Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Which retail CD Keys are accepted on Steam?

I'm tempted to buy Dungeon Defenders and Space Pirates and Zombies while they are still 50% off but why do I have a feeling they will be cheaper tomorrow for a Cyber Monday sale?

On top of that I've heard some people have had game save issues with Dungeon Defenders
Is Terraria for 4.99 worth picking up?
I believe that price is as low as it has been, except for the brief $2.50 price mistake. Very popular game, 2D Minecraft, can spend a lot of hours on it for the money.
Utopian, have you tried Portal 1 and 2? They are great KBM trainer games. You get the full First-Person experience, but since they're puzzle games, not action, everything happens at a very slow pace. There's a little timing involved at the end, but even those, you can work at your own pace.
I second that. I was so bad at FPS controls and the Portal games were a great, safe way to sort out controls without the fear of death or attack.

Divinity II DKS is a steal for $10. I'm not going to say that its the most polished rpg I've ever played, but it is quite fun. According to steam, I've put 73 hours in since I bought it last holiday sale (and I think I paid a little over $20 for it).

Red Faction:A and Fable III, I have picked up cheaper recently on Steam.

MtG:2012 is good fun for the price, for anyone who has played before.

Picked Up:
Deus Ex + Missing Link (amazon)
Two Worlds II + Pirate DLC
Fallout NV: Lonesome Road & Courier DLC
Drakensang
and $1.50 worth of MtG 2011 DLC

Then add in the fact that I also purchased Witcher 2 and Batman: AC and am knee-deep in Skyrim.

Whew.
Purchased. Thanks! :)
Thief: Deadly Shadows might not have say the as intricate missions as Thief: Dark Project, but it's a much more open game-world.
Regardless, both Dark Project and Deadly Shadows are great.

Far as I can tell, it's worth it if you like that type of game. Some people can sink hundreds of hours into a game like Terraria, while I got bored of it in the first 20 minutes. It's just not my type of game, though. So caveat emptor... just as long as you know what you're getting into. If you like that type of game, absolutely go for it.

Dunno if there's a demo, but if there is, definitely try it out before buying.

Thirded! Portal was one of my very first PC games.

For serious? Dead Space 2 is 5 dollars in the USA? It's 7,50 euros here! (10 bucks) ripoff. Not going to buy it.

Does anyone know if it's possible for a USA person to buy a non-pack game as a gift for me? (Dutch) If so I am looking for such a person :p

Terraria is a fun game. It's not necessarily good, but if you play it the way you want to play it, it can be a lot of fun. The way I needed to play it was fully co-op with a friend, with zero emphasis on building structures (only building what was necessary to bring traders around) and most emphasis placed on finding new materials for better weapons so we could fight the boss characters.

The problem with my style of play - the style that I think most regular gamers who play this game would have - is that, in spite of how open-ended this game sounds, there is definitely an end for a player who isn't interested in exercising creativity in a game world through building things. We built the best weapons and armor, beat the bosses, and immediately quit the game. Once there was no point, we stopped caring. However, that point came after 40+ in-game hours of play.

Is Terraria worth $5? Yes.

If all I have to do is gift it to you I would gladly take the $5 PayPal from you and send it over.

Is this confirmed as possible? I thought it was but just want to make sure.

It is as simple as gifting. If a backup purchaser is needed, I'll do it.

Sorry if this has been answered but I haven't been looking at this thread this weekend, but there wont be a recap day on this sale? So today is the last day of sales?

Yes, that's all you need to I have gifted games to a friend in Columbia before a few times.

I'll send you a PM :) for 5 dollars it's worth a shot.

*edit* deal sealed. Thanks mate!

This is my first time with a Steam sale so I'm not super familiar with how they work, so forgive me if this is a dumb question. If I have things on my wishlist that are discounted for the Autumn sale (33% or 50%) but never made it as a daily deal will they be at least that discounted during the next sale? I have enough of a backlog that I don't NEED any of them right now, but for example, if Torchlight isn't going to be $7.50 anytime in the near future I may want to pick it up now. If it will at least be that in the next month I'll wait.

i think torchlight specifically has been $5 in at least the last two winter sales.
if you dont want to play the games right now, you should wait.

In short, yes. Games that do not appear as daily deals are typically discounted as much or more during the next major sale.

