Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Got a copy of Portal for my free gift. Already have the game but if someone here wants it and didn't get it for free back when it was free, send me a PM and I'll gift it to you.

edit : Claimed.
Steam was really flaky for me this morning; it would keep resetting my cart, and on my second purchase of the day, I would get to the verification page and one of the games wouldn't quite show up. I persisted for awhile and eventually got everything I wanted.
I've been trying to buy the couple of games several dozen times over the past day and I've never been able to get the payment info page to show up in a functional way. The rest of the store seems to work fine, so it's odd that the process of purchasing a game is so broken for me. I can't imagine that the website is on its own servers, but I guess I could try that route to see if that works.

Edit: Got the error a few more times on the website before I magically got through to buy Chantelise, though I wish that it had worked when Bunch of Heroes was on sale. I'm hoping that they bring back that first day's deals on a later date to make up for the issues.

Lol... They haven't even been daily achievements yet... You need to wait until they're daily cheevos before you can actually get their respective prizes. I thought that was a "given" lol...

Pshawbaswahsssaa.... You and you logic....

If anyone wants the Tropico 4 achievement quickly a nice person in the Steam forums uploaded a save file. It will pop instantly once the file has loaded. I got coal...

Ok I played poker night for 2 hours today and no achievement for the 3 kings so I am saying fuck it. I don't ever want to play that game again. I mean it has great writing but even though I know poker is random luck, I swear they have some good luck charm on the opponents. I can't say how many oh pull that one card out of the whole deck they needed on a all in bet they got, lol.

Redeeming coal for coupons- unacceptable Steam.

Clarification please: If I redeem my coal for a worthless coupon that coal is no longer used for the grand prize?
Redeeming coal for coupons- unacceptable Steam.

that's my interpretation.
that's my interpretation.
I think that's right. Its like - take your chance for a free game or take your chances toward the grand prize. From going through some posts here its not worth going for that free game... especially when you can end up with a coupon. In my mind, the coal is worth more than the coupon...
How long does that Psychonauts achievement take? If I don't do anything on my PC tonight I may get it downloaded for tomorrow morning, but I don't want to do that if it will take awhile to get it done.
From a new game, and having played about halfway through the whole thing maybe five years ago, it took me an hour and ten minutes. I skipped all of the cutscenes and conversations.

My free gift yesterday was 25% off a Valve game. Too bad I already own all of them. The gift for looking at the gift gave me coal. Achievements for Psychonauts, Spiral Knights, and Dungeons all gave me coal. I've done most of the future achievements that I can, minus Super Meat Boy, Bit.Trip Runner, Magicka, and Cave Story+.

My thinking is the odds of winning any prize in the final drawing is akin to winning the lottery. So I'll take my chances making the coal into a present. Sure it could be a coupon but it can't be raining free games.

It was but the fellow above me had phrased it as though he had gotten gifts already for them
I'd say use a save game for Psychonauts because it's a good game and doesn't deserve to be rushed through to get an achievement.
That is why I'll be using one. I love that game. I don't have time to start in on it again with the holidays and so much other game stuff happening right now and I sure as hell don't want to rush through what are the best parts.
don't do it game is awful, it seriously has no redeeming qualities. I loved all the original Duke Nukems but this was just terrible if you want to spend money on Duke Nukem buy Duke Nukem 3D on XBLA
I hate feeling forced into defending Duke, but I'm doing so only because it isn't as bloody horrible as it's made out to be. There are fun moments. There are a few good laughs. The shooting is generally decent. It gets a lot of hate, and deservedly so, but at a big discount like this it's worth a look for those who are curious or for fans of the genre.
It was but the fellow above me had phrased it as though he had gotten gifts already for them
Ah, well he's just on crack. Obviously you have to wait for the cheevo to become daily, to benefit from completing it.
Ok I played poker night for 2 hours today and no achievement for the 3 kings so I am saying fuck it.
Heh, that's what I was just doing, too. It seems to me that the best thing to do is to get it down to one opponent and then try to prolong the tournament. With only the two of you, there's less a chance that kings will end up in others' holes.

I have to agree, though. There's not much you can do to make it happen. In the end, it comes down to the RNG.
Aww I got coal, so hoping for something much better since I hardly ever use my steam :(
I got a load of coal also. I was hoping for something better for the opposite reason.

Hurray, my first freebie game was Counter Strike Source. I don't even really want it, but I do JUST for the achievement associated with it. =\

What to do.

I endured 40 minutes of that unpleasant Spiral Knights game tonight. Got a coupon for 66% off of Singularity. As coupons go, that's not too shabby a discount for a $30 game. I have a friend who wants it, I'm sure I can pass him the coupon.

Anomaly Warzone Earth netted me another coal. Current count:
2 coals, 1 50% Valve coupon, 1 66% Singularity coupon.
Crap, I missed Metro2033 and Amnesia for $5, well does anyone know if Stalker Clear Sky is any good? I've been eyeing it but I'm not sure whether to bite or not.
Your followup post says that you haven't played STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl yet. I would not play Clear Sky first, as it's the weakest of the three. Play them in order of release.

For each piece of coal in your inventory, you have an entry into the grand prize drawing, which takes place January 2nd.

