Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.
Trine 2 is not a seven year old (or 4 year old, in DMC4's case) game. That comparison makes no sense.

And just because they own the game does not somehow confer an understanding of anything. It's their right, yes, but that's not remotely related to what I was talking about. Their decisions about how they promote and discount are often bad, and owning the trademark does not excuse a thing.
Again, that's because you're spoiled with big Steam sales. It's okay to be a CAG, but to start criticizing a publisher for not doing "good" sales on their games?

When publishers come forward with data from Steam sales that says they grossed more profit at the sale price than at the regular price, and almost every publisher on Steam gets involved with deep discounts -- even EA -- yes, it seems fair to criticize a company whose PC offerings are late console ports.

Capcom and Activision are kind of in the same category where sales are concerned; namely that they don't do them well. For me, it's not so much a criticism as it is an observation.

I've been waiting for a $14 or less price on Dead Rising (on Steam), for example. For years. There's a sequel out for that game, so you'd assume the original might get a low deal if for no other reason than to hook a few more people into the series and maybe drive sales on the new game. But no. Without being privy to the sales data it's only an assumption, but I'm fairly sure they've saturated their sales potential at the $19+ pricepoint. Why not let it go down a few extra dollars and fish around for a new market?

Valve has documented well the effect of dropping the price of a game over time, concluding that a well-timed price reduction drives units at an enormous rate. Most other publishers follow suit. It's just puzzling (and a bit sad for those of us waiting eternally on a sale) that publishers like Capcom don't get that.

Glowfish doesn't get any hype, and I have never played it. FWIW, my friend (who is more of a casual gamer, Peggle, PvZ, etc. but also plays Civ5 and such) raves about it. I think she has sunk like 14 hours into it in the last couple of weeks.

Good enough for me. Will buy for the GF. Hope she likes it too!

It all depends if their title is still selling at that price. If they think sales are still good, they will keep the price up.
Also a small plug for anybody else who's an active poster here who hasn't entered into a contest I'm holding that ends tomorrow night: http://www.cheapassgamer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=312777
Seems that Gearbox is working on something new that I just found listed this morning on Steam. Hopefully it's good.

Thanks for the contest. I've been meaning to enter but forgot about it until today. Added the new gearbox game to my wishlist as well :)

On another note I was looking through some of the coupons my friends had yesterday and thought i had seen Glowfish as one of them and got excited when I saw the deal today. I looked again, apparently it is for "Lightfish." They should have laws against that :(

I won glowfish during the winter sale. I figured it would be something my gf would like....next thing i know it's an hour later and I'm still playing. I haven't touched it since then. I'm afraid someone will walk in on me playing.
You da man.

Pretty sure everything would be claimed by now. ;)
I still need to decide if I'm going to limit it to one item winnable or not. Then if not, decide whether or not that secondary wins are after everybody won their first items (unless there are a ton more entrants) or just random it with a max cap of two that can leave some people without prizes. I'll need to re-count the amount of prizes as the excel sheet I have it in doesn't count multiples.

Maybe in the future I'll try and orchestrate some kind of community dog pile give-a-way or something if I'm not too lazy. I'm definitely not doing something this large again by myself and I will definitely hate myself next weekend as I spend hours (likely) giving away shit.
Anyone know when their Season sale is? Looking to pick up Mirror's Edge :(
Next one will be the summer sale around July 4th. In the meantime, you can keep your eyes open here and see if it goes on sale in the meantime.
That new game Kingdoms of Amalur is being hyped as an RPG with good combat, if you weren't aware.
I mentioned this previous but it didn't get much attention probably due to the price but Kingdoms of Amalur can be had for $45.86 through GamersGate if you sign up for IGN prime (currently free 7 day trial). You also get ~$2.50 in bluecoins to spend on your next purchase. I haven't tried this but if you do a refer-a-friend purchase type promo, you can get up to another ~10% back in bluecoins (this depends on what experience level you are). PM me if you have any questions. I want this game because of R.A. Salvatore, loved his Drow books back in the day.

