Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
does any1 actually play cities in motion? how hard is the achievement for a new player. the game is really confusing.

So can anyone tell me if Cities in Motion is fun/worth it? Also, is it better just getting for the Awesome or Dejooban complete?

I wish there was a demo of Cities in Motion. It's too different of a game to drop any amount of money on it. I could try it and find it terribly boring. Maybe that's WHY there is no demo though.
I bought Cities in Motion when it was a daily deal several months ago. I was really excited about it and had been waiting for a good deal for a long time.

But in playing it, I could not have been more disappointed. IRL, I enjoy civil engineering topics like city planning and traffic strategies. And I love strategy games, so I thought this would be a good match. But I didn't like it at all - it's DULL AS DIRT. I hate the UI. And the tutorial took over an hour to play through, and was less pleasant than a root canal.

Here's my Steam "recommendation" (if you can call it that.) Khamous, you may have read this already:
I muscled my way through the tutorial, but couldn't really muster the interest to play the scenarios of Cities in Motion.

Having a interest in city planning and transportation issues, I thought I'd enjoy this more than I did. But I seem to have lost all interest in Sim-style games. This just felt like a fine mess of micromanagement. I quickly became annoyed with all the boxes I was asked to flip through to manage my transportation networks.

Having said that, I approve of the game's attractive presentation, and excellent use of sound to draw you into the game. But it's not my cup of tea.

Needless to say, I won't be firing this game up to try for the achievement. It's just not worth it.
Any one got a extra copy of humble bundle 4
I do, bought a whole bunch for christmas as gifts. I don't think I have the steam keys for them however as I paid less than a dollar for those.
There are a ton of wireless receiver knockoffs that may look legit. The official ones usually cost more.

They could've fixed that so easily so that it couldn't be exploited by making it so that your Steam account would have to exist for 30 days prior to the giftpile giveaway to be able to participate.
Shouldve Wouldve Couldve. The story of every human life!

Im just glad I won some games at alll!
Exactly, it's the Steam forum inflating it. You see threads of people saying they have over 200-300 pieces of coal, which I just don't believe. Then you have people with 80 saying they are buying coal, and because they have so much they are offering it at .50 a piece. It's ridiculous, and there is no way to tell. I just want the Binding of Issac...lol.
The real life equivalent would be the M1 and M2 measures of money. In real life, while you cannot see what individual people have in terms of cash and assets, you can see the total supply of money in the system. Perhaps a measure of total coal in circulation on Steam would be worthwhile if we want to play some kind of coal market game. Then we could measure coal inflation using the daily price of a basket of common Steam goods (a healthy mix of indie and mainstream titles perhaps).

Then we can decide to vote on coal market regulations. Perhaps we could outlaw the acquisition of coal using penny Humble Bundles and multiple accounts. Then we'd have a coal black market! Then we'd have to hire some coal police
Imagine if someone buys 20+ humble indie bundles at a penny each. It inflated the coal market where normal folks cant keep up.
This is what happens when the Steam Reserve Bank keeps generating coal! I told you we have to go back to the Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition standard.

If anyone has Cities in Motion and doesn't have the time to learn the game for the achievement right now:

Just Start a New Game > Campaign > Munich (easy) > Start

Once in the game, press the Fast-Fast Forward button and let it run for 10-15 min. You'll get the achievement without doing anything. No need to setup anything.
I sat and played Rusty Hearts for an achievement for like 45 minutes... 45 minutes of my life I will not get back. All I got was a stupid coupon for a game I can get 10x cheaper during a Steam sale.
Well at least you got to play it. I downloaded it, but when I played it the updater kept getting an error. I browsed forums trying to fix it to no avail. Finally, just deleted it. All that time wasted.
Basically people got themselves a ton of penny humble indie bundles and a million steam accounts and made it their job to win a ton of free games and coal.
Oh, so in a way it was like they were making alternate characrters in Diablo II/Torchlight and then compiling the easy achievement rewards into one single account? I wondered how that worked. Needless to say that's friggin' lame because that's just overtly gaming the system rather than being a smart-shoppin' CAG. Let's call them Lame-Ass Gamers (LAGs).