No daily deals for me, just finished it off by picking up the Cthulhu/breath double pack and capsized. Will pick up orcs must die if there is a surprise recap on it tomorrow.
If Dead Space 2 didn't have all that DRM, I'd go for it. Sadly, I must pass, sticking with my singular purchase: LIMBO.

I await the Holiday Deals.
Dead Space 2 used to have SecuRom. It was removed.
The only drm it has now is TAGES allowing for 5 activations.
Apparently somwhere in the game directory, there is a deauthorize tool. You can use that to deauth when you uninstall or wtvr. If for some reason you run ou of all 5, you can contact EA customer support and theyll give it back.
It doesnt seem so bad. I myself would never be able to go through all 5 installs.

The discount will likely be the same, if not more, during the much larger Winter sale (sometime around Christmas). It's always a risk, however. You already know the #1 rule: buy the dailies if you want them, but wait until the last day for everything else. Steam may throw a surprise Cyber Monday sale tomorrow (or maybe just a recap day).

As for Torchlight specifically, it's been $5 during multiple sales, so if you don't need something to play now, it'll probably be a bit cheaper in the near future.

So I have a bunch of cheap indie games in my wishlist. Most of them are 75% and I"ll probably pick them up before the day is done, but some are still 50% off, including some titles I really want like Recettear. Are they likely to be on sale during the Christmas sale for even cheaper?

For $5, Dead Space 2 could delete itself forever after beating it, and I wouldn't have a problem with it.

Why do so many people believe others have seen the future? We don't know, though there is a good chance they will be at least the same price. So if you don't intend to play them before the christmas sale happens then why not hold off because they probably wouldn't be more expensive then.

Heh heh, thanks! I did play Portal...but I played it on Steam with a 360 controller.

When I watched gameplay videos of Vampire The Masquerade, it didn't seem like a game that required lightning-fast reflexes, so I think it's going to serve as my intro to real PC gaming.

I should probably get a reward for such a fine choice. ;)

50% is a good discount, but unless it's something you really want to play, there's always a good chance that a game will get a 75% discount, or at least a discount more than 50%. Steam has taught me to wait. I'm sure much of what's on sale now will be similarly on sale or less for the Christmas sale.

My small haul:
Dead Space 2 - $5
The Witcher Enhanced - $2.50
Dead Island - $15 (4-pack deal)

Never got the Skyrim sale I was looking for or The Witcher 2 $16 match with Amazon, but I'm still happy :) Shoulda bit on some of the cheapy indy games, but the X-mas sale is just around the corner!

Because I'm new to Steam and don't know how the sales usually work. I figured veteran PC gamers would kind of know how Valve operates. Maybe I should have rephrased the question. Like, how many games are NOT on sale in the Christmas sales?

Fixed. It is reasonable to expect, though not guaranteed, that the prices will not be more than current sale prices.

The big DRM list says that DS2 has Solidshield. I have another EA game which uses Solidshield and deactivating it is as simple as going to Start Menu>Games>right click on the game and choose deactivate.

http://steamdrm.flibitijibibo.com/the-big-drm-list/

$2.49 Nexus - The Jupiter Incident
$2.49 Dungeons of Dredmor
$4.99 Gemini Rue
$2.49 Limbo
$7.49 DX:HR: The Missing Link DLC
$5.35 Orcs Must Die + DLC
-----
$25.3

Pretty lame that my most expensive purchase was for a DLC :whistle2:#
I really wanted to get Divinity 2: DKS but with Skyrim out I think I'd just be adding an another open world RPG to my backlog.
So I have a bunch of cheap indie games in my wishlist. Most of them are 75% and I"ll probably pick them up before the day is done, but some are still 50% off, including some titles I really want like Recettear. Are they likely to be on sale during the Christmas sale for even cheaper?
Last Thanksgiving sale Recettear was only $1 as part of an Indie Story Pack and it was down to $4.99 for the 4th of July sale so odds are it will hit lower than $9.99 again. Unless you plan on playing it RIGHT NOW, then I would wait.

Steam sales are a balance of Current Price vs. Time. Most games will be cheaper if you wait, even if the percentage off is the same next time around the game may have gotten a price drop.

