these kind of games. I bought it for around $20 and felt satisfied with the purchase. Game took me a good 10+ hours to get through so its fairly lengthy.

While you're waiting for the summer sale (around the 4th of July), there is one often overlooked sale on Steam that's always there -- the Valve Complete Pack. $100 gets you all the Half-Life, Left for Dead, Portal, and Counterstrike you can handle.

If you can wait for a seasonal sale, it's usually $50. But for people who are new to Steam, and don't already have half of these games, it's still a fine deal at $100.

Getting it for half the price is worth the wait as far as I am concerned.

Seriously, don't buy anything now unless it's DOTD or Mid/Weekend Madness, just start saving up for the summer sale now. You won't regret it.

And right now you could probably buy 25 dollars worth of games on steam and trade someone for it. People have been having a hard time moving the ones they got in the winter gift pile...at least from what ive seen

I'd be happy to donate a 50% off Valve coupon - asking nothing in return. Brings the price to $49.99 right now.

Yeah, I actually had a fellow CAG give me Half Life 2 and Portal the other day just because they got them during the gift pile and everyone else had them. I still have yet to purchase most of the Valve games on Steam.

I got Half Life 2 Episode 1 free during the gift pile. Paid 2.49 a piece for Day of Defeat Source and Garry's Mod. Have L4D 1 and 2, Portal 2, and Orange Box for the 360 though.

Saints Row 3 ran like a dream on my system. Well... no, Alan Wake ran like a dream. SR3 ran pretty good.

Of course, it was a tremendous disappointment but it isn't awful at least. It will drop lower though. The DLC is a total shameless ripoff, too.

To add some color to RollingSkulls comment on being tremendously disappointed...

From what I've been able to tell, you're far more likely to feel this way if you've played previous games in the series as this one, apparently, comes across as Saint's Row Lite. If, like me, this is your first foray into the series, you're far more likely to be giddy at the ridiculous amount of fun the little world provides.

Me and the GF absolutely loved Saints Row the Third. Was a great game to play through. But then it was also our first Saints Row, so take that into account :)

Same here. I stress that Saints Row 3 is an amazing game with tons of humor and makes any GTA game look like a complete joke. Not that GTA is bad mind, however it's impossible to compare them as Saints Row 3 was just plain fun. Want a tank? Here ya go! How about a heli? Sure thing! ^_^
Mirror's Edge is the daily deal today.

75% off $19.99 now $4.99
I got it the last time it went $4.99. Like the rest of the EA Games, buying it from Steam is the only way to get it on Steam.

If anyone cares, it doesn't register on Origin because there is no key. The Time Trials DLC is Origin only, but I did find a fan made mod a while back that was free and basically the same thing as the Time Trials.

Supposedly, some people have gotten sympathetic EA reps to register it on Origin for them, but don't count on it.

I don't think Mirror's Edge has been lower than 5 dollars on Steam. I got it myself some three years ago for the same price.

The game itself is interesting but at times infuriatingly frustrating. It looks beautiful but the combat is pretty lame and there are times when you have to make some very tricky button combinations to advance. I gave up on it after getting stuck in an area and haven't tried again since.
