Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Ho ho ho.
Just crafted too and actually got a game this time. Hydrophobia: Prophecy... anyone want to trade? Got a bunch of coupons too. :p

All that aside, even if it is $5, I can't round down for a game. "Oh we'll he tried. It's a side project." Horse patootie. You release a game. It has to be judged as it is against other games out there. Bloody Good Time didn't get a pass when it retailed at $5. There are loads of better $5 games out there.

Just made some guy's day in a trade. Traded DOTA2 for a Sherlock Holmes gift collection. Glad to see the guy added DOTA to his profile and not try to trade it for more expensive stuff.

More on topic, today is awful for sales. The indie games have already been in bundles or seem like great bundle-bait. LOTR needs to be at least 50% off, same with Dungeon Siege 3.

Anyone have any opinions on Mafia 1 or 2?

I agree at this point it has been marketed as a complete game. However, I think the developers original intention was more of a proof of concept/interesting idea. I am not excusing it but other then giving it away, there really isn't a venue to release what he was trying to do other than how he did it, making it a cheap downloadable game. Yes there are better experiences for the price on steam but most of them didn't start at $5
Anyone have any thoughts on serious sam double D before it goes off sale?
It's exactly as it looks. Did not impress me and I got it for a song at indie gala but did not repulse me. Could see myself playing it as a free flash game.

Strangely enough, I traded Capsized for Hydrophobia earlier in the sale. Otherwise, I would have traded with you.

As the sale drags on, I hate my coal and coupons less than less. I'm going to see what people will offer me for the whole inventory.

Bought Xotic. I did not know Xotic was a shooter until I checked out the page. I am a sucker for fast paced kill a ton of shit shooters.

Also I won Hunted: The Demon's Forge from crafting. Any opinions on the game? Should I keep it or get rid of it because I am debating.

Not a fan of the indie habit of releasing "cool concepts" rather than fleshed out games. The reason big developers don't make those games is the same reason indie devs don't really finish them. The gulf between conceptual demo and full game is not small, and the difference there is felt by the players as much as the developers

Was not impressed by Xotic demo but maybe you'll like it

Hunted is a game of great ideas and crummy execution. I liked it but it was a chore to get through. Could not keep my coop buddy playing it so that's a strike against.
How the total war series? I don't know when I would get around to playing them and may be around $5 in a 2012 sale I'm assuming.
I haven't got Shogun 2, yet, but the Total War Series is excellent. I will take breaks from whatever else I'm doing to skirmish or work on an ongoing campaign... altogether the best money I've spent in gaming, I think. ROME is still my favorite, Napoleon would have been if the console cheats weren't disabled.

Man, am I the only one underwhelmed by this sale? I'm sure it's because I have so much of I would otherwise want, but there are a number of things on my wishlist I put off from the Summer Sale due to a lack of money that I at least expected to be as cheap as they were then, but aren't. Nothing two days in a row, and a lack of titles I'm probably going to pick up at the end is disappointing.

Did pick up space pirates and zombies after all.

Have enjoyed the binding of isaac but not sure I'd recommend it, not a fan of setting and whatnot. Anything with somewhat similar gameplay? other than old zelda stuff.

Played and enjoyed the first shogun total war years ago But I think I'll pass on it for now laptops busted at the moment and that only meets the minimum req's for cpu.

quake might be interesting, but don't need more fps I'm never going to playing.
Hello starwars, half life and bioshock games in backlog.
How does one get teh facebook link achievement?
Just go to the Great Gift Pile in Steam (upper-right above the daily specials), then you'll see a link that says "Click here" in the Steam achievement listing. Takes a couple of seconds to do.

Here's what my inventory is looking like at this point in time. Just got From Dust, any thoughts?

ug4Pp.png

The DOTA2 and From Dust gifts came from one of my secondary Steam accounts, so they aren't tradeable for a while. It's completely BS because I've had those accounts since when Steam first came out with CS 1.6 and HL2. I don't understand why they got flagged.

Oh and just a quick heads up. Do Not buy Binding of Issac just for the achievement. I really like Binding of Issac as a game but to find Krampus, you have to be one lucky motherfucker.

I've been doing it, and it sends me to a invites page.