Smallest haul yet:

Dead Space 2
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction - Echelon Edition
Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Conviction - Insurgency Pack
Limbo

Just finished Limbo. Beginning was fun. It gradually just got more and more annoying. Couldn't believe I didn't get a single achievement except for finishing the game. Didn't realize the achievements were hidden eggs. Not a terrible game, but I didn't care enough to go back and fill out any more achievements. It just isn't fun enough to.
Why do so many people believe others have seen the future? We don't know, though there is a good chance they will be at least the same price. So if you don't intend to play them before the christmas sale happens then why not hold off because they probably wouldn't be more expensive then.
Here is the rule of how I deal with steam discount sales and I think most others learn to after a few years.

Ask yourself will I play this anytime soon? The Christmas sale is a month off, so look at what you own and plan on playing, look at your backlog and then ask yourself which of those games can you risk not being on sale next month. Personally iv got Wolverine, LBP2 and Prototype sitting next to my PS3. I also have a bunch of PSN games and I just picked up Mass Effect 1 and 2 as well as Orcs must Die during this steam sale. While I look and see a dozen hella cheap games on steam for $2.50 to $5.00 I want to play....I recognize I have enough to keep me busy far past the steam Christmas sale. So I will wait and then ask myself the same question at the Christmas sale.....these games are on sale. Will they ever go on sale cheaper and if so do I have stuff to keep me busy till then.
Because I'm new to Steam and don't know how the sales usually work. I figured veteran PC gamers would kind of know how Valve operates. Maybe I should have rephrased the question. Like, how many games are NOT on sale in the Christmas sales?
I would say at least 90% of the store goes on sale in some capacity during the Christmas and Summer sales. This year's Thanksgiving sale was quite a surprise in this regard, as last year only daily deals and select indie packs saw discounts.

Your safest bet is to purchase anything you think you need at 75% off or more - chances are it isn't going to go any lower than that. Even if it does it'll be a negligible savings. Things that are any less that 75%, I would hold off and wait for it to go on sale; and believe me - it WILL go on sale eventually.

Finally, since you're a Steam newcomer, I suggest you look at entire Publisher Packs. Usually, during major sales, these packs are further discounted giving a total of 75-90% drop on individual titles if purchased altogether. For example, Bethesda, Telltale Complete, Valve Pack, etc.

I purchased Dead Island and I'm probably going to get Divinity II before the sale is over. I am playing Skyrim currently (which I love), but it looks like the Divinity deal is too good to pass up since I love RPGs.
Fixed. It is reasonable to expect, though not guaranteed, that the prices will not be more than current sale prices.
That would be why I added the good chance before that.
So anyone else biting on Call of Cthulu or waiting for a better deal?
As everyone will tell you, Call of Cthulhu never goes on sale. If you want it, get it.
So anyone else biting on Call of Cthulu or waiting for a better deal?
Yeah, I grabbed it and Psychonauts. I don't remember either of them being on sale in the last 1.5-2 years, although one of my friends says they've hit $5 before in that time period. I seriously doubt that they will get any cheaper.
Does anyone still play Unreal Tournament 2004 online? Was thinking about picking that up, never played it before.
I dont know about online, but if youre a bit old school, that game is built for LAN parties.

So its the last day of the sale and I still have:
HL 1 Anthology
Riven
Zen Bound 2
Call of Cthulu
AIM Racing
Shift 2 Unleashed

sitting on my wishlist at 50%. Are there any of those that I should grab now?

Im okay waiting on most. I have my eye on Gary's Mod and not a ton of free time right now, but I don't want to miss out on anything that doesn't go on sale often.

Zen Bound 2 really isn't too amazing. It's pretty good for an hour or so, but it feels so much like it belongs on the iPad and would be a better experience there.

Me, I'd wait for a bigger discount.

Thank you for reminding me of Psychonauts.

Looks like my haul is:
CoC- $5
Psychonauts- $5
Limbo- $2.50
Witcher 1- $2.50
Runespell- $2.50

I didn't go overboard this time - I picked up:

Fallout: NV & expansions
Back to the Future
Dead Space 1&2

And I used some Amazon credit to get Dead Island when they price matched the daily deal, which activated on Steam anyway. Gonna trade off my console F:NV & Dead Space's. I've been trying to follow online instructions to convert my 360 Fallout save to PC, but no luck yet. If anyone has successfully done this & has any tips, I'd love a PM. The PC version sees the save, recognizes how much time I've put into it (over 50 hours...really don't wanna re-play all of that...) and shows a screenshot of where I was, but when I try to load it I get an error then it crashes out. :whistle2:(
