Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Since the DLC's are just activation keys for GFWL, I think it would be possible for someone to buy it for someone else then send the keys. However, that person would also have to own Fable III, and they wouldn't be able to buy it for themselves afterward (as steam will only let you buy the dlc once and thus only get one code). The only people who would be able to help out the GFWL shoppers would be steam users who just want the base game, and i bet that's probably not the largest group.
Unless one purchases the DLC as a gift and then redeems it oneself. Since it sounds like the DLC key is activated thru GFWL and not Steam, they wouldn't know and one could buy it multiple times thusly. This is not taking into consideration any TOS violations.

(( EDIT: Oh well fine, remove all my line breaks, CAG. Enjoy your wall of text then.)) Securom. GFWL. Steam. I don't know whether to feel sad or insulted. Having played Fable 3 on consoles, it's a game where you get out what you put in. It doesn't bring a lot of quality to the table, probably less than Fable 2 but even that's... debatable. But the writing and dialogue are cute and some of the quests are cute and the casual acts of cruelty you can engage in are cute. Don't know what they were thinking adding a harder difficulty to the PC version. They didn't make Devil May Cry. There's not the depth there needed for a proper combat system, especially with the one-button per combat tool fetish and the huge enemy HP bar fetish. The DLC? I only played Traitor's Keep but it was actually really good. The villains were pretty cool, especially the last boss. Fable is right up there with Koei Warriors games in the "Dumb Crap I Keep Buying and Playing To My Shame" category. I can't put an accurate price on it though, as, by the time Fable 4 comes out, they'll probably throw some more Stephen Fry on the mic and a few British heroic and villainous caricatures on the screen and I'll dive right in again. It's a hard game for me to give a straight answer to whether I like or hate it. The angry words come easier now after the fact but I never once thought of putting it down once I had it. I say if you think you'll like it and can deal with securom and GFWL just go for it. Don't think too hard about it because you won't find an answer.
Daily Deal, Universal Sandbox for $5 . Kinda tempted by this one, any thoughts?
Yes, if you're fascinated by astronomy and want to fool around with tweaking the universe to your heart's content then you may be interested.

Otherwise, I suggest staying away.

I love that kind of stuff and still only managed to find enough to hold my interest for maybe an hour.

Not really a "game", interesting to pop open for 10-15 minutes for what-if scenarios or if you're generally interested in the subject. I'd probably pass.

Also, the complete lack of music is oddly distrubing. Yea, it's space, but I was hoping for some cool Cosmos-esque soundtrack.

Wow. I checked the deal before checking here, and was like "I will buy this game". After reading these two posters' comments, I've decided to hold off. 'preciate it, you two.

The Daily Deals have been weaning me off impulse purchases. Wonder what the psychology is behind that.

My friend bought this during the Summer Sale and he thought the same as you guys. Its interesting for about an hour or two, but that's about it. Pass from me as well.

Still going back and forth about Fable III. The fact that I'll have to skip the second game in the series and the reviews I've read/watched on Fable III makes me want to skip this game. But at the same time, I loved Fable...

Because they're daily deals. The deals come every day, so when you see a game that's 75% off as a daily deal, it isn't really a surprise. When you see a game 75% off as a weekend deal, you're much more excited, or at least that's the case for me lol...

As has been said already, Universe Sandbox was $5 during the Summer sale. I was kinda interested in it at the time and I asked for advice on it. I can't remember who the poster was, but he descried it much like people have described it here, as an astrophysics simulator. But he added something else. He compared it to Google Earth. With Google Earth, you don't use it for hours on end, but it's kinda fun to play around with it for a few minutes every once in a while.

That sold me on it. But not for $5. I'll wait until it hits $2.50 or less.

Does Universe Sandbox have any true astrophysics complexity, or is it just moving space-y things around? It there's actual educational value, with real astronomy and physics, I'm much more interested than if it just looks cool.

From the product description:
 • Interactive, real-time, n-body gravity simulator
 • Change any property of any object at any time
 • Real physics, real data, real units, real science

So... yes?
You know what CAG needs? Someone who has everything on Steam, so for each new deal they can come on here and give an opinion.
Working on it.

Space Siege is very sub-par, short and doesn't offer much for the Siege series of the isometric top-down genre. It's like they took Dungeon Siege, took out all of the decent customization and length and set it in space. It's extremely linear with no real side areas at all and the difficulty is pretty simple. I remember when it released that it didn't run well on computers with recommended settings. It relies on some earlier physics technology that caused issues. With newer computers I wouldn't think this has an issue though.

