Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Certain games wont be included, I'm sure a lot of people are going to be angry once the coupons become active and the list of games that wont work is released
Valve has already pissed off a lot of people by doing the whole coupon promo thing in the first place. If they place restrictions on the coupons themselves, they'd be taken as a joke.

Any fellow US CAGer willing to help me get Bulletstorm?
Apparently its not available in my region (thanks for nothing EA).

PM me to discuss further details, Thanks.
How engaging is the story on Bastion? I'm tempted to bite. Has Bastion been in the Humble Bundle before?

Edit: It has. Which makes me feel bad for buying Bastion at $5 when I could have had those other games for $5-7.
No, it has NOT. There is no Humble Bundle that has Bastion

At $5, I would recommend Bulletstorm. It's balls-to-the-wall fun from start to finish. It's a very beautiful game, too. Especially when you're tearing people up with an explosive flail gun.

I'll probably pick up Bastion (wanted to trade my coal for it, but the trading thread is probably crawling with similar requests).

Bulletstorm also have GFWL, so if you want some Xbox achievements while you're at it, here ya go.
Picking up Anomaly Warzone and Beat Hazard(heard it's a great game while under the influence).
Would get Farcry1+2 if it were a bundle now with the 3rd one coming up but I've been playing too many FPS and probably won't getting around to it anytime soon.
Anomaly Warzone is cracking. I don't really care for Tower Defense games but this one is, for me, much more fun. Getting the holiday achievement for this one is actually mega-easy. I got it by the end of level 3 I think. I'd just reroute my squad to destroy most of the enemies in a level and take my time.

Beat Hazard always gets mixed reactions to it and I can understand why. On one hand it's a nicely polished twin stick shooter with crazy pyrotechnics and lots of action to be had. On the other hand the levels are dependent on the kind of music you're playing. Regarding the latter, you can play some songs that will amaze you with what levels spawn from them (or vice-versa), but I tend to like games with hand-crafted enemy patterns that have a kind of rhythm of their own. It's not fair to compare this to Japanese shooting games but that's what's been in my shooting game DNA since 1980 :) I've also gotten spoiled by the utterly fantastic melding of music and shooting found in the Space Invaders Extreme games on the DS (2 of them) and PSP (the first one). Brilliant games those.

Having said that above about Beat Hazard, it's still worth buying it for this decent price. I think it's worth at least that and is actually fun overall. You can also use internet radio for the music source, as required by the holiday achievement for the game. It also seems to be a popular game for these Steam sale achievements so maybe that's another reason to pick it up cheap for your library.
I know I saw it somewhere but where is the list of games that can be won from this contest again? Thanks
You can already see what games you can use your coupon on. If you click on the coupon then click on "View Applicable Games" you will get a list. My -25% Activision will work on MW3 after Jan 2, so I don't see why his -50% Bethesda won't work on Skyrim.
I just won Dota 2 Hardware Survey. Is that good?
I had the same question crafte 14 coal and got that as well as bunch of heroes
I just won Dota 2 Hardware Survey. Is that good?
It is. Post it in the Steam trading forums, you should be able to get around 20 to 30 dollars worth out of it.
It is. Post it in the Steam trading forums, you should be able to get around 20 to 30 dollars worth out of it.
So wait, is it essentially DOTA 2?

I'm really on the fence about Bulletstorm. I played a demo using keyboard and mouse and had a really hard time pulling off combos. Would you recommend this game be played with a controller? It certainly seems that's what the control scheme was meant to be. For what it's worth, I am fine using either control method depending on the game. Thanks in advance for any advice, folks!
I'm not sure it will be in a bundle either. It's backed/published/somethingwhatchamacallited by Warner Bros.
It's published by WB but development was completely self-funded as far as I know. XBLA requires a publisher, and while some small teams have created a publishing wing just for their games, WB stepped in to get it on the service and to help out with marketing. Their more limited relationship could allow it to show up in a bundle. Shank was published by EA on XBLA and Steam and is in the current HIB.

I wouldn't bet on it appearing in one, but I won't rule it out just because it's got a large publisher.

Figures I get it right after I drop $20 for Spesh Mehreen.

I wanted it for PC.
Yay, I was gonna buy DOTA 2 anyway.
If you are patient, you might get more than 20, 30 dollars. Some people said they traded it for Skyrim.

For all of the "summer sale was better" and "coupons suck!" (which they do), I don't recall being anywhere near as excited about DLC as I was about actually winning a game (Alien Breed 2 doesn't count!). Granted, it's a game I won't play but it's still a bloomin' full game!

The execution has been a bit sloppy in places, and I dearly hope that the summer sale repeats in a similar fashion. But I can't so I'm not enjoying looking fr something that isn't coal :D

Man, these indie bundles are really making me second guess what used to be instant buys. Anomaly, Bastion, Nuclear Dawn, and Rock of Ages should have been buys for me, but now I'm holding off on all of them except maybe Bastion.

Bulletstorm is very tempting, but I have such a large backlog I don't think I'll get around to playing it.
Edit: On another not the Champion's Online achievement took a long time, not sure if that one will be a daily soon but from character creation to completion took a good 2 hours but I was lucky enough to find 2 people to help me and gave me all their presents otherwise it would have taken a lot longer. If this ends up being a daily achievement I would suggest passing on it as it takes some time to complete.
I just spent most of the day doing this with no help from others. Definitely not worth it, unless I get something amazing.

Since the topic of DOTA2 has come up, I'll ask this again.