Alternatively, 7 pieces of Coal may be crafted here into a prize from the Great Gift Pile.
See the alternatively part. Alternatively means "otherwise: or instead of that". So its actually very clearly worded. You use the coal as a coupon and you forfeit that entry into the drawing.
I got a load of coal also. I was hoping for something better for the opposite reason.
I've been starting to use it more and more ever since I got Skyrim but I still prefer my consoles more than my stupid laptop, still I hate goal. But I will say that Steam has opened my eyes to a ton of good pc games I do want.
Man why did I craft 7 coal. All I got was a useless 10% off 2K coupon.
yikes. that is rough. think that pretty much seals the deal for me... hanging on to my coal.

Ditto.

Thanks for the quote, didnt really need the clarification of alternatively, but that was done more for you than me.

Got Flatout for Bunch of Heroes Achievement today (which I also got from Psychonaunt achievement), I already have Flatout so if someone want to trade a game for it. PM me.

I've yet to read anyone even getting anything decent for the achievements, besides coal, which yields even worse results. I'm not gonna be spending on a whim hoping i get something neat.

Is Tropico 4 good? Better than SimCity 4? I really like the music in Sim City 4.

3 coals. 33% Valve. 50% Dungeon Defenders, 50% Frozen Synapse, and 50% Revenge of Titans. All useless, I have all those. Getting the achievements is quite fun. Now to decide if I want to get Tropico 4 for the achievement/game itself. It reviewed pretty well.

That's strange. Anamoly Warzone didn't go any lower for its achievement day. Is this normal? If its not a daily & an achievement, but an achievement only, its normal sale price?
Dungeons of Dredmor is pretty fun. All those Indie Packs I've bought are paying off I guess. :)

Downside... got more coal and had to play part of Spiral Knights... never again.

Upside.... I bought Dungeons of Dredmor on a whim for the achievement and I LOVE the game. Got me a 33% off Skyrim code... which is neither horrible or great I guess.

Tropico (or at least Topico 3) is really good sim. Really enjoyed Tropico 3 and I think 4 is just more stuff and slightly better graphics. The music is tropical (for obvious reasons) so, if that's your thing. Go for it as the game is enjoyable.

Attention people going for the Poker Night at the Inventory achievement:

The Three Kings was originally going to be the prize-bearing feat, but due to Valve not being happy with the randomness involved, they added the achievement for winning 12 hands. Apparently Valve wasn't happy that potentially someone could try for the whole sale to get it and come up empty-handed, so they had then change it and all the programmers were walking around muttering about how poker is random, and what did they expect? So yeah, just win your 12 hands and call it a day.

Source: my friend who works there.

TL;DR: Skip the 3 kings, just win 12 hands. (Easy, peasy, beautful: Dove or Squirrel?)

Ugh, just put in 2 hours on champions: free for all to get the achievement and I'm not even close to being done. Why is this so hard?

I decided to go back to poker night, 4.5 hours total for the damn achievement, but I got it. I also got a Straight Flush in the mix as well which is cool and I did get all the TF2 items.

Of the games I own, I still have to do Cave Story+, DoD Source, Dungeon Defenders, Defcon, Dino D-Day, Fate of The World, Magicka, Sanctium and Spacechem.

Damn I have a lot of games on the list

But...but...I already got it
But...but...I already got it
:(

Me too. And my friend from Telltale spent like 5 hours playing to get it and was pissed at the dudes who made it.

I literally had 3 games on my Steam account (Oblivion, ME1 + 2) and I got a 50% of Valve coupon (basically worthless) and Napoleon: Total War for free. Not bad. Was pleasantly surprised, especially since I never would have tried Napoleon otherwise.

Today I finally grabbed all the Half Life stuff (been meaning to play them again) and the Double Fine stuff along with Dungeons of Dredmor. Backlog is now pretty large...

I watched some Youtube videos of DNF and the DLC for it and boy howdy it convinced me not to buy it real fast. Snapped me out of whatever spell they had that magically convinced me that DNF would not be utter crap with some magic DLC campaign.

Thanks a bunch to you all who tried to stop me from buying DNF. You are heroes, every one of you. You stopped me from becoming a statistic.

i feel a little bad for those who payed full price when it came out.
Any quick opinions on Sacred 1 and 2? Price is still a little high for my taste. I think i'll hold off.
I have Sacred 2 on console and it's a great game. I've spent countless hours playing it with a friend. The story/voice acting is cheesy and the production values are pretty cheap. However it's a great top down action RPG, similar to Diablo and the like. However I would advise you to pass on this and hope for a lower price. It's an old game and I feel you can wait until it's 75% off. Also I hear there's a coupon for S2 for 75% as one of the gift. Besides, I hear the online aspect of the game is unstable and prone to crashes on any PC.

Also S2 has DLC, which is not available on steam atm.

I would really like to sit down with whoever came up with this coupon idea. They're equivalent to giving you nothing since the games you get coupons on are cheaper during the current sale than they would be if you used the coupon once it became valid in January. There is absolutely zero point to them. I'd rather they tell me I'm getting nothing instead of cluttering up a screen with useless coupons.

I've decided to craft as much coal as I can. Basically because I already have such a huge backlog on Steam, I don't think I actually WANT to win the big prize.
