Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
The discount will likely be the same, if not more, during the much larger Winter sale (sometime around Christmas). It's always a risk, however. You already know the #1 rule: buy the dailies if you want them, but wait until the last day for everything else. Steam may throw a surprise Cyber Monday sale tomorrow (or maybe just a recap day).

As for Torchlight specifically, it's been $5 during multiple sales, so if you don't need something to play now, it'll probably be a bit cheaper in the near future.
Thanks for the information. If I downloaded Torchlight I'd probably bump it to the front of my list and start playing it, but I'm fine with waiting.

Okay, final haul.

Gifted a friend:
Renegade Ops - $4.14

Who gifted me
Puzzle Agent 2

Who gifted my husband
Mass Effect 2

___________

Gifts I got for my husband:
Magic the Gathering Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 - Deck Pack 1 - $1.19
Europa Universalis III - $3.74
The Witcher - $2.49

And for myself:
Sims Midieval - $14.99
Runespell: Overture $2.50
Faerie Solitaire $1.00

I also traded away Sanctum from the Royale bundle for Magicka. Trying to find someone who will trade my A.R.E.S. + Beserker Suit for Breath of Death/Call of Cthulu before the sale ends.

Total: $30.05

Couldn't escape buying Morrowind, but at least I am going to start playing it right now. It bumped everything on my to play list down, but it is worth it to relive one of my favorite RPGs.
Any thoughts on Legendary or Dark Sector? Both only $2.50 but got kinda not so great reviews as I recall.
dark sector was decent. at $2.50 i couldnt say anything against it

Orcs must die + DLC $5.35
Missing new vegas dlc $6.46
Deus Ex dlc $1.99
Splinter cell conviction + dlc $7.48
MTG dlc $3.18

Total = $24.46

More than I wanted to spend but overall better than expected. Orcs must die is looking to be my buy of the sale but Conviction is so far a lot of fun too.

My final haul for this sale:
Test Drive Unlimited 2 - $4.99
Splinter Cell Elite Echelon Pack + Insurgency DLC - $13.98
Limbo - $2.49
The Witcher - $2.49
Trials 2: Second Edition - $2.49
Eschalon: Book I - $3.75
Hamilton's Great Adventure + Retro Fever DLC - $2.73
Inside a Star Filled Sky - $2.00
Eversion - $1.25
Section 8: Prejudice - $3.74

I'm a bit disappointed that The Witcher 2 didn't go on a deeper discount. Ah well, there's always the winter sale.

Just picking up cheap stuff today. I think the $1 and $2 games are my favorite part of these sales lol

Bought:

Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood - $1.25
Second Sight - $2.49
Tobe's Vertical Adventure - $2.49
Blocks That Matter - $2
Cthulhu Saves the World/Breath of Death VII - $1
Insecticide Part 1 - $1.24
Lugaru HD - $2.50
Arx Fatalis - $2.49

And the only other thing I bought this sale was a Portal 2 two pack for $18.69.

So my total this sale - $34.15. Not too bad.
Need some opinions on these games, I can't get them all.

Unreal Tournament 3 $5 (Already own from Gamersgate but barely played it)
If they gave you a CD Key, you may want to try activating it on Steam. Epic added Steamworks after the game was released and anyone with a retail copy is able to activate it on Steam. I'm guessing, but know for certain, that Gamersgate CD Keys would fall into the same category.

What do people think of the Paradox titles? (Europa Universalis III, Hearts of Iron II/III, Victoria II)?

I'm thinking of getting one of those titles but I've heard there is a steep learning curve.

What are you all's recommendations and advice?

All three have a learning curve and it can be steep but if you stick with it you'll get the hang of it after so long. As for which ones best, well it depends I mean they're all good.

Europa III starts around 1400 something and ends mid 1800's I believe, can be practically any nation during that time period.

Victoria II is more of the colonial era starting 1800 something and ending 1936 I believe.

Hearts of Iron series takes place during WWII and starts 1936 and ends 1946 (unless you mod it to end differently)

They all do play differently but first you might want to decide which time period interest you the most.
Is steam going to have a cybermonday sale?
I'm wondering the same thing...

I'm a fan of history, and all three periods, so it's a bit hard choosing.

I heard if one has EU3, H&I II and Victoria one can play the from the 1400s until 1946 or something like that. Is that true?