Okay, I'm off to get the Bastion achievement and essentially play the game for the first time now...

EDIT: Woah, this game is amazing. I for one think the technique of using the narrator as your real-time, well, narrator, for everything is so well done and really refreshing. The music is rad, too (and I'm using "rad" in a non-kitschy way here - I love it and I'm glad I bought the soundtrack version of Bastion).

I'm using an Xbox 360 controller for the game and it's really obvious this is the preferred control method. I don't know how I'd even do as well with a keyboard and mouse. Really smooth controls overall, and the dodging and targeting system is easy and responsive.

Dang, I wish I played this sooner...

Well Rusty Hearts is awesome so at least you have that going for you

On the other hand part of my Christmas eve was spent playing Crimecraft...

Yeah; they were making hundreds of alternate accounts, buying the HB for .01 to allow trading and then consolidating coal/gifts into their main account. The 1st day's achievements automatically give 2 rewards, and joining the steam group, recommendations, etc. give easy rewards.

However, HB has since required a minimum purchase of a $1 to receive Steam keys in order to address this issue.

...if there's money to be made, people will capitalize on it. I'm personally hoping for "Gabe Bucks" this summer.

The Steam gods must be smiling upon me because after crafting 14 pieces of coal yesterday and lamenting the absolutely awful coupons I received in this very thread, I wrote a simple recommendation for Skyrim and low and behold, a free copy of Two Worlds II showed up in my gift pile!

PS - Does anyone know if the Two Worlds II DLC has been a daily during the sale already?

Thoughts on two games I picked up that I thought might be interesting for the game:

Sequence - Waaaaay too much RPG in my puzzler/rhythm game. Shut up already and stop making me click to advance the really dull conversation. I wasn't crazy about having to worry about constructing and deconstructing stuff to use during the battles. It isn't fun and it gets in the way of the game. I played 42 minutes and about 12 of that was the actual game. For the sake of comparison... I love Puzzle Quest.

Once you get in and get going it's a really novel idea - 3 rhythm streams: offense/defense/mana. It works well enough but the button pressing seemed a bit imprecise to me. (I used an Xbox 360 controller). I might try it again to see if it's less wordy once you get through the tutorial but geez....

Solar 2 - Okay, I really dug this one. The game is not unlike Osmos, but it is much more compelling. It's relaxing but not boring thanks to a bit of offense and its open nature. There are a few alternate modes and challenges too so there's a bit to do outside of the main game. I'll definitely keep this one loaded up for a while.

Found a way to powerlevel in Dungeon Defenders so god damn I am gonna do that cheevo one way or another with my friends.

Just you tube how to do it but it requires a squire, and putting all points into tower strength so basically your towers one hit anything and the right placement.

I'm pretty sure it was during one of the early days along with the base game. It may show up again for that price if they do an encore day though.

Tried this with two of my friends today and failed miserably. That achievement is tough. If anyone is a higher level and wwants to help out a level 27 Mage get this, I'd be appreciative.

It's pretty sad how low some people are nowadays and they think it's an ok idea to do this. And the Humble Bundles are for charity too. That's just bad all around.

Damn, I'm still hitting 100 KB/s max download speeds. This has got to change, otherwise I'm not gonna be able to download all the games I want to get the achievements.

I strongly suspect that the reward algorithm deals out 99.44% coal and the rest a graduated scale of crap discounts, third-string games and enough decent prizes to give people the false hope that if they keep buying games to try for achievements, they may win something valuable. That some were able to rip off the Humble Bundle to mine mountains of coal just reinforces the bad feelings this promotion is generating. I don't think Steam considered how the Internet would game the promotion, probably because every time someone tried to bring it up in the meeting, Gabe Newell adjourned for lunch.

