Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
I purchased the Monkey Island Complete Pack on 10/16/2010 for only $5 - so it's been on sale for a bit less. However, it seems more likely that the Telltale Complete Pack will go on sale instead of individual titles (though Sam and Max often make a daily deal for these sales).
Yeah, the Telltale Complete Pack is pretty much guaranteed to be on sale (since the developer bundles always are), and that's generally a better deal anyways. I'd guess we'll also see at least one of the Telltale series be a daily deal, since that always seems to happen. But honestly, the game is worth the $8.75, in my opinion.

It's just a shame Telltale's Holiday Sale is so lackluster this year. Guess I got spoiled by the 50-75% off days they were running last year. I own too much of their stuff to benefit from the 25% off $99+!

As much as I love Telltale, I think I'm done buying their stuff at full price. They're ALWAYS $10 very shortly after the season ends.

DUDE. THE SHIP BETA. I just submitted a tip to Joystiq about this. Here's what I wrote, so everyone can see why this is so cool:

"A list has begun to circulate of what appear to be the upcoming Steam Holiday Sale games, as inferred through their value entries and changes in Steam's games database. Here is the link:

"Search for "Holiday" to find the Holiday listings.

"Of particular note is an item marked "Holiday Sale 2011 Gift The Ship Beta". (linked in the Related URL, and again here: http://dedicated.heffebaycay.fr/cdr_test/sub/12607 ) The Ship, for reference, is an ultimately dead Source multiplayer game developed by Outerlight Ltd. which as far as I know is the originator of the concept popularized by AC:B's multiplayer. Unfortunately, it was not a commercial success and Outerlight would later try it once more with Bloody Good Time before the developer folded.

"However, it appears an indie developer called Blazing Griffin acquired the rights to The Ship, and stated that they see a lot of untapped potential in what The Ship has to offer as a license and concept, and have gone on to say that they intend to expand on the license soon. The Steam listing, coupled with this acquisition, has me pretty excited for what I hope to be a game that the gaming public will find more palatable this time around because of AC:B's popularity. Here is the Blazing Griffin statement about the acquisition of The Ship's license:

"They have also been coy about what the future holds for The Ship on their forums, but no announcements about a beta for a new version of The Ship have been made.

"I hope I'm right!"

Basically, The Ship is Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood's multiplayer concept, except it was created in 2006. The Ship's rights were bought by a new dev in November of this year, and they have said as recently as this month that something new for The Ship is coming soon. The entry for The Ship Beta on the Steam list linked above is almost certainly that new thing: A multiplayer beta for a new version of The Ship. STOOOOOOKED

It's nice to see that other than some of the big names of the year, their sale will be the same stuff they have put on sale the past two years and indie games that people already bought from the bundles. I was really hoping for different selection.

Well, as we all know, all Steam users have been using the service at least 2 years and buy every indie bundle, so you make a lot of sense. They should really cater to your specific needs this time around.

Damn straight, because I specifically said that they should sell only the games I want. That's right, I didn't. I just pointed out that as someone who has participated in their sales for the past two years, I have noticed that they are repeating themselves on the majority of their games. By doing so, there isn't a whole lot of incentive for gamers who have been buying from them even for a year, to spend a lot of money with them since there is a good chance they have already bought the same games last year or even this year during the summer sale.

Now, lets take your idiotic logic and turn it around to sound just as dumb. Steam should continue to sell the same games year after year so that only the new customers can take advantage of the savings. Since, as we all know, as soon as a person buys from Steam, they never buy from the again.

God forbid Valve makes an effort to, I don't know, sell a mixture of games that they have sold in the past and games that haven't been part of the big sale in the past as well. That way everyone has the chance to get something they haven't bought or seen before.

Jerk.

As far as I can tell that's exactly the case. I see quite some newer games in that list, so there seems to be a nice amount of new stuff on sale. The only question is: will the sale be nice enough to warrant a purchase? Because as much as I want Skyrim for example, I would still not bite if it's only 25% off. Due to my huge backlog of other unplayed games.

It wouldn't make smart business sense for Valve to discount all new games every sale, etc. Some repeats will likely have a lower price or at least the same price for newcomers. Steam doesn't and shouldn't cater to the cheapest of the cheap with 100 game backlogs. They wouldn't be around anymore if they did.

For many people 25% off of Skyrim would be a great deal considering it's rarely on sale and one of the years biggest games. Also, some people would love repeats if they didn't/couldn't buy the repeated game during a previous sale, etc.

Hmmm...not seeing any Capcom games on that list at first glance. I am hoping to get Super Street Fighter 4: AE for a decent price during the sale.

Hehe... hurts doesn't it? I've been waiting for a $10 Dead Rising 2 forever it seems.

I see Space Marine, Skyrim, The Witcher 2, Rage, Saints Row 3 and Serious Sam 3 there. Hopefully we'll get some sweet deals on those, but I'm not expecting more than 50% off. Will most likely be in the 25%-40% off range.

I'd like Dead Rising 2 for $10 as well. The main thing I'm looking for is Fallout 3 GOTY for $10 and it's on the list which I guess isn't a big surprise. I might consider Rage for $20 but I figure that price is not likely.