Also if you know what's the difference between H&I II and II as well as Victoria I and II?
Any thoughts on Legendary or Dark Sector? Both only $2.50 but got kinda not so great reviews as I recall.
I enjoyed Dark Sector a lot on the 360. It got knocked for being very linear and straightforward but I found that to be part of its charm. It's not great, but for some reason I tend to like games like that a lot. Something about a lowered expectation allows me to just enjoy what it is. And what it is is a fun little action game, that doesn't seem to make complete sense, but keeps up a nice pace throughout.
Is steam going to have a cybermonday sale?
Usually it is all the last couple of days sales lumped together. Kind of a second chance.

Can I ask if anyone is a little underwhelmed with this Steam Sale? Compared to previous sales I mean...could be just me but nothing is truly OMG I gotta buy this asap. I even miss those ultra big library packages they offered awhile back...Not sure if its me or not.

for example, MW2 for $14.99? Seriously? The game is older than Dead Space 2 and yet DS2 is $4.99? Really?

Why do the system requirements to run Divinity II look almost impossibly low to me? And does this features native controller support or a mod community?
So its the last day of the sale and I still have:
HL 1 Anthology
Riven
Zen Bound 2
Call of Cthulu
AIM Racing
Shift 2 Unleashed

sitting on my wishlist at 50%. Are there any of those that I should grab now?
I didn't like Zen bound 2 at all, with KBM or Controller. Here is my Steam Recommends review:

A nifty idea. But this game doesn't deliver the down-tempo experience that the description states. Unlike Osmos or Eufloria (true down-tempo indie games), there is never a single second of time when you can sit back and enjoy this game's atmosphere while watching your plans unfold.
Zen Bound is basically a game of fidgeting and fighting with the controls until you get your desired result. The lack of a "z-axis" control means you don't get all the control you want, and instead this is 90% frustration, 10% grim satisfaction. There is no euphoria, no "a ha" moment in this game.

Presentation is attractive, and the sound is very good, too. But I do not recommend this game, even at the $2.50 price point that I paid during a Holiday Sale.

Followup after trying with a controller:
I like this game even less, now that I own an Xbox controller and I've found that this game doesn't support controllers. If ever there was a game that could benefit from controller support, this is it.

I thought it was a decent sale, with some gems. Now, if you already own or have no interest in said gems, it was a bit underwhelming.

As far as dailies go, I thought the following were all pretty decent deals, it's just that with the exception of DNF, I owned them all already. There were some non-daily games worth picking up as well.

Portal 2
Mass Effect 2
DNF
Fallout: NV
Dead Island
Orcs Must Die
Divinity II: DKS
MtG 2012
Dead Space 2

Several of the deals were priced higher than they had been previously during sales, which makes no sense to me. Risen, Fable III, Red Faction: Armageddon have all been cheaper.

A couple games were not discounted enough - Deus Ex should have been $20 and not $25, and the Witcher 2 discount was pretty pathetic.

And don't get too hung up on the MW2 price, CoD games routinely defy logic when it comes to age/pricing.

This has pretty much been a DLC sale for me. I'm hoping the Christmas Sale is a bit more tempting.

My final haul:

$2.49 Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X
$1.96 Sanctum DLC
$3.97 Fallout New Vegas DLC
$5.35 Orcs Must Die! + all DLC
I didn't like Zen bound 2 at all, with KBM or Controller.
Zen Bound is a game designed for a touch screen. I would never buy that type of game on Steam.

Which unreal tournament is the one to get if you only get one? I was just looking at unreal tournament 3 and it looked kinda interesting.

my haul:
dead space 2 - $4.99
the witcher - $2.49

didn't pick up much this time around, but i'm definitely happy with what i got. i also bought starcraft II a couple of days ago so all in all, it's been a good weekend for gaming (/bad weekend for my backlog).
First steam sale where I did not get anything :O
first time where i only got 1 thing :p

thinking of biting on shogun2. has it been any cheaper than 15 before?
Which unreal tournament is the one to get if you only get one? I was just looking at unreal tournament 3 and it looked kinda interesting.
I really like 2004

I didn't get a lot from the sale, but wasn't really looking for too many games in particular. I purchased

Tobes Adventure - 2.50
Operation flashpoint: Dragon raising -3.74
Dead space 2 - 4.99

I am really happy with all three. I wasn't expecting to much from the sales this week.
I really like 2004
Me too. Decided to pick up the whole unreal bundle. Played that a ton in my middle school/high school years. $10 seemed like a great price!

