Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Curse Magicka, I am tempted by that new dlc pack they released not to long ago. :/ Steams trying to nickle and dime me to death before the big sale.
has magicka ever gone beyond 75% discount? I am tempted just to buy all of it for less than $7 bucks...
The base game itself has never dropped below $2.50 to my knowledge and as far as the complete collections price going any lower. It would depend on if they add any more dlc before next time its on sale.

The Magicka collection was $3.99 at Amazon earlier this week. That's what I picked it up for. Doesn't include the newest DLC though.

Is there a quick and easy way to see what DLC I have for a game? Each time I've looked it's never really obvious as to what has been purchased and what hasn't.

Right click on a game and choose view downloadable content. That's everything that you own.

I just completed Cave Story +. Great game.

Also, I think I'm gonna participate in the purported holiday event in a few days. I didn't care enough to do anything during the summer sale but what the hell., I have the time and money.

How long did it take you to beat it? For what it's worth I don't mind if a game is "short" (relative term, I know) just if a game is fun every step of the way. So far in my time playing it it's like a 25lb sack of fun for every step I take. I love this game!

It took me 7.6 hours, although there were some extra things I didn't do.

Nice! I have a bit of a backlog at the moment with some 3DS games but I wanted to get back to this soon. Sounds like I stand a good chance of finishing :D

I've heard only good things about Cave Story. I check out the free flash version once, meh. I guess you have to play a little longer to get into it? Perhaps this version is better then the free flash version?

Took me 5.3 hours but there is stuff that I didn't do so I will probably replay it again sometime.

So you only have to take 160 steps to have tons of fun!? Launching it now. :D

Hm. Cave Story was originally released as a freeware binary -- in Japanese, but a fan translation group made a translation patch for it. To my knowledge there isn't a flash version, but I wouldn't be surprised if someone tried to port it at some point.

At any rate, Cave Story is the game that introduced me to indie gaming -- and brought me back to videogames after a hiatus -- so I have nothing but good things to say about it. It's charming, controls like a breeze, has a fun plot, ample extras and secrets to discover, multiple endings, and lots of replay value.

Just wanted to point out that the new Dungeon Defenders DLC (Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards) is out. It's part 1 of 4, costs $3.99. All the features in the spoiler below. You can also pre-purchase all 4 parts for 25% off right now (you get part 1 now and the others when they're released). I know 25% off isn't prime cheap ass territory, but I dig the game and the developer a lot so I'm probably gonna grab it. Deal runs through the end of the year and won't be discounted any further this year according to Trendy Entertainment (source from Trendy forums). And yes the year ends in a few weeks. :)

Key Features:

 • The Quest for the Lost Eternia Shards: Part 1 Campaign Mission
 • Portal Defense Challenge Mission
 • Lifestream Hollow Uber Monster Fest Challenge Mission
 • Lifestream Hollow PvP Battleground
 • Spiderling Enemy
 • Queen Spider Boss
 • 10 ALL NEW Weapons
 • New “Mythical” Quality Loot Drops
 • New Shroomite Familiar
 • Unique Ranger Outfit
Purchase all 4 DLCs when they are released to unlock extra content as well as Nightmare Mode; an even harder difficulty rewarding new loot and incorporating all of the released enemies throughout the core-campaign. Early access to Nightmare mode is only for people who purchase the complete pack.

Yeah, grabbed the Stars are Left and the Gamer Bundle. Was considering the Holiday/Horror pack, but not sure I'm really a fan of Challenge/Versus mode. Had previously gotten everything else, so I think those are the only two I'm really missing at this point.
All those updates and none of them were for Nightsky HD. Sad.
So the Steam version is the lower-res version? So weird because the HD executable was included as a direct, DRM-free download from the HIB.

Was browsing the Steam CDR this evening and saw that (besides the usual publisher packs and another batch of Winter Sale "Gift" subs being added) we'll be in for a few more indie packs.
"Awesome Indie Bundle"
Rock of Ages
Eufloria
Swords & Soldiers HD
Xotic
Jamestown
Tobe's Vertical Adventure
Waves
Blocks That Matter
The Binding of Isaac
Sideway

"Super Indie Bundle"
Limbo
Fractal
Hacker: Evolution
Gemini Rue
Revenge of the Titans
Solar 2
Dungeons of Dredmor
Bunch of Heroes
LightFish
Cave Story+

"Mega Indie Bundle"
Everyday Shooter
Zombie Driver
Iron Grip: Warlord
Atom Zombie Smasher
Sanctum
Demolition, Inc.
Runespell: Overture
Rochard
Avadon: The Black Fortress
Sequence

As is always the case, it's a pity that there's such overlap with the other Steam keys one has been able to amass in the recent months.

There are about 12 games in those that I obtained from other indie bundles in the last few months..

