Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
how hard is this rise of immortals acheivement to get if i've never played? Looks like it's not working or something?
I completed the achievement recently. It's not that hard, just hit a person and run away 10 times. Try to stay with the rest of your team as well to guarantee an assist. Also stick with the easier characters (it'll say beginner, intermediate, expert, etc.). I played as the Vampiric Tank character and just spammed two moves.

The problems really are trying to register your account. But once you do, it's fairly easy to get. You just have to play the game for maybe 20 min.

Exactly, I've been waiting half of the day to register my account, the site refuses to load the registration page.
Wow, that seems like a great way to lose your account
By no means should you run wild with it, but I used it when my Orcs Must Die achievement didn't register properly for the giveaway. I was able to relock it and unlock it again, and it registered properly.

Just wanted to say that E.Y.E is really cool. Best 2.50 I've spent in a while. The whole "Cybermancy" setting is awesome, there are lots of complicated stats and ability menus, and cool weapons. Though I only played for a little bit.
This. You can unlock, relock, whatever your achievements.
That is scary. I would not want to risk getting my account VAC banned...

Simple: Don't use it on a game that uses VAC. Most games don't use it.

Seriously lol. Just don't be dumb with it lol and you'll be fine. I used it for the Bunch of Heroes cheevo, which didn't register properly the first time.

It's like downloading a pirated version of a game that you bought retail: no harm in that, you bought the game. However, like piracy, there are definitely people who abuse the privilege.

Does anyone have the full-size version of the artwork from yesterday (the Payday one with Santa on the roof)? Not the version linked on the group page, the much larger version you get from clicking it on the Steam front page.

Damn I missed E.Y.E Divine Cybermancy. I was waiting on that and Hard Reset. Damn these stealth daily deals.
I'm going to say it now: NBA 2K12 needs to be $10 on Sunday for the start of the new season.
I guess you saw it's $9.99 at Amazon?

I'm hoping it'll be the same on Steam too because it doesn't activate on Steam and, given the option, that's where I like to keep my games.

Yup. I want it on Steam just to keep things consolidated. Of course, Steam could go one better and make it under $10 :D

Here ya go...

Last two copies are pending. Sorry Das_Regal and Z-Saber but both your inboxes were full.

Where is the steam group buy thread? I've been looking through the forums but I haven't been able to find it.

I think the wrong sale images loaded a few minutes ago for me. I saw Marty McFly...although I could be tired and going crazy. I hit refresh right away without realizing it, and then it was too late.

wouldn't happen to have the others, would you? (the first 2 days of the sale) i got the smaller versions but i'd love to have the high-res!

edit: never mind, found the "medium" quality ones on the group page. good enough for me. thanks anyway!

I think I may finally get down on some Paradox strategy games this sale. Anyone have anything to say about them? I'm thinking I will start with Hearts of Iron 2, but Europa looks good too.

electricsleep, just got an e-mail about my inbox being full. I'll clean it up.

EDIT: Too late, but it's otay.

After you've spent several hours sorting all your games into categories again, go to \Steam\userdata\somenumber\7\remote\ and copy your sharedconfig.vdf file somewhere. When your categories inevitably get nuked again, turn off Steam Cloud, replace your sharedconfig.vdf file with your back up, turn Steam Cloud back on, and restart Steam. :D

At least that's what Steam support told me to do. I'll have to nuke my categories to confirm.

Well goodbye life.

To put it into perspective I bet Deus Ex HR in 4 days, 27 hours total. I did the DLC for Deus Ex in one day although that was 4 hours. Still downloading E.Y.E. so now I can't wait to try it because it is kinda Deus Ex like or so I take it.

I really like Pride of Nations. I own all of their games and you really can't go wrong, IMO.

Seems like prices are fluctuating on non-daily games. Flatout: Ultimate Carnage was, I think, $10. It's now $5. Darkstar One also went down to 75% off from 50%. I went ahead and grabbed the Patricians and Merchants bundle. For $2 (a quarter less than Darkstar One alone) they threw in two extra games.
I think I just crafted the best possible gift:
10% off any bitComposer game
Ugh and I thought my 50% off Penny Arcade Adventures (which I already own by the way and got on sale at 75% off) was bad.

Crafting is a total waste. Somehow I was under the impression you could pick a prize when you did it. My luck so far with this sale has been total crap so no more wasting perfectly good coal (aka raffle tickets) for me.

Just spent way too much time trying to get that Rise of Immortals achievement. I don't ever play MMOs so I was pretty noobish. Finally got it in the end.... aaaand promptly uninstalled that game. lol.

Funny. I played it once for about 25 minutes... and quit and uninstalled it.

