Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

When does the winter sale typically start? And is it as good as the summer sale? GTA series is tempting but summer sale was great.

I still regret not getting the PoP series for like $15. Also would be nice to see Psychonauts on sale.
End of December?
That's about right. I can never remember if it starts before or after Christmas, but it's sometime around there.

And don't forget there will probably be a mini-sale event happening for the weekend of Black Friday.
According to my purchase history, the winter sale started on the 20th last year.
Hm, I wish it wasn't so close to Christmas. Kinda hard to buy for myself after spending so much on others... Then again, some of my friends will be getting Steam gifts for Christmas, I guess. :D

Maybe I'll put $20 a month into my Steam wallet for the next three months to sort of "save" for it.

GTA Complete wasn't this cheap even during the Summer sale, if I remember correctly.
I feel your pain. I make an effort to play "behind the curve" too; it makes gaming way more affordable. I stacked my Steam backlog in chronological order and I play from oldest to newest, generally. I recently finished Mass Effect 1 and the first STALKER game; working on the first Witcher game now. I'm like 4 years back, lol, which means my 4850 card that I got for about $100 18 months ago is still a powerhouse! When the 5850s or 6870s hit about $100, I'll upgrade again.

Let us know how it goes with the 4350. From what I hear, GTA IV is not well optimized for PC, even after several iterations. Everything I read says to turn the "draw distance" setting way down. Maybe that will help you.
Heh, I've been behind the times with video games my whole life (up until a few years ago when I started getting current gen consoles and new games. :p)

Also, GTA 4 is playable with the 4350 (@ 40FPS) but it's at the lowest setting across the board, so it definitely doesn't look very nice.

I was back and forth as well but that UK price pushed me over $8 for the complete pack is a steal.

Jeeze, I wish I knew about that price sooner. I only have 35 seconds to find somebody willing to gift it to me for that price.

Oh well, there will be other sales. It's not like I was gonna play them right away anyway.

Exactly, there was the treasure hunt a few days before Thanksgiving and then starting on the day before Thanksgiving there was the start of the Thanksgiving/Black Friday sale with packs of games on sale like Deus Ex, Counterstrike, HL2, Defense Grid, etc. The first 5 game indie packs also appeared at this same time.

Excellent news. I didn't get my gaming PC until January, so I wasn't really paying attention to Steam much before then. I know I bought a couple of those $5 indie packs last year, but that was it.

So... has anyone actually played the games in the daily deal? I have dabled in the Myst series, but was surprised at how many little details I had to remember for the puzzles. I have not played the other games in the pack.

I bought this pack the last time it was on sale. Haven't played them yet, aside from having played Myst Masterpiece and Riven a decade ago. I do look forward to playing these, though they're not anywhere in sight of the top of my backlog.

Within the past couple years, I delved back into Myst and found the experience still haunting and moving, but a bit diminished with the passing of time. Once, the game's graphics and effects were really great. Now...the magic just isn't the same.

Still, if you've never played Myst, I could recommend the collection at that price. Just be prepared to use walkthroughs to at least get some hint-nudges.
anyone think theres going to be a halloween sale? havent used steam much and want to get L4D2 soon...
Last year it started on the 28th, so we don't have to wait very long to find out.

Guess "The First Templar" tanked hard since it was only released 5 months ago and now it's already at a 75% sale point.

Hmm.. Grid does look tempting, though..

I started Back to the Future episode 1 and felt it sucked. It's just a point and click, I wouldn't call it an adventure unless they change up the formula later on. To be fair I only got up to the part when they investigate Doc's office.

It's been awhile since I played it, but isn't that the first 10 minutes of the game. What formula are you talking about? The one where you point and click on things to solve puzzles? That's what a point-and-click adventure game is.

While I was holding out for some of the sim racers...Grid might be nice. Does anyone know if the game works with the DF:GT wheel and how well it plays using it?

Doc's place is indeed the first scene of the BttF games. I'm pretty sure the title sequence doesn't even occur until after you exit the building
and the Delorean appears
. You're judging the series based on half of the tutorial.

I think I'll pick up Back to the Future. I've enjoyed everything from TellTale so far so I think it's time to add another one to the collection.

Back to the future is fantastic! Definitely recommend it if you are a fan of the adventure genre and/or TellTale Games.

The daily deal looks like a definite pass though. Only a 57 metacritic....not good.

^This.

I really enjoyed the BttF games. Telltale deliberately designed the game to be fun and relaxed, not Grim Fandango hard (which I love to death [pun intended], but c'mon, that mail tube puzzle was obtuse not to mention the infuriating wheelbarrow tube puzzle in the forest - WTF). I think they made the right decision to allow the widest swath of movie fans play the game, enjoy the great performances, and actually make progress in the game.

$10 is a CAGgeriffic deal and I bet that people will absolutely dig the performances in the game. AJ Locascio is stunning as Marty McFly and young Doc is also wonderfully cast.

People's thoughts on GRID? I lean more toward arcade style racing games. Drifting and such is fine but if I need to do crazy shifting maneuvers or race with absolute Tronlike precision early on then I'm out. If it means anything I loved Burnout Revenge (PSP), Test Drive Le Mans 24 Hours (Dreamcast), Ridge Racer 4 (PS), and Motor Toon Grand Prix 2 (PS, Japan - funkiest bunch of cars in a game ever - the train was the best vehicle in the game :D).

Most adventure games are defined as Point and Click. I'm not quite sure how you can count that against it.

That being said the games are a great extension of the universe if you are a fan and telltale always makes quality products but I'm pretty sure they have been less expensive and will be again with all the sales coming up.

This is the cheapest it's ever been for the full series, and it's not likely to go much cheaper (with the outside chance of a 75% of sale some time). TellTale games tend to retain their high default price for a full season. Tales of Monkey Island, which is a couple years old, is still $35 for the full five episode season. Sam & Max season one, which is even older, is still $30. Back to the Future is only a couple months old, and you can get it for $10 right now. That's a solid deal no matter how you look at it.

As noted, it's not a difficult game, so it can appeal to a broad range of gamers, even those who haven't spent hours and hours on point and click (if we HAVE to make the distinction) adventure games. The joy of the game is the story and characters. Unless you're completely anti-point and click, it's well worth picking up.

I thought I had picked it up for $7.50 but looking back I think it was $12.50. That being said if anyone doesn't have any telltale or few telltale games, wait until the next major sale and buy the telltale pack. It's usually $50 and is their whole catalog.

Well yeah it's a point and click game but I wouldn't consider that an "adventure" game and that's what I was trying to say. Maybe I'm unfamiliar with terms used in that genre, I don't know. The word adventure just sounded misleading, if that's what they're commonly known as then I was wrong, sorry.

Some have adapted it in the console world to mean something more along the lines of zelda but that is really "Action-Adventure"

For the history of the genre read here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adventure_game

Nowadays, especially on pc, it is almost synonymous with point and click.

Most adventures don't really get going until you've played for more than 10 minutes.

Good caveat about the TellTale complete pack. That's definitely the way to go if you don't have many of their games (I did that myself during the summer sale). If you bought the complete pack prior to Back to the Future, however, this is the best way to re-complete your TellTale love.
Saw this on SD so you guys may want to give it a go.

Currently, IGN is having a promo that if you sign up with their prime service you get a free copy of Orcs Must Die. They'll give you a code for the game and you can activate it on Steam; it's worth $15. Just go ahead and cancel before the month is up to avoid the $6.95 monthly charge.
