Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Opposing Force CD-keys cannot be registered through Steam. Opposing Force was included in a retail Half-Life package. The Half-Life CD-key included in the package will unlock all of the games in that package, including Opposing Force.
Note: Only the retail games listed above can be registered through Steam. No other retail games can be registered and downloaded using Steam.
Nice way of saying you got this game through "alternate" means. COD: Black Ops is a Steamworks game so it requires Steam to run, there are no non-Steam versions for PC.
Accuse much?
Are the King Arthur games any good? Thinking of getting the collection for $7.49...
If you liked the total war type games with a bit more RPG flair to it, it's a good buy. Basically you go into battle with an army, and you level it up through battle. Through the story you get to choose objectives missions that effect the story.

Overall it's a good buy for $7.50 and it's pretty fun but it's a deep strategy game.

What do you mean by alternate means? I have a retail version of Borderlands but can't use Borderlands DLC from steam so I just wanted to clarify how to tell when you need the steam base copy for steam dlc. Gearbox sells the DLC from their website but the prices are hardly discounted. I wasn't sure if this was the same.

And yes I did buy COD if that's what you're implying. I just wasn't sure if you needed the digital copy.
The graphics don't differ, as far as I can tell, and I just ended up playing it with a PS3 controller, so yes, I think it's wrong.

Unless you're saving money, of course.

Good game so far though, I'm only 2 hours in but it's pretty entertaining. The story could use some more oomph though, nothing too memorable.
"The graphics" is a pretty broad term.

Does the PS3 version of Darksiders do higher than 1920x1080? Higher than 60fps (probably can't even pass 30)? How's the tearing? Anti-aliasing? 3D support, if that's your thing? Will it play on future Playstations long after the PS3 breaks or is sold?

There's lots of room for the PC version of a game to look way better, even if it's the same assets across the board.

Btw, you can play PC games with a 360 controller or a PS3 controller, whatever your preference.

Lol I have Borderlands retail as well, and had to buy the retail versions of the DLC (Box version of Moxxi and Ned, Gearbox's version of Claptrap and Knoxx). The reason why it's incompatible with the Steam version of Borderlands DLC is because Borderlands isn't a Steamworks game.

Black Ops is a Steamworks game, so it registers on and requires Steam. Borderlands isn't a Steamworks game, and therefore doesn't register on Steam, meaning that it is an entirely different version. If you have a non-Steamworks game and didn't buy the game from Steam, then you will need to get the game's DLC in the same format that you got the game itself (i.e. Retail game -> Retail DLC, D2D Game (non-Steamworks) -> D2D DLC). Do you understand it now?

So to answer your question, if you get the game from Steam, or the game is a Steamworks game (registers on and requires Steam), then you HAVE to get the Steam version of the DLC (if the game is a Steamworks game, you can get the DLC from another site and register the key on Steam). Otherwise, the Steam version of the game's DLC is not compatible with your version of the game.

(actually, if it's a Steamworks game (Steam only), you can pick up the DLC from anywhere and it gives you a Steam key. For example, you can buy Dawn of War II: Retribution DLC from Impulse and it gives you a key for your Steam account)

Sorry for the confusion, that's what I meant. I meant that you have to have Steam's version of the DLC, which you can get from another site if the game is a Steamworks game.

As another poster pointed out, Portal is free until Sept. 20th

I've never done the Steam thing or played Portal so this is a good jumping on point for me.

Yeah a perfect place. Also be sure to grab Team Fortress 2 because it's free and a ton of fun.

I originally started on Steam because of Portal being free a few years ago, and now I'm one of the "100+ Steam games" guys... Enjoy it and welcome to Steam!

+1 on Portal being my gateway drug.

Got it! It was damn confusing to me for awhile. Just to clarify, I'm looking at my retail box copy of Dead Island and it says steamworks on the back. I can buy any DLC in the future from steam directly. Also if another site like impulse or D2D offers same DLC, I can buy them because they'll give me a steam key.