If you're dying for a Dungeon Siege type of game but don't care about the lackluster customization and only care about co-op with buddies, it's half decent. However beyond that, it's better to save your money in my opinion. It's one of those games you'll play through once and never touch again.
You know what CAG needs? Someone who has everything on Steam, so for each new deal they can come on here and give an opinion.
They'd have to have played the game too. My 'All Games' says I have just shy of 400 games, but that includes DLC and junk too. Played a good deal of what I have on the PC or some other platform, but there's a fair amount I haven't got to. Some I may not even get to as it was apart of a multi-game pack and have no interest in it.

In on Space Siege. Despite the lackluster reviews, it's Gas Powered Games and their Dungeon Siege titles have personally consumed a ton of hours.

Out of respect, I can part with $3.75. If it's a suck-fest, so be it.

I have roughly 700 of the 2000 games and DLC available; yet absolutely no time to play anything. I can only roughly predict the value of games and the likelihood that they go on sale (again).

As you are the closest person to a complete Steam collection, I vote for you to be the one to buy everything else and report back to us ;)
I was one of the few people that really enjoyed Fable 3.
Same.
Though, I didn't think it was great.
Wasn't enough interesting side quests to suit me.
I also thought the section of being the King could've been longer.

Your wish is granted.

Unfortunately, it's me.

Your favorite game? Garbage.

So... I beat Crysis and started on Warhead.

Crysis was glitchy and a framerate rollercoaster. Did anyone else notice that the first half of the game was harder than the second half? Warhead seems much more stable and balanced. Anyways, just a few observations. Well worth the 10 bucks I paid for both.

Usually, that happens because the developers make the mistake of making the first level first and when The Crunch happens. I imagine Crytek suddenly blowing up one day, their head guy charging through a door, knocking over some guy with a stack of blank paper and sending them fluttering overhead in a dramatic way. "Omg, EA is telling us the new deadline for early alpha playable is in one month! WHERE DID THE TIME GO? Why did I listen to Greg Broussaard when he told me to take a couple years off and play WoW? People, stop worrying about if the levels are fun, if the story makes sense, if the aliens are worth killing, stop everything that gets in the way of having a level that actually completes and sends them on to the next level! Everything must go! Don't optimize the levels, don't worry if auto-saves work properly everywhere! Don't even worry if the game glitches and won't let you proceed! Just slap an ending in there and hold it together with prayer and some bubble gum!! Hardly anyone finishes games anymore anyway! They won't even notice if there's no ending because they'll be too busy joygasming over the low framerates our poorly optimized engine is providing them!"

I imagine Crysis 2 will provide a more uniform experience even if when the game first came out there was almost immediately a youtube of someone playing one of the last levels and just running through it without firing his weapon a single time...

I strongly disagree that this is the case with Crysis 1. As the game got to the later stages, you had all these new mechanics popping in. New weapons, enemies, way of moving around, vehicles, heavily scripted boss battles with new assets, etc., the kind of stuff you can't implement on a whim.

The problem was the latter half fundamentally changed the game from being an awesome open-ended shooter, to being a generic linear alien shooter. Stealth was thrown out the window because the aliens seem to see right through it, and there's no ability to sneak up and take them out one by one because they're flying far above you half the time. So you're forced to just pop armor and gun them to death.

Crysis 2 doesn't toss in or out new mechanics, which gives a much more stable and uniform experience. Unfortunately, the experience is somewhat bland compared to the first half of C1. Not bad, just not really varied or colorful. Plain old vanilla.

Still, I have a strange affinity for the games. Really, I have a love for any game that lets me jump 20+ feet tall or run 60+ MPH.

I finally beat King's Bounty: Armored Princess last night. It's taken me 3-4 weeks, on and off, and I had to restart a couple of times as I made bad choices and was basically screwed by the time I hit the fourth island (Rusty Anchor?).

I enjoyed it massively. I like the kinda games where you have to plan ahead, and make sure you don't waste any of your resources (gold/certain troops are often hard to come by).

Two warnings:
1) it's a timesink. I spent 90+ hours on it in total, and I've yet to start the campaigns that came with Crossworlds;
2) you might need to research some of the harder boss fights, one in particular gave me a lot of trouble before the internet saved me from hours more of frustration.

p.s. Thanks to whoever recommended it during the summer sale, I wouldn't have touched it without a CAG recommendation :)

THQ Week too!

Was thinking there should be a sale to coincide with the holiday, however obliquely.

Metro 2033 today, 75% off for $5.
Gonna give the Titan's Quest demo a quick whirl....
I'm not sure if the demo is based on TQ or if it also includes elements of the expansion, Immortal Throne. When a deal for Titan Quest Gold comes along make sure to buy that version (it's TQ and IT combined). IT adds a lot of new content, improves elements of the UI, and adds a new artifact/talisman system that greatly helps you improve your stats and abilities. This is one of the best hack-and-slash games I've ever played and I've played a lot of them.

