Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Weekend deal is the Star Wars complete pack. Makes sense with the release of the Blu Rays next week. I would jump on this bundle for $50 if they had finally put KOTOR II up but they haven't. I wish they still put the individual games on sale because I have all the newer ones and all I really want are the Jedi Knight titles.

I think I have all of those that I want...the Jedi Knight ones, KOTOR, the Force Unleashed games (and all without activation too)...so...thankfully nothing tempting for me right now

I hate that we can't sell/trade/giveaway the games we already have in these big packs. There just aren't any packs that I won't have something in I think. :(

Does anyone know why KOTOR 2 isn't on Steam?

My backlog is getting huge after picking up the Paradox complete pack, but do you guys recommend the Star Wars pack if I don't have any of those games?
Is Bit.Trip Beat a difficult game? It looks pretty hectic from the preview video. Can anyone recommend this deal?
Yes. Bit.Trip can be an EXTREMELY difficult game. The lack of mid level checkpoints and simply not knowing how to deal with off the wall patterns can screw you out of a full level's work often enough.

But even in light of this, I can't recommend it enough for $2.50! Bit.Trip BEAT (and the other Bit.Trips for that matter) is easily one of my favorite games this console generation, and provides a very unique (and fun as hell!) experience. If you're a fan of Pong, rhythmy sort of games (It constructs the song around the beats you hit), or chiptunes in general it's pretty much a must-buy. (Or at least a must-buy when at this price!)

If you haven't played any of those games and you love star wars then yes. Kotor is considered to be one of the best RPGs, Battlefront is a fun shooter, Jedi Academy games are my favorite and worth every penny.

Thanks, picked it up as well as the daily deal.

Wow. That's high praise, or you missed a lot of games this console generation ;)
How do the SW games in the pack play with Win7
Depends on the game. Games like The Force Unleashed will work perfect, while games like KOTOR should work or require a little bit of work to get it working.

Also couldn't say no to a $2.50 Bit.Trip beat.

My brethren gifted me BTB.

My favorite feature is the gamepad rumble support. The way it vibrates to the beat is really cool.

Moreover, the audio presentation is sublime.

=P Actually I've played the vast majority of the big name games out this console gen. I just REALLY like Bit.Trip. I start up Transition and those happy upbeat chiptunes lift my spirits pretty high. =)

Also keep in mind I didn't say it was my favorite, just one of them. (Meybe top 10 or so?) Very high on my list. =P Regardless though, I find it an excellent experience and once again totally worth the $2.50 pricetag for today. :D

Both KOTOR and Empire at War have been much cheaper... KOTOR has been $2.50 a few times and Empire at war has been $5. Was hoping for the $5 price on Empire at War since I missed it during the summer sale.

Same here. For $35 I would pick up the complete pack. Or at least I expected bigger discounts or some discounts period on the older titles.

For what it's worth, I thought Bit Trip Beat was little more than a boring Flash game. The patterns get off the wall but it's still just not that interesting as anything more than a minigame.

+1 Not for someone with a huge backlog, it's more of a game to kill some time.

I really just want the jedi knight pack part of the star wars bundle to go on sale. I have hard copies of most of the other games, including Dark Forces II and Jedi Academy, but if all 5 were less than $10 I'd get it instantly.

The Bit.Trip games aren't something you want to play for more than a half hour at once. They get stupid hard. Haven't even beaten the second level of Beat. Probably never will.

Would have gotten Republic Commando for $2.50. I remember liking it a lot when I played it back in 2005, but I don't know if the game has held up.
After looking up some gameplay videos of Commando, I decided not to bite. Looks like it hasn't aged really well.
It is well worth it. Trust me.
It is well worth it. Trust me.
That the same thing the stranger down the street says about his van full of candy too...

I think the worst part of aged games (this really only applies to the PC) are the controls. Some games can be ok besides some disgusting controls. How would you say the controls for them compare to newer games?
After looking up some gameplay videos of Commando, I decided not to bite. Looks like it hasn't aged really well.
Mention of Republic Commando still generates excitement in gamers to this day. I played a couple years ago to see what the fuss was about and it's WELL worth $5.

Interested in Republic Commando and almost bought it last time it was $5. I didn't get it then because many people were having issues getting it to run in widescreen and also that whole bump mapping issue. Basically there is no way of enabling bump mapping on modern hardware as they used some weird tricks to graft it on the engine. Shame, because it seems all the models are quite flat without it.

With these issues I would prefer it for something less than $5.
Heads up, for whatever reason, Portal is free again on Steam.
This explains the Portal 1 promotion:
www.learnwithportals.com

It's about using Portal 1 as an educational tool. The full game (Portal 1, not "first slice") is free until the 20th.

And by "free" I don't mean "you can play it for free until the 20th", I mean that if you claim it before the 20th, it will be in your library forever, free.

King Arthur games and dlc are the Paradox big deal of today. They're kind of a mix of total war and rpg games. I had fun with it, and it looks like they also released a stand alone expansion today for the game.
Darksiders is also $5 today.
Recently, I picked up a Darksiders Steam key from the THQ store for the same price as today's Daily Deal.

I'm really enjoying it and it's definitely worth the $5 if you yearn for an M-rated Zelda.
Is it wrong that I want to trade in my PS3 copy of Darksiders to gamestop for a Steam copy?
The graphics don't differ, as far as I can tell, and I just ended up playing it with a PS3 controller, so yes, I think it's wrong.

Unless you're saving money, of course.

Good game so far though, I'm only 2 hours in but it's pretty entertaining. The story could use some more oomph though, nothing too memorable.
Is it wrong that I want to trade in my PS3 copy of Darksiders to gamestop for a Steam copy?
Nope, not at all. I just bought a steam copy minutes ago although I have my PS3 copy sitting in the other room. This game is worth buying twice. Think I'll give my PS3 copy to my buddy who hasn't played it yet.

i think i'm interested in darksiders (loved the god of war games, remember liking ocarina of time back in the day) but probably won't be able to get to it anytime soon. what would you guys recommend? considering the price is it a must-drop-everything-and-play-right-now type thing, or do you think it'll get lower in near-to-mid future, and thus, there's no hurry?

I would be making $2 on Daksiders alone if I traded in my PS3 version of the game. I plan on trading it in for the new Kirby game anyway and it would get me on a trade x in deal.

It's a good game and $5 is the cheapest I seen for it. I wouldn't say it's a drop everything and play it type of game but it's a good game and I don't think it will go any lower than $5 anytime soon.

Pretty much going to second Fragalot on this one. It's by no means a must-play of this gen, but it's a pretty great title. (While the beginning felt a bit slow, it definitely got better and better towards the end) Considering that it probably won't go much lower (if at all lower) than $5, you might as well buy it now if you have any interest in playing it in the forseeable future. ;)

Not at all, I bought it back during the Summer sale (I think) and I still need to sell my ps3 copy I got from bbv for 7.50 :)

Sorry if this has been answered. How can you tell the difference between dlc that will work on a game originally purchased through steam and ones that will work with a retail copy? I wanted COD rezurrection dlc but have a retail disc. Is there another method to get the dlc if not through steam?

Generally speaking, you need the Steam version to use Steam DLC, it will state that on the store page iirc. As for your situation, COD BOPS is a Steamworks game so you have the Steam version of the game (anyone who buys it has to use Steam) so you can get the DLC on Steam, or anywhere else for that matter cause the DLC requires Steam as well.

COD: Black Ops is a Steamworks game so it requires Steam to run, there are no non-Steam versions for PC.