So far, I've only picked up Deus Ex: Human Revolution from Amazon for $20. Nothing through Steam, as I figured I'd have a little bit more cash during the Winter sale, and I have enough to keep me busy until then.
I can't believe what I'm going to say but MW2 at 15$ looks yummy.
I think that'd look better at $15 if it came w/ both DLC's. :p

Think about this from a business-sense.
COD series just SELLS, SELLS, SELLS. People buy it like crazy, even at often high prices.
Why drop your prices super-duper much, if it's STILL gonna always move tons of units?
Same goes for anything Blizzard does, too.

Penny Arcade Combo Pack 2.99
Limbo 2.49
Grand Theft Auto Complete Pack 12.49
SSHD Double Pack (US) 2.99
Empire and Napoleon: Total War - Game of the Year Edition 7.49
The Mawesome Pack 2.99
Orcs Must Die! 3.74
Orcs Must Die! - Artifacts of Power DLC 0.62
Orcs Must Die! - Lost Adventures DLC 0.99
Men of War: Collector Pack 2011 Holiday Sale 18.74
TOTAL: $55.53

This was my first steam sale. Good deals
I would say at least 90% of the store goes on sale in some capacity during the Christmas and Summer sales. This year's Thanksgiving sale was quite a surprise in this regard, as last year only daily deals and select indie packs saw discounts.

Your safest bet is to purchase anything you think you need at 75% off or more - chances are it isn't going to go any lower than that. Even if it does it'll be a negligible savings. Things that are any less that 75%, I would hold off and wait for it to go on sale; and believe me - it WILL go on sale eventually.

Finally, since you're a Steam newcomer, I suggest you look at entire Publisher Packs. Usually, during major sales, these packs are further discounted giving a total of 75-90% drop on individual titles if purchased altogether. For example, Bethesda, Telltale Complete, Valve Pack, etc.
Here's a question from another relative Steam newbie: do the publisher packs ever become daily deals? I picked up the THQ pack the last time it was on sale and was very happy with the value it presented. I've been waiting for the Winter sale so that I could buy others. Do they just get one big cut for the duration of the sale, or is it best to follow the "wait until the last day" rule?

Demolition, Inc. is actually a pretty sweet game. The Steam store page left me cold, but I watched a Youtube video of it and I gambled $2.50. It's a little on the casual side, but fun and addictive. It's like Pain meets Flock meets Burnout Crash.

Does anyone think the odds are fairly good that Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit will pop up again for $9.99 or less during the Winter Sale or whatever is next before the year is out?

yay I got my Magic 2012 daily! :bouncy:

someone mentioned it a few pages back but I will say it again, Greed Corp is a great little game. It's unique and the presentation is top notch.
Here's a question from another relative Steam newbie: do the publisher packs ever become daily deals? Publisher packs have generally not been daily deals. The value you get on them is already pretty large, so there's not much need to do a daily on them. So if you see one that you want, pick it up on any day of the sale.

I'm a sucker for the larger game bundles, too. There's so much gaming per dollar with them.

Probably gonna grab the Magic Expansion since i have 2012. Might even get the Deck Pack but 1.19 for 2 more decks? When the expansion is 1.99?

Why aren't the Epic Games items listed in the front page of steampowered.com? I almost missed them!

Edit: I guess it is if you scroll through the specials 10 at a time, but I meant at the top or list Epic as a publisher.

Not sure but might be because I don't think epic publishes much on their own. Most of their games have a larger publisher behind them.
Why do the system requirements to run Divinity II look almost impossibly low to me? And does this features native controller support or a mod community?
It's an old engine. If you can run Oblivion, or heck even Morrowind with all the graphic overhaul mods then you can basically run this game because it's the same engine.

Unfortunately, although there is a 360 version and controller support on the PC really shouldn't have been that difficult to do, there is none natively. If you want it you will have to use something like xpadder but I can't speak for it personally since I have never tried it for Divinity II.

As for mods, there are some but nothing like the amount and variety you will find for Bethesda games.

With all of the newcomers to Steam that cropped up this sale, I took the liberty of expanding my earlier post of tips on Steam sales and posted it in a blog. I'll keep the link in my sig for anyone who may need it.

If anyone thinks I should add anything, let me know.
