Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Oddly, it seems when I'm getting the really crappy download speeds, if I click "play", after it pops up the "Ready to play in..." window, my speeds suddenly jump back up. Works every time. Weird, but worth a shot if you're having the same troubles. :)
Huh, won Deus Ex GOTY and the Sega Genesis Classics collection from two of the objectives today.

Now I can't say this sale was a complete wash :p
Very cool wins in my opinion. The Genesis collection allows you to have a few save states per game so it's actually possible to beat the incredibly long Kid Chameleon :)

Assuming that this is the final day of new sales, this was a letdown. I held off on major titles because I know Amazon had them alot cheaper, even though I can't buy anything there because those @!(*#&'s still don't accept paypal and I don't want a creditcard.

Furthermore, considering that I've only scored coal and coupons, the event was a letdown as well.

Still I've somehow spent 40 euros on games and dlc. Mostly small or very cheap stuff though (like Metro2033) because I bought about 12.

I was going to buy LA Noire, then I noticed "3rd Party DRM: Gameshield" and also Rockstar Social Club is required.

Anyone have any info on Gameshield? Limited Activation? Internet Access? Rootkit? Information seems to be quite sparse.

I already had a ton of games on Steam before this sale even started, so I thought I wouldn't be too tempted by anything. Ended up spending about $30 on games. Hahahaaahaa, so much for holding out. At least $30 is better than the hundreds of dollars I spent on the last couple winter/summer sales.

Even though I didn't win very good prizes with the exception of Deus Ex GOTY, this sale still got me to play some of the games that had been sitting in my backlog for a while, so for that, I'm glad.
I'm strangely tempted to get LA Noire even though I just got the complete edition on PS3 for Christmas, and have yet to play it at all.
My Ad Vice (hehehe) - don't double up. I'd say it's worth playing for anyone, but I wouldn't play it twice.
My Ad Vice (hehehe) - don't double up. I'd say it's worth playing for anyone, but I wouldn't play it twice.
Yeah, I decided to exercise some restraint and just play it on the PS3 :p Thanks!

Since there is still a couple hours left, does anyone have an opinion if the Civilization V DLC is worth it? I bought the original game long time ago so don't want to buy GOTY. Is there specific DLC that is worthwhile more than others? Thanks in advance for any replies.

LA Noire is very tempting, but I'm not sure that I'll get a chance to play it until spring break, I have a 50% off coupon for it. Do you think it is smarter to wait and get it or just buy it now?
But why is everyone crafting their coal? Don't you need to have more coal in order to have more chances to win prizes?
If you don't win anything then you've wasted all your coal. At least if you craft it you get something.
I have never once played Counter Strike but have been interested, do people still play?
It's a valve game....so yup
I have never once played Counter Strike but have been interested, do people still play?
Probably the most successful pro-oriented game in history, along with Starcraft and Warcraft. YEAH, a lot of people play it, there's even a Non-Steam version that millions of people still use.

It has been a decent sale for me:

Pendulo adventure pack
Dungeons Of Dreadmor + DLC
Chantelise
Psychonauts
Defense Grid DLC - You Monster
Demolition, Inc
Rock Of Ages
Sequence
Puzzle Agent 2

So, 11 games and one DLC for $29. Plus winning two games, one of which I have turned into SpaceChem via trade.

Still considering LA Noire, but there is enough here to keep me busy for a while.

Sweet...so which one is better? CS or CS:Source?
If you don't win anything then you've wasted all your coal. At least if you craft it you get something.
I wouldn't call useless coupons "something". Personally, I'd rather have 7 chances to win something big, no matter how much of a long shot it is, then to craft them into what will in all probability be a pointless coupon.

To be honest, it is still better than past sales for the most part. Sure, last time you could get DLC for some games, but that really wasn't worth that much, particularly if you had to buy the games. At least you have the chance to get something. And I still would be saying that even if I didn't get two games.

As for the coupons, we'll see in the next three months if they are actually worthless or not. I have a feeling some of them will be worth something.

I think the odds, while still not great, are far better at winning a game you don't already have via crafting vs the infinitismally small chance of winning the raffle from 7 coal. I think the chances of winning the lottery are honestly better.

Also to be fair with all the people that probably used multiple accounts to rack up coal and such. Its a long shot of anyone who played fair to win.

