Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V2! You can find the V1 thread (2010-July 2011) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Steam Games and DLC on Sale - Updated 2/12

Preorder Deals - Updated 2/12

Group Buys - Updated 07/23

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.
Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:
Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Ugh. I am resolving to buy deals when I see them from now on. I saw the jedi knight collection deal yesterday and I was lazy. Of course I missed it. This is the fourth time in a month I missed a daily deal I wanted.
Really? it was 66% off this morning...I figured it was unadvertised from yesterday.
Sounds like they're having issues. The news page lists it as the daily deal.

I think it was actually on sale all day yesterday, I though it was kinda weird that it was listed as a daily deal on its store page. Looks like they made a mistake and put it up yesterday. Not that many people are too excited to buy this game, especially at that price.

I know this is off topic, but this kind of bothers me. Currently the Double Fine kickstarter is nearly 1.6 million and I added up all the donations and only about 500 of the 44,020 backers didn't donate 15 or more dollars.

That is fantastic, but then I realized that apparently people are very generous when they can give money to help develop a game, but when it comes to buying a pack of games and giving to charity, people are bastards. The current Humble Bundle has sold nearly 140,000 bundles yet hasn't reached one million dollars. Seriously?

Who cares if they didn't donate $15. Every buck counts. The last HiB made like $2.1mil not all of that goes to charity I might add.

The problem is you're comparing apples and oranges. They're both fruit, but aren't really similar when you look at them closely. The Double Fine thing attracts a different audience:

Double Fine supporter: "I would LOVE to see another game by double fine! Take my money, please!"
Indie Bundle purchaser: "Eh, pay what you want and get around 5 games? Sure, I'll take one bundle for $2-- wait, pay $5 and get 3 more games? Hell yeah, I'm in for that!"

There are many reasons behind why the two are so different, but in my eyes it's the way they present themselves:

Double Fine: Support us to make another great game!
$15 - Support us and get the full game when it releases
$30 - Support us even more and get a documentary of the making of the game on top of the full game when it releases

Humble Bundle: Pay what you want and get 5 awesome games!
Before - $0.01+
Now - $1.00+

Judge me or not, when I see an indie bundle, the CAG in me tells me to pay the bare minimum to get more, but I can't really do that morally so I pay the average price always, because it makes me feel better and because it's just charity to me, I'd much rather just help out a cause that hits closer to home.

When I seen the Double Fine thing, my impression was, "this could be really cool to help out a game to be made and see the development of it, and also get the game when it comes out". Being a programmer myself, I looked at it as a benefit to me, so I went in for $30.

Regardless of what everyone else does and thinks, that's how I think/feel. If the Humble Bundle presented itself as getting the maximum bang out of your buck, or penny depending on who the person was. Look at the Little Big Bunch a while back, that was even worse. Someone seen the site and exploited the ability to get free games and selling/trading the ridiculous amount of copies that he got for profit/gain. The lower the price, the more sh***y people it'll attract, it's as simple as that. I'd have no problem paying $10 for 5 indie games, I do worse on any other given 5 games that I buy, but they need to present it as such. Regardless, I'm going to keep doing what I do, paying the average for Indie bundles and if something awesome like the Double Fine Kickstart comes up again, I'll support that.

On-topic:
The CoJ: TC metascore surprised me, but didn't at the same time. The mess that was CoJ: BiB, I got through with a grand total of approximately 100+ freezes in my playthrough, more realistically a freeze every 30 seconds, consistently. I loved it, but it was a buggy mess that I would have loved to avoid, but me being me, I had to get through it. =P

Bought CoJ: TC pre-order on GMG and still haven't played it. That metascore really scares me though. =/

While yes they are different and Double Fine is a known company that people like. Anyone remember who made Anomoly? Without looking it up? I don't. But they are still similar. Without support humble bundles won't happen much like without support the game from Double Fine probably wouldn't have happened.

Also you can donate $1 to Double Fine. People have the same options when it comes to spending money for either thing, but people are just more willing to give more money to Double Fine.

I just wanted to point out how people are abusing a system in which some money may go to charity (and if you think making a bunch of .01 cent accounts for a steam sale giveaway is not abuse then I'm not sure your a real person), but now for something else people want to give their money.

Yes, there is a difference, but I would say there are far more similarities between them. The real difference is just that cheap people don't get anything from Double Fine. To get something they can't be cheap.

On-topic

Honestly I have heard horrible things about The Cartel, but the screenshots and gameplay videos make it look even worse. I do not see any reason to own this game.