Exactly, Steamworks means it's compatible with Steam DLC for the game, regardless of where you bought it.

Welcome to the wonderful world of collecting games.

Portal was also my gateway to Steam. I probably would never have gotten into it otherwise, perhaps even feeling opposed to it as a platform by the time Civ V rolled around, owing primarily to my desire to have something physical when I make a game purchase. I've really come to like the service, however, and I now have... looks like 139 items in my library. Wow.

Actually I had two gateways. The first was back in 2005 when I bought Half Life 2. I used the service but it never had any impact until 2008 when I bought the Orange Box. Now come 2011 I own 154 games currently according to my profile.

Anyway bought Darksiders because I can get extra cash trading it into gamestop for Kirby for the DS.

I was originally opposed to Steam and first got it quite by accident in May when I bought Magicka on sale and didn't read the fine print.

I didn't pay it much mind until late June when I got Fallout: New Vegas on sale and again, didn't read the fine print about it requiring Steam.

Then the Summer Sale happened...

Let's just say that 3 1/2 months and 329 games later I am not so opposed anymore. ;)

LMAO Welcome to da clizzub.

Mount and Blade is the Paradox deal of the day. Is there going to be a Paradox deal tomorrow, or is today the last of it? I want to know so I can get Magicka complete.

Mirrors Edge is the Daily Deal which I am gonna buy. $5 for Mirrors Edge.

$7.50 is a great price for Mount & Blade: Warband, the best M&B game. The original is good but no multiplayer, the most recent has guns but is less compelling, and Warband is just brilliant brilliant brilliant.

It says now through Sunday, so there will be a deal on Sunday that will expire on Monday at 10am I'm guessing, Pacific time of course.

I would definitely recommend Mirror's Edge I had a lot of fun playing through it. It's pretty short maybe 8-10 hours but the gameplay is great and there are speed runs for each level to beat your top score on a level. I used a controller which made things much easier for me. Overall great fun and worth the $5.

I used a RecycleBank gift card to get Mirror's Edge from the EA Store for free a while ago. It's really good, but you'll want to use a controller. Keyboard controls don't do the fluid gameplay any justice.

Mount and Blade Warband is a decent fun dumb swordfighting medieval big army fight game with utterly trash... well, pretty much everything but the combat is utter trash. Worth $5-ish and not a lot more, but it is one of those long-paced games so you can drop a lot of hours into it if that's your thing.

Everyone should have Mirror's Edge by now. I can't help to think how much MORE money EA would have made had they used Steamworks to handle the ME DLC.

Yeah, Origin will lead to much less sales for them, but that's just their loss. Stupid business decision from a company with HUGE potential.

Any Fallout 3 tips? Iv tried playing the game once or twice because its so well loved and each time I find myself frustrated. Open world RPGs just tend to frustrate me badly. First they let you wander anywhere yet 70% of the areas you wander in to your not meant to and you get killed as a result. Second because there is so much useless shit to pick up yet I feel like I need to pick it up because it may be useful at some point. In most games if they let you pick up a spoon or a can of some crappy food it means someone at some point will want it and give you a reward. In western RPGs you can pick up millions of useless items....yet the few you leave behind someone is guaranteed to need at some point.

I may just be built to not like these types of games....but I really want to try giving Fallout 3 one last fair shot.

Same thing with me. I remember being very upset that hl2 required steam! However back then steam was pretty bad. I bought orange box for ten bucks and never looked back. Currently, I nearly have hit the 300 game mark lol.

1) Fallout 3 has level scaling, so you can pretty much go anywhere and do alright, though some side quests may challenge you unless you have certain skills. Still, exploring gets you to find new fast travel locations, which are sorely needed when you all of a sudden get a quest that tells you to go to the middle of no where.

2)Get a safehouse (Either through mods, or find a house with a fast travel location, clear out any baddies, and claim it as your own) and start unloading crap you pick up. Car batteries, scrap metal, medical braces, these things have uses, but not until you've leveled repair to a high enough level.

