CAGiversary!
Feedback

Welcome to the Steam Deal Thread V4! You can find the V1 thread (Nov 2010-July 2011) here, V2 thread (July 2011 - Feb 2012) here, and V3 thread (Feb-July 2012) here. Read post #2 of this thread for Steam FAQs and more.

This is a Wiki post. Please read this
We appreciate you helping keep this thread up to date. The sales change virtually every day so no one person has the time to update them all. If you notice a game is no longer on sale, feel free to delete its line from the sale list. Of course, if you see a game is on sale, add it to the list. Make sure your changes match the thread's format! For example, every game that's on sale is part of an unordered list. When adding a game to the list, copy an existing line and update the link, title, and prices. That way, the format stays correct. Do not list percentages off! We list the original price and the sale price here. If you have any suggestions for major changes to the post/thread, PM me (EastX) about them.
for instructions on updating the thread.

Preorder Deals - Updated 8/9
Group Buys - Updated 8/14

Several multiplayer Steam games are available in 2-packs or 4-packs. These packs offer a discount over buying multiple copies of a game separately. We also maintain group buy trade threads for several games, so please use those threads if you're interested in setting up a group buy.

Free Stuff - Updated 4/3

There are several free games and mods on Steam. These are a few choice ones; you can find a full list here. Note that free games are not permanently attached to your Steam account like actual purchases would be. You'll need to manually download a game again from the website if you uninstall it.

Steam around CAG

If you are interested in joining the Steam CAG Community or participating in a trade or group buy with fellow Cheap Ass Gamers, please do so in the dedicated threads and not in the deal discussion thread. In the dedicated threads you will find CAGers with the same specialized interest who will be much quicker (and happier) to respond than in the Deals thread.

Past Special Sales

Visit www.steamgamesales.com to check previous sale prices on Steam games. We do keep track of some older sales here though:

Steam Retail Key List

What is a CD key and where can I find it?

https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=7480-WUSF-3601

The CD Key is a serial number with a combination of 13, 18, or 25 letters and numbers - it can be found on a sticker inside your game's case or printed on the game's quick reference card.
The CD Key acts as your proof of purchase for the game - Steam Support may ask for it if you need to establish your ownership of an account. It is recommended that you keep your CD Key in a safe place to ensure the security of your account.

Indie Bundles thread on Steam forums (link)

222 games so far and I still haven't got a must-buys like The Secret of Magic Crystals and Coconut Queen. Shame on me.

Congratulation! :applause: I have a sealed copy of LR for 360 and just bought LR from GMG. Buying is one thing, playing is quite another, of course.

Grats!

Speaking of Steamgifts only about 1 hour left on mine:

Thanks to this summer sale, I now have Billy Ocean stuck in my head every time I enter the Steam thread. Only I'd swear he's saying "Coconut" instead of "Caribbean".
They have positions up for an economist, psychologist, and statistician (http://valvesoftware.com/jobs/job_postings.html). I remember getting a little excited seeing these posted. The sale purchasing behavior is one thing, but I think they are looking heavily into in-game economies. My bet is that they are thinking that the transactions that sustain these economies are where a big chunk of their profits will come from in the future.
That should be interesting. I would imagine the flash deals having a pretty positive effect on sales for a good number or reasons, though I'd be mighty interested to see whether that trend continued/changed into the sale when the deals keep repeating. But then that might be negated by the fact that people stayed in the steam store for much longer than previous sales to check on the flash deals and vote on community stuff, and that alone probably aided sales by a lot. (You stay in a store long enough, you're bound to buy something.)
As always, I enjoy looking at the collective CAG hauls. Thanks for sharing.
The few things I got to throw on the pile this time:
Heh. "few".
out of curiosity, how many games do you guys own on steam?
I have about 160, and my non-CAG friends think I'm crazy, but I feel that might be normal amount for CAG...
Hm. According to Steam I have 48 games, but then I also have that Sam and Max bundle, and every episode is a separate game, I think (whereas I would group them as one season=one game given the length of each ep). Then again, I have a bunch of uncounted games in my inventory too, so I guess those negate each other.

So, after that longwinded answer, about 48 games. But I only started really using Steam this year or so.
Would you mind explaining a bit more of it? Like what value is? I find it pretty awesome
I'm interested to know how the rating number gets calculated, since to me it looks like value = hours played x rating (and value/$ is value/ the money spent on the game). But I think... the bigger the value (and value/$), the "better" (or the better bargain) the game is, because it means the game is more valuable.
anarchyoblivion just broke 1600 games, and I just broke 1000. I believe us to be the CAGs with the most. =P
OMG how many of those 1000 games have you not played?
Coconut Queen?
A worthy game to be the 100th!

How many of you guys are constantly refreshing steam store? I know its over, but I guess I formed a habit over the sale. Also, I thought Dark Souls was going to be released for Windows Live. You guys think its worth it? I already have it for the ps3 (lost interest after old PS3 bricked, and couldn't recover save file), and I heard the developers are having difficulty of porting it to the pc.

