Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I disagree with the people saying Portal 2's worth 15$. I paid 15$ for my Steam copy a couple months ago by purchasing someone's PS3 code and it was a very meh ride. A couple decent puzzles, an okay storyline, and a couple new features, but the campaign got boring pretty fast to me and I was only playing for the cut-scenes after a few hours. I'd say unless you have no other games to play, wait till later.

You speak madness.
I bought Crysis and Warhead. I'm new to PC gaming, is there anything I need to know about SecuROM? I think these games have that kind of DRM.
Crysis has an install limit of five times. Securom can be removed from Warhead but not from Crysis.

I was about to buy the Crysis bundle myself, until I found out it has securom.Oh well, saved me some money at least.
What is Securom?
Securom is a copy protection that has been put in a number of games in the past few years. It restricts the number of times the game can be installed onto a computer before it won't let you install it at all anymore.

Even though I feel Portal 2 is easily worth 14.99 if you're not in a huge hurry to play I would pass. Since it's a Valve game you can pretty much guarantee it will be cheaper during the next major sale.

Just to add: you can download program from Securom's site that will let you redeem one of your installation "credits" when you uninstall the game. Otherwise you'll end up getting locked out of a game you've paid for.
Just tried out the Ogres Must Die! demo, and I'm really looking forward to it hitting a sale.
I was disappointed that one doesn't have a preorder sale. It looks really fun and sort of unique as tower defense games go.
You speak madness.
Madness?! Blah blah blah Sparta! /obligatory 300 reference out of the way\ Portal 2 can take my chest kick and fall down the well. The only things I really like about Portal 2 are the level creator, cutscenes/dialogue, and co-op levels. Everything else is white noise as far as I'm concerned. In fact, I'd probably have enjoyed Portal 2 more if I had just watched someone play the game lol.
*has always thought Portal was overrated so imagines he will think Portal 2 is good but hugely overrated*
I have to agree with you- Portal 1 is a pretty fun game, but I'd say it's worth maybe 3-4$ to me. I played through it once, never touched it again and it lasted me about 3-4 hours, so I think a dollar an hour is pretty fair considering Steam's crazy sale prices. Don't get me wrong: Portal's an extremely well-designed game if you are speaking about it's technology, level design and whatnot. It just needs something extra to push it over the edge of good to great. I don't quite know what that is yet, but I'm going to keep pondering this.

I just want to point out the demo for Space Pirates and Zombies (SPAZ) on Steam. Pretty neat game and definitely worth checking out the demo if you're into old school space games. I've spoken with one of the devs on the Steam forums and they're really cool folks in addition to having made a great game. :)

I've been doing some reading and it sounds like Crysis on Steam has a form of Securom that doesn't limit installations but just verifies the game when you start it or something like that. But then WarHead does limit the number of installs. I was also reading some stuff about Securom damaging your computer or your DVD drives, I don't know about that. I installed Crysis and started it up normally, never saw any indication that it had installed securom or activated it or anything.
I like how they put the vastly superior version of Crysis on sale the same day that a new cheap version of it is released.
Yeah, pretty funny. :D And, of course, the PC version has quite a few wonderful mods to add to its superiority.

I noticed a SecuROM folder in Windows, I looked in there and it turns out GTA4 which I installed a long time ago from Steam had some files in there. There were no Crysis files in there, it looks to me like Crysis didn't have SecuROM.
I like how they put Crysis on sale the same day that a vastly superior version of it is released.
Say what now? I remember hearing a gimped multiplayerless version was coming out, but nothing about some kind of "superior version"...

I would suggest trying some of the mods for Portal. I loved Portal and thought that there are few games out there that have such a solid three hours. That said, I understand the criticisms. It basically introduces a mechanic and trains the player for the last level which is only a few puzzles long. As the puzzles arent really challenging, the game can feel a bit shallow. I think some of the mods do a great job of fleshing out the game that Portal could have been. They will also do a good job of filling the time until Portal 2 drops below $10.
It looks really fun and sort of unique as tower defense games go.
It's a tower defense game? I'm not a big fan of those types of games, but I will give the demo a shoot before I give up on it.

It's built on Crysis 2's engine, and (at least from what I've read) has changed the suit powers to work like they do in Crysis 2. Aside from PC elitists, and people that just LOVE Crysis ONE multiplayer, that seems like a vastly superior version.

Ok my copy of RAGE came in today and holy shit 3 retail DvD's. I have never bought a retail PC game that was 3 DvD's for a non expansion game. Installing now and will give impressions later :D.

Now to see what the daily deal is today. Hopefully it's something I don't want because I got four new games today so far, lol. Damn you sales and friends recommending games for me to buy
If you are wanting gamepad support with Arcadia you will be disappointed- it doesn't work.
Thanks. The price is definitely right but I think I will pass on this one!
Am I the only one that doesn't care about Frozen Synapse and SpaceChem? I sure feel like I am.
Probably.