Just a few tips:

1) Diversify your favorite guns. Don't be sharing the same ammo pool, pick one favorite gun that uses 9mm, one that uses .45, one that uses .357 etc.
2) Don't rush through the main campaign. It's not bad, but it's in the lower 40% of FO3 quests, in my opinion. If you like corridor shooters, check out Zeta. If you like sneakier shooters, check out Operation Anchorage (Raise your sneaaaak!) If you like straight up crazy quests, check out Point Lookout. The Pitt is also good, but I can't easily categorize it.
3) If you don't like your guns, look up unique ones and hunt them down.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.
Same thing with me. I remember being very upset that hl2 required steam! However back then steam was pretty bad. I bought orange box for ten bucks and never looked back. Currently, I nearly have hit the 300 game mark lol.
When I first got HL2 in 2005 I was like what is the point of Steam. When I got the Orange Box I realized that oh these auto updates are nice. Then when I started buying stuff off Steam through the store it became ok yeah this is deadly. It takes me like 4 clicks to buy a game now .

Most of the junk in FO3 really is junk. Don't worry about nabbing anything whose weight-to-value ratio is annoying. About the only things you MIGHT want are pre-war books which you can turn in to a specific person for cash. You will get blueprints later but even then for just a few specific piece of junk. Don't worry about it. Do grab drugs, stimpaks, and ammo though. They're weightless, even rockets.

In FO3, you absolutely can explore just about wherever you want without serious issues. You may want to level up a bit dicking around Megaton and making sure you have a decent gun but with the 9mm pistol and baseball bat you start with you can just about make a name for yourself anywhere.

Take Moira's Wasteland Survival Guide quest and let it give you some direction in your wasteland exploration.

See last time I tried FO I recall enjoying most of the vault but then right after getting out of the vault some giant robot thing attacked and killed me in all of like 2 seconds. I recall thinking "Christ see this is why I hate WRPGs, the second exploration opened up some powerhouse thing kills me".

Same thing happened to me. I leave and I died a couple of times. It's frustrating and a bit overwhelming. I recommend saving often and avoiding fighting until you have a few weapons then try to isolate your targets and use VATS.

Also, try to work your way to the town that's near the vault.

It's hard at first but you would be missing out on a great game to quit too early.

Wait.. are we still talking about FO3 here? The only robot I remember after getting out of the Vault was that propaganda flying robot thingy.. and that thing only attacks you if you provoke it (ie: shoot/bashed it). Then again, I headed right towards Megaton once I exited the Vault. There was also that sheriff robot greeting you, too. But he also doesn't attack unless provoked..

And as for today's Paradox deals: if you must get one of the M&B game, get "Warband." It's an upgraded version of the original M&B, so there's no reason at all to even buy the original M&B. Plus, the modding community for "Warband" is a lot more active, even when compared to "With Fire and Sword" (WF&S) since, as far as I know, the modding module (needed by modders to create the mods) haven't been released yet.

Here's a handy link for those who are interested in the mods for Warband: list of mods (they're listed in forums format)

Two mods I personally recommend (for Warband):
Floris Mod Pack (mod info, mod's subforum): a lot of handy and awesome mods packed into one neat package. The mod is more of an add-on to the "vanilla" experience (even comes with graphical and sound upgrades!). It includes a handful of features that will make you think "why wasn't this implemented in the vanilla version?" It comes in two flavors: Basic (keeps the changes to the essentials) and Expanded.

Prophesy of Pendor (mod info, mod's subforum): a total conversion mod. The authors have put a lot of time and effort into this. It has its own world and even its own story! Worth a look if you've completed Warband and you're seeking for more.

A word of warning, however: some mods are larger than the game itself. So don't expect it to be a quick download. And those who are not tech-savvy may be overwhelmed. But don't give up! Once you get it all working, it's definitely worth the effort. :D

Thanks, will look into it when I finish the game. :)

I just noticed that Majesty Gold Edition was only $2.50. Anyone pick this up and can recommend it? Seems like a cool mix between a sim and strategy game...and for $2.50....
Yeah a perfect place. Also be sure to grab Team Fortress 2 because it's free and a ton of fun.
Thanks for the info.