I was so excited today because I finally got 7 coal together :)

Crafted it and got... a coupon for 50% OFF Lost Horizon

Has anyone questioned these coupons? Think about it for a sec:

From 12/19 through 1/1, Lost Horizon is 50% off ($9.99 instead of $19.99).

I can use my coupon on 1/2 for 50% off, but wait a minute, won't it be $19.99 again on 1/2? So I can use my coupon and get the game for... $9.99, the same price it is now

My 25% OFF Valve and 50% OFF Valve might be helpful if a Valve game is on sale between 1/2 and 3/1 (and was released before 1/2/2012). Of course there's no point in buying it if it was cheaper during the holiday sale...

Just my $0.02
I am one of the ones who thought BoI looked terrible from the videos but picked up the humble bundle which had it. Lets just say after 100 hours and achieving Golden God it was a pleasant surprise. Even with my huge backlog I could not stop playing it. It is very addictive, but hugely random.

That being said this achievement is probably one of the hardest things I have had to do in the game. Random as the game is this is ridiculous. I have been playing on and off since the sale started and haven't even seen Krumpus.

My worry is people will buy this game for the achievement, rage hard on it and never try it again. not only that the boss is tough from what I have seen and for new players it is going to take you a while to adjust to the game, controls enemies etc. Really a terrible achievement. I would definitely not recommend not picking up the game for the achievement, only pick it up if you have a mild curiosity about it and want to actually play it.

I think it's either a love it or hate it type game but I was really surprised by it.
I put 100+ hours into Binding of Isaac too. Was def one of my fave indies of the year. I enjoyed beating Mom 10x to unlock satan then doing all the no damage achievements, and beating the game with every character. :) The being said I've beaten the game multiple times since they added the xmas achievement with many devil rooms along the way and have never seen Krampus. :( So if you're getting this for the achievement you'll probably be disappointed.

And that is precisely the reason why all coupons (except for Skyrim related ones) are useless.
And that is precisely the reason why all coupons (except for Skyrim related ones) are useless.
That is unless the game goes on sale during the duration the coupon is available. If you look up the FAQ about coupons it states they can be used on discounted game unless stated otherwise. So unless every publisher is going to be a douche and state it for the next month on every daily, weekly, or weekend deal then some should stack. And by stack I mean discount the discounted price (not make something completely free).

I liked the From Dust demo I played on 360. It's a time-based puzzle game where you play as a tribal spirit of land. You have to help your tribe populate the land and reach a shrine in each level so they can pray for protection from a giant flood. The basics of the game have you moving around, absorbing sand, and placing it along streams and rivers to build bridges for your people to cross into the next area. It can get difficult because the sand will wash away, so you have to be fast. The levels can range from small and simple to large and tricky. I only got to play up until the second level, but I thought it was pretty cool. Not sure how PC controls are, but 360 controls were fluid (ohoho).
And that is precisely the reason why all coupons (except for Skyrim related ones) are useless.
Golden coupons are also very useful since they can be used during the holiday sale, but I agree that most of the others are useless.

The only reason they can't be traded would be if you won/got those games on an account that hasn't existed for more or hasn't been in good standing for 30 days. An account has to be in good standing before it can trade. Unless trading a game makes it so it can't be traded again immediately, which if I'm not mistaken doesn't happen.

Or difficult like the Dungeon Defenders one. All it is going to do is get more sales and then make a lot of people hate you as a developer.

How is Mafia I?

I heard it's pretty good, unlike the II one, like a lot of people say... Never tried either of them.

Is there a chance that we might see a pack with the I and II together in a pack? Or will it be better wait or pick up the first one now?

for those of you trying to get the Binding of Isaac achievement. Use Cain. I guess there's something to the Luckfoot. First devil room i enter with him, and krampus pops.

Still random I have done 4 runs now as Cain and no pop. Getting really frustrating. 1 more run and I may have to use cheatengine. Really want to get this the legit way but this is ridiculous.
Did over 10 dungeon runs today, didn't see him at all. What moron picks a Xmas achievement that's so rare and random ...
Yeah this kinda annoys me because it's so random. I haven't been good enough to unlock Cain so I am stuck with Issac . I might try more later.