A interesting experiment would be for them to offer a Humble Bundle for a fixed price like five games for $10 or $15 and seeing how that goes. "Get $50 worth of games for $10 with no DRM and you can play it on all systems."

Wow, Steam has been really messed up today! Well, really ever since the put in the new "Workshop" stuff. Been randomly not working or going really slowly all day...
Metascore 48/100. Ouch.

Not that one should ever rely on the score alone, of course.
Not just that, but there isn't a single positive (green) critical review.
$30 - Support us even more and get a documentary of the making of the game on top of the full game when it releases
You also get the soundtrack too, which is why I gave at that level.

There also some additional levels above that encourage giving more money, which really HIB doesn't have. The Game Music Bundle seems to address it by having additional swag for the top giver, the top 10 givers and the top 20 givers. If you don't care about that, give $10 to get everything, or less to get the five albums they are giving away.

Don't worry; the Jedi Knight games go on sale every summer and winter sale for the same price.

Loved CoJ and CoJ:BiB dearly. The Cartel broke my heart. It COULD have been good but... just wasn't.

I really think the devs pulled staff from it to rush Dead Island out the door.

the difference is that the double fine adventure will be a good game. those indie bundles are usually throwaway junk that no one would buy if you couldn't get it for super cheap. i think i've got every single one i can for as cheap as possible to get all the games and i've played MAYBE 2 of them? i had no problem giving 15$ for an adventure game from the masters.

Thats like, uhh, your opinion man. Part of my point was the charity. The fact that people care less about giving to charity than getting something themselves.

You make a good point, Kaltic, but consider too what's being offered. Humble Bundles are, by and large, a showcase of the best indie games that are 1-2 years old. Double Fine is offering a brand new game.

Imagine what sort of support Humble Bundle would get if they offered a bundle that included the next new game each from the designers of: World of Goo, Osmos, Machinarium, Braid, Trine and Super Meat Boy. And oh by the way, the games probably won't get developed if we don't get a couple hundred thousand backers, and you won't receive any of them if you don't give at least $15.

Now that would be more of an apples-to-apples comparison.

Fun fact: whenever I get a Humble Bundle I put it all to the developers and give none to charity. Frankly, I don't consider the EFF much of a charity at all -- more like a political action committee. The others? It's not as if Humble Bundles are their sole source of funding. People are paying $15 for the Double Fine adventure game because they want the Double Fine adventure game. Just like plenty of people buy useless consumer goods that make them happy versus giving it to the Pediatric Aids Foundation or whoever. Maybe you're an exception and tithe 20% of your earnings to the poor... but this thread is about discussing Steam deals not the moral imperative. Enough of the off topic banter.

Because Double Fine has the fanatical fanboys. HIB games just don't.

Which is why the DF kickstarter is not going to change anything about gaming. Nobody has the cult of personality DF does.

The only waste of time BIGGER than The Cartel was watching that video. Eugh. Why are these nitwits on PA again?

Others have the cult of personality that Double Fine does, they're just already super rich and can already do whatever they want. Such as spending a million years making Half-life 2 Episode 3.

So I just got this message when Steam updated a few minutes ago. It's dated Feb 10th, but I can't see anything about this anywhere online. So I'm not sure if this is old news or not.

Anybody else get this yet? Or is this, in fact, old news?

It's pretty ridiculous how often people flame in this thread...

Picked up P.B., but feel like it should have been 75% off instead of 66%.

I have to agree with Skully here, after being preached to for three minutes about how terrible the war in Mexico is, I gave up and closed the "review"

Game of Thrones Genesis is deal of the day today at $9.99.

I own it and I say bleh, it's maybe worth $5 if that imo. First of all, ignore the GoT part. Just throw it out. It's not at all related to the TV series and really it doesn't exactly give the feel of the books either.

The visuals are really dated and not in an indie game intentionally retro to be cool way. It looks like something from the late 90s or early 00s.

It's basically a strategy game with heavy emphasis on diplomacy and backstabbing (spying, assasination etc) and less of an emphasis on direct combat. The mechanics are really simple too. Don't expect Total War or anything like that.

I can't recall if there is demo or not. I don't see one on Steam, but if there is one available elsewhere I'd strongly recommend checking it out first. It is, imo, a dated and very niche game that would not be getting any attention at all if it weren't for the GoT name.

On release it was also quite buggy and I and others had issues getting it to run sometimes. I haven't really gone back to it to see if they may have fixed things by this point, though I would hope so.