Is that even possible? :D

Kidding aside, these are great I love Warband and just started a part where I joined up with a faction to attack a castle. We went running alongside of the walls and were getting arrows shot at us and barely made it to the castle wall before retreating. Awesome sight to see arrows stuck in your shield like Braveheart movie.

BTW how does the siege of a castle work? Do I wait for the tower like in the practice module or what happens?

Same here I started with HL2 and was very indifferent about Steam at the time. After I finished HL2 back in 2005 I had steam uninstalled for years but then one day I got an e-mail saying that my password and contact information has been changed. I had to contact steam about what happened and just by luck when I got my account back was the same time that steam had its first holiday sale. So if my account never got hacked I might have never took the time to install steam again.

Eh, Mirror's Edge is visually stunning and a great concept design-wise but is fairly short (although most people accept six to eight hour games these days). I liken it to Portal, not in terms of mechanics, but that, again, neat concept that could have been built on and is carried by a lot of... word of mouth (I'll stop short at saying hype).

Warband is also a good game. To call it 'trash' is absurd. One might not care for the genre but objectively it isn't a bad game. It's low budget and would probably be more palatable to people if the list price were $20 but just because it doesn't have state-of-the-art graphics and voice acting doesn't ruin the game play experience. Obviously if you aren't a fan of medieval strategic nation building with first person battle mechanics thrown in then you won't like it. $7.50 is the lowest I've seen on Steam for a year and a half.

Majesty Gold is pretty good, too. I got the Paradox Fantasy pack during the Summer Sale and put about fifteen or so hours into it. Overall I preferred Majesty 2 (although it has some balance/design issues) as it is more of an RTS and you can get your units to respond better to attack/defend flags. Majesty Gold is almost a pure simulator. You build your city and the heroes pretty much just do everything by themselves. About 75% or so of the missions in the base game are so easy that you could just pump out heroes and go AFK for thirty minutes, come back and find out you've won. The other 25% are brutally hard... especially given the relative lack of control of the heroes.
1) Fallout 3 has level scaling
So it's different from Fallout: New Vegas? One of the things I really hate about Oblivion is the level scalling...I don't want everyone else going up in level with me, and sometimes even making things harder.

If New Vegas does that, I'm not noticing it, it's subtle if it's happening at all. Like I can just annihilate some weaker enemies, which is fun, and conversly there's some areas I just can't really deal with yet...which I also like. To me it's lame if it doesn't even matter, that you can just go anywhere. Then it makes leveling up seem pointless.

Well...really I like everything about New Vegas much more than Oblivion. The gameplay system and combat, the weapons, the leveling system, the setting, the story...

We'll have to agree to disagree. I DO like medieval strategic nation building and that's a BIG reason why M&B is trash. It's utterly lousy at the whole strategic half of the board. Lord AI, economics, strategic choices, these are all pathetic compared to any real war game, and the questing/RPG aspects are pretty dull compared to any thing else that it tries to emulate (It's not really an open-world RPG, it's more Sid Meier's Pirates only as a medieval war man than anything else.).

Like I said, the combat itself is good fun. It's like it is a good game with lots of potential glued to a really utterly lousy overlay. It's so utterly dull that even the huge pile of mods atop it can scarcely cement over the flaws, at best making it just busywork to string together your next big army fight.

No, and thank goodness. FO3 and FNV both have small amounts of scaling but it isn't as atrocious as Oblivion. They are very similar in feel. The biggest difference between the two is the damage model and the willingness to really make asshole monsters. FNV's cazadors are much bigger dicks than just about anything you'll find in FO3 and pretty much force you to stick to the roads in the early game.

In fact, it's kinda silly what a joke pretty much every human enemy is in FNV compared to cazadors.
