Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

The Frozenbyte Bundle includes Trine, for anyone who was on the fence with it a few days ago.

Edit: Went ahead and grabbed this. I already have Trine, but I figured that I may as well further inflate my backlog for charity.
Pay what you want for Frozen Synapse with a new Humble Indie Bundle. You get a Steam Key and can help out charity.

Its interesting that you can get the full Frozenbyte bundle as well for paying over the average. I wonder if the average will fluctuate up and down over the course of the promo. I am tempted to wait and see if the older bundles get lumped in like last time, but Im worried if I wait, the average price will increase.
It is the same bundle just with Frozen Synapse added in. Not bad if you missed it I guess...
You only get the Frozenbyte Bundle if you pay over the average price. If you don't, you just get a copy of Frozen Synapse.

bought rift, i liked the free trial and this comes with a month of time

went ahead and paid the extra 2.50 to get the digital deluxe edition though, can't argue with a turtle mount for less than the cost of a decent cheeseburger
Too many humble bundles. They're running a good thing into the ground.
Sry you hate amazing deals.
Sry you hate amazing deals.
I already own all of the games, that's not really the point. The HIB generated a lot of goodwill for showcasing some unknown indie games and packaging them with one or two "heavy hitters (World of Goo, Braid)". Too many of these bundles with some games of questionable quality (not saying Frozen Synapse is) dilutes the brand and will make people stop caring in the long run. See: Guitar Hero.

I dropped $2 on Frozen Synapse. I'm not terribly interested in the game and wouldn't have bought it for anything over $2.50 on Steam because of that. Also, I already have Trine and have zero interest in the Shadowground games (I tried a demo a long time ago and didn't like it). The other two don't seem very good to me, so overall I felt it was too much to go over the average ($4.50 at the time). Just hope if they add anything more that's not gonna bite me in the ass and they give it to everyone who has already bought at any price.
When Frozen Synapse was on sale on Steam I heard that it was a bit on the hard side; could anyone confirm this?
It's hard, but you don't invest much time in to it. It's not like Civilization where games are really long, you spend a few seconds to a few minutes, depending on how intricate your plans are, setting up moves. You have somewhere from 5-15 turns per game, with some exceptions on the short and long ends. If you lose, you haven't spent much time on it, so you're free to experiment and try again.

I really dug the game, but it didn't hold my interest. I'll probably revisit it soon though.

Frozen Synapse is really good but the tutorial is lousy as hell. It is NOT a squad combat simulation at all, at least in the X-Com/Silent Storm style. You need to think a different way.

Here's what you need to know to kick this game in the jimmies. When a unit engages another, they fire at each other, but this is just an illusion. It has no effect. Stray bullets are not real. What happens is that an invisible timer kicks in. Once that timer hits zero, a kill shot is fired. This killshot timer is effected mostly by if the unit was running, walking, or still when it is fired. Crouching changes nothing and is only useful for breaking LOS. Edging around a corner for cover is nothing except it counts you as moving. Range also counts.

Timers reset if targets switch, so you can send out a distraction target and get him to cover before the timer goes to zero while your other guy lines up a kill shot. If your sims cannot make a scenario where you win a gunfight, you can always try to break LOS before the killshot, too.

The killshot timer is way fast for shotgunners but they cannot do range. Snipers are slower but range is one of their specialties.

I highly recommend The Binding of Isaac which is 10% off until Oct. 5th. It's an absolute gem at ~$5.

My only caveat is that there's no official controller support and, as was the case with Super Meat Boy, it's poorly optimized and in need of a few patches. (one was already released today)

The game felt so much better with a controller. I just couldn't play it with a keyboard/mouse.

It does.

I'd like to give a -1 to Binding of Isaac. Not a fan.

On the plus side, I do want to upvote the Gundemonium whatever games, which impress me.

Also, the second there's a drop on Blocks that Matter, I'll be on that like a troll on a politics thread.
I'd like to give a -1 to Binding of Isaac. Not a fan.
What rubbed you the wrong way if you don't mind me asking? (the technical stuff is pretty egregious but I tend to give indie devs a couple of weeks to patch things up)

I felt the Zelda-style maps were a definite attempt to STAB the nostalgia nerve, rather than an invocation. They served no purpose other than to try to dig up cheap nostalgia votes. It felt insulting. There's no puzzle-work in the game nor a Zelda style repertoire of goodies. It's just a twin-stick shooter with random power ups and no extra lives. Yes, you get rare bombs and there's a hidden room here and there and a shop or two all trying to emulate the NES Zelda but these are the window dressings of that game. Not what made it good.

