Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Anyone have PayDay the Heist? The game looked cool when they were promoting it but I have yet to year anything concrete about it.
I bought it on release, its a fun game. The quality of the game is gonna be dependent on the players though, a whole lot of team work is needed. The levels them selves are cool, and the leveling system is unique.
Hoping the Witcher 2 discount gets increased later today...please?
Amazon has it for 16, 60% off. No way Steam will match/beat that.

Probably in for Limbo, definitely in for PayDay, maybe in for HAWX (How's the PC port?)

That's a whole Tom Clancy sale going on. HAWX1 is worth the $2.50 if you like Ace Combat (Skip HAWX2 though.) Conviction AND the DLC are both great, and Chaos Theory is still one of the best games ever created. Easily.

FEAR3 is pretty nice, but $20 is a bit much now. A couple weeks back I'd have said $20 is fine but it should be a bit lower now. $25 for ALL FEAR is sweet though.

I still say K&L1&2 are a bit better, but not a lot, than the hype they got.

Limbo isn't worth picking up off the street but people seem to disagree with that. I call those sorts losers but YMMV.

I didn't enjoy Limbo either, but was told the main point of the game was the symbolism of the story.

Got Limbo and Witcher Enhanced Edition

I know Limbo is a love it or hate it type of game so for $2.50 what the hell. Witcher was a no brainier at $2.50.

Ugh, what a fucking terrible daily discount on Witcher 2. If I'm reading this correctly, according to a Steam price tracker, it went from 33% off normally to... 40% off for the daily.

That's worse than a Capcom daily right there. Hooray, an extra $3 off.

EDIT: Thanks for wiping my cart again Steam. I really appreciate your active discouragement to buy anything.
I didn't enjoy Limbo either, but was told the main point of the game was the symbolism of the story.
No, Limbo was about atmosphere. And even then the atmosphere wasn't fleshed out. There wasn't even a scrap, a HINT of a story... or anything to be symbolized there. You could have better luck hunting for symbolism in an episode of Gilligan's Island.

Mmmmm, civilization dlc...

Now I have all of it. Well, everything that's not a map pack. I do not understand map packs.

Given Limbo is black and white, I'd expect a minimalist noire type game. Guess some people don't appreciate that. If it's anything like PB Winterbottom (but with gore), then I'll be satisfied.

Same here with wiping of the cart... Use the internet browser then open all the item you want in new tabs... add them then purchase right away.

I bought Limbo and Payday the first day, so I got burned... I'm sure a few other games I bought will burn me also. Now I know to wait 'til the final day of the sale. :0)
$25 for ALL FEAR is sweet though.

I did not notice that... crap. Why did you have to say that? I already bought 3 games today and I was hoping that would be it!

Looks like I am the new owner of Witcher 1, RB6 Vegas 2, SC Chaos Theory, PayDay (part of a 4pack of course) and now the entire FEAR collection. Oh Steam...

if today is the last day for new deals, then witcher 1 and cthulhu saves the world / breath of death double pack are it for me this sale. I was really hoping for a daily on magic 2012

I do enjoy your comments but sometimes I think you are a little harsh on indie games, however I have come to expect it from you . Limbo is definitely worth 2.50. The basic story, in case you missed it, you are looking for your sister who is trapped in "Limbo". I'll be getting it.

I think I'll finally pick up Chaos Theory based on yours and others praise for it.

I called Limbo being 75% off on day one. ;)

You will learn, young one.
Unless you're on your deathbed, and your last wish is to play Morrowind... always always always wait. There is no logical reason not to, aside from the aforementioned.
I know waiting is always better. I would like to have a TES game that can run well on my laptop (it can't run Oblivion well and haven't bothered trying Skyrim) for when I'm at my dorm. And if it hasn't been less than $10 in the past 18 months, might be kind of pointless to wait.

There will be a sale during the winter right? I'll get it then whether it's $5 or now.

I wish we knew for sure if tomorrow will be a recap or not because I have some non-dailys I've been wanting since the advent of this sale.
Are there more sales tomorrow, or is this it?
Sigh, if you guys would just read the autumn sale timer is clearly for another 48 hours. Tomorrow will be the recap and maybe some surprises.

Now, they might do something for Cyber Monday as an addendum but who knows.
I didn't enjoy Limbo either, but was told the main point of the game was the symbolism of the story.
I bet you didn't get the intricate, layered allegory and sly symbolism of Duke Nukem Forever, either! For shame! There are decades worth of imagery and hidden meaning slathered between the **** jokes, old farts, and broken dreams.