I've done 12 achievements and got 9 coal, 25% off coupons for Valve or Bethesda titles, and 50% off L.A. Noire, something I'm actually hoping to use when they have a sale next year. (Watch them NOT have a sale until March!) I've only got a couple games left that I haven't gotten the achievements on and they're so involved, like the Psychonauts one unless I use a save file, that I probably won't ever get them. There are a couple of Steam achievements coming up for turning on Steam Guard and linking your FaceSpace, but other than that, I'm pretty much done and waiting for the raffle.
Regarding Wireless receivers for 360 controllers - I got mine through ebay from Taiwan. Might be a rip-off but the feedback was good, so I bit. It came it totally legit packaging and has the hologram sticker. I suspect that it's not a ripoff, but instead a legit version that is intended for sale in Asia, but distributors there can make a profit selling them back into the USA, even with shipping factored in. I spent $12 for it, including shipping, and had it in 8 days.

If you buy one, from Taiwan or anywhere, make sure you go to the Microsoft website and download and install the latest driver. It wouldn't work for me with the native driver that Windows 7 installed. You can get that driver here. Once I got the correct driver from the Microsoft website, everything was smooth sailing.
Glad you mentioned these adapters. In the interest of other CAGers out there who are thinking of using an Xbox 360 wireless controller on their PC for several of these games, I present the info below.

I bought mine via a seller on eBay named "showgoodgoods" earlier this year. It's obviously not an official one but it works great! Admittedly, getting it installed was a real pain due to the drivers but that was the same with the official one I used to own, too. In my case, I need to plug in the adapter into the same USB port I initially installed it in, so keep that in mind (could be different for others). The driver disk they included with the adapter would not work for me but again, that could be different for others.

Here are a couple of links to some really helpful info which helped me to get it installed and working perfectly now:

I agree that Gabe Newell is fat, but people ripping off the Humble Bundle doesn't bother me. It still amazes me that people still complain that when a developer/organization says, "Pay what you want!" people end up paying what they want, including one penny. Such promotions make a mockery of markets and prices. The simple solution is to simply charge a minimum price. $5 for the basic lineup of games and $10 for the bonus games is simple enough.

They got what was coming to them. Perhaps the lesson can be expanded to the real world. A lot of problems can be minimized by charging the right price.
Tried this with two of my friends today and failed miserably. That achievement is tough. If anyone is a higher level and wwants to help out a level 27 Mage get this, I'd be appreciative.
I've got three of the four classes at level 70 (last one is 68, I think?) so collar me later on and I'll run you through it.

Same goes for anybody who needs it.

Steam ID - Flowette
They could've fixed that so easily so that it couldn't be exploited by making it so that your Steam account would have to exist for 30 days prior to the giftpile giveaway to be able to participate.
That would've also alienated many new and potential Steam users, so I can see why they didn't.
Thoughts on two games I picked up that I thought might be interesting for the game:

Sequence - Waaaaay too much RPG in my puzzler/rhythm game. Shut up already and stop making me click to advance the really dull conversation.
You can hit enter to skip the dialogue so you don't have to keep clicking (unless you're using a controller lol).

Steamgifts is great! I can assure you there is nothing wrong with it, although every once in a while someone makes a fake giveaway. Basically every member on the site gets points every time someone posts a giveaway (I think it's 5% of the games value). You then use these points to enter giveaways based on the msrp value of the game (so sale prices are not factored in). Then if you are chosen to win the drawing, the person who put up the game gifts it to you. Many people go hundreds of entries without winning anything, but it is always worth a shot and I can assure you it works. I won my first game after about 300 hundred entries and it showed up as a gift in my steam account the next day. :)
Hope that helps therapy
What's this www.steamgifts.com website? It makes you login with your steam name and password. Looks fishy to me as I've never heard of the site. It's hella slow as well.
It's legit. I know a few people that have won things. I myself have yet to

That's informative, thanks. So if I get this straight, you need to give some stuff away before you can enter other people's giveaways yourself? Because I don't have any stuff to give away...