NOTE: Sorry I should have mentioned this is not a Steamworks title so will not activate on Steam, it should activate on Origin though. Also with IGN Prime, you get King Arthur and Hamilton's Great Adventure for free which do activate on Steam (this promo has been running for awhile so I am guessing it may end tomorrow).

Is it a Steam key? I would be interested in this if so. I can even use your referral link, if you want. Send me a PM.

And that's the law of retail, of course. But neither of us really has visibility into their sales data, so it's difficult to understand their motivation. It does fly in the face of data provided by Valve, however.

But look, it's a fact that you reach diminishing returns on a product once you've saturated the market for that product at X price, and that lowering the price does entice an entirely new group of people that would not consider it prior to the reduction. Timing is everything. My only (selfish) question is.... aren't they waiting a bit long to tap into a new market at a new price? At some point I lose interest because the product is outdated.

I've been wanting to get Dead Rising 2 and RE5 on Steam for a while now. But I have more than 400 games in my Steam account, and as much as I'd like to play Capcom's stuff I'm not paying $15+ on sale when I have so many other games to occupy my time. Capcom can charge whatever they like for their stuff, they just won't be getting any of my money until that price hits my magic "throw it on the backlog" price.

5 dollars or less is mine
Quick reminder about Kingdom of Amalur, it's £29.99 for UK folk. That's about $45 or thereabouts I think.
I think that's my price point, if someone from the UK would be willing to help me.

I've been looking for a good deal on Amalur, will check out gamersgate. I kinda want to wait for some reviews before committing, would rather get the Steam version but not if I can save $10-15 getting it somewhere else even if that's Origin. Just realized that Gamefly gave me 30% off my first purchase if I check out their client. Wonder if I can apply that to a pre-order and get the game for $42. Sorry for the non-steam talk, I'll shut up about it.

That looks pretty damn fun. I'm not in the buying mood (and won't be for a while), but I'll be giving the demo a try and putting it on my wishlist.

30 GBP becomes $48 in REAL AMERICAN money, which isn't a BAD discount if you want Steam Amalur enough to pay a premium. I might even be up for that... hrm...

It'd be nice if they could have some sort of mini season sales between now and July 4th. Something like the Halloween or Thanksgiving ones which were more than a weekend deal but not as extensive as summer or winter sales.

That's exactly what I did thanks to some help from Flowette. I figure Amalur is the kind of game I'm willing to take a risk on. Nice to see some original IP.

An open world action RPG with good dodge-heavy combat and real skill involved along with the growth has been my dream game for a while now. I think I'll hit up the trade forum and see if any Eurobros are still up for the idea

Looks like a great candidate for the eventual 75% off daily deal. I will get it when it hits a sale.

I kinda wish I could get a Steam version of Amalur but I will take my Amazon download. I am excited for Amalur, it might not be the prettiest game but the combat really has me interested. I liked the demo because while it was a RPG, it still was unique enough with the depth of the combat system to make me want to play it.
There's a new Humble Indie Bundle. It's Android focused but the games are also on Steam. You must pay at least $1 to get Steam keys.

EDGE, Anomaly: Warzone Earth, and Osmos. You also get World of Goo if you beat the average.

Very cool concept. Its too bad I own them all but edge. I will wait to decide.

Paid over a dollar to get Anomaly and Edge on steam, was interested in both. Already have Osmos and World of Goo from other bundles. Probably will never play them on my phone anyways.

There is another thread that posted that Fortune Summoners is up. It is from the same people who brought over Recettear and Chantelise. 25% off right now.

I will say one thing for the mobile versions of Osmos and World of Goo, they have touch specific controls and the games really do lend themselves well to being played that way. I actually like playing them with the touch controls better than the mouse ones and I feel like it enhances the game a bit to have that more tactile feel.

I also have to give the developers credit for truly designing the controls around the mobile platform and not taking some lazy shovelware route that many much larger developers do where they just through a virtual stick up and call it good.
