Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

That's not how the coupons work, unless by "it" you meant "one of the coupons."

A single coupon would take 25% off the current price, and they don't combine.

Lol what you think he was saying he had a 13 and 12 percent off one.

Why isn't Rage eligible for my 25% off Bethesda coupon? I noticed this before and it's still not on the list of 28 items it's eligible to be used on. The Rage page (heh) lists this:

Title: RAGE
Genre:
Action
Developer:
id Software
Publisher:
Bethesda Softworks

The coupon says: 25% off any one title on Steam listed with Bethesda as the publisher.

I could use it on top of the $40 Skyrim sale, but I don't want that game. (Never finished Oblivion.)

Dunno if it's a mistake or not, but ID coupons are the one that work on RAGE, not Bethesda coupons.
No, he was suggesting that having two 25% off coupons for a game on sale for 50% off would make it free.
That's how you read it. I read it as he was offering a free coupon to anyone who wanted it.

Lol after reading what he wrote again I guess that's what he meant maybe. I skimmed over it and took it as he had two 25% off coupons that he was willing to give for free. But I think you're right.

I really think if anyone thought they could get the game for free they would try to buy it themselves as a game or gift before offering it up to the general public. Though I do know some people have misconceptions about how coupons stack on top of discounts.

No, you're right, it should work with the Bethesda coupon. I meant a mistake on steam's part.

Whose chain can I yank to ask about this? Too bad Steam doesn't have a bloke like T-Money from Amazon living here to interface with the legions of customers CAG provides.

Good luck, Steam support is only available through the e-mail/forms they provide on their site. To top it off, they'll usually take a few business days to respond to any ticket. I wouldn't count on them refunding the difference if you buy it now and request it either in return for them removing the ticket.

I've submitted an inquiry thru Steam Support. If they get back to me, fine; otherwise, whatever. I have a game backlog that's visible from Newt Gingrich's Moon base and Mass Effect 3 impending, so if I have to wait for a straight up RAGE sale next Christmas when it's $5, I'm not going to be crying about this snafu.
Rage is down to $14.99 for today

I actually have a 33% off rage coupon sitting in my inventory (making RAGE probably $10 and change).

If anyone actually wants the coupon to actually purchase the game for themselves, add me on steam (http://steamcommunity.com/id/aajetta) and I'll send it to you.

I already own the game because of the Bethesda insider program, so have no use for this.

Not seeing you online to actually trade you the coupon. No idea if I can send it otherwise but yes, I received and accepted the FR.

I'm at work on the web now. I think I'll have to wait until I get home on the actual client to do the trade. I'll be home by 6:30 pm EST if you can wait until then. If not, I'll understand.

Nah.. not like it's going to grow legs and walk out of my inventory. I'll probably be on Amalur anyways so shouldn't be too hard to catch me.

RAGE is pretty good. Note that the Anarchy Edition stuff is just a couple of extra items. A useless extra car, a useless buff to fist damage, an unimpressive double barreled shotgun, and the option to pick a suit that has all three permanent bonuses rather than opt between the three on offer.

EDIT: Skyrim coupon claimedhttp://steamcommunity.com/id/BertieWooster/
The Kickstart project for the Double Fine Adventure is about to hit one million dollars. This is rather amazing.
Yay it did. Maybe other companies and publishers will notice how being friendly to your fans and making it more about them than money can actually turn out to be extremely successful.

Of course I would like to point out that while yes, it did get a million dollars, 26,000 just bought the game essentially. So when it becomes released their sales figures will be slightly skewed because 26,000 people bought the game a long time before.

Can't they just count those as "pre-orders"? ;)

I was just correcting your misconception. Follow along or move on, buddy.
Can't they just count those as "pre-orders"? ;)
Do pre-orders at gamestop help the developers and publishers with the cost of making said game? Money from game sales are essentially used for the future projects. If all of this money goes into this one game then they have to count on everyone that didn't want the game as much as these people to help them pay for future projects.

So if everyone that wants the game donates now and then when it is released and nobody buys it (because everyone already has it) it could spell disaster for Double Fine. now with that said I highly doubt they will put all of this money into this one game. I would imagine they will make a little series or something.