Personally, I'm finding the ironic, hipster dialog in Sequence amusing. It sends the message that "we aren't taking this too seriously, neither should you." It is also refreshing to have something different than generic fantasy theme #5345. We'll see if I get annoyed as the game goes on. As someone else said, if you don't like it, it is easily skippable.

That being said, I kinda suck at rhythm games. I don't know how far I'll get until I give up.
Damn, I'm still hitting 100 KB/s max download speeds. This has got to change, otherwise I'm not gonna be able to download all the games I want to get the achievements.
Change you location to somewhere on the other side of the globe where it would be late at night and no one is downloading. When I get slow download speeds, I will change to someplace like Malaysia and get up to 1MB/sec speeds.

Therapy- Nope! You could enter a million giveaways without ever actually having to put something on the site. Many people wait until they have won something and then buy something to put up as a good karma thing. The only restrictions are that you cannot post games from the various indie bundles, however, bundle keys may be entered after the bundle has ended.
I'm showing 37 minutes of playtime, but I could've done it faster if I'd remapped my keys immediately to WASD with the arrows for the guns and done higher difficulty to get more gold so I could buy the Charge ship. If I'd "cheated", I could've saved a half-hour; I'm sure that's what's driving save file usage. Considering the coal I got for my work, I sorta wish I'd used the save file and gotten it over with.
That logic only makes sense if you feel you are entitled to completing each achievement simply because you use Steam and have the game.
Was 10 on Amazon earlier in the week, still 15 now I think?
Yes. Gamersgate more friendly to non-US CAGs though :)

It was $7.50 on Gamersgate a few days ago, but if you're a non-US CAG, I recommend grabbing one of the AMD gift Steam coupon codes from eBay instead - I got mine about two weeks ago for about US$7.
I'll do the trade if you still need it. (4 coal for Isaac) PM me if interested.

I entirely agree with this. It wouldn't surprise me if based on the raping of the latest bundle they enforce minimums in the future.

After soooooooo many coupons and coal I finally won another game, STORM: Frontline Nation. Has anyone heard things about it? It doesn't look that bad and seems to be a type of game I might like, but I would like to know more before unpacking it.
Two questions, anyone know why Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2 is not on Steam? And can anyone who owns Republic Commando tell me what the max display resolution is?
Not sure why Old Republic 2 never made it to steam but it isn't downloadable anywhere.

I'm not sure about max res but I play it at 1080p. I don't remember ifi had to edit the ini to do that or not. I doubt it though as the xbox 1 did run games in hd as well.

It just shows that people are dirtbags

I have no problem with people paying a penny if they literally have no money to spend, I don't mind at all what people pay for games they'll play themselves.

When it comes to buying extra copies they'll never play and turn a profit on that's where the problem comes in and those people are lowlifes and there's always hope those people will have horrible things happen in their lives like loved ones getting untreatable cancer and have to watch them wither away.

There's always hope lol
Does anyone have a recommendation for any of the Star Wars games?

Keep in mind I haven't played a Star Wars game since the N64.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic - hands on. I think Steam and/or graphics card drivers have fixed the issues it had with running on Windows 7 because last I checked it ran great on my Windows 7 64-bit. However, there still may be cases of it not working on Win7 64bit. Wanted to let you know.

'They got what was coming to them'? C'mon. There are people that deserve what comes to them at times. I wouldn't say the Humble Bundle, by organizing indie games in a pay what you want model, is one of them. You are inferring they have done us all a great injustice and are receiving their comeuppance. What awful people. We certainly can use this swift retribution to them as a life long lesson on how to solve all of our world problems.
Found a way to powerlevel in Dungeon Defenders so god damn I am gonna do that cheevo one way or another with my friends.

Just you tube how to do it but it requires a squire, and putting all points into tower strength so basically your towers one hit anything and the right placement.
Any links? I played through the tutorial/first level only and the achievement map kicked my butt.

I've had no problems running KOTOR on my computer.