Well to be fair the Dungeon Defenders one has a clear message saying recommended level is 30+ but I do agree it should not be that insanely high. I can't wait for Super Meat Boy to get the holiday achievement. People will be complaining that it's so hard yet that's the point of SMB
I'm in after watching this, I'm sure I can get a buck and a quarters worth of fun out of it. Any other recommendations for today's sub $5 deals?

Holy crap what the hell did I just watch? lol Ok I'm in. Glad I have some extra cash this month, freakin' Steam apparently knows it.

Does anyone still play Quake? I used to LOVE Quake 3, but haven't played in ages. Looks like that Quake collection packs a lot of bang for the buck, *IF* I can still play with other people. Quake 4, however, can suck my balls. I got stuck in that game on my 360 and could NEVER figure out how to get out of a certain area. I hate when that happens.
I've been doing it, and it sends me to a invites page.
On that page click on Profile then I think Edit Profile in the field to the right. Scroll down and there should be an option to link your account. This is really weaird because I didn't have to go through all of this when I first did it. Good luck!
How is Mafia I?

I heard it's pretty good, unlike the II one, like a lot of people say... Never tried either of them.

Is there a chance that we might see a pack with the I and II together in a pack? Or will it be better wait or pick up the first one now?
I played Mafia for the first time just before the sequel was released. I enjoyed it quite a bit, the story holds up well and there's a variety to the missions I enjoyed. There's a lot of driving around but I felt it added to the whole atmosphere. The shooting mechanics are dated but I didn't have a problem with them. It's not an easy game though.
Quick question.... if I buy a game off steam, and there are mods for it (like new maps, models and so on), will they still work or does Steam check the software to make sure it's not altered.

It depends on how the mods interact with the game. Most games work fine but you'll want to check that specific's game forum to be sure.
ITDEFX, Did you get the answer you were looking for? Genocidal has it right. It really depends on the game and the mod. There are many games that offer modding systems and patches that are specifically Steam-ready (Oblivion, Titan Quest, S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Complete). Steam welcomes these. But many mods would get you banned if they're actually cheats for games, like Aimbots or wall hacks.

Is there a game in particular that you're concerned about?

Also, although most of us can't help but help others, you will get a greater depth of support in the Steam Forums for the specific game you're interested in. Good luck.

There are 70s that have been having trouble with the Dungeon Defenders one though. Plus even to get to 30 is what 6 hours?
Man, am I the only one underwhelmed by this sale? I'm sure it's because I have so much of I would otherwise want, but there are a number of things on my wishlist I put off from the Summer Sale due to a lack of money that I at least expected to be as cheap as they were then, but aren't. Nothing two days in a row, and a lack of titles I'm probably going to pick up at the end is disappointing.
I'm not complaining about the sale. Or the promotion. Who could? But I do agree. I think it's a symptom of having a bigger and bigger library on Steam. There's been some good sales, but most of them are things I already have, or am not interested in. We've been going at these super-sales for, what, 3 years now? Like Santa Claus, the excitement and wonder is for the youngsters, not the sale veterans.

But a 75% off Civilization V DLC would make this then best sale EVAR in my eyes. Just a few days left for redemption. Are you listening Steam? 2K Games?
Everyone is always linking to those WTF is videos. I would normally watch it but I don't need anyone to give me 15 minutes on a $1.25 game. Some of them are much worse like 45 minutes. Am I the only one who has never watched one of these because of their length?

You'll be glad to hear the WTF is series are 'First impressions' then, and not reviews :)

I've watched a couple. Despite any good or provocative points these videos want to make I often get the sense that they like the sound of their own voice and/or are squeezing vitriol and bile out into a video as some kind of grab for attention. I know that's generalizing but I've heard the same rants after working in game stores in my youth.
I watch them but man do they annoy me. Couldn't he play the game for 30 minutes before firing up the recorder? I tear my hair out watching him figure out how to navigate the menus, get started, etc. It's maddening. And so much babble.
Has Shogun 2 been cheaper?
According to Steamprices.com , (thanks fellow CAGs for this site ;) ), looks like 7.49 is the cheapest it's been. I'm tempted (of course!)