Btw, I'm really disappointed with Steam and The Witcher 2. They couldn't beat a deal Amazon's had all week? Haha, wow. I think they're slipping...
Sigh, if you guys would just read the autumn sale timer is clearly for another 48 hours. Tomorrow will be the recap and maybe some surprises.
But it's so much easier to exasperate you by asking!

Also thank you. :D

You're either being intentionally ignorant to it or you're trying too hard to keep up your image of Indie Hater #1. There is definitely something to the story in Limbo; it won't change your perspective on life, or even video games, but to claim it isn't there is misleading to people who want to play it.

Plus, it's a really fun game. It got knocked a lot for its length, but $2.50 is a great price for it.

Back to non-Limbo stuff: I had heard the PS3 Splinter Cell collection was just PC ports (up-resed?), but I see that Steam is lacking Pandora Tomorrow. Regardless, for the prices on some of the Clancy games I might finally backfill SC and give R6 or GRAW a whirl.

Oh, yes, I did not miss that scrap of story as it is the only line describing the game in its promo material, apart from the unwarranted accolades it has received.

I'm not mad about a lack of plot or that it's got this minimalist aesthetic. I'm upset that the aesthetic is poured on thick with no follow-through. (Well that and the puzzles are mediocre and the whole game is a boring slog.) There's no mystery, there's no story, there's nothing to think about that any other indie game trying to play at being art would at least have the decency to throw in there. They went from the Newbie's Guide to Minimalist Game Aesthetics while skipping the steps about throwing in tension or mystery or something for the viewers to think about.

Calling people losers for liking a game is not cool.
You're an asshole.

We'll have to agree to disagree. This isn't image. Ask me about VVVVVV or Jamestown and I'll fall all over myself giving recommendations. It's about a game that was a monumental waste of time and a tiny amount of money.

Pandora Tomorrow is skippable, in my opinion. Hell, SC1 is skippable as well, really. Neither is especially bad but both are kinda forgettable.

The PS3 collection I think lacks the multiplayer and co-op of CT. You won't be playing much multiplayer CT any more because all of its flaws and exploits are made too known. The nail-biting tension is completely gone. Unless you round up a group of friends who don't know much about it... which, given it's CAG, it's entirely feasible. Great MP though.

It's easier to do the co-op levels with a friend, too. They're unique and pretty damn good. You should also try to run the quite good co-op campaign in Conviction if you can sucker someone else in joining in. The DLC levels have no story and can be played in the game's one-off modes SP or co-op but they're the best in the game by miles

anyone know if this can be activated on steam?
From an Amazon review

I just wanted to answer a few questions that I had before downloading this game from amazon, and I saw a few others had the same questions too. This was my first time downloading a game from amazon and with the exception of the painfully slow speed, everything went as smooth as butter. I will leave the review of the actual game to the others on here, they have already done a much more in depth job than i would have, and lets be honest we all know this game rocks anyway.

1) You do not have to download the entire game before receiving your activation key. You will receive an email with instructions on how to access it from the amazon site in your account somewhere.
2) Your activation key will not work with steam (darn) This is probably a no brainer for most of you, but I really was hoping just to buy a key from amazon and let steam do the rest. Unfortunately that is not possible.
3) The download was, for me at least, painfully slow. Granted the file was large, at least 5 or 6 GB for the installer, but it was still slower than steam by a longshot. You are looking at about 12 to 13 hours from the time you click 'buy' till the time you are patched and in game.
4) Steam advertises that their version of the game is version 2.0. This amazon version is the same as the steam version, it just has to patch several times to get there, but it handles it all automatically, all you have to do is click ok as each patch is applied. After the huge patch 2.0 is downloaded, another brief installer will bring you up to date. Everything happens automatically and is quite painless, given you are not impatient to play. At the time of writing, it stopped patching at version 2.1

That's about it. At the time I am writing this it is Black Friday and this game cost 16 bucks to download from amazon vs. $26.73 on Steam. Even though the price was better and the install and patching went smoothly, I would have paid the extra 10 bucks to get it from Steam if I could do it over again. And knowing my luck, this game will be 16 bucks on Steam tomorrow anyway, but now I'm just rambling. Its time to do some WITCHING!