I think we are mostly out of good stuff tho, since I got a 50% off valve coupon as my last craft. I guess I can hope for another deal on Portal 2 in the next few months. The remainder of my coal will be used for the contest entry.

I've also been very pleased with the Steam download speeds during the sale. Normally it gets tacked pretty hard but I've been consistently downloading at 1.6MB-2.1MB throughout the entire sale, no matter what time of day.
Is it worth picking up Magicka at this price? Looks sort of fun.
I would say yes but there is a demo so you might want to give it a try.
Is it worth picking up Magicka at this price? Looks sort of fun.
Absolutely.

Its also extra fun if you play it with a few beers and buddies.
Is it worth picking up Magicka at this price? Looks sort of fun.
It's pretty fun, but you need to play it with friends. It's very hard single player. Also I'd get the collection with all the DLC included. Saves you a few bucks.
I don't see the Bioshock 2 DLC (Minvera's Den) on Steam. Is it not available on PC?
Bioshock2 is a GFWL game, so the DLC is only available through it. Kind of a pain and it rarely ever goes on sale. I managed to get it for 400MS points ($5) a couple months ago.

Okay, I've been ready for this sale / event to be through for a few days now. I enjoyed the Summer ticket system, but all the coal made this one feel more like work and less fun than the previous 2 winter sales, imo.

But still, I check up on it each day, and spent a little money.

-I did 33 achievements, crafted 3 times for coupons, earned a few other coupons, all of which I traded away and don't remember what they are.
-I won Oblivion: GOTY which I traded for Dead Island.
-I crafted a Half-Life 2, which I'd love to trade away.
-Steam has reset my library categories at least 3 times

I've added:
-Bastion
-Bulletstorm
-Dead Island
-Defcon
-Defense Grid: Portal DLC
-Deus Ex: HR + Missing Link
-Frozen Synapse
-Gemini Rue
-Hacker Evolution: Untold
-Hacker Evolution: Duality
-inMomentum
-Psychonauts (must be the third format I've bought this in. Maybe I'll play it one day!)
-Red Faction
-Red Faction II
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Pripyat
-S.T.A.L.K.E.R: Clear Sky
-Saira
-Serious Sam 3
-Serious Sam: Random Encounter
-Serious Sam: Double D
-6 Sherlock Homes games
-Your Doodles Are Bugged!
-Zombie Driver 1 and 2

At a total cost of...$35.09 to steam + $15 to Amazon for the Deus Ex: HR and DLC (which yielded 2 $5 off-in-January coupons I don't really want)

Also gifted Hard Reset, Dead Space 2, Zombie Atom Smasher, Railworks, and Mass Effect, for another $20.96

I guess the trading worked out pretty well for me. Feels like I got off light this time around.

I got a 50% off L.A. Noire coupon on the first day of this dumb promotion and figured I'd hope for a sale in the next two month to stack it with, but unless they put it on sale for less than $25, it won't beat today's $12.50 deal. Coincidentally, my friend lent me his vanilla copy of it for the Xbox the other day and I was going to start playing it. What to do?

There seems to be a lot of negativity toward it - a lot of "it's a crappy console port" stuff beyond the usual whining when a title doesn't exclusively belong to the Glorious PC Gaming Master Race - but I wonder if these are folks with poor computers? I've got a Core i7-920 OC'ed to 3.6 GHz, 12 GB RAM, SLIed GTX 460 1GB + 8800GT (for PhysX) and I average mid-70s in BF3 with everything on full blast and AA turned off at 1920x1200. GTA IV runs OK for me.

That begs the question as to how Valve is going to do this on 1/2. We know that they'll count the coal you have in your inventory at that time. The question then becomes will you have an opportunity to craft after they take count, similar to how you could use your tickets in the summer sale and still get your entries.

Well it is Rockstar so it may not run the best. And just so you know you have a computer that is quite good and probably better than most, it is definitely far better than mine. So i probably wouldn't say whether or not you being capable of running a game is a good way to determine if a game is well optimized.

I am going to be interested to see if we can use our coupons on the 2nd on the dregs of the sale. If so, some of these coupons might be worth a little.

I was looking up Focus Home Interactive for the 10% coupon I have, and their complete pack is an outrageous deal at $49.99. That would include the Pendulo adventure games, the Sherlock Holmes adventure games, Game Of Thrones, Blood Bowl, Divinity II, plus a bunch of other games. Just the ones I list is 13 games.