According to the terms of Kickstarter they HAVE to use the money for the project/purpose expressed. They can add to it I believe, so if they made a series of games then anyone who funded through kickstarter would have to be given the entire series.

I don't see how this spells any disaster for Double Fine in any way. Even if they don't sell one single copy retail, the process means they should have the money needed through funding so they don't have to worry about sales or anything like that.
I was just correcting your misconception. Follow along or move on, buddy.
Right. By telling me the same thing I already said, that he hopefully meant the coupon was free. I could repeat the part about actually adding something to the discussion rather than arguing for arguing's sake, but it's clear that you haven't a grasp on the conversation. If you're not done telling people what you think they thought an entirely different person meant in a day-old post (!!), or focusing on one interpretation and claiming against all evidence that it was the only one considered, then go start a new thread for it. Meanwhile, I'll continue clearing up possible misconceptions through helpful posts that actually have to do with Steam and Steam deals. (If that bothers you, feel free to PM me.)

I get the feeling that this event is going to generate a lot of buzz for this game even in outlets that don't generally discuss video games. This is going to be written about in business publications, and Double Fine as well as the game itself are going to be talked about by a lot of people long after the Kickstart window has lapsed. I don't doubt that there are going to be a lot of people who aren't the enthusiastic Double Fine fans ponying up the money now who come to hear about the game over time and consider a purchase, if not on its own merits, simply because it's been talked about so much. Even with the 28.4K prepurchases at the time of this post, I expect that there will be a lot of sales at release from people who've been swept up in the talk and hype afterward.

And that's not even assuming that the game turns out to be something great.

wow, I cant believe there was a 2 page discussion about what I meant when I offered two 25% off coupons. I figured it was pretty straight forward. If there are any 2 people who want a 25% off coupon for Stronghold 3, I can give it to them. The catch is, you also have to take any other coupon that I want to give you.

Seems about par for CAG.
bla bla bla.
wow... gave you two simple options and you still managed to blabber on for two paragraphs.

Me, I am moving on.

What the hell is all this fuckery about Double Fine and the Kickstarter? It sounds like some people think this is all a stunt or a scam or going to backfire. Huh? What?!?

Kickstarter is a throwback to the old days of patronage where artists would be funded by wealthy patrons who would basically pay them to create art for them. By combining it with crowdsourcing principles, it allows people to make express support for worthy things before they're even in existence. Instead of making something and wondering if people will want it, creators can gauge interest before they embark on the project. If no one wants it enough to pay for it up front, then what odds of success would there be later?

A musician I know used Kickstarter to get money to put out his solo album that he'd recorded, but needed funds to manufacture and promote. He's in a band with a good following and he made a cute video explaining his project and he got more than the $3000 he sought.

Double Fine isn't some shady outfit. It's Tim Schafer's outfit with Psychonauts and Brutal Legend on the resume. He made Grim Fandango, Day of the Tentacle, and Full Throttle for LucasArts. Tim asking for patrons would be like Kevin Smith offering people a chance to fund a movie in exchange for a DVD after the theatrical run.

As this Venture Beat article about them getting $1 million in 24 hours points out: "But in the era of Angry Birds, publishers weren’t willing to take a risk on a new project from the duo. As Schafer put it in the Kickstarter video, publishers would laugh in his face if he asked for the fund to do an old-school adventure game. But legions of fans are always asking for it, and offering to pay. So they turned to Kickstarter, hoping to raise $400,000 and offer fans a chance to watch the creative process, pitch in ideas, and even star as characters in the game."

Schafer gave the fans an opportunity to put their money where their mouths were. Literally. "You want an old-school point-and-click adventure game? Then pre-pay for it and you can watch us make it happen and know where your money went." With all the extra cash in the bank, they'll be able to make it even better than planned. How can people be cynical about that?