They should make an indie bundle where you can mix and match games. With somewhat of a tier system, it could work. Something like this:

Tier 1:
Super Meat Boy
LIMBO
Rochard
Sideway

Tier 2:
Zombie Driver
Everyday Shooter
Jamestown
Sanctum

Tier 3:
Cave Story+
Crayon Physics Deluxe
And Yet It Moves
World of Goo

Just some kind of system similar to that so people couldn't abuse the system and only get the most expensive games.

What exactly is the content description record viewer?

Those names are pretty generic. I wonder if it is a Steam put together bundle like the Super Meat Boy Anniversary Pack was. Weren't those bundles with "extra copies".

Alot are coming with holiday achievements so that may be what it is.

A year ago I'd have probably bought all those bundles, but just too many either repeats from Humbles/Royales or ones I bought individually. Maybe if they offer extras.

Those are some great bundles, but as others have already noted, they're far less appealing to those of us who follow the various offsite bundles.

However, these would make some great gifts for friends who haven't been on top of the pwyw bundles or have only recently gotten into PC gaming and/or Steam. I look forward to seeing what kind of price point these are given. With ten games each, $20 would be reasonable. $10 would bring them in line with the 5 for $5 they've had in the past and would be nothing short of excellent.

Just started playing Puzzle Agent 2, and I quickly got an achievement for Christmas Tree Census. It's obviously an achievement for the Christmas sale. The achievement doesn't show properly unlocked, but I assume it will unlock once the sale goes live.

I like the idea of that, but I wonder how they would sell it to the devs that are in the lower tiers? It makes it seem like Steam is ranking each game, which is something that could strain some relationships.

I own so many games in Steam now that getting DLC is the least of my concern! I am hoping for a discount on the new Defense Grid DLC because I love that game.

I am still neck deep in Skyrim and got Radiant Historia for the DS, so those with my backlog make for lots to catch up! Hopefully I am getting BF3 and Saints Row the Third for Christmas :D

For those thinking about Cave Story, it's fantastic. The beginning is slow, but it's a megaman/metroid style game that gets challenging and has a great story.

Already have the game, but I'm trying to decide whether or not to snag up the Rise of the Samurai campaign DLC or if it may even hit 75% off during the winter sale.
tw:shogun 2, played it for 93 hours, finished once the campaign and DLC. the best tw so far.
So would you say it isn't worth 10$?

It is worth 10$+ if you like the TW games. I would not spend 93 hours playing it if it is not worth playing since i have a huge backlog (300+ games, i hoard console games lol). I will play it again once the new announced DLC comes out, a standalone DLC btw. March 2012 release.

I am wondering if anyone has an extra coupon for The Reckoning from buying Dungeon Siege 3 they were not going to use. Interested in getting that game. PM me if you do. Thanks!

Had to get shogun 2 and all the DLC even I've barely touched the tutorials only in medieval 2 and empire. Psyched about the blood DLC with decapitations and limb severing >=]

I'm holding off for a bundle on shogun. I've been burnt too many times by the total war series not having decent deals on dlc. The last sale the dlc for empire and Napoleon was more than the package with both games and all the dlc.

Yeah, can't decide on Shogun.

It is probably the top game on my wishlist on Steam, but not sure if I should hold out for next week and hope for 75% off or some kind of bundle.

Thoughts?

This is coming from someone who has a medium size backlog (about 20 games). Ask yourself this: Will you play the game immediately? If not, you're probably better off waiting. For example, I bought Portal 2 during the Autumn sale despite the fact that it may be cheaper during the holiday sale because it was cheap enough and i knew I would play it right away.
Ask yourself this: Will you play the game immediately? If not, you're probably better off waiting.
The thing is that I get a kick out of launching a new game for the first time. I also get a kick out of getting a good deal! :).

Whether or not I play it for a significant amount of time, is based on how it takes me.

Actually I have spent all year getting to Backlog 0. All I have is Deus Ex (about 75% complete), and Skyrim and Battlefield (I consider these "unbeatable" games since there seems to be an infinite amount of possible playtime, or close to infinite). So I actually might.

I think I just talked myself into it.

I mentioned this before, but the way I do it, is once its on the Wishlist, I still don't buy it unless its 75% off. The top games on my wishlist have been the original Half-life, Race 07 and The Longest Journey since I rediscovered Steam this Summer. By not buying those, I have been able to keep my backlog small and have actually finished about a game or two a month. and when I do buy them, I will end up saving about 5$ over if I had bought them at various times during the year.

In other words, I would wait.
Yeah, can't decide on Shogun.

It is probably the top game on my wishlist on Steam, but not sure if I should hold out for next week and hope for 75% off or some kind of bundle.

Thoughts?
Be strong my CAG brotha. pROvIs is right - the TW games go on sale all the time and inevitably they get a GOTY version with all the DLC. And then it gets cheap. Don't be terribly tempted by the cheap vanilla game unless you're just a big fan and have plans to play it right away.