I also won DOTA 2. Unfortunately, I won it on my secondary account, so it says "Not Tradable". I moved it over to my main account, but it still say Not Tradable. Is there any way around this? I'd like to be able to trade this for some stuff.
No, it has NOT. There is no Humble Bundle that has Bastion
It seems like all of the indie games go into some kind of bundle these days, so what's the point of buying any unless you absolutely need to play it right away? Steam surely realizes this, so now they entice customers to buy games before they hit bundles by giving out prizes for achievements during these events.
The story is almost non-existent. You wander around collecting these jewel things to restore the Bastion. Rucks, the narrator, tells you about stuff that used to be in the place you're currently wandering through. Each area is filled with bad guys and nothing more because the entire world was destroyed. Its one of the most overrated things I've ever played. Even at five dollars, I can't recommend it.
That first statement is a big misrepresentation. Bastion is not an RPG with fetch quests and scripted NPCs, but the story is very significant and integral to the game. It's well worth the $5 if you've ever been a fan of the 8 and 16-bit school of two-button beat-em-slash/hack-em-ups, but with an updated visual style and soundtrack.

I knew there was something about seeing Shank in a bundle that tickled my brain; thanks for pointing this out. I have 180'd again on my inclusion expectations.

I believe you could buy something or redeem a code for a cheap game that you buy as a gift or a HIB to activate trading. HIBs currently only come with Steam keys if you pay over a certain amount because people were abusing this. Other changes may have happened as a result.

Hell to the yes. I should've mentioned it before, but I never tried it with keyboard and mouse. I plugged my 360 controller in and it felt so natural. Controls were tight and you could string combos together so well

Bulletstorm is a great purchase at $5.00. I played it on Xbox and really enjoyed it. It's not game of the year buts definitely one of the more fun games I played this year. Buy it, use a controller and love it.

Just quickly as I'm walking out the door. The in game micro transction store was discovered in the newest update to DOTA. The post that was quoted earlier is explaining the difference between the holiday gift and the prior beta invitations. The difference is 1 copy of the game and the latter was 3 copies of the game.

DOTA will be Free to Play like TF2.

Thanks for the reply.

That particular account has every Indie bundle that's been released since HB2. I've been in the habit of buying two copies of each bundle and activating them on both accounts. I also have Portal from when it was free. And to top it off, the other day I used that account to buy the Renegade Ops 4-pack so I could gift a copy of the game plus DLC to my main account. Despite all this, DOTA 2 remains untradable until Jan 24th.

Edit: I can still gift it to somebody, but using that option to trade would require a certain level of trust from whoever I'm trading with.

It's a fun adventure game series, not particularly difficult, but quite amusing.

I finally got the Spiral Knights achievement and got The Orange Box. Already have it but should be good to trade.

Anyway, I have 81 crowns left from Spiral Knights and have no intention of playing the game again, so first to send me a PM gets the crowns.

Good heavens. I'm actually supposed to offload Dota 2 at the Steam forums? These people are nuts.

No I don't want your damn Orange Box. Everyone has that!

Bastion might not because Warner Bros. Published it, but who knows. Nuclear Dawn is going to be in a Indie Royale bundle so unless you want the cheevo, wait for it.

Rock of Ages is made by the same people who did Zeno Clash and I haven't seen Zeno Clash in an indie bundle yet, but only time will tell.

You're gonna need some patience. A guy closed the deal with me, said he'd be back 2 hours later, then bailed out.

I could imagine they make it like League of Legends. Each match you win points to purchase new champions and runes (which are basically upgrades) or you can spend real money to get things faster.
Finally got one of those rare 50% off any Bethesda coupons - Skyrim for $30, here I come.
Can I ask how you got the coupon? I was thinking about trying to get it and wait but I caved and bought skyrim already. I'm just curious at what my chances were of actually getting the coupon. I haven't been able to get any of the achievements besides the "free" ones.
uh care to elaborate because I for some reason am clearly not finding it. Looking for the list of games that can be won from the achievements
I think he means any Steam game is eligible.

I see plenty of cheap games that have peaked my interest today. Rock of Ages (mainly for the achievement), Red Faction 1 + 2, Far Cry, and possibly Worms: Reloaded.

I'm just curious at what my chances were of actually getting the coupon. I haven't been able to get any of the achievements besides the "free" ones.
It's random - I've completed 40 objectives so far and received 3 games, 6 coupons and the rest coal. Though, from my understanding, the Bethesda coupon is one of the rarer ones; with the "golden" version of it being exceedingly rare. I believe the exact game I got it from was the Hard Reset achievement.
Man, these indie bundles are really making me second guess what used to be instant buys. Anomaly, Bastion, Nuclear Dawn, and Rock of Ages should have been buys for me, but now I'm holding off on all of them except maybe Bastion.
Anomaly is a game that has unusually high production values for an indie game. If you like the genre, it's a good buy.
Could you ask for Dead Rising 2 for me? I know it's unlikely as Capcom took a look at the massive amounts of money games in this sale make at 75% off and said "meh", but you seem to have some pull. It could still happen.
+1

I've really not been looking forward to trying these F2P games to get the achievements...Looks like i'll be renting about 16GB of my hard drive to these things.
Hell to the yes. I should've mentioned it before, but I never tried it with keyboard and mouse. I plugged my 360 controller in and it felt so natural. Controls were tight and you could string combos together so well
Thanks for the info! Welp, looks like I'm adding another FPS to the backlog ;) Actually, I really liked the demo a lot. I liked what the dev was doing because the combo implementation was actually refreshing.
I wish all the damn F2P games weren't so huge.
ya i've downloaded so much this month just from steam.