Steam destroyed me in the early years. I am much cheaper now. Or at least I tell myself that. The data doesn't lie...
That's a lot of money, what could you possibly need $900 for on Steam? Chart is awesome, soon cag will make gantt chart to plan, schedule for the winter sale.

Also, not relevant to this thread, but a little statistics for my giveaways...
Trine 2/Group - 112 entries
Jade Empire/Group/$0.01 contribution - 81 entries
The Last Remnant/Private (posted in this thread)/$10.00 contribution - 7 entries
Metro 2033/Private (posted link in this thread)/$0.01 contribution - 4 entries
I think the last two giveaways were too hidden.

Its finally sinking in (personally) that CAG isn't a site for cheap ass gamers, but those that like to collect cheap games and than mantain, manage, and organized those collections, spending way more time and interest doing so instead of actually playing games.
God, I wish i only collected cheap games in my collection... a lot of vintage games get pricey

I did the unthinkable and started playing one of the games purchased suring the sale, I know, right.

Anyway, Assassin's Creed is gorgeous but the keyboard controls are all over the place. Is wired 360 controller the way to go?

I didn't mind the keyboard controls, but yeah, the 360 controller is way better to use for the AC games.

Try leveling up several times before you fight the boss. Being underleveled in Ys games can kill you as you'll take more damage and deal less.
oi, if any of you play lonesome road on new vegas, get the light step perk, that dlc is full of mines that cant be disarmed.
Great tip! Only way I got through that DLC.

If anyone is regretting not picking up the Fallout : New Vegas DLC, it's on sale for $2.49 a pop over at gamefly. The ulimate edition is a bit more than the Steam sale ($12.49), but there ya go.

420+ Games and counting...

Now I've procastinating playing my games - cause I have to add a WC to my GTX 480 - playing all these games with a 9800GT doesn't seem as nice :D

Now I'm getting steam to load up every page's game detail page so it doesn't have to load from the servers - AND each thumbnail in the Grid display - procrastination +1

I know some of you buy multiple copies during the sales, Does anyone happen to have a copy of krater, dungeon defenders, doc clock or cargo they don't want? Have trauma to trade or steam/paypal
I had to give my credit card company's fraud department a call this morning because of all the charges during the Steam sale.
I've had that happen before, really annoying. Although I guess in the case of lots of little transactions it makes sense. I had to call them before for a damn $15 payment to Blizzard. Pissed me off.

I think I'll be around 1000-1050 when I finish unpacking all the games and DLC I picked up from this sale, but it's hard to tell. I'm never quite sure which DLC does and doesn't affect the count.

I used to keep a spreadsheet of it all including price paid per game, but with the flurry of indie bundles that started coming out, plus all the Steamworks titles and games I've received via trade, it was too hard to keep track of which I'd activated and where each game came from.

Speaking of indie bundles, less than 6 hours to win a full Indie Gala 5 bundle! Link in my sig! The only requirements are that you're a member of the CAG group, and have contributed at least 1 cent on steamgifts.

I really just got some Dungeon Defenders DLC, I bought the games I was interested in last year. I am really just waiting for Torchlight 2 to come out now. I was kinda disappointed with the Summer Sale.

I'll take this opportunity, as I do every opportunity, to hawk the freeware db application Data Crow. It's very good for maintaining catalogs of software, music, movies, or most anything else and, of course, it's free.
I just finished Episode 1 of The Walking Dead game this evening. Took me about 2.5 hours. It's been great so far, and I'm interested in replaying it after finishing the whole game to see how my choices actually affect the storyline.
I'm still playing it and I'm really impressed with what Telltale has done. It's a hard game to describe, it's not exactly an adventure game, it's similar to Jurassic Park in a way but with far less QTE events and more interactivity with the environment. However, unlike JP, the characters are really engaging, voice acting is superb, and the story is not afraid to go to some really dark places.

Working with databases all day makes the prospect of managing yet another one kind of meh as well, but thanks for the suggestion.

Morning all!

So I managed to install and try out SR3 last night, after being gifted the complete pack by a friend. Man, that game looks rediculously silly. Very much looking forward to the day I have the time to sit down and enjoy it. Sadly, Deus Ex is taking me FOREVER to get through, and I just picked up Amalur @ BestBuy for $10, so I'm looking forward to seeing what that's about. (Don't even remind me about ME3, which has been waiting for me to play it for a month now.)

Steam Sale Final Haul:
Binding of Isaac + DLC
Lara Croft & The Guardian of Light + DLC
Half Life: Source
Grimrock (Darkspore Trade)
Frozen Synapse: RED DLC
Every Prince of Persia
Dear Esther
Dungeon Defenders Eternia DLC + New Characters
Just Cause 2 DLC
Thief + Thief 2 (Already had Deadly Shadows)
The Longest Journey
Dawn of War II Retribution DLC
Company of Heroes (Greenman Gaming Credit)
Syberia 1 & 2
Trine 2 CE
SR3 Complete (Gift)

Total Damage: $62.05 or ~$3.50 a game. About a dollar higher than my running average of $2.32 per game for my collection.