The levels and combat actually felt lifeless as a result of this design. I just was not having fun with it even as the goody drops began to shift in and out of my favor with different runs.

Not a fan of the design/theme/what-have-you either so that didn't help to smooth over the cracks.

As I played, I couldn't help but think how phoned in the random generation made the game feel. You could cut a Contra game up into slices and throw random enemy patterns in it and only give you two lives and one random powerup at the halfway point and it would be never be as good as the straightforward Contra game. It may be harder and have more variety but I'd take the designed Contra over it any day.

Yeah, it may lift the map layout style from Zelda's dungeons but it feels way more like a randomly generated Smash TV.

It's a casual roguelike and I like that it eases people into that genre. (then Steam users can graduate to Dungeons of Dredmor for another $5)
Oh, hey, it's by the guys who made COIL.

I might keep my eye on this one.
COIL is quite honestly the worst game I've ever played. It should have been called "What the fuck?" And I'm so glad it's free, because a six minute abstract game about what seems like rape and an abortion is not something I would pay money for. Thanks for pointing out that it's made by the same people. I'll be sure to avoid it. :whistle2:&

In the same way that playing CoD or CS would ease people into ARMA or Ace Combat would ease people into IL2, maybe (By which I mean LOL NO. The games involved are hugely different). Permadeath and random generation are characteristics of roguelikes but they hardly define it. The roguelike quality runs deeper in the gameplay experience than just those surface settings. BoI still isn't anything close to a real roguelike.

Besides, if you want to introduce people to roguelikes, Nethack is already nigh perfect for that. Just give people a really good example and let them decide if the genre has worth to them. Teases the perfect mix of tight scope and intuitive-ish depth. DoD is just kinda dull.

I didn't really like COIL either. My second statement wasn't intended as a reflection of the first. My thoughts were more along the lines of "So this is what they've been up to since."

Net*hack is really the only roguelike anyone ever needs. All others that I've played have just made me wish I were playing Net*hack.

Me too! :D Man is that game awesome. That and Deus Ex are my two favorite games ever.

Its not really a sale, but I wanted to point out that the first two supreme commander games are now on steam, and are worth picking up. Though they can be somewhat computer intensive.

Lots of deals for this weekend.

Blood Bowl $8 80% off
Dungeon Siege 3 $24.99 50% off
Post Apocalyptic Mayhem $4.99 50% off and free weekend

And Starscape for today at 66% off for $3.40.

It looks interesting, but has anyone played it?

Haven't played Starscape, demo on Steam though.

I do own the 3 weekend deals though. Here is my thoughts for anyone.

Blood Bowl. Good game, complicated at first and takes a bit to get use too but once you do it is quite good. It is a tactical game, don't let the football exterior make you think otherwise.

Dungeon Siege 3, I did enjoy this game a lot, I know it got a lot of hate cause it wasn't a true Dungeon Siege game though. I never played the original two Dungeon Siege games just so you know.

Post Apocalyptic Mayhem. Fun little racer, has some bugs, but the game is fun in spurts, play a couple of quick races then do something else. Free weekend so you can see how you feel about it.

Thinking about Blood Bowl, I mean it is 80% off, which is a HUGE discount, but it somehow seems overpriced at $40 to start with (or maybe that is just me)

Will wait for more opinions before deciding for sure....

Blood Bowl has securom. Also make sure the latest release is on sale. They M&B'd/SF'd us with a rerelease.

Starscape could be better but is still pretty good all things considered. Liked it well enough but was happy to see the back of it

That and Crawl: Stone Soup There's room in the genre for some of the ideas of Japanese roguelikes and DoD, but they simply feel like lesser, inferior games.

Though I got bored with Nethack after a brief, torrid love affair and have found nothing in the genre that comes close or is worth rekindling that.

I remain against most attempts to give other genres "roguelike elements" partly because they focus on the swift death and random maps in games where good map design is a LOT more important than a roguelike.

Huh. $8 still feels like more than I want to pay for Blood Bowl. Especially since I remember reading, when it came out, that it was still pretty buggy. That, and I suspect it's a game that I'll play once or twice and probably not touch.

I'm actually kind of surprised - it's been out for almost a year and no price drop.

It's very tempting - it's been on my steam wishlist for a while now, but I think, ultimately, I'll be passing on it. Halve the sale price, and I'll bite.

Man it seems like with Dungeon Siege 3 Square made very stupid choice they possibly could. The newest one that iv found out is that the system requirements are actually pretty high. I dont understand why for a Diablo style game you need to design the game to need higher requirements then something like Dead Space 2!

No only Supreme Commander 2. I'm tempted to just pick up the gold edition now, but I'll try to hold off on it.