It's just an image thing with this guy. He enjoys being an elitist douche, and that's why he's on my ignore list. ;)

Splinter Cell also caught my eye momentarily. The huge bundle pack seems a little excessive, given that quite a few of the games have such similar playing styles. Rainbow Six Vegas is my personal favorite among the R6 games, and $2.49 isn't a bad price for it.

I'm picking up The Witcher today. It's a great game for $2.49, with a good story and a considerable amount of content.

Winter Sale is in like a month. So just hold it out for Morrowind, might be a daily there.

Also as much as I like Steam, I bought the retail edition of Witcher 2 a while ago. Just to have the non digital bonuses. The Witcher 2 retail comes I think with the same stuff as the version on amazon (you get a DVD and a physical guide) but you get a letter with a coin inside too.

A quick question before I buy - do any of you know if the Rainbow Six Vegas games have English subtitles? the 360 version didn't so I'm wondering if the PC version does.
I'd be surprised if there was an encore day for such a short sale.
This is my expectation as well. Encore days are common (but not ALWAYS the case) in the two-week sales, but I don't remember there ever being one in the fall sale. Doesn't mean it won't be, but I expect new deals tomorrow.

So don't buy your wishlist items yet. Still a chance it'll be cheaper, whatever it is.

I wouldn't mind having another go at DX:HR and Orcs Must Die. I didn't realize OMD could be so much fun and my buddy could probably use the last bit of preorder DLC for DX:HR. And damn it I hope they put RFA back on sale. Upset that I missed it at $12.50

Bethesda games go on sale often enough that I really think you'll be kicking yourself if you get Morrowind before it gets a proper sale. Skyrim just came out though so they may drop it to $2.50 or $5 when they offer a Christmas sale on Skyrim but they might not.

That said, the dollar difference is a lot smaller than the angst if you really just want the satisfaction of having it.

You are going to play a tower defense game? Inconceivable! Also RFA is 7.50 on Impulse, I know it's Impulse, but it activates on steam. Here's the link

No way. I ALREADY DID.

I could not believe it either. My disbelief as I actually had FUN during the game was palpable.

Actually, I have played quite a few TD games and sample all the demos of them that come along. I love PvZ and bought Sanctum and Defense Grid against my better judgement. I've played more free ones on Iphone than I can count. The OMD demo didn't wow me but I couldn't resist OMD at that price. I now just want to gift it out to some other people. Just, my hatred of TD comes from familiarity with it. I try to find the good ones though the ones I dislike still seem to generally be well-produced.

Only thing I don't like is how OMD does an IMMEDIATE 180 from fun to tedious if you botch anything in the last two or three waves.

And you're seriously going to make me buy from a... eugh... Gamestop company aren't you? Asshole. Now I'm gonna have to find the Impulse thread and see all the good deals. Thanks though.

I don't usually find a videogame boring. I've played games people call them trash and I loved them.
I own over 700 games on Steam and consoles and there are about only 10 games I didn't like or found it boring. One of them is Limbo.

Many apparently liked it, but I really suggest you try the demo first.

Here is one more you can give a shot. I haven't played much of it yet, just the demo, and found it pretty fun, but I enjoy a good TD. This one also has co-op which is a pretty cool feature.
Orcs Must Die isn't a tower defense game, it's Home Alone featuring greenskins.
Always try the demo first if there is one available games are very subjective.

You can't really compare a digital copy Steam Sale to a physical copy Amazon sale:

Steam = Publishers/developers set the price
Amazon = Amazon sets the price

Valve basically just asks if publishers/developers would like to participate but the ultimate decision is up to them whereas Amazon clears stock based on potential and margins.

Completely different way of conducting sales.

I'm not sure if it has been answered or not but if I remember correctly Splinter Cell: Conviction had the DRM where you always had to be online all the time otherwise you could not play the game.

Then due to criticism Ubisoft changed the DRM where you only had to activate the game online once and that was it.

So does this DRM still apply for Conviction?
So do those Splinter Cell games NOT feature native controller support?
FWIW, I had no problems using a 360 controller with Splinter Cell: Conviction. Dunno about the other games, though.
which civ v dlc is recommended, or doesn't add much?
It's a bit strange for a series as mod friendly as Civilization to have DLC like maps and scenarios.

The mod community for the Civ games is fantastic and only get the DLC if there is a leader you want to play as.

Personally I didn't like Civilization V, it was a bit casual for my taste and still play Civ IV and its expansions....that's just me though :p

Tom Clancy pack seems like a great deal even if all you would play is half of them. I've always been hit and miss on Tom Clancy games. Definitely picking up both Hawx games though.