I've also been playing Fallout 3, which is frustrating me a bit.
I'm far too weak to get to the Radio station through the Metro station, I need a better gun. I broke into Jericho's home but couldn't find a better gun there, already have the 10mm. I guess I have to get it from Lucas Simms when he's shot by Mr. Burke, but I didn't want to let Lucas die right now.

Also have been playing RF Armageddon, which is a fun 3rd person shooter for the 5 bucks I payed for it.

To be honest, even though I got a lot of games on Steam, I'm still trying to play through my GOG version of Riddick Escape from Butcher Bay, which is a surprisingly pretty good game.

I don't know how you guys can have that many games. I'm an 8 year member of Steam and have about 40 games. Add a 360 backlog of maybe 8 games and I feel like I'm never going to play it all.
I'll take this opportunity, as I do every opportunity, to hawk the freeware db application Data Crow. It's very good for maintaining catalogs of software, music, movies, or most anything else and, of course, it's free.
Cool, I've never seen that software before. I hate using Excel, so maybe I will have a better time using this. Weekend project!

Also, going from the Steam summer sale to looking at prices of console games (I want Red Dead Redemption, Y U NO ON PC?) ... yeesh, talk about whiplash. RDR GOTY is like $30 on Amazon right now. Sigh. That can get like 12 games on Steam! I ordered a used copy at $19 though, so hopefully the game isn't in too crappy of a condition for my liking.
I know that actually playing your games is frowned upon here but, in all seriousness, have you guys been enjoying or regretting your purchases?
I've been too busy trying to keep up with the thread and managing Steamgifts drawings to play the games. Aside from downloading SRTT, my last interaction with something in my library was playing Coconut Queens Friday night.

The succulent fruits. They call to me.
Attempted to play Galactic Civilizations II last night for about half an hour...what did I get myself into? I have no idea what's going on and there are a million buttons and options. I may be too spoiled by the CoD generation of games these days but that looks like a lot of fun if I actually knew what they wanted me to do. I never got into space strategy/sim games and I think I remember why. Maybe I just skipped over the tutorial or something.
I am like that with those space sims too. I try to play them and am like HuhWhat? end up feeling stupid and quit. The sad thing is I keep buying them too.

I think Civ V gave me a false sense of security because that game really is so easy to get into even for a total noob. I know that disgusts some people but I like it. We all have start somewhere and a game is supposed to be fun, not require reading some huge ass manual and having to figure a ton of crap out right out the gate. Civ V is really good at showing, not telling by throwing you right into the action and then giving you the advisers if you need them. I think every other simulation game could use more of that personally.

With my backlog I just don't see the point of spending a bunch of time trying to figure something out and being frustrated. There are plenty of other games. Which brings me to my next point...
Not technically a regret, but I'm having a hard time getting myself to go back to Ys: Oath in Felghana. I'm basically stuck on the second boss. I know what I need to do, I just don't have the digit dexterity to do it.

What plft said. I level or even overlevel if I am having troubles with a boss. It helps loads in Ys and it is what I have been doing although I have this sinking feeling it is going to come back to bite me in the ass at the end of the game when I hit max level and can't do that anymore.

I'm thinking of restarting on easy. I have no shame in doing that either. For me games are generally more about the experience than the challenge. I used to be better at these games when I was younger but I don't have the patience for it now. Back then I had one game at a time so it was figure it out or nothing. Now I have 800+ other games waiting in the wings so it's not worth it to me to get too hung up on one game. If it's a difference between play on easy and beat the game or play on regular get frustrated and quit and probably never come back to it, I'll take the former.
anarchyoblivion just broke 1600 games, and I just broke 1000. I believe us to be the CAGs with the most. =P
I have 800 and something so quickly catching up to you Atreyuevr, but I would actually prefer you guys to stay ahead of me in the number of games you have because it makes me feel less insane.
I don't know how you guys can have that many games. I'm an 8 year member of Steam and have about 40 games. Add a 360 backlog of maybe 8 games and I feel like I'm never going to play it all.
It's.... a sickness. As much as some joke about the game-collecting meta-game, I think in some respects it's very true. I know it's hard for me to pass up a deal (still pondering Jade Empire, even though I don't really want it) just because there's something appealing about the perception of saving money on an item. Even if I don't want it NOW, maybe I might want it LATER and if I buy it NOW at cheap, then I'll have it to play LATER if I want. I can usually hold off on games when I suspect they'll drop in price unless 1) I want to support the developer or 2) I really want to play it now.

But yeah, I have way too many games. I envy your rather small backlog. I wish I could get rid of some of my games/trade them in for Steam credit. There was a rumor a year or two back Steam was considering a trade in system or something, but sadly it never materialized.