Didn't get the achievement and found that it wasn't even worth my time to keep at it to do so.

Just not my style of game.
Im raging trying to get the toki tori achievement. I can't get the controls down.
I'm not even going to bother with Toki Tori this time. Bad memories from the doing the summer version. :whistle2:#

I'm surprised but none of these steam sales have really grabbed me. Oh well, I'm sure something will interest me before everything is over.

I haven't bought anything yet. I am sure others are loving the sale so I can't stay that it sucks. However, it has sucked for me. Nothing I want has been on the daily sales and most have rather trivial discounts right now. Granted, most of the games I want are newer releases. Still, they can't even discount Jade Empire FFS.

That is my one regret from the summer 2010 sale. It was $5 during that sale and I passed because my backlog was so big. It hasn't went on sale a single time since. NOT ONCE. So all of you that say "eh, I'll wait for a lower price..." just remember my experience with Jade Empire, ummkay? ;)

It hasn't went on sale since last June. Ridiculous.
I'm not even going to bother with Toki Tori this time. Bad memories from the doing the summer version. :whistle2:#
2 1/2 hours later, I'm the proud owner of a piece of virtual holiday coal.
I have never in my life heard someone call Half-Life a first person puzzler nor should it be called one. Story driven FPS? A deep single player FPS? A technologically advanced FPS? All that, yes, but the emphasis is NOT more on puzzles than shooting. The puzzles in Half-Life 2 aren't even hard. In Portal, the puzzles are able to stand on their own. In Half-Life 2, they're an intimate part of the brilliant set that makes Half-Life 2 but just a part.

Maybe I just don't remember the puzzles you're talking about, but I remember a lot of crate/cinderblock/barrel stacking, some switch-flipping, and that's about it. But honestly, none of that felt organic or necessary. It wasn't cerebral, it just killed the tension and pacing. I remember driving around the canals and having to stop to do a long sequence that amounted to flipping a switch and then continuing. That's not cerebral, that's just padding.

See, here is, I think, the problem. People consider Half-Life a good game for what revolutionary things it did, but that doesn't make it a great game overall. I know this is a hard point to properly articulate, but basically, removing nostalgia and the effects it had on the genre, is the core game itself actually fun, well-designed, etc.? I don't know that I'd say yes. If I'm bored to tears within a few levels and I can't follow what's going on because there are three or four total character models (but a few are supposed to be distinguishable, important people), I dunno. Coming from a fresh perspective, it just wasn't compelling. I don't doubt they were revolutionary, or did cool new things with the genre. But a lot of that stuff didn't make the core game any better, and I think that's why it hasn't, in my opinion, aged that well. HL2's physics tech blew my mind when I played it at the time it came out (I wanna say like '04/'05?). Now, I see past that wow and realize I hate the pacing, the story's bland but told well (the way it handles cutscenes is meh, though), and large patches of the game are completely unmemorable.

To better articulate why revolutionary != good, I'd point to Trespasser. Horrible gameplay, but it did things ages before Valve did it to greater success (physics simulation, FPS exploration/puzzle solving, semi-seamless level structure, no cutscenes, minimalist HUD, ragdoll, etc.)
All good points and well taken, from both of you. I believe the initial point that ... someone(?) made was that HL was somehow more "cerebral", and I only mean to agree with that statement, not defend HL's greatness, or not-greatness.

Regardless of whether the puzzles were any good or not, I do still maintain that compared to other games of their respective eras, the HL games were more measured, slower paced, and (particularly HL2) had some thinking and "a ha!" moments.

For example, when you had to figure out to put the floaty tanks in the underwater cage, to raise the cage and the boards on top of it to create a ramp that your speedboat could use to jump a wall. It might have taken me 2 minutes or 5, but at some point I went "hmmmm... a ha!" and felt clever for solving the puzzle. This sort of lateral thinking, new in a game like this, qualifies as the video game equivalent of "cerebral", to me.

The only other FPS game(s) I can think of from way-back-then that invited this level of puzzle-solving are the Warren Spector games Thief 1 and 2, Deus Ex, and possibly System Shock, although I didn't play System Shock. All of which have a habit of showing up in lists of games that were ahead of their time.

But man, both HL games had terrible endings, didn't they?

No effort-worthy achievements for me today; I am not interested in Rise of the Immortals.

So I fired up AYIM instead to get it's Chrstmas achievement. Figure this gets me ahead for a day in the future. It'll have to do.

Ditto look me 5 minutes to create an account, 5 minutes to play tutorial and about an hour to figure out what i was doing get 10 assists in the 3v3 mission. It's not really an mmo though it's like dota or lol. That got me all the gifts for today though. For that effort I got a 50% off worms mayhem.