Thanks for the info man. Download just finished so I'm gonna fire it up now. It looks like the Titan's Quest Gold Bundle is on sale for 33% as well for $13.33. Think that's a decent price? I've been in the mood for a good hack and slash.

Also, if I were to buy the bundle now, and Steam discounts it further throughout the week, do they credit your account or are you up a creek without a paddle?

So is this the week I finally bite on the Dawn of War RTS games? I generally love RTS games (preferably the Blizz RTS games over the C&C series) - and am a sucker for stories in games. How are the DoW games in comparison?

I'm going to hold off on the 33% as I imagine that we'll have either a dedicated DoW day, and if not, it will for the Christmas sale.

Any opinions on the THQ Hit Collection? I'm at work with a lot of sites (including Steam) blocked by a Websense filter, but from what I can tell, it's $50 this week and contains:

Company of Heroes
Company of Heroes Opposing Fronts
Darksiders
Homefront
Metro 2033
MX vs ATV Reflex
Red Faction Guerrilla
Red Faction Armageddon
Stalker
Saints Row 2
Titan Quest
Titan Quest Immortal Throne
Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2
Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 Chaos Rising
Warhammer 40k Dawn of War 2 Retribution

Of those, I only own Company Of Heroes. It sounds like when you buy the pack, any "extra" copies of games you already own disappear into the nether - you don't get an extra giftable key or anything. I know I want Titan Quest, Metro and Homefront, and the price per item is somwhere around 3 or 4 dollars per. Also, which Stalker game is it that is included?
Thanks for the info man. Download just finished so I'm gonna fire it up now. It looks like the Titan's Quest Gold Bundle is on sale for 33% as well for $13.33. Think that's a decent price? I've been in the mood for a good hack and slash.

Also, if I were to buy the bundle now, and Steam discounts it further throughout the week, do they credit your account or are you up a creek without a paddle?
Better bring your paddle, you won't be getting any money back. Always wait until the last day of the sale to buy non-dailys, you never know what comes up.

Wait till the end of the sale, but yeah Titan's Quest is a ton of fun. If you do get the game- you should look into the fanpatch and the Titan Quest defiler- two very useful tools to remove bugs and make then game more playable.

Hell of a deal imo. I own everything but 4 games on their and only 2 of them I want. If you want even half of them and the other half look decent too you there is no reason not to get it at that price really.

Taking a guess here...

Company of Heroes day
Red Faction day
Homefront day (plus all DLC)
Warhammer weekend

That about covers it, right?

I'd bite on a cheap Homefront (less than $5), Saint's Row 2 (less than $5), and maybe double-dip on SupCom Gold (less than $5). Otherwise, I've pretty well cherry-picked my way through THQ's catalog over various past sales.

(Insert "I wish you could gift extra copies" statement here)

Already have Darksiders, Metro 2033, Titan Quest Gold, DoW2 and DoW2:CR so I think the whole pack would be a waste.

I imagine DoW2: Retribution will be discounted more one day, and I'll pick that up.

I don't see Red Faction: Armageddon going low enough to justify a purchase, and that is really the only other game I want that badly.

Sweet collection of games here for $50 for those that don't have many, though.

Titan Quest is several years old, but still looks decent and is good fun. I fondly remember my mace + shield character sending enemies flying across the screen with a charge move and an auto-attack shieldbash move.

Absolutely love the DOW series. I beat Dawn of War II, but haven't finished the campaigns for Chaos Rising or Retribution. Multiplayer is a ton of fun too.

Thanks guys, I guess I'll wait till the end of the sale to see if a better deal comes up. Been really needing a good hack and slash style game. Hopefully the demo will hold me over till I pull the trigger on the full version :)

Haha, no credits. Timing is everything on Steam.

As for TQ: the TQ Gold bundle is always, and I mean always, under $10 at Amazon. As others have stated, Immortal Throne improves the original interface, most especially by adding a caravan that appears at the market in most cities you visit, acting as a free item bank for you. Install TQ, and Install Immortal Throne, then play from the beginning. You don't have to wait to finish the first to start the second; it's a GUI upgrade and an extra chapter, all in one.

It's also about 80 hours of gameplay to get through the whole thing. At $5, or $13, it's one of your better cost-per-hour games out there.

Also, the Fan Patch is a must if you are planning to complete the game. It fixes bugs that the designers didn't have time to patch out before the studio was dissolved. the Fan Patch is easy to apply, stable, and Steam-compatible.

Good luck with this great game.