Now now, We don't need two threads with bickering about Limbo to happen anytime Limbo is mentioned. How about we just say that you dislike Limbo for the reasons in your first sentence, but then omit your second sentence because all it is doing is trying to start a fight.

I'll take that list with a grain of salt. Lots of repeats, but lots of good stuff. May pick up some stuff I've missed in the past. I've recently learned my game computer is more powerful than I thought it was.

Also, great price on Limbo. Definitely worth experiencing, although the beginnings are definitely better than the end.

The wait for the winter sale continues....

Hoping Bioshock is 2.50. Might also grab Fallout GOTY if its 5. Im hoping Trine 2 goes on sale as well as the Defense Grid DLC

Though I do agree with your opinion on Limbo.

I applaud your ability to come at this from such a level but for me I've spent so many months watching people talk about this game with a level of arrogance while holding their metaphysical pinky in the air that I just can't be a mature adult about it lol

I grabbed Limbo for the same price during the Black Friday sale. It's totally alright.

I really, really enjoyed the first hour or so, but it really starts to wear out its welcome after a while. What starts as a really fun, atmospheric puzzle platformer quickly becomes a really boring, self-indulgent puzzle platformer.

I know a lot of people complained about its short length back when it first came out, but man do I wish this game was half as long as it is.

For me, Limbo is like a crappy Braid. I know they're pretty different, but they're also pretty similar. I loved the hell out of Braid. I couldn't get into Limbo.

Edit: Limbo is definitely worth the $2.50. It isn't exactly a crappy game. I was just saying I think it's crappy compared to how awesome Braid is.

Lets just agree to disagree. *lifts my metaphysical pinky* It really comes down to what you are looking for and what a "game" is. We are just now starting to get games that aren't really about the gameplay or graphics etc but about something more than that. Limbo is more about atmosphere and does a really good job of it. The first half of that game is great but it does taper off. I personally really appreciate games that in my opinion are trying something new or different and can create thoughts, emotions, or feelings that haven't been done before. It gives me hope for an evolving art form. I do see though how as with any media there are going to be those that don't appreciate it. After all Family Guy goes on season after season but Arrested Development got canceled.

If you really wish games had easier puzzles, more block pushing, were slower, had less music, graphics, plot, or intelligence, you'll love Limbo.

It's not expressly bad but it's divisive precisely because it got a lot of undeserved critical praise for feigning at being an experience. It didn't really succeed at that but hit enough notes to enraptured just enough people.

It ain't good either but you buy worse indie games for $2,50. Don't lie. Mostly though what struck me was how staggeringly shallow it was despite bearing all the trappings of something less trite

Limbo is one of those games I'd be willing to wait 3 years to pick up in some random indie bundle.

In comparisons to Braid...I personally thought Braid was brilliant, and that the Limbo demo was just stupid and confusing. Braid made me think and had beautiful visuals and music.

I played the demo for a half hour, I would say it was somewhat of an experience considering the atmosphere and what I considered to be a unique visual style. It was pretty awesome. Haven't played the full game yet but I own it.

I look at Limbo this way. You MUST MUST MUST like environmental puzzles. The game has a gorgeous aesthetic and can be creative at times.....but 90% of the game is just figuring out how to interact with your environment to get past whatever hurdle is in your way. Literally every few seconds you will hit a giant spider, a canyon, kids chucking spears at you or some other environmental hazard that you must get past.

If you want to platform, kill stuff or command armies it wont be the game for you. If however the idea of thinking "O I can drag that bear trap to stop that monster" is appealing its a great game.

Both games seem like they were trying far too hard to be like "look how indy and cool we are". Both games tried to touch upon subjects and ideas that they didnt execute well and didnt fit with the gameplay. Bastion is the first indy game that to me actually accomplished sending a few messages without ramming them down your throat or being pretentious.

I see Psychonauts, E.Y.E. and Morrowind on that list. If all three of them hits $5, my Holiday Sale is perfect. Not much else I know I want.

These indie bundles have been giving me games I want at rock bottom prices. I love it.

Also god damn I love Cave Story. I have it on WiiWare but playing it on my PC with better more cleaner graphics makes it a better experience. Cave Story+ is easily my favorite indie game now.

Yeah, my backlog is like 25 games deeper just from indie bundles from the last few months. I swear, all these indie bundles and Steam sales are making me ignore my 3DS and 360.

Also god damn I love Cave Story. I have it on WiiWare but playing it on my PC with better more cleaner graphics makes it a better experience. Cave Story+ is easily my favorite indie game now.
I moved Cave Story from my backlog to the forefront, so I'm playing it now and it's great fun.
I see Psychonauts, E.Y.E. and Morrowind on that list. If all three of them hits $5, my Holiday Sale is perfect. Not much else I know I want.
I hope Psychonauts is cheaper than $5. They offered it for $2 at one point. At that price, I might consider rebuying it.

A few weeks ago, I was glad that my wishlist was getting smaller. I guess I forgot to factor in the release of new games. Im back to where I started now... It never ends. God damn you steam.

Damn, must of missed it when it was $2. That price is a no brainer. I will still get it at $5 but $2 would be sweet.

Also god damn I am becoming a true Steam CAG. I saw Nuclear Dawn was the weekly but I thought to myself, even if I liked the game $11 is still too much, lol (never tried it before).