Well I only got to try RAGE for 10 minutes but wow that game looks fucking horrible. It has texture problems up the wazoo. Also shooting feels like an iD game. The problem with that is this is 2011, I expect to headshot someone from 2 feet away with a pistol and kill them... Hopefully this game gets better gameplay wise, otherwise I will be disappointed.
Am I the only one that doesn't care about Frozen Synapse and SpaceChem? I sure feel like I am.
I've been super excited for SpaceChem for quite some time, but the price never seemed right. In fact, I was so excited for SpaceChem that I used summer sale tickets to unlock the DLC when I didn't have the game.

So happy they added SpaceChem to the humble bundle! Been wanting that game after playing the demo when it was on sale, but I wanted to wait for it to get cheaper.

I'll probably have to increase my donation after this addition.

Reinstall Video Drivers to this if you have ATI:

http://support.amd.com/us/kbarticles/Page/GPU121AMDCatRagePerfDriver.aspx

Solves the texture popping, but many textures still look like shit for a 20GB+ game. Also there were still some very bad VSync issues that I noticed. I have a 6870 card.

What platform? I think PC > PS3 > 360, though even the 360 version's supposed to look amazing.

Did you install it? It's got like a 22GB install on the Xbox, and it probably needs that to run right.

I haven't played it yet, but I'm not really sure what you mean about the gameplay...I thought ID games always had tight controls.

In its current state, 360 & PS3 > PC. id really dropped the ball on this one, the PC version is largely busted.

Hey guys, How is SpaceChem? I already have literally every other game in the HBundle (except Trauma, that looks boring as shit) and I was wondering if that game was worth my donation. It looks very... not gamey. Is there a demo out for mac? If not, can anybody recommend a good Let's Play on youtube or something like that that showcases the game well?

Thanks.

Your just not excited because it doesnt feature baby pandas riding oversized hamsters or some other cute cartoony feature ;)

*note to self, design a game with pandas riding oversized hamsters in to battle*

Edit - And no, neither of them really interest me so your not alone.

YouTube should actually be chock full of videos, since SpaceChem let's you post directly from within the game. I would caution you against watching too many, since it's still a puzzle game and you wouldn't want to ruin it for yourself.

That being said, while this game can be very difficult, there is also a "Sync" mechanic that makes programming reactions much easier. Of course, this adds to your counts so if you're more concerned with keeping your stats low (like chasing high scores) then you're likely going to try to come up with more elegant solutions that are naturally timed. It's kind of hard to describe if you haven't already tried it, but I strongly recommend it.

The controls feel pretty good to me, which are fine. Everything else is pretty much all screwed up like Hydro said. If you're on an ATI card and don't have the driver I linked above (Which came out last night and updated today for HD 4XXX cards), you were either crashing going into the game or the game was incredibly unplayable (such as second long freezes every other second or severe artifacting). There were a few rare people that could get in and didn't have bad frame rate, however the texture loading was one of the most atrocious things you'd ever seen. You'd look a little left and the textures that just appeared would load about 1.5 or 2 seconds later. Then you moved back to the right and the same exact thing even though you were just looking at it.

After that new driver I was able to play, but now I have the worst screen tearing I have ever seen. It is on my screen anytime any motion occurs what so ever and is always in the middle section of my screen and takes up about a height of 100 to 200 pixels horizontally on a 1920x1080 resolution. If I force VSync, I can get in the game and it looks great.... until I try to load any other area, which it then promptly freezes on me.

Not everybody has the same exact issue and nVidia cards from what I've heard handle it better, but my god. It's a terrible console port and has zero video customization options and is broken on a good portion of people. Especially those with ATI cards.
Am I the only one that doesn't care about Frozen Synapse and SpaceChem? I sure feel like I am.
They don't particularly interest me, either. They're great games for their genres but I'm just not a fan.

Good god, between Rage and Dead Island developers sure are making a strong case for not preordering games because you might just end up with a broken piece of shit game and no way to get your money back.
Good god, between Rage and Dead Island developers sure are making a strong case for not preordering games because you might just end up with a broken piece of shit game and no way to get your money back.
Yeah, I even had similar thoughts about Deus Ex, I could have had it for $34 at release but it seemed to have some bugs to be ironed out. So I thought I would wait for them to patch it and drop the price so I would end up with a better and cheaper game. Same with Dead Island. Though I just about never buy games at release.

Just want to throw my 2 cents on Rage. I just built a gaming pc with a NVidia GF GTX 590 and was also having the issues with texture problems everyone else is until I downloaded the beta driver for Battlefield 3 from the NVidia site. Since then the game has been running much smoother and I haven't had any freeze ups. As for the game I'm liking it. I've always been an Id fanboy but so far I've been having a blast with it.

THIS IS BECAUSE YOU HAVE CRAPPY TASTE.

Both games are very precisely aimed. I can understand not liking them both, but they are still pretty solid. SpaceChem is definitely an engineer's puzzler.