The model for creating and distributing entertainment is changing. Louis CK put up $170,000 of his own money to produce the Live From the Beacon Theater and made over $1 million in a couple of weeks by selling DRM-free downloads for $5 from his web site. If he'd done a traditional deal with someone like HBO, he would've been paid about $200,000 and DVDs would've been sold for $20 with him getting little from that. He's given most of the profits to charities and his staff, but like Double Fine has done, he went with an approach that involves his fans and gives them a sense of involvement.

If this turns out well, imagine how fast he'd raise the budget to make Psychonauts 2!
wow... gave you two simple options and you still managed to blabber on for two paragraphs.

Me, I am moving on.
Can we just chill out, This is the second conversation that was unneeded in this thread in the past few days. Fox you have been in both if you were moving on no need to announce it.

I can't control how people take what I say or feel the need to respond to me. I made what I felt was a pretty innocent comment just like 100s of others have done in this thread and someone took offense to it for some reason and responded sarcastically to me. I responded. I told him I am moving on because it's not that big a deal for me. I am chill and always have been. People need to stop getting on edge about opinions on a public forum.

I agree with Dragonsbane; This is becoming quite the sad display.

By the way, I am one of the few that doesn't have Plants vs. Zombies, and $2 is an excellent price. Is the game truly as enjoyable as it's made out to be?
According to the terms of Kickstarter they HAVE to use the money for the project/purpose expressed. They can add to it I believe, so if they made a series of games then anyone who funded through kickstarter would have to be given the entire series.

I don't see how this spells any disaster for Double Fine in any way. Even if they don't sell one single copy retail, the process means they should have the money needed through funding so they don't have to worry about sales or anything like that.
So you're saying that having the money to fund the game and then having zero dollars coming in after would be fine? They would be fine until the game was released. Now, that is not all going to happen, but I am just saying that there were essentially 26,000 sales that are helping fund this current game, but not into their future after the game is released. Again they will have sales after the release. It is nigh impossible for every single person to donate that would have eventually bought it. It is just that if it was to happen it would possibly be horrible for Double Fine.

I really think the kickstarter thing is a great idea and worked out extremely well. I hope more companies get ideas from it considering most can't come up with their own, might as well follow a good one.

Anyway, I actually came back into this thread tonight to say this. Stronghold 3 is also part of the weekened deal at 50% off or $24.99.

That's definitely true. And I have actually seen it happen to some of the short sighted music acts that did kickstarter. They literally raised enough money to produce/press the CD, but didn't do anything to ensure any sales afterwards (in fact I think they limited the CD to just those who funded). So that particular act really made no headway in gaining new fans, making any actual money on the CD, etc.

I think if that happened here it would definitely be bad as well, because even if they get enough funding to cover the cost of making the game, they can only dedicate so much time to unprofitable side projects.
Pithy answer: YES.
Pithy works. Usually, I'd want more explanation, but I suppose the game doesn't need much elaborating.

I do enjoy tower defense games immensely, so I suppose this decision would be a no-brainer.

As far as the tower defense genre goes, Popcap really got it right with PvZ. If you like tower defense and don't have Plants vs. Zombies, you really do owe it to yourself to snag it for two bucks.

I don't enjoy tower defense games, and that didn't stop me from logging about 35+ hours in PvZ.

I hadn't played a tower defense game before PvZ and got hooked too. I played it all the way through on my phone and then bought it on steam too and need to go through it on the PC now. Definitely worth the 2 bucks.
Has anyone tried Shank 2 yet, or is it safe to assume that everyone here is waiting for a sale/bundle before acquiring it?
It does have a demo. It's pretty fun. Word is it's short. Basically, if you liked Shank, and would've or did pay 10 bucks for it, do it again.
Anyone played or have an opinion on Gotham City Impostors?
I hear it's not worth buying at all on PC due to GFWL and shitty matchmaking (which is a result of GFWL).

Even if it were a good game, GFWL would kill it and kill it quick, like Section 8 Prejudice.

I don't mind GFWL, but the matchmaking they put in games it the worst thing ever. Other than that I am fine with GFWL.

For example Red Faction Guerrilla. Wonderful game and the multiplayer was blast. The matchmaking made me want to throw the game out the window. Of course it is digital so that kept me from throwing my pc out of the window.
